If I could give less than 1 star I would. Most unprofessional people I've ever worked with. Complete lack of communication and zero customer service, when I couldn't get in touch with them, they actually used the word "nagging" in an email back to me. They take no responsibility for their mistakes or oversights. I live and work in KCMO and they forgot to do those until I called the day they were due. They also didn't complete 2021 taxes until the end of 2022, so now I'm the one upside down with what I owe. read more

These ladies are spot on the BEST! They did our last minute extension out of state Hawaii and in state Kansas taxes super fast and got us refunds! We have getting our taxes prepared here for several years putting up with phone calls not retuned, emails not answered and short tempered responses. Been with these ladies for years. They have done a fabulous job not only for my personal returns, but also my corporation. So, we are very disappointed with Kathy. It seemed so good at the start, but once we left the office after our first visit, it went downhill from there. Horrible communication, like would not (AND STILL WON'T) return emails or phone calls. Then we discover that she has put wrong information (like a social security number and an EIN number, two VITAL pieces of information) and even after we notify the office she won't return calls or emails. I don't know about you, but if I did this I would be moving heaven and earth to fix this, but she is completely ignoring what she did. If I could give a negative score, I would. We paid almost seven hundred dollars for this, and we are still dealing with her mistakes. Avoid at all costs. I will be filing complaints everywhere I possibly can until they fix this. read more

This was my third year seeing Kathy Burlison at SmartSpot and it's the same great experience every time. I first saw Kathy when I bought my house with my boyfriend and we were unsure how to file our taxes with the house. She made the process so simple and told us our best options. This year I went in and it only took 40 minutes which included catch up chit-chat. It's also completely affordable. I used to do my own taxes. Once it got too complicated (rental property, medical deductions, etc.) I went to SmartSpot on a referral. That was last year. And even though my taxes were relatively easy this year, I went back to Kathy this year because the experience was worth it. She's quirky but has an endless knowledge of tax law, and if she doesn't know the answer, she knows exactly where to go to look for it. And besides finishing my taxes in just 45 minutes, she spends time listening to me complain about my job, my house, the weather, what I had for lunch -- you name it. Had my taxes done with them for many years, then I became a part-time employee. They told me that they had trouble keeping receptioinsts because of the seasonal nature of the job. That should have been a red flag. Two of the oddest people I have ever worked for, strange quirks, like not being allowed to use post-it notes, getting upset if I approached their desks I o ask questions, admonished if I clicked a pen. Always had dogs in the office, which was fine, but one saved her paper towels from using the restroom to clean up dog messes and put them right next to my desk. The office was filthy, especially the kitchenette. Listened to phone calls and assumed they knew what the person on the other end was saying so would talk or yell answers to me. I couldn't make sense of what either saying. Didn't want to talk to clients And would be unhappy if calls were transferred. Took very little responsibility for things that happened, tending to blame others. Lots of emotional outbursts occurred - anger, crying, etc. When I got laid off during the first year of Covid, it was a blessing. Their work might be good, but not good as an employer. And I've heard recently that one of their dogs got loose at the office, bit a person and killed their dog on a walk. That was not a surprise to hear. read more

My experience with this business has been so frustrating and wasteful. I own a small business and rely on prompt service and advisement. I got neither. After a year of asking many questions I am left with the same questions and now a mess. Professionalism is definitely not a quality they stand by. After I fired this company, they sent a few hateful emails and are withholding documents for which I clearly paid to have done. Taxes and laughs, what could be better? Came to see Smart Spot peeps last March after former accountant messed quite a few things up. They 1.fixed them all and got my business back on track and 2. I finally understood exactly how the IRS views self employed people and how to minimize risks. Also they explained how the laws had changed and if I did not change how I paid myself, it could trigger an audit--more than likely. I had not found this kind of sharing of knowledge before and its made me and my business more on it! For some reason, we have lots of laughs when I go in so that makes it all the better. Horrified by the promises that were not kept and the unprofessional, down right rude behavior of both owners. Shockingly disappointing experience. I still can't believe the childish end to our business relationship. They left us hanging and refused to respond to professional requests for needed information to reestablish our bookkeeping with our new accounting professionals. Do not be deceived by their seemingly kind and fun loving demeanor. Once they can't fulfill their promises they completely cut you off and turn into complete tyrant adversaries who you won't even recognize. I fear writing this because their threats are so ugly and their tempers are so vengeful, but I wish someone had warned us before getting involved with this organization professionally.
