Smart Resources is more than a recruiter. They listen to the client and the potential talent and work hard to find a great fit. They don't just throw your resume at anything that you are simply "qualified" for. The entire team works together for you as well as the client and they are genuinely good people. I recently got placed at a great job that exceeded my requests and I'm so thankful to have worked with the Smart Resources team!! They even sent flowers to me for my first day. UPDATE: received acknowledgement that the company understands it's miscommunication to me, but no action has been suggested to correct the situation. I do not feel that the company advocated enough for me during my placement. I had to prompt most of the communications and the process took months. I also think they could have been better educated about the pros/cons of placing me in another state. There has been lack of follow through on their end since placing me as well and when I communicated to them that the placement was not ideal, and that a, b + c were not actually what they were made out to be, they gave some lame response about the tax man and ghosted me after learning that I was unhappy. read more

Here is the list of temp agencies I interviewed with: Opportunities Group Avanti Staffing Temp Time New Office Temps Interviewing Consultants The Chicago Hire Company Smart Resources Smart was the last one I met with, and the first one to give me a job. Also, they've been getting me the jobs which pay the highest. I've been consistently checking in with all, and Smart is the only one who keeps stepping up to my weird schedule and weird demands. They also have this awesome thing called "FAST," you come in on a prescheduled day at 8am, and if someone calls in with a last minute job you're out the door with a job. If no one calls, you're guaranteed four hours of office work for $10 an hour. Fact is, though, someone usually calls, and you're at the top of the list because you're there. Libby is super awesome - a great listener, and she's really trying hard to get me a better position that she says will pay more and make better use of my skills. She always returns phone calls promptly, regardless of how unimportant my issue is. Compared to the others on my list: Except for Avanti, which focuses more on permanent staffing and who's been great so far, they all pale in comparison to Smart. They were all super friendly and responsive and encouraging when I first met them, and have, at best, been spotty and inconsistent with responding to my needs after that first day. Most don't even return phone calls at all. Whatever assignments I got with them paid less then the minimum I told them I would work for. Obviously it's probably best to register at a bunch of places, but if you're going to go with one, go with Smart. read more

I received a response email from one of their recruiters, stating that they only help those who have Executive Assistant level jobs for at least 2 years, and it apparently took them 2 days to tell me that. If you fit that job description, by all means, give them a try... perhaps you will have better luck than I... otherwise, move on. read more

My patience with the staffing industry in Chicago is wearing thin, so I have no issue voicing my complaints and sharing my experiences. I am generally not one to write many negative reviews, but this industry keeps letting me down. While Smart Resources is not downright terrible or lacks professionalism, it is extremely lackluster and takes a halfhearted approach to staffing positions and placing candidates. For starters, you don't get the opportunity to really build rapport with many of the recruiters. You interview with just one and you don't even check in with that person; instead, you call the front office to check-in on a weekly basis. That is not a terrible process, but it isn't helpful to the candidate either;you can easily get lost in their database and go weeks without hearing from anyone. The one plus to this check-in process is that I was alerted by front desk on a few occasions that my info in the database was wrong, which promptly led to it being corrected (I will commend how professional and helpful their reception is). Second, I find follow up quite weak. On two separate occasions I was told of possible openings, only to never hear about it again from the recruiter. I understand clients cancel positions or hire elsewhere all the time, but some following up and transparency with the candidate would be helpful. Overall, I find SR lacking in straightforward communication and good opportunities. Unless you need some work in between jobs, there are better options out there for job seekers. read more

Smart Resources is a FANTASTIC staffing agency. I had just relocated to Chicago from New York and needed to find a good admin position in the area. I worked with Maren who was always available with any questions or concerns that I had. The first couple of positions that were sent my way weren't exactly what I was looking for, and Maren was completely flexible in order for me to find what I needed. I was placed with a great company within a few weeks. Even during my employment, Maren was easily reachable regarding any questions I had, including my inquiries about if I would be hired directly by the company. They actually care about getting you hired...not all temp agencies are like that. Most of them prefer to keep you on their payroll as long as they can, but I never felt this way with Smart Resources. They even sent me a gift card upon my job offer! Today, I even received an e-card on my birthday...which is what finally pushed me to write this review. Well done Smart Resources! read more

