I Had a horrible time for Several reasons, first off the guide Zack was awful, a complete ass hole and went on up non stop about his personal life and even made a racist joke when we had a black guy on our raft . Acted like we were all idiots and I felt unsafe the whole time! Then when we get out of river the guides hand out beers to everyone that drank and continued to do so for the next hour on bus ride , Which made it a living hell with 19 people on a 12 passenger bus ! The guy driving the bus acted like he got paid by his arrival times there and from traveled a winding Road at crazy speeds . Honestly don't have one positive thing to say about The adventure I will never book thru this company again ! read more

Due to thunderstorms we asked River Expeditions if we could reschedule. They said no. I explained I bought the cancellation guarantee policy which said I could cancel WITHIN 72 hours. I was informed within 72 hours means prior to 72 hours and I was denied rescheduling. Within does not mean prior to. I've included the emailed policy here so everyone can see it says within. If the policy is prior to, no problem, but make that clear to the consumer. We're now out over 300 due to a safety concern which is why we paid extra for the cancellation policy. This is extremely questionable business. If you are a couple, family or group or friends, consider this before booking especially given hurricane season and Covid. UPDATE: Please note in the business owners response that she does not address that I opted into a policy stating I had within 72 hours. She completely missed the point. I hope this helps people understand that what they advertise is not what they provide. Don't book with them. There's some nice other options in the area. read more

It's a five hour drive (a little less if you are a fast driver) from the city through the beautiful George Washington and Jefferson and small West Virginian towns with mom and pop diners and ice cream parlors. It's beautiful! Once at River Expeditions, you're in a West Virginian paradise with everything you need on campus. The owners, Heather and Rick, have 44 years rafting experience between the two of them and they have thought of everything you would need while away. Here's what the campus offers: 1) Housing: They have nine housing options ranging from luxury cabins (that sleep up to ten and include a private hot tub) to tent camping and everything in between. They have a RV park. They have bunk houses for groups. If you don't want to bring your own tent, they have safari tents already set up or the rustic cabin (it has electricity!). 2) Food: They have a kitchen on site that feeds rafters a lite breakfast (coffee, English muffins, fruit, juice, muffins, etc) and dinner afterwards. We had the steak dinner and I'll be dreaming of the corn on the cob and Texas garlic toast. The Red Dog River Saloon is a large bar serving food and drinks and live music every night! 3) Activities: There is so much to do outside of rafting. They have volleyball, horseshoes, hiking, paint ball, zip lining, ATV tours, paddle boarding. They also partner with other local businesses like the fun escape room in town. On-site they have a large rec room with a library, game area, pool table, and even an old fashioned arcade room! Also on site is a large pool and hot tub. 4) Rafting: They are the only family operated rafting company along the New River and Gauley River. They offer a variety of trips ranging from family fun floating down the river to rafting for beginners up to experts. We did the Upper Gauley River and rafted more than five class 5 rapids. Well, the first thing is that the AC doesn't cool well, which is amusing considering it's supposed to be an outdoorsy type thing, but I was there to meet with family so I had hoped for some comfort. The WiFi is absolutely awful and I had work to get done so it was excruciating. Then I wondered if my concerns were due to me being whiny so I read other reviews and was grossed out at the replies to other Yelpers. I did the Upper Gauley and it was awesome. Rosie was an AWESOME guide, 10 out of 10 would raft with her again. I was able to book the day before, which was nice because I didn't plan to go and did this on a whim...and you can only do this section 7 weeks out of the year. After we floated, we got back and went to the restaurant where the guides and paddlers all met up to watch the video that was put together of the days trip. It really felt like a welcoming community afterwards and the trip was nothing but fun! read more

