Contrary to the name of the practice, it does not feel like your typical small town dental office. I come from a family of dentists and have been to multiple small town practices that prioritize patient first care over profit; however, this is not Smalltown's philosophy (at least their actions). I wish I would have read the other low reviews on Google and Yelp prior to my appointment. I agree with others, Smalltown Dental's prices are high. Don't assume insurance will cover it. Ask for pricing and cross-check with your insurance coverage PRIOR to care. I was billed for a service I don't believe was necessary that was not covered by insurance rather than a new patient visit. I have NEVER been to a new dentist for the first time and had to pay for a new patient comprehensive exam out of pocket even if there were areas for concern. When I addressed the office about this, I was met with resistance and no real effort to make it right. They appear to be fine losing business because they are up-charging everyone else. Not the quality of care or interactions that I have been used to with true small town family practices. It is clear they are over charging so that they can make money from patients on top of payments from insurance. When called on it, they say that it is due to the fact that insurance is paying less and less and that they (the dental office) needs to pay their bills too...and yes, this was actually stated to me by the office manager. Maybe they can try lowering their bills by getting rid of the goodie bags. Patients don't need coffee mugs with the dental office logos on them...instead they deserve affordable care. I do believe they have control of their pricing instead of just blaming it on insurance companies. Everyone was nice; however, the dentist was disengaged. I was shocked that at a new dentist visit, the dentist didn't even take the time to try to get to know me or discuss anything regarding my care. The dentist's analysis did not align with the feedback that I got from the hygienist. If you are tempted to try this practice out due to the name, be wary of their billing and insurance policies. This practice focuses on profit over patient which is not what I am looking for. I will be seeking out a true small town practice that is not just trying to make a dime. read more

Nice office, very nice staff. A little pricey but not crazy. I and my kids have gone to the Houskas for close to 20 years. Had an issue once with work they did and it was addressed/fixed free, promptly and with a smile. read more

Couldn't day nicer things about both doctors. I'm particular and visit the dentist 4 times a year, so I don't have problems, but they help keep it that way. The chairs are comfortable, they have aromatherapy which I love, beck pillows, and blankets and more. They are out of network for both Metlife and Delta Dental do you will pay a bit more but the service is worth it. When my bonded retainer on my lower teeth somehow got loose, the doctor got me right in. I grind my teeth and a nightguard was made for me....I chewed right threw the first one, but they made me stronger one at no charge to me. I appreciate their timely service and friendly front desk. After going to my fiancé's dental appointment with him somewhere else in Bloomington and being grossed out and underwhelmed (which shall remain nameless), I called the office and Tina found an appointment for him the next day. Unfortunately we are moving to Louisiana in a month, so I've had my last visit with this wonderful practice, but I highly recommend. I'll review again after my fiancé has his appointment. read more

The dentist here is alright but I've used a many other that are gentler and more involved in the process. The front desk is really really bad. They are not very honest about their insurance policies. Recently we got lots of dental work from them and they repeatedly told us that they took our insurance. We kept getting really high out of pocket expenses. We had multiple conversations with front desk where we questioned why our out of pocket costs were so high. They always maintained a position that our insurance was screwed up and was paying them at a (lower) rate that the insurance deemed appropriate. Later, my insurance company told us that they were out of network. Our insurance company said that the front desk knew that we were being billed as out of network too. We were disappointed that the front desk misguided us. On being confronted, the front desk said, "You never asked us if we were in network or out of network. If you had, we would have told you that.". We realize that it was our mistake as well to not have doubled check with our insurance but we expected better from a family dentist. Given the huge number of alternative dental practices in Bloomington, you will be better served looking for a more honest business. read more

Our Family of six have been going to Houska Dental Center for more than 25 years. They worked with us to get all four kids scheduled over their holiday break from college. The are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Their front staff are professional and very informative. I know the cost prior to any procedure. They sent a text to remind me when I have an appointment and a reminder to take my medicine one hour before my appointment (because of a knee replacement). Dr Michael has recently started working at Houska Dental Center and is an outstanding and caring dentist. From the time I enter the practice until I leave, this office is caring, polite, professional. I think that as many times as we have been their in the 25 plus years if there was a problem we would have noticed. read more

Very shady with their billing procedures. Found we were overcharged many times...and they just pretended like it was an accident...over and over. If I didn't keep track of our insurance EOBs and their bills, they would have just kept the money! read more

I have been a patient of the Houska Dental Center for more than 20 years. It always amazes me that the same seems to be true of everyone that I chat with while in the waiting room! It is easy to understand, though, when you consider the quality of the practice. The dental work is excellent and virtually painless, the staff is always courteous, efficient and friendly, and the offices are spotlessly clean and beautiful. It is a pleasure to get treatment in a warm, welcoming, and professional atmosphere. I recently had some medical issues that had me visiting numerous medical practices in town. My husband and I both remarked at each and every office that they should take lessons in patient relations from the Houska Dental Center! I made a mental note to myself to post on Yelp and share these thoughts. If you need dentistry in Central Illinois, then this is the only place to go. read more