A few days after posting my negative review of Smart Resources the owner emailed me to offer his apologies about my experience. He also offered to look at my resume directly. I figured everyone deserves a second chance so I wrote him back and attached my resume. I spoke with Tim (owner of Smart Resources) today about my resume and experience and have to say that he was quite helpful in discussing options that I have, even going as far as giving me the names of several agencies that would work best with my background and qualifications. He explained to me that his firm specializes in admin placement and that with my background and the current economic climate that my resume will get overlooked more often since I have not been an admin before. Companies will take the resume with the admin background over mine first because they want the experience when filling a position. Makes total sense to me; when I would hire people in my past career I would scan for experience on a resume first. Tim is also having one of his recruiters call me to discuss further what Smart Resources can do for me. I appreciate that the owner of a business can take time out of their busy schedule to acknowledge errors or oversights made on behalf of their company as well as be completely candid when discussing my options. I'm glad I gave Smart Resources a second chance since they turned out to be quite helpful in my job hunt. read more

I temped at Smart for almost a year, and the experience definitely allowed me to continue to pay my bills while seeking a full time job and interning for gratis. The assignments varied from administrative work within small to medium sized companies to staffing registration at conferences. In between assignments the company allows you to be "on call" about once a week, which you get paid to do. Quite nice for those who really need a check. They do offer insurance as well, but the receptionist at the time advised against getting it since it doesn't really cover a lot. Overall, I would recommend Smart to anyone who needs to be able to fill a gap with funds while continuing to be aggressive with their job search. As with most temp agencies, it really is up to you to make sure that you're made a top priority with the firm, and assignments are usually offered and require immediate sign-up, because otherwise Smart will call another candidate. Smart Resources is fantastic! I sought them out this March, was placed in an ongoing temp assignment within a few weeks, and am just now wrapping up. Everyone I worked with at their office was extremely professional, helpful, and courteous (three cheers for Marin, Libby, and Lindsay!), and I'm very pleased with everything. It's definitely worth noting that I went to Smart Resources at perhaps the height of the countrywide jobless freakout this winter. Not only were they the only temp agency to find me a good (or workable) gig that allowed me to utilize my skills, but they didn't try to lowball me on the hourly earnings. (I actually had another place, Lakeshore Staffing, say they would only be able to offer me less money than I made while temping for them three years ago - absurd!) In short, I highly recommend Smart Resources. I can't speak to direct-hire positions, as I was only looking for something to tide me over before returning to school this fall, but they're the BEST when it comes to securing great temp work! read more

I am native New Yorker who has recently relocated to Chicago. This agency made the process of finding work easier to cope with. It immediately eased my mind to hear that they staff alot of Office, Administration, and Customer Service - welcoming a range of skills but please note: solid skills and experience really help you here. I am working with Lauren. We spoke first over the phone about my skills/expectations and she then invited me in for an interview. I was greeted at the front desk by May the receptionist - she is a sweet, professional person and she was so willing to help and made me feel comfortable in an instant (rare in other nyc offices). Next I met with Lauren, She was so honest and forthcoming with everything - giving great advice on how it all works, professional appearance and resume effectiveness. For right now, I'm going to give Smart Resources four stars. I'll definitely amend this once I begin working. :) I graduated from college about a year ago. Though I had some great jobs and internships while in college, I've really struggled in this job market (as many of you have too). In January I applied to a few different staffing firms. The interviews I had were rushed and very impersonal. The testing was done with out of date software (I'm talking Windows 98/2000). I expressed an interest in the type of work I had hoped to find but also said I was open to doing whatever my skills lended themselves to. I was able to get sporadic work with those other staffing firms. After reading really positive reviews, I decided to apply to Smart Resources earlier this week. The same day, I received an email from Boa and spoke with her on the phone. She was very professional and we went into some detail about my previous experiences and what kind of work I was looking for. Today I went in for my interview with Xavier. And you know what? It was great. He was great. We went in depth about my experience, my expectations, my soft skills, and my software skills, etc. We talked about what kind of jobs I am ideally looking for and he really seemed to take into account what I want to be doing. He also gave me tips on how to make my resume more appealing, how to use LinkedIn, and what kind of networking events I should be checking out. Seriously, it was super helpful and made me feel like I can trust in them to keep my interests and strengths in mind when placing me. Initially, a great experience. read more