Where do I begin?! My friend and I stayed at Tiny Adventures (a tiny house in Oakland, MD). We got dressed early in the morning to prepare for our 3hr 15min drive to West Virginia for whitewater rafting by 9am. I swear we drove theeeee longest winding road ever to make it to West Virginia lol. Luckily, some 90s rap and R&B kept us awake along the way (plus some girl talk ). When we arrived at River Expedition, we rushed to check in, rented wetsuits, and locked our belongings in the car. Sadly, we forgot to bring our phones with us for whitewater rafting but we met some friends along the way that took some photos for us. We grabbed our flotation vest, paddle, and helmet and boarded the rafting bus with fellow adventurers. (SN... putting on a wetsuit over curves is a workout ). The one hour bus ride to the Lower Gauley was fun and informative. Our tour guide, Carla, was amazing and funny. She taught us all the dos and don'ts of rafting and included some corny West Virginia jokes along the way (i.e. Why is pumpkin West Virginia's favorite food? Because they can Pump Kin ). Once we arrived, we took some group photos and separated into smaller rafting groups. We were luckily paired with Carla (the littest guide of them all). I can swim a little and Bre can't swim at all, yet we eagerly boarded the raft with smiles lol. The ride started out pretty easy. We talked with our raft mates/guide and really started to wrap our minds around what we signed up for. That's when the fun began . The key to perfecting rafting is to listen and follow directions. We successfully completed several Class IV & Class V rapids thanks to working as a powerful team and following the instructions of our guide. At some points, we were completely covered by the raging rapids but none of us fell in! We were so proud! Half way through, we stopped along the side of the river to have lunch/snacks. The view was absolutely beautiful! We boarded our rafts to continue down the river. Bre was granted an opportunity to "Ride the Bull" on a smaller rapid. She ran to the front of the boat and held onto the rope as if she was riding a mechanical bull. Seconds later she fell backwards into the boat. Her legs were flying in the air as our front captains tried to get her back up during those powerful rapids. We all were dying laughing so hard. It was so much fun! I was so proud of her for volunteering to go upfront. Later we reached a few points that allowed us to jump into the water to swim through some smaller rapids. Both Bre and I declined that option but it was nice to see our raft mates enjoying a swim through the rapids. Our last laugh of the day was focused on me. The guide told us about a trick she could do that would cause the front 2 captains to "kiss and hug". Well the 2 front captains were guys who both came here with their wives . We all laughed but agreed to do the trick (though we know they weren't going to actually kiss). The trick involved purposely crashing onto a boulder that could cause the simulation of a kiss and hug motion between the front 2. Chileeeee I was so into the trick that I forgot the precautions she told us. I was being so nosey in the captains business that I ended up getting thrown forward out of my seat during the trick (partially caught on video). Bruhhhh. I swear we laughed soooooo hard. Everybody on the boat was cracking up. It was so much fun and funny! Bre and I were the life of the boat. So much so that one of the ladies asked for our contact info afterwards lol. Once we finished our rafting trip, we headed back to the bus for some beers, soda, and/or water. We arrived back at our cars, showered onsite, and returned our gear. The entire trip was about 6 hours long. Soooooo much exhilarating fun. We hung around at River Expedition a little longer and talked about our trip with the other passengers. We visited over labor day with the two nights camping and one day on the New River (the more exciting part of the river, cannot remember if that is lower or upper). Dinner was also included in the package which was delicious! The property was nice and clean, camping was great and straightforward. They had firewood for purchase at a reasonable price. The bar they had on property was friendly and had games like pool upstairs. The rafting was awesome! Fantastic company with knowledgeable guides! Cannot say more good things about this company. REVIEW FOR RAFTING ONLY My wife and I tried White Water River Rafting with River Expeditions last weekend and we were so happy we did. We had used a Groupon coupon and we had to reschedule the reservation. The lady on the phone was nice to remind us that we can only reschedule once. We had a 9 am reservation for Full Day Rafting and were asked to arrive 1 hour earlier than that. Everything was very organized and smooth. Everyone who had reservation for the same time (approximately 42-50) were given the necessary equipments and were commuted to the start-point by a bus. Upon reaching there, we were split into groups of 7-10 and were assigned the guide. The rafting experience was good. Despite not knowing swimming, I was comfortable going in the water (thanks to PFDs: Personal Floating Devices), the guides explaining every rapid that's up next, any story behind that, its level (how dangerous it is) and what do to (where to swim to) in case one falls off of the raft. The guides were extremely friendly and nice and kept the conversation going when we were in quiet water for some stretch. There were lots of opportunities to swim in still water (and through a few lower level rapids) We stopped for a lunch break and were given bread, peanut butter, jelly, turkey and ham slices, watermelon, chocolate mousse, chips and water and some break to refresh and be ready for the rest of the journey. Once finished, we were given 2 tokens per person to be used for a glass of beverage (beer or soft-drinks) and the option to see the video/pictures of the full day rafting with the option to buy those. I will definitely recommend River Expeditions for their white water rafting and will probably come back again. read more

