During my one-day travel in Cambridge (a really nice get away from London !) I knew I would have to try a burger place, and Smokeworks seemed to have all I was waiting for. First, the place is really nice and embrace the "American dinner vibe" with wood table and big neon signs. And there is a button to turn when you're ready to order : it put a light on a board, with your table number, so that the waitress knows you want to order... Genius ! About the food menu : you can choose from ribs, burgers or mains, but keep it mind it's mostly about meat, smoked meat and bbq food. I thought it was important to say that, since I read bad reviews about the fact Smokeworks only offer BBQ style food : well, it's in the name of the restaurant, what did you expect ? I decided to have the lamb burger, with slow cooked lamb, feta, rocket and pomegranate. I chose 2 minors side, fries and apple-walnut salad. I like the fact that you can choose a big side or two small ones ! The fries were perfect, so crunchy. The salad was good, but expect A LOT of walnuts. It was like a walnut salad ^^ And the burger... The burger... One of the best burger I had in weeks !! Except for the bun, which was average and squishy, the burger was so yummy and tasty !!! There are generous with the lamb and feta cheese, and the combination of these two flavours works so well. You also have to check their homemade sauces : the BBQ is pretty good and the hot one is really spicy (and it comes from someone who can handle the heat) I wanted to give this place 4 stars because of the bun, but I think they deserve more stars just to improve their grade after the not deserved bad reviews... So 5 stars it is ! (I should say I went to Smokeworks for lunch, on a week day, so it wasn't crowded at all. Be more careful during the weekend !)

Smokeworks is a rather unassuming restaurant, tucked away from the main bars and split across two small but well set-out levels. After a few pints at the Cambridge Brew House, we were more than ready for a meaty feast and were glad of a short 15 minute wait before the table was ready. The most unique aspect of Smokeworks is the 'service board' - when you're ready to order, you flick the red switch and your table's bulb lights up on the board (not unlike something from Wallace & Gromit) and someone then comes over. It's a fun addition though I personally wasn't a fan of feeling like I was calling someone over, like they should be at my beck and call. The menu is simple and The Works / Beef it Up are probably of the two more exciting plates available; after all, aren't large sharing platters of meat what BBQ is all about? As it was lunchtime, we decided better of it and ordered some buns and sides. My pulled pork bun was good, with a solid bun - it's a positive - meaning nothing fell apart while eating. There was a hint of smoke in the background but I topped the sandwich off with some of the house hot sauce to add more of a kick. We shared some chicken wings with what I think was jalapeno sauce and some mac & cheese fritters (can't help ordering the novelty item), and I had a side of meaty BBQ beans. The latter were much spicier than expected, but in a totally lovely way! Service was friendly throughout though I personally wasn't a fan of being the one given a bib "in case you get messy", presumably because I'm female. It's a funny comment if everyone on the table gets one but otherwise you're just making assumptions...I put them right in the end by being the only one of us not to drop sauce anywhere. A good option if you're in the area and fancy something different but I don't think I'll be making regular return visits.

    Meal for two

Staff is so friendly, atmosphere is great but a bit loud. Cool look. Now for the food, it was not so good. We had the meal for two, ribs, smoked brisket, onion ring, coleslaw, chicken wings, corn and sausage. The meat tasted like fake liquid smoke, to the point I couldn't eat it. Corn was flavorless and greasy, coleslaw was good, onion rings were on point. I wanted to like it so bad, I'm a rib fanatic and it just tasted so fake, meat didn't fall off the bone. Food was served NOT hot. Too artificial tasting, had a stomach ache immediately from the nasty liquid smoke taste.

    Combo plate.

Fantastic surprise. As an American I didn't set my expectations high going in, but it turned out to be amazing. I highly recommend!

Great little place, more seating downstairs. Great service including a light switch to call the server . Ordered the baby back ribs and sweet potato fries with a side of mash. Very tender rubs, great sauce with sides of sauce. Mash and fries great!

    Great place and great staff!

Solid, decent BBQ food. Would recommend. Portion sizes leave a little to be desired, hence only 4/5 but otherwise delicious.

Pretty mediocre- certainly not authentic BBQ. Avoid the pulled chicken bun- miserly filling and no smoke to detect. Disappointed

This is real American BBQ. Not Memphis, or KC but a good overall interpretation. They even have root beer floats.

