This is not an outfitter for the serious fisherman…read more This outfitter is an excellent communicator and expertly builds great media hype but he isn't able, or simply doesn't care to execute once he has your non-refundable deposit. Once you show up to the stretch of river he frequents you're met with obvious signs of local overfishing and the word from the hired hand the launch neighborhood has unwelcoming neighbors. Once you launch the guide is pleasant and great at building anticipation of the "fish around the bend" but of course there's no recent photos as proof. As the hours and drift time passes it becomes apparent that you've been duped. Honestly, It's a shame that a river with a legendary reputation turns out that the internet hype from this outfitter pulled us into a stretch of the river that's lack-luster and showing signs of overfishing. Secondly, a week out from the visit the weather was predicted to threaten the second half of the two day trip. Our group (4 fisherman) leader made it clear over the phone a number of times that being a group of seniors we wouldn't slog through thunderstorms and lightning and the outfitter agreed. At the end of the first day after being guided by his hired hand instead of the "expert" I thought I'd be fishing with, the threatening weather for the next day was now 100% predicted. The only recourse was to call the outfitter on the one hour drive to a recommended hotel that initially there was no idication it was that far from the launch site. After an hour of back-and-fourth trying to work out a cancellation the outfitter agreed to bump up a one hour correction to the launch time to 10 am which would had put me in the thick of the thunderstorms. He made no effort to look at the weather report and simply move up the launch to a reasonable 7am launch to miss the weather completely and get in a good days fishing. I woke to worse weather reports and threatening skys for dangerous lightning thunderstorms and 2" of rain predicted with 100% certainty. Again the telephone tag games started with the outfitter who was negating the weather reports. It sums up with his claims that he was going anyway and unless he cancels the trip we'd get no refund. Long story short, after two days of phone calls back and forth about the weather cancelation did the threat of a bad internet review get a PARTIAL refund for the 2nd day in which he sent a courier to deliver.

Waid Recreation Park is a nice community park in Rocky Mount, Virginia. It is the site of an annual…read morefoot race that challenge the mind and body. I was fortunate enough to be here on a brisk March 2026 weekend. I was nervous because of the weather being too cold because it was the first week of March and it can be quite cold right after transitioning out of Winter. Luckily for me, it turned out I didn't need to pack extra layers. The park itself is a sizable one that has a nice paved mile loop in and around the parking lot area and the main space that circles the park. My friend and I drove in on a Saturday in early March 2026 at around 6:30am to make sure we found parking. There were maybe 100 parking slots, if not more here. It was good and definitely a large size parking lot for anyone and everyone to enjoy Waid Recreational Park on any given day. The park is maintained by the local county parks department and they do a great job every day. My day was spent during the event walking and jogging around the paved trail around the park. There was one section of the park that was uphill that I didn't particularly enjoy or liked, but it was a necessary part of the experience here. For the most part though, my time here at Waid Recreational Park was happy and enjoyable while being with friends and making new friends while enjoying Waid Recreational Park. Once in a while, I tell myself that the travel to get here is part of the attraction. While I'm here, it's invaluable that I get to be here and enjoy what the day had to offer me and my friends. That is the gift that keeps on giving me. The overall experience here at Waid Recreational Park in Rocky Mount, Virginia was definitely worth the price of admission, even though there is no admission fee to enter the park. The park itself was well groomed and it was a swell day in the park. There was benches spaced out on the paved loop so that if I needed to, I could sit down and take a breather for a few minutes before soldering on. There wasn't much in terms of water fountains on site that I saw, but there was a restroom building in the middle of the park next to the parking lot, which came in handy for me. It was nice to have that day, especially when it was generally beneficial to use during my time here. The paved loop was less than a mile but with joining the smaller loop that crossed into the parking lot, it was just over a mile. The views were scenic although walking running laps around this area was a bit redundant but it had to be done. Although the drive to this park from the town of Rocky Mount seemed to be far enough, it was a good time to be had by all. For the most part though, coming to Waid recreational park was a good choice for many. I did enjoy sitting on the benches though. They're comfortable for being steel or aluminum made. If you find yourself in Rocky Mount, Virginia and need some respite from life, consider coming to Waid recreational park. It's a place that can accommodate your inner peace. Or bring you more comfort than life gives you. Waid Recreational Park is located in Rocky Mount, Virginia. A bit surprised since it was a drive from the main part of town, but it is what it is. It's physically located at 701 Waid Park Road, Rocky Mount, Virginia. No admission fee is required for the park entrance but if you want to rent something on park property for events, there is fees associated with that. As far as parking goes, there's plenty of parking for y'all who drive here and yes, driving is the ideal way to come here. If you are like me, public transportation in Rocky Mount is not the way to go, although there is the Ferrum Express that runs from Roanoke Virginia to some spots in Rocky Mount including Ferrum College. After arriving into Rocky Mount, you could just walk over to Waid Recreational Park at your leisure. There's always uber and Lyft service in the area or even in Roanoke, if you originally planned to fly in from there and travel to Rocky Mount. And so, if you enjoy nature and want to be in Rocky Mount, Virginia, consider coming out to this community park and stay awhile. You'll be glad you did. Just be aware that it can get cold in the winter and hot during the summers. 5.0 stars for the overall experience. Support local! A+