We spent a day on the water taking on class 5 rapids, jumping from 25 foot cliffs, floating in the water, eating lunch on the sandbar, ending with two drinks at the bar attached to the establishment (Red Dog Saloon). The cabin was super cute and had pretty much all the amenities. It was all wood and had a gas fire place with a full kitchen and 5 queen sized bedrooms. We had a full wrap around porch and a hot tub, too! However, the at the beginning the hot tub smelled a little fishy, the dishwasher kept coming out of its place under the counter, and there was no laundry place. The woods around the cabins were really pretty, but the nature hike around the property was close to the main road which you could see on several occasions which was a little disappointing if you want a nice place to get away in a wooded area. Overall, I had had a nice time with my friends but I wish the cabin was a little nicer considering we paid for the luxury cabin. I think I would come back though for all of the fun summer activities this place hosts. read more

Celebrating a bachelor party, my friend and I drove nearly 5 hours from Loudoun County, VA to meet everyone here. We camped, rafted, camped again, and had a blast! For the camping, the cabins are equipped with electricity, beds, bathroom, couches, kitchen, and grill. Perfect for groups of people such as the rowdy bunch of males celebrating our friend saying "I do" in a few weeks. The rafting offers several options. We did the upper gauley (the extreme one) and it left me sore and with a slightly sprained ankle; but it was an awesome experience. All the rapids are tier 5 meaning you will get wet and if you're not careful, you will fall out. Some rapids are so powerful, your tube will get tipped over if you're not careful. That happened to us; what a rush! Our guide Liz did a splendid job navigating us and telling us what to do. They also have zip-lining and paintball but most people come for the white water rafting. It's an experience you should try at least once and this is probably the best place to do it. You will be sore and you'll have moments where you might wonder if this was a good idea until you realize afterwards that it definitely was! read more

This campground has beautiful facilities that are very clean and well taken care of. There are several cool activities to do in the area, including white water rafting on the local rivers and gauleys (incredible experiences!). The site staff are all very friendly and helpful, making the stay even more pleasant. The rafting guides are exceptionally kind and knowledgeable, particularly Scott, Carla, and Reed. Hitting up the Red Dog Saloon after rafting was also a blast. Elisha and the bar staff provide fabulous service. Had a really good time on Saturday, Aug 15, 2015 at River Expeditions. It was 3 friends and me, two of us had whitewater experience and the other 2 did not so we opted for a zip line tour in the morning followed by a half day express run down the Lower New River at 2pm. The zip line was fine. I've zip lined in Costa Rica so it's tough to compare to that. Chris and Ashley were our guides and we had a fun time with them. It only takes about 30 min and it was a good way to ease our group into the day because we'd had a long night of catching up over drinks the night before. We selected a 4 man boat for the trip down the Lower New. Tyler was our guide and honestly, he was outstanding!!! Can't say enough good things about Tyler. He knows the river very well, was laid back and seriously funny with our sarcastic crew and he made sure we hit all the big rapids. Not sure how he did it but he got us into a rapid and surfed it for about 5 minutes. We were stoked. The water levels on the New were down so it wasn't huge Class rapids but that's okay because we got out and swam a lot in the flat sections. After we got back, we went over to the Red Dog saloon and had several beers and hung out with Tyler and the other guides as well as the other rafters. The Red Dog is seriously cool and we could have stayed much later but we were camping about 20 miles away and our designated driver was anxious to get back. Overall....I recommend River Expeditions. They have a super nice set up at their facility. They are close to the river so the bus trip to and from was short. The showers, restrooms and all facilities are clean and well maintained. Give these guys a shot. We'll be back. read more

