According to people who work in the senior housing facility where my mother lived, this is not an uncommon occurrence. It seems that Mr. Whitfield does ineed use his position as mayor to position his business in a way that is clearly a conflict of interest. That aside, I would like to share my experience with the business as a customer. I dealt with Mr. Whitfield directly, and I can't say it was a positive experience in any way. I understand that we all deal with death differently, but I didn't feel any empathy from this man at all. It was all business with him. At one point, he even referred to "your father" even though it was my mother's body. That lack of attention to detail bothered me. Dealing with them was this agonizing game of phone tag where I ultimately had to get a lawyer involved in order to get my mother's ashes back from them in anything approaching a timely fashion. It took almost three weeks! Almost made the memorial service late. And when I went to pick up her ashes, they had made a mistake on the paperwork that I needed to sign for pickup. Also, a complete lack of sympathy or empathy from them at the time. I cannot recommend against them strongly enough. Learn from my experience, and go somewhere else. Anywhere.

We received a list from the hospice nurse and, honestly, started with Florida Direct Cremation because of their location in St Pete. I have to say, it feels like it was divine intervention. From the very beginning Theo was compassionate and caring. He took the time to walk me through the process and helped answer all of my questions. I knew right away they were the right choice for our family's needs. Florida Direct Cremation is a small, family-owned business and you can tell by the attention and care they provide. Theo notified us when our father was in their care, he assisted with providing our father with honors given to a military veteran, and he stayed in contact with any updates in the process. I felt confident in entrusting them with our father. In terms of value, honestly, we did not do a lot of looking around since Florida Direct offered what we needed and nothing more. We did not need a big funeral home. We needed a service provided by someone who we could trust. I appreciate how Florida Direct Cremation does some of the leg work in notifying social security as well as mailing the death certificates to me (out of state). That and the wonderful customer service made Florida Direct Cremation a great value and great fit for us. Thank you, Theo. Death is a highly emotional and painful experience for anyone to go through and if people have their living wills and a trust, it might be a little easier than posting obnoxious reviews. And David is right, you can't use money from a deceased persons account. It has nothing to do with how many children you might have or even different names. It's the law. As far as the value, it didn't matter to me as I had to do what I had to do both times unfortunately. I think Florida family creations is very reasonable based on everything that you receive as well as good customer relations.

All of the documents were clearly explained. The pre-payment is held in a trust until the service is needed. This is definitely the way to go if you don't want a big expensive funeral that your loved ones would have to pay for. The price is about one third of what the big funeral home chains are asking.

More concerning was that I was not presented with options during planning; I was guided toward specific choices, and only when I asked questions were alternatives mentioned. When I brought in my mom's clothes and belongings, other staff greeted me kindly. Bri did not. I had to introduce myself. She showed no warmth, said nothing about taking good care of my mother, and focused only on reprinting a contract--twice--because it wasn't correct. When I left, there were no reassuring words about the service or my mom being in good hands. Two business days passed after I forgot my credit card when updating paperwork, and no one called. Then, after 5:00 p.m. on Friday, I received a message asking me to call back quickly to make payment before they left. There were no words about the upcoming service--only about money. The church service was beautiful. However, when we arrived at the cemetery (after lingering slightly at church), my mother had not yet arrived. We waited a long time before the hearse finally came. We were given no explanation. At the gravesite, some male family members helped with the casket, and Bri spoke to them in an abrupt, directive manner, as if she did not realize this was their grandmother. She then asked me--at the gravesite--if we planned to stay for the lowering of the casket. That question should have been addressed during planning, not at that moment. When it was time to lower my mom, Bri began picking flowers off the spray we had purchased and handed them to us to toss in afterward. It was upsetting to watch her dismantle the arrangement in front of us. That could have been done beforehand. After the burial, she approached me--not to offer condolences--but to ask if I could come in Monday to settle the account. Over the weekend, we looked through sympathy cards and realized no one could find the guest book. On Monday I emailed Bri asking if the funeral home had it--no response. Tuesday morning I emailed Archie, who responded immediately. Shortly after, Bri called to say she had the guest book and I could pick it up when I came in to settle the account. We had been searching for it all weekend. She had taken it and never informed us. When I expressed my frustration, she did not apologize. Instead, she said she felt she had not been treated well at the service. I reminded her that we were the grieving family and that her role was to support us. She refused to deliver the guest book to my father and said I would need to pick it up when I came for the death certificates (which are still not ready). When I later asked about flower order cards from their website so we could properly thank people, she said she had those as well and that I could pick them up at the same time. It feels completely inappropriate that we must retrieve these meaningful items ourselves, especially after they were withheld without communication. Archie was kind, gentle, and compassionate--but one good employee cannot make up for Bri's rudeness, lack of empathy, and unprofessional conduct. She is in the wrong profession, and I sincerely hope management provides her with proper training so no other family experiences what we did. I also do not understand why there is an additional $10 charge per death certificate on top of already substantial funeral costs.

I will say the parking situation was easy to navigate but I don't believe I saw a larger lot in the back. Not sure but assume so. When my mother came to pick up her deceased husband's remains she was charged a second time for the full amount that had already been paid online. There was no apology for the double charge and they said they would get it fixed. After several days of not hearing from the funeral home it took the recently widowed woman, contesting the charge through the credit card company to hopefully get it resolved. This is unacceptable especially when finances are already in limbo after a death. I would keep clear of doing any financial transactions with this funeral home via their website.

I have helped a woman in her 50's who lost her home and I helped get her into a local assisted living facility and she had money coming in for her social security disability but she suddenly died and has no family or friends in the area. She has one relative who lives out of state and doesn't have access to her bank account YET but because they are not getting the $$ right away they are dumping her with another group outside this area. I called several times throughout the week asking permission to see her to say "good bye" and they stated (LIED) the family would not give permission. I finally got the number for the family member and she said this facility NEVER called her to give permission for me to view her. This family member called this afternoon giving me permission to view and they denied me at the door stating "you need an appointment and she is leaving tomorrow." I offered $100 for just 5 minutes to see her before she left the area but the staff member looked at me with cold empty eyes and said "no." I understand rules but when minutes count and can make the difference for someone asking for closure and to say good bye you CAN make exceptions. Not them, they were done with her, the family member and me, Heartless! If this is how you treat someone without family and $$ you showed your true colors. This was just another injustice to this poor sole who did nothing but be kind to everyone around her. I am a retired military veteran and have a doctorate degree.
