I have a dog that has severe anxiety about getting his nails trimmed, so a friend suggested this place to me and told me to ask for Penny. I have gone to many different groomers all over the city, as well as full sedation by VCA, still, it was too costly or not effective till the day I met Penny. She is the dog-whisperer, she calmed my dog and figured out what his true weakness was, (hint, it wasn't his nails). I am forever grateful and tears of joy are what I have to show for it. read more

Hands down, the best place to go for grooming if you're looking for caring, responsible and knowledgeable. Penny, the owner, has always treated my dogs with great care. She always takes time to speak to the owners and ask how we are doing, she is truly a caring person. Our shitzu/poodle mix needed special attention because she had an eye injury and Penny always made sure she was comfortable and safe during her groom. Our other dogs that we've brought throughout the years were always treated well too. We went there for years and always saw a lot of the same faces, which is a good sign to see staff retention. The building is also always clean and prices are typical for what you'd pay elsewhere. Give this place a try, you will see what makes it so special. read more

This groomer is the BEST. Penny is so friendly. You can tell she lives and breathes dogs, in the best way. She really makes you feel comfortable leaving your fur baby there. She will remember you and your dog. Aside from making you both feel comfortable, she makes sure you know exactly what cut your dog is getting. I mean, down to the inches of hair they plan on leaving. A little neurotic, sure; but, they won't mess it up that way! We followed our groomer, Cortney, here from her previous employer. Cortney is amazing. She is so patient and kind. I truly trust her with my dog. This place is a little more pricey than others, but you really get what you pay for here. Just the best! read more

We brought our tiny pup here for many years until he became elderly and they refused to groom him because he couldn't stand for long. I thought that was strange to refuse service due to a dogs age slowing them down. It always took all day for them to groom him. After he passed away, we adopted 2 dogs and they both acted like they were going to the guillotine when we brought them in. I always dreaded having them stay there all day to get groomed when they hated it so much. I eventually realized from comments that the people seem to be "faking" like they are sweet when greeting clients, but are really mean to pups. We now drive farther away to bring our dogs to Petsmart for grooming. Petsmart and even Independent groomers only keep them for 2-3 hours max. not 5-8 hours like this one. The price is better elsewhere and dogs are happier too! read more

Took my 10 year old aussie here for the 2nd time today. I wasn't wild about the 1st time which was somewhere around Thanksgiving but they seemed nice and the price was reasonable. I dropped her off a little before 9 and was told it would be later in the day before she was done. I made sure to tell her to clip her nails, mainly because I don't believe they did the last time. She called around 4:30 to tell me that she was done but she was no longer allowed to return. Apparently, while they were clipping her nails she had become aggressive and bit someone and head butted another. I can see the headbutt happening accidentally because I've been the recipient of a few. Aussies have powerful necks and when they snap it, if you're in the way, ouch. However, she's never been aggressive a day in her life. As soon as we got in the car, I noticed her kinda snorting like a pig.I don't know what that's about. If it doesn't clear up in a day or 2, I'll be taking her to the vet. Also she won't eat and seems despondent. Not to mention, she shaved her back side like nothing I've ever seen. It's an Australian shepherd. They have flowing fur. I don't know what happened there but this the 2nd time a so-called "professional" dog groomer has hurt my dog.They should probably stick to purse dogs. Better name would be "the frowning dog". Not to mention, they charged me $80. As long as they take, maybe they're charging for boarding. read more

My puppies first visit here and we are so impressed. You can tell that they really care about dogs. Penny explains everything to you and really took her time getting our fur baby used to the groomers. My little man looks so handsome and was giving the groomer a lot of kisses. read more

Took my puppy, Flap back for his second groom at Smilin Dog. I am extremely dissatisfied! I was told he had mats, and would need to have them shaved off. When I picked him up, I nearly fainted...he looked like a hot dog and had huge Mickey Mouse ears! He didn't even look like the same puppy! He is a Bichon Frise but all my neighbors thought he was a poodle. His face is shaved like a poodle, which does not sit well with a Bichon Frise owner. When we got in the car, I noticed he had vomit on his whole chin! Needless to say, I'm searching for a new groomer. All this aggravation and I was charged $78!!! Never again! read more

Wonderful place for pet grooming!!! The owner greets you at drop off and pick up. She really makes you feel welcome. The rest of the ladies there are super nice as well. They have done a great job on my little yorkie. I always worry when I leave her somewhere because she has joint issues. But not here! They do a great job and a great price. But honestly it's how they handle my dog that keeps me coming back time and time again. In recent months, I've moved a good 30 minutes away, and I still don't mind making the drive for such good service. Try this place you won't be disappointed. read more

We took the dogs to "The Smilin Dog" on 13 mile in Roseville. The first thing that happened was she gave us a tour of the entire place. We discussed what we hoped she could do, but gave permission to do what was needed bc of a few matt issues. This shop is over 20 years old with 2 of the groomers who have been there over 16 yrs. We gave permission for a muzzle, but she said bc all 3 dogs didn't like their feet she felt it was because of how they were done in the past. So they had one person pet and talk to them, one person holding up the belly and the owner worked on the paws. She said once the dogs learn that this will not hurt they will calm down in time. I agree with her. They were done when they said they would be. When we went in we didn't hear any dogs barking or crying. I was shocked by that. She did say Luna panted heavy when first put in but it only lasted 10 minutes. They came out looking just wonderful. We are over the moon with the care that they got. Our 2 month appointment is already on the calendar. I give 5 stars. read more

I LOVVVVEEEE this place!! Everyone is so friendly and helpful!! Very nice!! It sucks they take all day doing her but i always tell them to take their time. If shes done with grooming and needs a break so be it. We;ll pick her up when shes ready so its a good thing. They give you an option on a time to pick her up or a phone call. They require shot records which, imo is a good thing! Realistically i just wish they were a little cheaper. For me it ranges, $40-$50 diff. Theyre great! Took my Golden here after a few people recommended this groomer and I am very happy. I called on a busy Saturday and got him in that day. His coat is soft and shiny and smelled very good. We had a 14 year old wheaten terrier that was not an easy dog to groom. To us Chia was the sweetest dog we every had. But we new he could be a pistol too. This shop was the ONLY one of many we took him back too. Without drugs he was the most well behaved pet when he was there. The owner is a chia whisperer ( lol) and we thank you. Penny the owner was able to trim my petrified rescues nails after many failures including vet tech. She gently talked Buddy thru it while I paced in the waiting room. She assures me each time will be easier. The nails were like claws and the grandkids and I are much happier since he thinks he is a lap dog.
