Even when his palms were sweaty and he had vomit on his sweater already (Mom's Spaghetti). It's the furthest of the finger lakes, there are 10 others to the North and East.

We haven't been…read moreto Silver Lake before, and decided to make this our destination to enjoy the scenic autumn lake. Silver Lake State Park itself is pretty small, and consists of a large parking area, a boat launch, a public restroom, a small playground, a small pavilion, and about a dozen or so picnic areas, each with a table, grill, and firepit. There is a small dock, I'm guessing for kayakers to use, which we sat on to enjoy the lake breezes; it was a very warm fall 85-degree day when we visited, so this was nice. Silver Lake itself is bigger than I thought it would be, probably a decent, roomy lake if you are a boater, maybe comparable to one of the smaller Finger Lakes. We didn't fish this day, but there were several fisherpeople along the shores too, still with plenty of room to spread out. One thing lacking from this park is any nature trails. We walked the perimeter of the picnic areas, and didn't find any trailheads. Since one of our favorite things to do as a fam' is what we call "adventure walks" through the woods, no trails here was a let-down. The main draw is really the boat launch, or if you want to picnic with lake views. Admission was $6, paid at a self-service terminal when you come in. Since they did have an open public bathroom facility (that was pretty clean), this was fair. If you're in the Silver Lake area looking for a picnic, fishing, and/or kayaking/boating spot, Silver Lake State Park will probably suit you well.

Three years ago, they finally found the perfect property - located in the cute little community of Lakewood - and, officially became the owners of multiple homes. Lake Chautauqua is surprisingly idyllic - set in the finger lakes of southwestern New York - it is surrounded by wineries and cute little communities like Bemis Point and Jamestown (which was the birthplace of Lucille Ball.) It's about 40 miles east of Erie, PA and 80 miles south of Buffalo; it is also easy to get to from Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and New York City. The lake it's self is about ten miles long and is great for fishing, boating, tubing and other variety of water sports. The Chautauqua Institute is nearby - hosting concerts and a series of high profile speakers (Al Gore, Jane Goodall most recently) throughout the year. The community of Lilydale is host to a psychic community (and, fairy houses) which is renowned throughout the country - a little wacky, if you ask me, but very interesting to visit. Year round it is a beautiful place to live: the colors in the fall are amazing, winter brings lots of ice fishing, skiing and such, spring and summer are big tourist times here. Frankly, the only time I am truly relaxed is for the two weeks of vacation I get to take with my family (yes, I know I am a dork for liking to hang out with my family on vacation.) We sleep late, eat well, sit around on the boat or deck reading/playing cards/staring at the mote in the middle distance, drink wine and just chillax. It's wonderful.

I've had an obsession with Lake Erie since the first time I set eyes on her a few decades ago, yes…read morewe've shared some memories that will last a life time. I lived not so far from her shores for a number of years so I've experienced her in all seasons and I say with certainty no particular one is my favorite since each are unique and all are special in some sense. My most recent visit from the shores of Buffalo in February is one of frozen sheets of ice jammed against the shore appearing lifeless and stranded, barren and eerie waiting in utter silence for the warmth of spring to thaw her surface and return the beauty she exhibits so beautifully. I've eaten a Tony Packo Dog on her shores in Toledo and skipped stones across the breaking waves near Edgewater Park outside Cleveland. This lake has provided so much to so many. I've drank wine and eaten hors d'oeuvre on a catamaran at sunset a mile or two from downtown Cleveland and ventured out before daylight from Geneva-on-the-Lake twenty five miles from Canada to catch a limit of walleye from a fishing charter. I've walked her frozen shores in Mentor as the ice shelves heaved onto the shore etching the sand while reshaping the shoreline and experienced the endless lake effect snows that buries the town of Chardon in late November, then camped on the shores at Presque Isle in the spring where you could see a lake perch grab your bait nearly thirty feet below the surface. The water that provides all the joy to so many while traveling over Niagara Falls into Lake Ontario never grows old, it's a very tranquil view no matter which shore you look over her...