We were there when there was still snow on the ground, but we got in a good, long hike and will definitely return to explore some of the trails we missed this trip. Tubing and trout fishing are available and a full disc golf course! Waterfalls and ball fields and even bike trails and obstacle courses for bikes. What a fun place, can't wait to head back! Super clean and looked after and even REAL TOILETS which is rare of course in spots like this.

Fairystone, VA State Park is my 32nd VA State Park. This is…read moreone of my favorites! I booked a really nice Yurt for two nights. Has outside electrical and outside water pump. Restroom is a short walk away. The whole backside was open land. The whole left side was wooded. There was a picnic table, fire ring and another water source there as well as a small 4 seat wooden table on my wrap around porch! It was perfect. The trails were quite strenuous at times. Its rocky and steep! I took a 9 mile trail, linking trails together to tackle the Little Mountain Falls Trail. Beautiful views. Sunday morning I was on top of the mountain by 10am! Wooo. My pictures won't show the beauty that it was...but I was in love. Sitting on the porch with my binoculars.. I spotted a big, red headed wood pecker just having a blast out there pecking around. So many birds out there. It was very relaxing. - I brought my iron skillet and cooked up some salmon, zucchini and the $0.97 small cup of mac and cheese from Walmart! Fabulous dinner the first night. - I didn't, however go the "beach" or kayak. The roped off beach section, isn't the same w/o kids but I should have gone kayaking. So much to do. This VA State Park is one of my top 4, so far.

Like most VA state parks, they do a cash self-pay entrance, so you would either want to have an annual pass or some small bills. Cell reception was quite limited for me in this remote area, which may be what you want out of coming to a park.

The hiking trails at the Gravely Nature Preserve seem to be lesser known. The preserve itself is…read moredown a quiet little road in Ridgeway and we did not see any other hikers when we were there. Unlike other trails in the area, there is a lot more fallen dead along this trail so it looks rougher. The trail was easy to follow and there are several things to see along the way. Start on the end with the tobacco barn because the other end (the intended exit) is a fairly steep gradient. This is a rough trail and my mother could do it pretty easily with a cane but that hill at the end did concern me. There are several separate trails here. One, called the Rhododendron Trail, says that it goes through a tunnel of rhododendron. They bloom somewhere around May in our area so that is on my list to go back to see when they are in bloom. There is an old graveyard about midway along the main trail and one of the spur trails will take you to the old homesite. I want to go back sometime to find Eggleston Falls on the Smith River. I'm not sure that you can see it from here but I know that it is close. Eggleston Falls is, I think, a class II rapid on the Smith River.