This is our second year rafting river expeditions. This year we ziplined and rafted the lower river. Reed was our guide this year and we also remembered him from last year. The views are simply breathtaking. The river is beyond explanation. Reed made our day a blast guiding us expertly through the best rapids! I took part in one of the Living Social White Water Weekend Getaway packages that were offered in late July. So I am giving my review as a participant in the LS deal: it's your lucky day, you're getting the long version. After making the over four-hour drive from Columbus, my group and I finally reached the camp grounds. The camp grounds were easy to see from the road, although knowing where to park was a little confusing. The checking-in process was easy enough--just make sure if you're part of this deal to ask for the actual River Expedition waiver: the person who checked us in forgot to ask us to sign it and we had to scrambled at the last minute to get it done--literally while we were on the bus to the river... I choose the Rustic Cabin option for my boarding preference. By 'rustic' the outfitters mean two electrical outlets, one window, no lock, small quarters and one fire pit. I was lucky to have really mature roommates, or rustic would have turned into frustrate right quick! Because I had quiet roommates I got a great night's rest both nights I was on the campgrounds. I was protected to the elements and drunken debauchery about a half mile away at the "festive" campgrounds and was able to rest up for what more people need to realize is a physically intense day of rafting! My biggest delight upon staying at the campgrounds is that the bathrooms were functional and clean! Even in the rush times, I never had to wait more than 5 minutes to do my biznaz. Guys, this is really short time in the girl world. The morning of the raft my group and I were extremely disappointed at the continental breakfast...but honestly, I probably should not have expected much. The offerings were English muffins, glazed donuts, apples, bananas and coffee... where's the protein, folks!? Luckily I had brought some of my own food with me, or else I would have been famished the whole river trip. Our group signed up for the Lower New River. You have to check in an hour before your departure--at this point you don't need to be ready to go, you just need to make sure all your paperwork is ready to go and that you're awake for the trip. The second--and final call--is about 20 minutes before your trip. Be ready to go at this point and my advice (as well as the staff's) is to not bring anything with you that you would not want to lose in the water. For attire, I wore dry fit clothing, a dry-fit tank and dry fit capris. You want to wear more than just a bathing suit even if it is warm--you'll get cold when you hit the water and you'll be wishing you had clothes--even wet clothes--to keep insulated. Before boarding the bus we donned helmets, life jackets and grabbed oars. The bus ride to the river was about 25 minutes long by my watch-less, cell phone-less guesstimation. When you get to the River make sure you take one last opportunity to go number one, which you can do in the woods nearby if you're lacking in shame and can run really fast. You figure out who is going to be in your group of nine rafters on the bus. Once you reach the river you and your group will carry your raft down to the river: this is hard work! Once you're in the river you do some practice listening to guide commands. You will be yelled at like you're a soldier and when you make it down the stream safely, maybe even with dry hair you will thank your guide. Our guide was Chaz and he was awesome! Very professional, amicable and concerned with getting us the safest trip possible, which our group appreciated. None of us wanted to be flipped or fall in and he honored our wishes. Rafting was fun, and because the river was calm we were able to do a lot of swimming in our breathtaking surroundings. Lunch was served about 2/3 into the river trip and we had a decent offering. Ladies eat first (wut wut!) and I had a loaded roast beef sandwich with some chili and a cookie. Lunch felt like it was about 40 to 50 minutes. Afterward we got in and did some more rafting and got the chance to go jumping off a 20 foot rock, which was pretty thrilling since you can't see through the water you're leaping into. You end the trip by going through a manageable class V rapid. The day began at 10 and was done at 3. I believe we went though 18 rapids, class 1-5. For reference, you go through over 40 in the Upper or Lower Gauley during Gauley season. After getting back to the camp we were able to watch a video recap of the trip. The video is not worth buying because the resolution quality is pretty poor, but it is fun to watch, root and laugh at your own raft. Afterward, we all got dressed and had dinner while a blue grass band played. I really enjoyed this part and the meal was amazing: bbq chicken, ribs, brownie, cole slaw and a baked potato. Nice to finally have some protein! I highly recommend this facility and plan to go back in the spring. read more

