First, I do not want to minimize anyone's reviews regarding behavioral issues at the school, such…read moreas bullying and sexual assault. I had hoped to be a little more insulated in a Waldorf environment, but our school has not escaped such issues. The administration is growing into less tolerance, more support, and quicker action, and there is still work to be done, of which I believe the administration is acutely aware. However, I caution you regarding complaints about the pedagogy and academic pace. Waldorf IS NOT the same as other schools. The pace is very different. Reading is taught, but not as early as regular public schools - instead the focus of early education is on social development, and tactile and experiential learning. If you put a child into Waldorf and pull them out before 7th or 8th grade, they will be behind academically in comparison to their peers in public schools. Not because they don't learn, they just don't learn at the same pace and order. Our students assimilate into public high schools with no problem. Waldorf is not for everyone, and that's ok! This school, like many others, is navigating staffing, funding, and support issues while trying to create a contained space for its students. They aren't always successful, and there have been some significant missteps to be sure, but there are so many amazing staff members who work tirelessly to serve their students. My recommendation is read about Waldorf Education, then read the reviews, and then - if you think Waldorf is right for your kiddo - go on a tour, meet some faculty, and decide for yourself. Overall, I think this school has been a wonderful experience for our family - not perfect by any means - my child has attended this school for 9 years, since kindergarten.

We chose the Waldorf school to our own surprise, as two STEM professionals who attended schools in SJUSD. It's true that Waldorf education approaches learning with a different cadence, not seriously pushing academics until closer to second grade. However the academics are offered first thing in first grade, children pick them up at their own developmental pace, and interventions are offered where needed. GVOS Waldorf curriculum offers fine arts, handwork, a very low-technology learning environment, a small environment (~1 class per grade), the unique opportunity to stay with their own teacher for multiple years (called looping) and a emphasis on social-emotional collaborative learning. Children are taught cursive handwriting and record all their learning throughout the year writing, illustrating, and annotating their own main lesson books. GVOS has a high degree of parent participation. Virtues are taught daily, and whole child education and discipline are encouraged. High school and college students who graduated Golden Valley and have returned for panel interviews have reported confusion regarding the social and emotional culture of public schools they attend after Golden Valley Orchard school -- in my opinion this is more of a reflection on GVOS's success than a particular failure of other schools. We have seen changes and challenges, but nothing unique to or necessarily caused by the school or the Waldorf curriculum. There is a variety of charter schools in Orangevale, as well as several public offerings and one "high achievement" public offering which is enrolled on a testing basis. Looking at test scores from the 2024-2025 CAASPP & ELPAC, the trend for underperforming classes is a mirror of grades that were most profoundly affected by COVID pandemic classroom interruptions. https://www.caaspp-elpac.org/ GVOS's scores fall right between the local public school (Ottoman) and the local fundamental school (Green Oaks.) GVOS is a public school and held to the same standards of these two schools.

Caring, hard working, dedicated staff. Phenomenal principal who also teaches Junior High, select girls chorus, sports, and much more. Small class sizes, music program for ALL grade levels (band, choir, handbells, select choir, ukulele, etc), Chess club, hot lunch program, sports program, and much more! If you're looking for a Christian school that places values, integrity and character above sports, this might be a good fit. Academically, students score 3-4 grades HIGHER after attending OVS. Students are not allowed to have cell phones on campus (yeah!!). A conservative dress code allows students to focus on academics, instead of fashion. Win-win! Kingdom Kids Preschool is on the same campus, and has an amazing director and family atmosphere as well. In an age where pressures and danger surround our children, it's incredibly reassuring to find a safe, Christian school, that promotes kindness, integrity, honesty and respect.

Old, OSHA violations in the cafeteria & stage, bland, food that is very easily the worst out of any school I've ever seen, unappealing visuals, confusing layout, unregulated racism and bigotry among students, and a lack of school spirit. The school staff are alright, not bad. Generally helpful. Some have passion. Don't take the painting class, the teacher is notoriously rude and unhelpful.
