Actually I have to update my review to 4 stars. While they were very quick and efficient once they arrived, they were over an hour late and I was nervous that I wasn't going to be able to complete my move in time. I needn't have worried as they got everything done with time to spare, however I would have appreciated a heads up. I had to make two last minute moves when I relocated for work last year and Smooth Moves was incredible for both my local and long distance move. Their packing and move-out cleaning services saved my skin when I had to make a last-minute move and I was very impressed with the care the movers used in handling furniture and my fragile items. My previous move completed with a DIFFERENT local company was anything but smooth so this was a very welcome change. While I'm no longer in Charlottesville, I fully intend to use their services when I eventually return. read more

I'm extremely disappointed in how Smooth Moves Cville is handling our broken TV situation in which their workers insisted on moving our TV (probably because my partner is pregnant and the smaller mover has "8 kids and expecting more"), broke the TV and acknowledged they broke it but get back to the office and blame us. The office people had the nerve to tell me "the movers don't always know the policy" then why let someone represent your company make false promises IF THEY DON'T KNOW NOTHING. This is on top of being an hour late to the house we moved from, taking at least 3 breaks, and taking several pictures while inside our home for who knows what. Update: Rachel also likes to post as the company on facebook with the same lies as they continue to make. As I expressed there others should be concerned with going with a company that is not trustworthy or honest especially when it involves entering your personal space. Best to avoid. They may be the cheapest but you're definitely get the same customer service as the saying goes "you get what you pay for." Moving is one of the most stressful experiences in a person's life. Do not work with this company as they will compound and intensify the stress you are experiencing in relation to your move. The company was very disorganized and unable to complete my move even though it was only a distance of about half a mile and I provided an exhaustive itemized list of things to be moved prior to moving day. The movers were unprofessional in their interactions with me and my property, which sustained damage at their careless hands. Aside from the move itself, the company staff members are rude and abusive. I must conclude the behavior is driven by some sort of desperate financial situation as I struggle to think of any other justification for the vicious way in which they handled my invoice and collection of my bill. I was personally attacked, slanderous accusations were made against me, and threats were leveled on a totally unnecessary scale. At its worst, the staff members' excessively aggressive behavior frightened me. It made me feel like I was dealing with predators. I am reviewing this company with the sole intention of sparing others from making the mistake of hiring this business for a move. Some company representative will probably reply to this review in an effort to discredit me but I hope others see such replies evidence the poor customer service skills, bad business sense, and general lack of respect for other people that brought me here in the first place. read more