A…read morefantastic atmosphere with its ultra comfortable leather booth seats, skylight bringing in natural sunlight, even plug sockets for laptop users and free wifi. It also seems the place to watch live sports over a drink and a burger with tv screens on each corner of the restaurant yet it is still very family friendly and service has always been impeccable. In my honest opinion I do believe they serve some of the best American dishes around and can even compete with some of London's favourite diners. Wild wings (cajun) x6 Incredibly moreish and can see myself finishing a higher quantity bucket load. The wing sizes were quite average but very succulent and meaty inside. The cajun spices gave it a nice sweet paprika garlicky flavour and latched on well on the crispy skins of the wing showing that they were well fried, Sloppy Joes Ticked all the boxes for a fantastic burger. First that lovely pillow soft brioche bun, slightly charred so it came warm. Then came the rich tender minced beef fried with onions and peppers in there to give it some texture and boost of flavour. The sauce it came with was generous, with lovely rich sweet and and savoury notes keeping everything moist and juicy throughout. Finished off nicely with a fine slice of cheese, melted perfectly to intensify the umami flavours. Full rack ribs A delicious slab of ribs, keeping its meaty texture and flavours which suggest it was slow cooked the full length of time to tenderise and soften the meat. There was no pre cooking the ribs beforehand here. This allowed the rich BBQ coca cola sauce to penetrate through to the bone whilst reducing in liquid to create a rich and sticky coating around the ribs keeping everythign moist and juicy. A nice light creamy coleslaw on the side to cool things off. Curly fries These were perfectly fried. It had that moreish fluffy inside and crispy outside that was coated in the sweet mild spices which you find collapsing on itself as you chew, sending the rush of flavour through each mouthful. I say mouthful as who just pops one in their mouth per bite, not if they are this good. Chilli fries Not the spicy chilli as I imagined but chilli consisting of a wonderful well flavoured mix of red kidney beans, onions and red peppers in a lovely thick tomato slurry that helped bind the sauce and flavours on each and every chip. Drizzled with sour cream to add a lovely creamy consistency. Very wholesome dish. Sloppy suits every occassion whether it's your quick lunch or a celebration feast. Food has always been fantastic and paired with that is it's lovely bright and spacious atmosphere. Those who can eat a lot like me should definitely go for one of their food challenges. try their Sloppy Joes challenge and knock me down the top of the chart if you can.

I wanted something with at least one good veggie option, they wanted something with meat, and it had to be somewhere in-between Camden and Canary Wharf, not too pricey, and ideally close to the city because otherwise our Italian friend probably wouldn't make it. And lo and behold.... THE FAT BEAR!!! It was all we wanted and more! This place is sort of tucked away and up some stairs above a pub. It's really just a room and a half, which makes it super cozy and they have a pretty awesome looking bar. It's got warm lighting which makes the atmosphere really nice. Their cocktails were delightful and the service was excellent. I will make a very strange observation that someone working there had a very drunk friend who just sort of made herself at home. Then more joined and it turned into me watching this table of really really drunk people trying to order food. Two of them ended up just falling asleep. It was super strange. Anyway, me being distracted aside, I really loved the cocktail I ordered- Sloe Boat To China, and everyone else seemed happy with theirs. I was dying to try the pimiento cheese starter and the fried pickles. The cheese was particularly sharp and delicious. The pickles were good, but quite skinny (I mean come on, you're in an American restaurant I was expecting some serious pickles). The vegan gumbo was super spicy and delicious. I was impressed and enjoyed it. My husband dropped the ball and ordered the regular jambalaya (with sausage) rather than the seafood one which broke my heart a little bit, because I really wanted to try it. You know, I guess that means we'll just have to come back. Oh also another bonus, this place has brisket which is really hard to find. I can't say how it tastes but my friend said he defo approves (am I becoming more British with these words, or just more annoying?) Anyway, to finish it off I had the oreo cheesecake which the bomb. I love oreos. And it tasted like oreo. So all was right with the world. A wonderful place to come if you have people who want to try American food, or if you have out of town Americans who are too scared to try other food, or if you have hungry friends that want to try cajun food, or if you just want to try some really yummy food.

This restaurant on Newmarket Road is fairly new. The space is clean and interior is reminiscent of the booth seating in the U.S. If you look up, there are two bronze statues of whom I assume are Frankie and Benny watching over. Because I was staying somewhere nearby, I ate here twice in one day; for both breakfast and dinner. The value of breakfast is really good. Different plates were offered for relatively affordable prices £3.95-£6.95 e.g. full English breakfast, pancakes, Eggs Benedict. The three I mentioned are the plates we ordered (all were only £5 each). On the Eggs Benedict, you have a choice of meat. I would recommend the bacon! The dishes were decent, but I would skip the pancakes. The Sunrise cocktail I had was a nice pairing. Service wasn't the best, and it wasn't busy. We came back later that evening for dinner, and it was much busier. We had to wait a little before a table was ready, so we went to the bar and ordered drinks. When seated, I observed that a number of the larger round booths were empty because they weren't being cleaned. Dirty dishes sat untouched the whole time we dined. I wondered why they didn't want to seat people there. As for our food, we started with the Mac N Cheese (just penne pasta and cheese), which actually came out after our mains were served. We got the chicken wrap (good) and the massive calzone (okay but drenched in marinara sauce). For dessert we shared the strawberry shortcake sundae--that was the best tasting thing that day. My dining companion felt that the service was better, I didn't notice a difference. If you're looking for a place to dine with others, Frankie & Benny's is a good place in a central location. The parking shouldn't be an issue. If you want authentic American style food, I suppose it's close enough. Personally, I would recommend getting breakfast rather than lunch or dinner here, because of the great value.
