We love a visit to the original Papa Jim's. Parking can be a bit of a squeeze on a hot summer evening when everyone has the same idea. Window service keeps things simple and streamlined and the (usually teenager) employees are always friendly. Good old fashioned soft serve ice cream parlor. My kids usually get a flavor swirl cone, inevitably dripping everywhere, but you have to embrace the mess when you're eating ice cream outside on a summer day. They have tried orange, blue raspberry, and raspberry I think. They like em all, but personally the orange is my fave in my sampling. I usually get a choc/vanilla swirl cone. Classic and delicious. My husband goes for milkshakes often. Also classic, also delicious. We were happy when Papa Jim's opened a second location but the original location here can't be beat for old timey country ice cream parlor vibes. read more

My family and I love coming to PaPa Jim's to get their soft serve. We have also enjoyed their cookie ice cream sandwiches, their shakes, and some of their hard ice cream flavors. My personal favorite is a combination of their butter pecan, strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla soft serve in a bowl with sprinkles and a waffle cone on the side. To start off with, the wonderful window girl, Mallory, was so pleasant and cheery that it started things off great. As newbies to Papa Jim's, we were not sure of what to get and she was so helpful and courteous. We ordered waffle cones and thought we were getting small but got large. What a grand pile of deliciousness with the imported hard ice creams from Wisconsin. I had the turtle and my wife had the butter pecan and we both shared and both found both delicious.. but it was a big big cone and five times as much ice cream as I usually eat, but eat it, w e did. We are locals and Papa Jim's has always been a go-to for us! But this evening we stopped by there about 6:15pm and stood in a pretty long line, but I didn't think it was a big deal because they are usually pretty quick... Wrong :/ We waited almost 25 minutes before deciding to leave. Nobody was taking orders or informing customers of what was going on inside. Then again, we went back around 8:40pm and there was no line. We waited at the order window for 5 minutes before a worker came to take our order with 3 worker inside! I love stopping by places that aren't chain restaurants. Papa Jim's is a great place to visit when you're looking for a treat. The Arctic Blast (similar to a DQ Blizzard) is generous. Their kid dishes come with a gummy bear on top, which has always been a hit with my kids. The parking lot can get busy and you need to take care that you don't bottom out your car when pulling in/out. Otherwise, this beats out the other local ice cream options that we've found. We asked Mama Ann, one of the owners, of her popular recommendations - it was milkshakes, as they use real fruit chopped into them. I got to try the Tropical Orange (tasted kind of like an orange soda), Strawberry (delicious with little chunks of strawberry), and Banana (chunks of banana) - since they were made with soft serve, it is not thick, so keep that in mind. Fairly priced but one complaint amongst my group with the sundaes was "too little ice cream and too much chocolate syrup." However, the service is super friendly and the atmosphere has a happy, relaxed summer feel and is a great local family gathering place. We drove 38 minutes from Scottsville and it was worth it!