In February I was laid off of work. I began my job hunt prior to my last day and continued for 6 weeks after. NOTHING was biting and I was getting worried. I finally got a job but it wouldn't start until the middle of May and would take me out of Chicago for 3 months. What to do in the meantime? Through a friend of a friend (and our connection on facebook) I was referred to Lindsey at Smart Resources. Now, I don't have a lot of obvious administrative experience and I'm not the best at MS programs but I'm personable, hard working and (frankly) an adult with common sense. And despite my lack of admin experience and that I'm leaving Chicago for the summer, she didn't turn me down. Since the end of March, Lindsey and Maren have kept me busy. I've met some great people (Smart Staff, other temps and clients), learned some new things and have had a great time. Not all the jobs were admin and that's fine by me! However all the jobs matched my strengths and involved previous experience. I can't ask for a better group of people helping me get work and I will definitely be back when I return to Chicago! read more

I have been working for them for over a month. They have been really flexible with my crazy musician schedule. They are really great about communication with the temp staff, a huge plus. Great environment in their own office which is nice when you fast temp. I highly recommend this agency. The only downside I've seen so far is that sometimes their inter-agency communication could be better. I'll get contacted by one recruiter for work, start working, then get a message from another recruiter about availability for hours I'm arleady designated to work that were given to me by the first recruiter. read more

I was employed through Smart Resources for six months in a customer service position. The job allowed me to work from home while pursuing my other interests. Prior to that engagement, they found me a few short-term positions. The staff at Smart is helpful and courteous. My only complaint (if you can call it that) would be that it took the agency the better part of a year to find me a long-term posting which fit my schedule. Earlier this summer I was looking for a job and I stumbled across a temporary gig on Craigslist for a walking job that involved data entry. It was only 4 days and claimed to pay $300 to $400. I applied thinking it would be a great way to earn extra money while I looked for something more permanent. The job was to start nearly a month later. I spent $10 to get a day pass to attend Smart Resources unpaid "orientation" for the job and we were told to refer friends, because the agency needed over 130 workers for the project. They said we could get $ if our referrals worked 40 hours with the company, so I asked my friends, thankfully they couldn't do it. We were then informed that we would receive several emails to confirm that we could do the project. They needed a few drivers for the project too, but informed us that driving wasn't necessary. Over the next month I received about 7 emails and a couple of calls to confirm that I was still doing the project.These emails contained codes such as "walking" and we had to reply to the message with the code word to confirm that we were still interested in the project. They told us we would attend a 4 hour paid training session but nobody responded to my email when I asked if I could attend the evening session (2 days before the session). This should have been my first clue they are unprofessional because we were required to respond to their emails promptly, but nobody could respond to mine? Because it took me awhile to find a job and my current job doesn't offer enough hours, money has been REALLY tight. When I got my 1st check it all went towards rent, my 2nd check was the 1st $ I had in 2 weeks, so I enjoyed it thinking I had $ coming from this walking gig. All this time I was still getting emails from Smart Resources about the project. Two days before the project I get an email asking if I can drive, I don't have a license so I wrote them back saying no. The next day, the day before I was supposed to start this gig they call me to tell me they had to cut the participants down to 60 and they needed drivers, so I can't do the gig. They also called me on a prepaid phone and I only had 4 minutes left (I called them back on my main phone). That is so completely unprofessional! They certainly knew they had to cut their numbers in half, so why did they cancel last minute? If they had told me sooner I could have saved more $ from my 2nd paycheck + I wasted $10 going to them and several minutes responding to their dumb ass emails and phone calls. Bao told me that they would be happy to work with me in the future, but they have to be on crack if they think I would ever bother doing business with them again. Thankfully I got a 20% raise at my current job and I have some production assistant gigs later this month, so I will be okay financially. Just don't waste your time on this paltry excuse for a job agency. They SUCK and need to hire some smart people like myself to turn things around. This is not how you treat temp workers! PS: Shortly after writing this review I received an email from the staffing agency. They said something along the lines of "We're sorry, but the company that hired us to look for workers requested fewer workers at the last minute. This company did the SAME thing last year and we're considering no longer doing business with them." WOW! I didn't think it was possible for me to have less respect for a company but they made it happen. Incompetent much? read more