What a disappointing experience with this company. I used them previously and it had been great so I decided to do it again. This was a mistake as the movers made changes to where they were going without alerting me and disappeared for an hour (that I was charged) between houses. I contacted Smooth Moves and had the extreme displeasure of speaking with Rae. She was condescending, gaslit me, and accused me of changing my story when in reality, it was her movers who changed theirs. She kept trying to make it seem like I had an issue with the small breaks the movers took when in reality, my struggle was with them leaving my first home around 11 AM (very close to it if not on the dot) and then not arriving in Lynchburg until almost 1:30 PM. Lynchburg was just an hour and some change from my previous home. Rae attempted to explain this disappearance using the following: 1) accusing me of adding an extra stop (I did not and she backtracked very quickly when I asked she provide info on where I asked her movers to go and what I asked them to get) 2) traffic (the other 3 vehicles driving down that day arrived in Lynchburg within the expected timeframe with no traffic) 3) a lunch break even though she also kept saying they ate in the truck on the way to the final location 4) me lying about times and allegedly changing my story I asked Rae twice if she could provide the itinerary that her movers allegedly provided to her so that if I was in the wrong, I would know why. She has completely ignored these requests and got very defensive when I told her that her charges were fraudulent and I was looking into a chargeback. My favorite part of the interaction was her insistence that her good reviews on the internet proved how great they were so obviously my concerns meant nothing. At this time, Rae is no longer responding to follow up messages and I haven't heard from her in a week after asking if we could take a break from the exchange last Friday because I was getting angrier and it was counterproductive. I initially approached the entire thing trying to understand exactly how charges were calculated but once Rae began talking down to me, I'd had it. I would never recommend this company to someone. Ever. I'm thrilled to have a response from Rae who is lying even more and has now had her company's FB page removed due to all the negative reviews by not only myself but several others. To begin with, I signed nothing at the end of the move so unless they had me sign something before they left my home in Charlottesville, we have more lies. I was not at the home in Lynchburg as I was cleaning the house in Charlottesville so someone who was helping me would have had to have signed off. He does not recall signing anything and I can assure you he did not tip the movers either as I had inquired with one of them whether I was able to do so on the card. I opted not to after I saw what I was charged and after they had lied about where they were. When my bill became a week overdue? You had a card on file for me which you charged without letting me know the charges beforehand. I moved the 18th of July and the card was charged the 22nd of July so please tell me how I was late? A call was never made to me about payment as I would have asked questions before paying had I known the total. The discount that I was 'offered' was the returning customer discount which was already in place before this mess started. I've posted the screenshots from the ENTIRE email thread. UPDATE (to review of Customer Service): I heard back from the Customer Service department. They were very receptive to our concerns, refunded the extra one-half hour for which we were billed and explained that one of the movers had already been let go due to poor performance. They also offered us a discount on future moving services. I was told that they are working on merging and that the owners were on vacation, which was why I had not heard back from the Customer Service team. I can understand the Customer Service delay and do appreciate them working with me, which is why my update focuses on Customer Service and bumps up to three stars. read more

Moving is hard - but the Smooth Move Movers took away a lot of the stress and worry. They were cheerful, they were efficient, they were careful, and they put all of our stuff where we wanted it in the new house with not a scratch on a wall or a piece of furniture. The crew made called to state they would be there by 10-10:30am and never showed up. We were never given an alternate number to call like the say they give. DO NOT HIRE SMOOTH MOVES. Absolutely fraudulent company. I am so disappointed because I booked this company based off the good reviews. I was quoted $215 flat rate for the first two hours of the move (with the condition that any additional time would be $95 an hour, billed on the half hour). I had everything packed, disassembled and ready to go for the movers when they got there, all they had to do was move the things to the truck. The movers arrived at 10:00am and left right around 12:00pm. I remember telling myself that everything was right on time and super happy that I was only going to be charged for the two hours. WRONG. When I got the bill two days later I was charged $285 (plus a $25 deposit) for a total of $310 with the extra charge being an additional hour. I called the merchant thinking there had to be some kind of mistake and they were no help. They actually were very rude and argued with me the entire time. Their explanation being that the movers had 'clocked out' at 12:21pm and that is why I was charged the extra amount. I know for a fact that the movers were gone before 12:12pm because that is when I left with the moving truck. Before leaving I spent 10-15 minutes tidying up the apartment and locking up. Therefore the movers left right after (I mean minutes) or right at 12:00pm. I also have a screenshot showing my location in the moving truck on highway 64 when the movers supposedly 'clocked' out at 12:21pm. Regardless, I still should not have been charged the extra hour. The merchant agreed to credit back 1/2 of the charge but REFUSED to give back the whole additional hour charge. Even though I have proof that their "clock out" system is fraudulent and they have no proof that they left after 12:00pm. Also when I asked the merchant what happens if the movers leave one minute over the two hour mark they responded that you get charged the whole extra half hour. I know moving is difficult but this is just bad business. The move itself went well and the movers did a good job with my stuff. I gave them a good tip and then was charged extra with absolutely no proof from the merchant. Very very disappointing. I would give zero stars if that was possible. read more

The guys who showed up were nice and seemed to understand how to move furniture. Unfortunately, on the delivery end a bin of valuable items disappeared. We saw it when it arrived in the parking lot but then had to go up to the apartment to receive the stuff and tell the guys where to put it. Somehow our bin of silverware and kitchen items disappeared and we are now out several thousand dollars worth of stuff that we need to replace. The company simply says they are not liable. read more