Second time for Memorial Day Madness and camped out! Stayed in the Festive area and our group was so loud that we were told to shut it.....cry babies. The Festive area is for people who're getting drunk and being loud, I guess we exceeded the Festive area's volume levels...smh then make a Rwdy areaTBH! The water level was hella high as it was after all the snow has melted and the true hot weather just begun. So no jumping of rocks into the river, in the later Summer months the water recedes and there is an opportunity to do that. The breakfast is continental at best. Mini donus,muffins, juice,and coffee. Pretty decent considering you can eat breakfast every morning for free. Don't buy a water suit, we had a person in our group get it and by the time we had lunch on the river she was sweating bullets and took it off. The water will be cold but once you start rowing you'll heat up fast. Lunch by the river is neat every guide has a cooler with a lunch component within and they put out a decent spread with cold cuts, PB&J, assorted salads, cookies, and drinks. They let the females eat first lol who says chivarly is dead? Pretty good for groups. The bus to the river is scary as hell so I suggest closing your eyes and listen to the guide tell you the basic safety things or sit in an aisle seat. It's a great place to go I have yet to try the competition for fear of it being wack! It's a great time to be had indeed! Bring your family and friends, BBQ, drink it up and live it up. The rafting was great fun. Guides knowledgeable and attentive. LODGING, however, not so much. We stayed in a cabin with a microwave, grill and refrigerator, but not one utensil in the drawers. All cabinets empty. When I tried to tell the manager, she said, yup, no utensils! Would've been nice to know in advance. "Restaurant" is more of a saloon with inattentive staff. All in all, rafting was great but we'll probably find different lodging next time read more

Great rafting experience. We bought a 2 days, 3 nights package through The Capital Deal, and had tons of fun. The drive from DC was about 6 hours, with a couple of stops on the way. River Expedition's campsite's check-in is open 24/hrs, so that was very helpful for us since we arrived at night. The check-in also sells anything from firewood to folding chairs, and is also open 24/hrs. The staff was friendly, and we were shown to different areas we can camp in. There was a rain forecast for our second night, so we reserved a platform tent, which are larger tents that stand on small decks throughout the campground. Each deck has a roof, so we slept there through the storm without a drop coming in. These also come with several foam mattresses, so it's very comfortable. The raft boat guides were very experienced, knew every turn and rapid in the river. Before approaching larger rapids we would get a preview that sounded like: "we will start on the left between (bolder description here) and (bolder description here). we will go in an S shaped route through the rapid, passing very close to (bolder description here)...". And then things would happen exactly as described. Very professional. My wife, who is allergic to bees, got stung by a bee. She had an Epipen with her, which our guide kept in a dry box on the raft. She's never had to use it before. Our raft guide, and another trained rescue professional who led another raft, quickly got together and very calmly and professionally walked us through everything. The whole incident was over in 20 minutes, and we continued on since we already have been through the more serious rapids of the day. Only negative thing was that there's only one facility with showers / restrooms that's available at night for the campground (which by the way is kept very clean). So if you camp too far it's a hike to use the restroom in the middle of the night. read more

This is camping the only way I know how to camp -- with bedrooms, AC, electricity, and a medium-sized kitchen. We got the luxury cabin, which fit all 10 of us comfortably. If this was college again, we could have easily fit 10 more people in sleeping bags throughout the house. I was surprised with how clean and tidy the cabin was. The kitchen was semi-stocked with utensils, bowls, and cups. We had to bring our own necessities like soap, paper towels, and trash bags, but that's fine. There are some grocery stores near by that you can go get any forgotten items. The camp grounds was pretty neat and laid out pretty nicely too. There were parts for the hardcore campers to pitch their tents, build fires and that sorta stuff, and a row of luxury cabin in the back for us city-slickers. Some of us went whitewater rafting, others went hiking the trails, and there are other activities available. It's definitely a great weekend trip to take since each event takes a whole day to do. Best trail is the Kaymoor Miners Trail. You decent 1/2 a mile of stairs. We took it even further and continued going down until we hit the water. You'll get to see rafters float by at that point, and take some cool photos. There's also a ziplining trail back at the campsite that you can do. Advice is to bring lots of water and food. You're going to be burning tons of calories so don't even think twice about having seconds and thirds at dinner. If we didn't rent the luxury cabin, I might not be as happy using the public restrooms and showers. read more

This is a review of the ziplining only.... I paid $200 for 3 of us for the ziplining. This consists of about 6 cables you zip across, one small bridge, one cable that lowers you to the ground at the end and that is ALL! We expected more of an obstacle-type arial park with many more zip lines. We've zip lined many times before, so it only lasted about 30 minutes for us at the most, and we all looked at each other at the end like, "is that IT?" The guides are awesome and professional, we just wish we would have known that this was a super small course. read more