I was contacted by Xavier at Smart Resources in March. Before coming in I had to take 45 minutes worth of "tests" online. The screening/interview was unnecessarily intense. Then I had to sit in the front office and take a "data entry" exam. During the interview he asked me all about my experience and what I'd like to be doing in the temp world, for how long, what were my interests, etc. As I have previous receptionist, admin assistant, and program manager experience I thought it all went very well and he had a great idea of where my interests and skills lay. I was contacted a month later about an "outside job that required a lot of walking." Curious, and also in need of money I agreed. This job was 4 days of walking for 12 hours each in the freezing wind, pouring rain, and intense heat. My back was killing me after the last day. This job paid $11.03/hour. Interestingly, last week I ran into my teammate from this job who'd gone through a different temp agency (found on Craigslist) and learned he had been paid $12.25/hour for exactly the same thing! Greedy Smart had scammed us. While on this job I had talked to an out-of-work chemist who'd been with Smart since last fall, and the only jobs they found for her were these seasonal walk-for-12-hours positions. Couldn't they find something that matched our skills, rather than work a high-schooler could do? It was insulting to say the least. Xavier's attitude was always flippant; I was someone who should appreciate this lone, $11/hr job he had so generously graced me with. He also threw a fit when I signed-out 5 minutes later than the actual time to fill out an evaluation he said was mandatory. Powerrrrrrrr trip....... Getting paid was a hassle too. They don't have direct deposit as an option like other temp agencies, and if I want/need my check on Tues I have to go downtown and pick it up, or else they mail it and I won't get it until Fri or Sat. Typical Smart, thinking we lowly temps have nothing better to do. All in all, this temp agency does not have the best interests of its recruits in mind. I don't know why they even contact well-qualified candidates and get our hopes up if they are not going to find us reasonable, regular positions. Don't waste your time with Smart. read more

Horrible experience. I sent them my resume and received a phone call a few days later. They were very specific in what they were looking for in terms of previous work experience, i.e. Executive Assistant or Paralegal roles. Apparently I do not fit their profile even though I have 8 years or work experience, a Bachelor's degree and speak 3 languages fluently. I have worked both in Europe and the US for a number of notable and highly profitable companies. The phone conversation was disappointing, lasted for about a minute, and ended promptly after I was told they cannot help me even though we did not discuss my resume in depth. Disappointing experience overall. I would NOT recommend working with this staffing agency to anyone. read more