We just finished a complicated move from Charlottesville to Wilmington with interim storage for half of our worldly goods. Rachel was fantastic in working our way through possible scenarios and finding us the optimal path. The moving team was super polite, courteous, efficient and good natured despite the heat and humidity. We handled the inevitable last minute hiccups with calm and grace. I hired Smooth Moves to load a truck that I would drive myself. They sent two loaders and they did a great job. They loaded everything efficiently and quickly and packed the truck perfectly. We hired smooth moves at the recommendation of our son who had had a good experience last year. They were absolutely great. Rachel helped determine how many movers and what truck we would need. Our movers, Justin, Doug, and Ted, were wonderful. They were courteous, conscientious, efficient, and friendly. They were careful with our furniture and did everything we requested. It took a little longer than we expected, but that was only because we asked them to do a few extra things and Rachel had been clear about how much an extra hour of their time would cost. My husband and I have always moved our own things in the past, but it was so nice to have Smooth Moves help this time. I set up a time and for Rachel to come and look at what we had to move. The day of meeting she never showed up or called . I called her and left messages but nothing. I attempted for about a week to get ahold of her because I heard it was a good company but as I found out commnication sucks. I had to find another moving service to load my uhaul truck. I was very disappointed with Rachel from the Smooth Moves team. She badly misjudged how much furniture we would be moving to our new house. Rather than ordering two trucks she suggested we rent just one. This led to the crew needing a second day to complete the move. And that doesn't even include the 7 trips I made personally with my own vehicle. In the end, rather than admitting her mistake, she doubled down and proceeded to rationalize her mistake. Brendan and Grady were wonderful. They were so fast but so careful with my things. Nothing arrived broken and they even put things in the right rooms and arranged my furniture how I wanted it. I am generally not one to post negative things about a company on line, as I understand sometimes someone may have a bad day, but this one has left me dazed and confused. If I could have left zero stars, I would have. I called several movers late last week to find out when I could get someone to come and move some heavy items for me from my house in Fluvanna County to a location about an hour away. I decided to go with Smooth Moves as they had someone available today to do the move. We had originally discussed doing it next Saturday but I decided that I would go ahead and take today off to get it done. I have been trying to get these items moved for a month now, since I have a broken ankle and have been unable to do them myself, and my husband recently passed away, so I REALLY needed someone's help. I called and spoke to the lady who answered the phone and told her that I wanted to go ahead and have them do it today and asked what time they would arrive. Her reply was that they started at 9am. She gave me a price and I told her I would see them Monday morning (today). She asked me to send an email with the address where the items were being picked up, and also the address where they were to be delivered, which I did later that afternoon. I was there at the house (I had to drive an hour to get there) by 8:30am and waited, and waited...and waited. I called several times and got a voice mail saying that they were booked up through July 8th (today is August 29) and to leave a message and they would call back. I left one at 9:15am because I thought the movers may have been lost since the house was out in the county. Then I called again at 10am, then again around 10:30, getting the same voice mail every time. I had also sent an email on Friday (I copied the address off of the website, so it should have been correct) and again one this morning (same) giving driving directions to the house with my cell number on it (which I had already given when I booked them, so there was no reason they could not contact me if there was an issue). It is now 2:43pm and I have not heard a word from them. I am glad that the three other reviewers had great experiences but I, however, did not. I should have realized when the lady answered the phone to crying children in the background and a with a somewhat sarcastic tone that maybe I should call someone else, as this was apparently a small home based business (I don't know this, just the feeling I got from her) and I should have gone with someone who was more reputable. I wasted a day off from work, had to reschedule an important doctor's visit, and after I realized they were going to be a no-show had an extremely rough morning, as I thought this was one item that I could check off of my to do list. Lesson learned. I recommend calling a reputable professional if you need a mover in Charlottesville, as this one left me high and dry. read more