Great facilities, and we secured an excellent campsite. Water was not close by, so that was a downside. Not completely unmanageable, just inconvenient. Staff was great for the most part. Now, I get to the real reason I would never use this outfitter again: our rafting guide was a total d-bag. He had it out for me from the beginning, and I don't know why. Even my friends were baffled. That would be Devin. That dude is severely insecure. He loved hearing himself talk, and told the dumbest jokes ever - when he wasn't yelling at me for some random stupid shit. I struggled to not let it ruin my trip. I wanted to put him in his place, but I decided not to make it uncomfortable for the others in the raft. I had no idea I was paying for a day of being berated. At the end of the trip, he got super nice. Working the tip, obviously (I gave him nothing, nor did my friends). What a jackass. John, on the other hand, great guy and very accommodating. DO NOT SCHEDULE ONLINE. I scheduled a float for May 17th, 2021. I was called on May 11th. and told our float was canceled as there weren't enough people floating. I was told they would try to add people to our float and would call if that was the case. I told them we were in town for a wedding and would need to know in the next day or two. I never got a call till mid morning on the 17th. The call came in while I was heading home on a plane. They kept my $211.14 and the owner refuses to call me. Fn thieves. Sincerely, William read more

Our experience here overall was great. The staff was very nice and very attentive to our special needs/requests. We all had a great time and managed to stay afloat and not flip. However, our guide needs to work on being more approachable and keeping certain comments to themselves. Some comments made were not appropriate and made our experience not as good as it could have been. read more

Hubby and I came here for a day of white water rafting on the lower New River. It was amazing. It was our first time rafting and the crew was amazing from beginning to end. TJ was our guide and we couldn't have asked for a better one. He was funny, helpful and guided you on everything you needed to do to stay on the raft and not go "swimming". The other members of the crew were very friendly too. TJ and others were very knowledgeable of the area, and after the rafting trip was over, I felt like I learned a lot about the people that used to live on the river during the major coal mining days and the history of the area in general. This trip was a blast and if we ever come back to do it again, it will be with River Expeditions...and hopefully TJ will be our guide again! read more

Great experience with the Upper New River for our family of 4 in early August. We had two 40-something parents, a 13 year old and 8 year old. We did the same stretch of river 2 days and had great experiences both times. The guides Sophie, Dawn and John were particularly kind, patient and funny. The campground was also very nice. Spaces were generous and private with great showerhouses very nearby. Definitely would recommend again! read more

Overall I had a good experience. However, my negative interaction or experience overshadows. I had a GC from a basket in silent auction that included day whitewater rafting, 2 night tent camping, continental breakfast, lunch for 2. We added on Evening Climb/Rappel and zipline. Considering the weather, we upgraded to RV for about $32 more. We stayed 8/21/19-8/23/19. The reservation process w/ Brandon and Charlotte was good. Angie was welcoming at the welcome center. Guides Porter and Lauren were patient and seemed experienced. Lewis, the bus driver was nice to talk to before boarding. Amenities close early or can have unpredictable hours during non-peak times. My friend looked forward to the hot tub after rock climbing/rappelling. We were surprised there were no shower facilities to rinse around pool area. At check-in, we were told and understood it would be open 10am-10pm. It was around 9:30pm. The hot tub was only partially covered. My friend decided to hop into the uncovered part and stated she assumed they were conserving energy or something. I was talking to another guest after my friend had left the area when I was questioned by someone. Did I think it was a good idea to uncover the hot tub? I asked, "Are you staff?" He replied, he was the owner. I think he asked where the little girl in the yellow bikini was. He seemed upset. I apologized . He stated there was no misunderstanding or miscommunication. He stated he had to come from his residence to deal with it. He used a poor analogy of going to his residence and raiding the fridge. He stated he could kick us out for this. I felt ashamed, guilty, and wanted to cry. At most, I was guilty of putting my feet in the water and being with my friend. I suggest signage stating "closed early, do not enter" making it crystal clear. The campsites especially the RV sites are close together. The trail signs lead to confusion.