Initially, I had been very hopeful about working with Smart Resources, especially after reading the reviews on here. I submitted my application and resume online and within a day I received a rejection email stating that I didn't meet the criteria for the type of workers they employ. However, the following day I got a phone call to come in and interview with them. I was kind of confused, but set up the interview anyways. My interview with them went well and I did fairly well on the in-office proficiency tests. I did one job with them that was pretty physically demanding and requested a clerical position next (like I had requested in the beginning). I diligently called in every week with open availability and never received another job offer from them. On a side note, I had begun work with my temporary work authorization card and one woman in the office was very rude to me over the phone when I was trying to explain the situation to her. This was the same woman who interviewed me initially and, at the time, seemed friendly. This was the basis for my decision to explore other temp agencies. I decided to go to another temporary agency and they offered me a full time semi permanent data entry/clerical position in a large, well-known company within 3 days. They also allowed me to take the proficiency tests from the comfort and convenience of my own home. I wouldn't recommend this temp agency. The pattern of previous reviews suggests that a representative of Smart Resources will comment on my review, stating why my review is incorrect, or that I wasn't qualified for clerical or data entry type positions. The fact that Smart Resources did not help me at all and were, in fact, quite rude to me over the phone in combination with the fact that I received a very good office job within 3 days of interviewing with a different temporary agency should speak for itself. I wouldn't necessarily recommend people avoid this agency, but if they don't seem as if they will be helpful to your specific job pursuit, my advice is to not hesitate to look elsewhere and stop communicating with them. read more

I had just returned from a year abroad this past November and was looking for employment when a friend recommended Smart Resources to me. Xavier called within a day of my submitting my online request. We set up an interview for the following day, I completed the online application that evening, and upon arriving at Smart's office the took some proficiency tests before meeting with Xavier. My interview with him was probably the most enjoyable employment interview I've ever had. His questions weren't typical job interview questions. He asked questions which really got at what I'm passionate about and where I see myself in the future. He called me that afternoon and asked me if I'd like to do their FAST program the following day (show up to the office by 8am and if a client calls needing a temp you go out and work for the day; if not, you're guaranteed 4 hours of work at $10/hour engaging in miscellaneous tasks at Smart Resources' office). I arrived the next morning, and no clients called, so I spent some time 8am-12pm reading a book, doing light paperwork, and making phone calls. While I was there, Dana (another recruiter) asked if I would be interested in working at a nonprofit organization in the city the following day. I accepted, and the following two days I worked at An Ounce of Prevention Fund. Obviously, temp work isn't always the most thrilling thing-- I spent two days labeling/stuffing envelopes for a HUGE mass mailing. Not the most exciting work, but it was much better than sitting at home wondering how I was going to pay my bills. That Friday afternoon, I received a call from Xavier with an offer to work at Groupon. It would be a long-term assignment, and although customer service isn't one of my great passions in life, I accepted the offer for the security of a longer-term gig. Besides, Groupon seemed like it would be a fun place to work. I started at Groupon the following Tuesday (one week after my initial interview with Xavier) and worked there for just over eight weeks. I had a good time at Groupon. Answering phones all day can be draining, but we got regular breaks; the customers were nice for the most part, and my coworkers really made the job fun. The majority of my coworkers were also temps. We had fun, good camaraderie, and I formed some great friendships during my time there. I left on good terms, and in fact, some of my coworkers are still there (some have gone full-time with Groupon), and I'm thankful that a time in my life (unemployment) which had major potential to be awkward and uncomfortable was actually... not bad at all. I left my temp position at Groupon because I received a full-time job offer with my dream organization that I had begun pursuing around the same time I first applied to Smart Resources. I know that some have had negative experiences with Smart Resources. I think it all really depends on the time of year, the economy, and what's available. It worked out nicely for me, and it's too bad it hasn't worked out for some of these others. But for what it's worth, in my position at Groupon I worked with many other temps from Smart who (I think) have also had positive experiences. To Xavier and Smart Resources, thank you for what you did for me. You helped me through a difficult time. I sincerely hope that I'm not in a position again to look for temporary employment, but I know that should it happen, I can count on you. read more

