Enjoy the possibilities of romance and desire

Now this lovely little nook of drinking and eating intimacy is a bit of a gem for the patrons North of the bridge. Small Bar provides a truly relaxing and placid spot for social drinks and romance. It definitely has that air of 'first few dates' appeal about it. You can drink and also eat from a simple menu but interesting menu of small foods and food to share. There are three entertaining areas, on the sidewalk (covered), the dimmed lighted interior or my own personal favourite the rear exterior. This last area has its own bar, candle lit tables and again, really friendly and professional service. The ambience allows the drinker, lover or thinker to simply blend into the atmosphere of smooth easy going fun. I don't talk about prices because quality is what you pay for. No need to quibble with prices because you truly do get a worthwhile experience. The only thing that I could say I would like to see happen at Small Bar is a change in their choice of tables and seats. Not the most comfortable of seats and wobbly tables but that is not any reason to avoid this lovely bar. You can't go wrong if you desire a chilled atmosphere where you take in the ambience as much as the booze and food. Totally recommend!

It is exactly what it is, a small bar. Quite narrow with a long bar to your left and to the right are tables. Have to say overall the food was not that great. The chips were normal crispy chips, nothing special, and came out with tomato sauce and garlic sauce. Corn chips were good in that they give you a lot of guacamole. Usually places don't do this but here they don't hold back and you are sure to have no shortage of guac. Sliders weren't great, very bland and very basic. Unexciting. Chicken skewers were tender and had nice big pieces. I can conclude that when it comes to quantity Small Bar are pretty good, but quality was a little lacking.

One of the things I like about going and checking out places is that I end up going to areas that I would not normally visit if I was a simply tourist, and one of those places on my recent trip to Sydney happened to be Crows Nest. Okay, I've always wanted to check it out, and I'm glad I did this time because I came across this little gem of a bar. While it isn't exactly hidden away, I wouldn't have discovered it if I hadn't have gone to Crows Nest. It is an absolutely gorgeous little bar with a lovely garden out the back, and with the recent changes in the smoking laws, you can sit out here smoke free. The staff are really nice as well, though the best part about this place is the atmosphere.

Cute small bar in the city. Went there on a cold night and warmed up pretty quick with a delicious mulled wine. The bar has 3 levels and a small outside area for the smokers (basement level). After that my friend and I shared the Bocconcini Arancini and I had the pulled pork burger with the waffle fries. The food is really good and the wines are great too. On the ground floor they even had a live band performing on a school night which was good entertainment. If you prefer it more quiet just go to one of the other two levels. I personally liked the cozy basement area with candles all over the place

The name of this place pretty much sums it all up. Small Bar. It's not the smallest place in the world and does go over three levels but the name is quite accurate, don't worry about that! It's a midweek night that's cold and rainy and my companion and I decide to avoid peak hour traffic so we try out Small Bar. A lot of other people have thought the same thing and this place is jammed. Even though yes, it is a small bar. In saying that we manage to find a seat quite easily (luckily maybe?), there is a pretty good wine list and a handy food menu to match. It feels nice and cosy in here! If you don't manage to find a spot on the street level area, you can try upstairs which might be your best bet or if you're lucky you might be able to snare a lounge down stairs. It's a pretty busy position too although that may have something to do with the amount of foot traffic heading to the bathroom!

Thankfully this all went down at Foxtrot Inn, that wonderful small bar in Crows Nest that I always forget about because it is nowhere near anything (except Lynn's Fortuna Court - the original old-school Chinese restaurant). No one else knows it's here either. On a Friday evening it's pretty quiet. Foxtrot has everything you could ask for in a small bar. The maze-like layout means there is something to discover around every corner. The drinks and cocktail selection is extensive and the food menu is pretty good. Did I mention the condiments? Oh the condiments! Tabasco, Cholula and that white rhino of condiments Frank's Red Hot. Delightful.

Waves of black memory break unbidden upon the shingle of my thoughts. Dark, smoky rooms. Leering grins. Sticky floors. Pancake make up and teeth stained with lipstick. But no more! The gentrification of the Crowie strip continues with the latest incarnation of the Stoned Crow rising - phoenix-like! - from the ashes of the previous. And this one done be a keeper yo. Giant, open sun-splashed wooden bench looking out onto the pedestrian strip. Comfy couches cloistered away in cosy yet surprisingly open alcoves. Wood, chalk boards, exposed brick. Shockingly attractive wait staff pulled straight from an American Apparel catalogue and friendler than Labradors. I hit this place on a late Friday for happy hour - $10 frozen cocktails - and it was pumping man, full of hot-to-trots and way-cools. In summary: The Stoned Crow is like a disgusting, pitiful homeless man covered in his own excrement that conquered his amnesia and destitution, had a long hot shower, threw on some classy duds and landed a lucrative modelling job. If it were a Hollywood movie it'd be called "Harry The Hobo Comes Good."

