This place is so good, friendly small town deliciousness. The staff are so friendly, the ice cream is so delicious. A medium for about $6.50 is HUGE and I couldn't eat all of it. Oh well. It was amazing. The fresh banana ice cream is some of the best ice cream I ever had. All the staff are so friendly, nice, and helpful. The inside is clean and inviting. Wasn't too crowded when I went but it was January so it is probably more crowded in summer. There's outdoor seating too, but again, it was January. This place is amazing. Boston cream a gimmick and the fresh peach tasted only of sugar. Smiley's is one of my absolute favorite places. I regularly would drive an hour each way to visit their shop. The flavors of the week/month are always exciting and worth stopping in for. I have multiple food allergies (including eggs, nuts) and have never felt as comfortable ordering ice cream as I do at their shop, given their extensive allergy protocols, accessible information, and knowledgable staff. I'm originally from across the mountain and before getting married my wife brought me a here a few times and once to the old location. First off, where I'm from there is not (to my knowledge at least) an ice cream place that makes their own ice cream in house and/or uses ingredients within the same town/walking distance to the source of the ingredients! The ice cream is good but there's been one or two flavors I wasn't impressed with (they weren't bad just not my forte). Also, compared to every other ice cream place I've ever been in (not a lot just a few) this place is huge and it's beautiful!!! The staff is always friendly with one young lady once noticing my UVA shirt I had and complimented it I think. There are so many choices and different ways to get your ice cream. Because the farm where their cream comes from is so close it's almost like two local businesses under one roof. If you want real ice cream and not soft-serve then come to Smiley's. For starters the place was not busy just a few sitting inside that already had their ice creams and chatting. Walking up to register the workers were just behind the wall chatting away and not watching the front. Ordered the red velvet cupcake and at first I was asked if I wanted a bag to put it in. But no. I wanted to eat it in the establishment. No wonder they asked. It was frozen solid. Which they should have said that to let people know. Then I ordered a butterscotch milkshake. Yeah that was a weird one. Tasted more like caramel and had chucks of the odd tasting sauce. Like it wasn't mixed and or they didn't care. Not even sure what the homemade salted caramel taste like. For my first trip to Bridgewater it certainly brought a smile to my face when I was told there was some fresh dairy ice cream around the corner. We had to stop by on our visit home. The ice cream was smooth, creamy and delicious! We got the Salted Caramel Chocolate Chunk, Coconut Almond Chocolate Chunk, and because we had the dog with us I couldn't resist getting the Pup Cup after spotting it on the menu! Rooney got a special treat to have his first taste of ice cream + a milk bone from some happy cows which we could spot in the distance. Our family of four went here for ice cream while staying at Massanutten Resort. Our kids love ice cream and would eat it every day if they could. We had just went to an ice cream shop a few days before right near the resort that we all really enjoyed so this place had a high bar to live up to. We drove a good 30-35 minutes from the resort through beautiful farms and rolling hills and came upon a large building with a lot of covered outside seating. The parking lot was large and there were a lot of cars there. This must be a very popular ice cream place for the area. Inside also had a lot of seating and what looked like a banquet room. Before arriving, my wife was suggesting a banana split because the listed flavors on their website didn't seem exciting to her but after sampling some of the ice cream, she decided to get 2 scoops in a waffle cone. She got a scoop of coconut almond chocolate chunk and black raspberry. My wife and daughter said the black raspberry was not as good as the last ice cream shop but it held its own in flavor. My 10 year old daughter got a scoop of black raspberry and chocolate Oreo. My 7 year old son got a scoop of death by chocolate and chocolate in a waffle cone. I got a scoop of death by chocolate and peanut butter & jelly. The peanut butter & jelly tasted just like a sandwich made the same way. We wanted to note that since it was our first time there we didn't know what flavors to get so we each tried about two or three different flavors each. After getting about 6-7 samples the ice cream server got tired of us asking for samples and started to give us a face and just basically sat down in front of the register and asked her coworkers to get the samples for us. She then took our order and refused to get up anymore to make the ice cream and got everyone else to do it. Not sure what was going on or if she had some type of condition/issue but we tried to brush it off and enjoy the delicious and reasonably priced ice cream. A small was two large scoops! I don't know how to describe the experience of eating fresh churned ice cream made with simple ingredients, but I bet if there's an ice cream parlor in Heaven they use Smiley's old recipes. We came to Smileys after getting the recommendation from our hot air balloon pilot after seeing the fireworks for their grand opening of the new building mid-flight. According to the website the ice cream is made fresh daily in house and it definitely tasted like it. I ordered a small chocolate shake and it was delicious. It was a good size even for a small and just what I wanted. The building it very large for an ice cream shop and had a nice outdoor eating area that wrapped around the side of the building. In my personal opinion, the best ice cream in Virginia. I've been to several famous ice cream shops around VA, from Moo-Thru to Peterson's, but none have left me as impressed as Smiley's. About a 15 minute drive from JMU, once you arrive on-site, what greets you is a nice little dairy farm on one side and a nice little ice cream shop on the other. It's pretty amazing to see just how fresh the products are. The ice cream selection comes with a variety of flavors that include monthly and weekly flavors. At the time I went, the weekly flavors were Thin Mint and Banana Nut. The monthly flavor was Death by Chocolate. I got both the weekly flavors in a two scoop ($4.09). As every great ice cream store should, they provide quite the generous scoops. The ice cream was ridiculously creamy and smooth. One bite and I already claimed it as one of my top favorite ice cream's. The flavors were on point, the two flavors I got tasted exactly like thin mints and banana nut bread. It was light and refreshing, yet decadent and sweet-tooth satisfying. A perfectly balanced ice cream. Overall, the ice cream went beyond my already high expectations and pleasantly surprised me. 10/10 would recommend visiting. read more