After completing the application I was told that my years of administrative work was not recent or specific enough for their clients. Right when you walk into this place, you feel a great team atmosphere. The receptionists, the recruiters, everyone is very friendly and outgoing. My recruiters Dana and Xavier are very friendly and knowledgeable (I can't speak for everyone else, though I'm SURE everyone shares their great qualifications) understood my strengths as well as my motivations for getting temp work, and they were very eager to work with me. Megan Shine of Smart Resources was the most friendly recruiter I've ever worked with. She was very engaging and seemed to actually read my resume. She reached out to me every week to let me know she was still looking. The few interviews I had were with very good organizations, and was genuinely sad that I didn't get the positions. Libby was wonderful, as well. She always managed to find me a temp position when money got absurdly tight. I couldn't have hoped for a better person working with me when the job market tightened up so much. If I were to move back to Chicago, I would send Smart Resources my resume in an instant. They were impeccable, and even the receptionist was chatty and friendly while I waited. Love love love them! read more

The only thing I don't like about them. They have an antiquated system for their timesheets. Every agency I have worked for they have the timesheet online, but Smart Resources does not. You have to fill out the timecard, fax it to them (sometimes they get it, often times they don't), if they don't receive it, you have to walk over there. I don't know what clients do if they don't work close to their offices. read more

My experience with Smart Resources was wonderful. They are really professional and friendly people to work with. I mostly communicated with Maren Chan and she is really a nice person to talk to. Although I ended up finding a job myself, as I was particularly interested in working at a University or for a non-profit organization, I did get an opportunity to work on two temporary assignments through them. Personally these experiences were really helpful for me to get a better understanding of working in a corporate office, networking with people and most importantly making my resume look stronger. Firstly, let me start by saying that going into the interview, this was the worst staffing agency that I have ever worked for. The pay is horrible for the work that they ask you to do. There was no one at the front desk to greet me, so I waited for about 10 mins for someone to finally ask if I had been helped. The recruiter are all about making a quota. I began my journey for a company called Mitsubishi in Itasca. When I started with the company I expressed to the recruiters as well as the company that I was ill and would need certain days off for doctors visits, which they both told me it was OK and there would be no problem. I then asked for my belongings, which was a desk fan at the value of $22, a cheap Walmart hat at the value of $10 and leather wallet that contained my ID and SSC(Dumb for carrying it I know). Here it is 3 months later and I still do not have my belongings. I sent an email to EVERY contact I have for them and have not received a response. Smart resources agreed to reimburse me a $25 check for my belongings. That is all I wanted and now can move forward. This staffing company was recommended to me. I checked out their website and could easily see that this may be a good fit since it seemed that they specialize in placing people with office experience. The website tells you to complete an application, view the job searches and you will get a call in a few days. I did per the instructions on May 1, 2015. I also saw a few listings that I felt that I was qualified for and applied. By mid May I had not received a call from anyone from the Smart Resources office so I telephoned them. I can't remember who I spoke with but I explained to her that I had gone on the website, completed an application, and applied for a few positions. She looked for my information and informed me it was not there and I needed to go back and apply. I tried to do this but I kept getting a message reading I was in the system. In the meantime I was getting emails for available positions that "fit my resume" to which I applied. It is now June 18, 2015 and I still have not heard from anyone in that office. I telephoned them on Thursday June 12, 2015 and explained the situation after asking what was their procedure. I was informed to email Bao directly and attach my resume and someone would contact me. Well as I previously wrote, I have not heard from anyone. Based on this experience I would not recommend them nor do I want them to try and staff me and I have informed the person that recommended them to stop. read more

I attemped to apply with this company about a year ago looking to move on from my current job. They seemed really nice and understanding of the fact that I needed to move forward. HERE IS THE CLINCHER! These people called my current employer trying to see if they could fill my current job and I had not even had an interview with them. How unprofessional is that? Even after I declined to speak with them, they kept calling and calling until one day they stopped calling. How dare you people jepardize my job asking to speak to my HR department. BEWARE when you call, hide your phone humber...HORRIBLE company with no morals. read more