While the food and drink available were great, it was noisy (you know those places where you come out and your ears are ringing?)- an since there was no dancing and most people where eating main sized meals, it seemed unnecessary and a big turn off to return or stay for more drinks. I will point out, that a few years ago a group of us went to The Stoned Crow and some of us (those who ate the same dish) cam down with food poisoning and because of this I've avoided the place since. Since then it's had two new owners and a serious renovation.

Liked the fitout, dark and moody and tasteful, staff solicitous and generally excellent. Pre dinner martini was excellent, wine list seems wide and eclectic, menu looks very interesting if a little pricey. Waiter suggests 5-6 dishes - 3 from the small plate menu (entrees) at $12-$18, 2 from the larger dishes (mains) at $24-$30, and maybe 1-2 deserts. Ouch. So, we did. Four from the small list, one from the large and a desert. Smalls, sashimi, artichokes and asparagus w smoked feta, parsnips and duck ham, and prawns with corn and corn butter. Main, choice of fish, chicken or beef, waiter suggested chicken 'the best i have ever had' so we went that, although the flathead in filo did sound nice. Desert, raspberries w stuff But. A few buts, regrettably. The sashimi was a little dry, although with the compressed cucumber it was served with it was v nice. Prawns, cooked sous vide, actually a bit rare for us, but the corn and corn butter was lovely. Artichokes, by far the tastiest dish of the evening, the smoked feta a delight, and all in all flavoursome. Parsnips and duck ham - well, we had a problem here. Evidently the chef had substituted carrots for parsnips, since it seems the duck ham was the hero. Sorry, we wanted parsnips and the waiter didn't mention the substitution. To be fair, when we pointed this out they deducted it from the price, so can't complain on that front. But rather have been told and known, so no surprises. Chicken, breast cooked in stock from the carcass, indubitably soft and tender, but frankly a little tasteless. Desert, raspberries with honeycomb crumble (I think) and ice cream. So, observations. Food presentation was outstanding, as was the service. But, to our palates, it was all fairly subtle flavours. Bland even. Hate that word. The hero of the dish should be first in the description. Twice we were told the hero was (duck ham and honeycomb) yet they were listed s secondary ingredients. Guys, sort out your menu descriptions. Also, the venue is quite noisy. Think they might need to engage a sound guy and put some baffles around. To be fair, first week, should improve, waiter was grateful for our feedback rather than resentful which is often the case. We'll be back tor another look in a month or two.

(Expect to spend $200 for 2 people to do the place justice.) Unfortunately, I didn't take a photo of the menu, and the menu on the website is slightly different, so I can't name all of the dishes, but will try. First up were the oysters with pickled black fungus. I've eaten plenty of oysters, but have never previously had them served this way, and it was a delicious flavour combination, the kind that makes you love oysters all over again. The other stand out for us was the duck ham from the dish with the heirloom carrots - so, so tasty! We also had a standout vegetarian dish (I think it involved cheese?) plus the prawns with corn, which was a quirky but good combination. For mains, we had the fish dish and the pork, sharing both. I think it would have been easier to have one each, as they were difficult to share. My pick out of the two was the fish, with a superb combination of flavours. However, the next table along had the beef skirt, and it also looked excellent. The highlight, however, was probably the dessert. I selected the passionfruit tofu, while my husband had the cherries with dark chocolate. They were very different flavour-wise, but we each loved our choice. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from passionfruit tofu, but it was just like creme caramel in consistency, but with a strong passionfruit flavour. Loved the toasted rice, coconut and basil - such an excellent combination of flavours! After the Belle D'Annata cocktail, I had a glass of rose and the French dessert wine. Loved the tasting notes supplied for both (skip forward to the section on wine by the bottle for most of the notes), and both were excellent choices. Would love to go back and try more of the wines - they have a very eclectic selection, just what I love. Good luck to all the crew and thanks for a wonderful dinner!
