When it comes to skin care and cosmetics, I still think Japanese products take the cake. But they are not always accessible and affordable, so I scout around for good local alternatives. Yes, Pinoy-made. Why? Well, the most accessible American brands tend to make my generally good skin misbehave. Maybe due to the different weather conditions? When it comes to cosmetics naman, local brands are better with shade matching. My skin is Light Medium Olive -- not an easy match. I get better options from local brands. Some are pretty good, but so far my personal favorite has been a brand called Snoe Beauty. The first time I bought one of their products was around 3 years ago, and it was because the packaging caught my eye. They had fun, witty names like "Awesome Poresome" (a product line made for large pores) and Here Comes the Sunblock. They did not come cheap, especially for a local product, and I soon came to realize why -- they were good, quality products with high quality, often imported (Japanese!) ingredients. There were a few misses, maybe not compatible with my skin, but most were hits.
So when my sister and i walked past their little shelf in Landmark and I saw that they had new products in store, i didn't think twice and scooped them up (with just a twinge of guilt -- hey, you're supposed to invest in good skin care right?)
First, Stink Positive. With a name like that, how can you possibly ignore it? Well done, Snoe -- that made me pick the stuff right up. One is a bar soap -- or, as the pack states, an Empowering Beauty Bar that promises anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. I think those make sure that no matter how sweaty you get in this crazy hot weather, you're not going to stink. Because i've been sweating buckets lately, I tried it. It works! I feel fresh even after being out for a few hours in this heat. The soap is lightly scented, but a little drying -- you may want to follow this up with a good moisturizer. The soap also claims to enhance radiance, but i've only been using it for about a week so i'll have to get back to you on that. The line also includes the Stink Positive Instant Shower Spray. It's basically an odor-eliminator -- think coming-out-of-pepper-lunch useful. I let a smoker friend try it for a day and she was super happy with it. I kept it for myself though because it was so refreshing to spray on at random moments in the day. I guess that's why they called it a cold shower spray.
I also saw that one of my old favorites looked like it got an upgrade, so I got it, too. The It's Oat K It's All Right Beauty Bar is made of -- yup -- Oatmeal, which is know to be really good for soothing the skin, but it also has Goat's Milk which is a great moisturizer, and acerola cherry. I see that a lot in their products -- it's a skin brightening thing, which is great for me. I hate tired-looking skin, sometimes we need a boost. This one definitely works in that department. It also has actual oats for exfoliation, so i'm loving the scrubby feel.
The other thing i've always liked about Snoe is that they make awesome hair products. Their hair line is called Hair Heroes, and they've got a lot of stuff in that range -- shampoos, cleansing conditioners, dry shampoo, styling products -- that are just awesome. The newest one is called Spectrum, which went straight into my bag because 1) i love the retro appeal of the little jar, and 2) it had coffee listed as a primary ingredient. It's primarily made for those who color their hair. It says you can use it as a pre-shampoo treatment, a post-shampoo conditioner, a color masque, and -- get this -- a full-body hydrating wrap! WHAT! I'll get to that eventually but so far i've used it as a pre-shampoo treatment and it made my hair really soft, even if I don't use conditioner afterwards. It could be a little less scented (the scent stayed on even after i shampoo'd with a scented one) but if you don't mind strong scents, you will love this one.
The last thing I picked up is the best of this lot. I've always been too lazy to be diligent about sunscreen use, so now i'm paying for it as the sun spots have started to show up on my face. Now i'm forever on a quest to find the best sunscreen that can also double as a moisturizer, and, on days when i have to wear a bit of make up, serve as a good base. Defense Mechanism is a water-based day gel that offers SPF 50++! Yes! It felt really, really good on the skin and was absorbed pretty well -- it made my skin look great even without any make up. So this is one definitely staying in my kit. Bonus -- it has tea tree, so when a zit or two shows up, this could help.
If you made it to the end of this, you can probably tell how much i like my new Snoe haul. Pick something up the next time you pass one of their stores. You just might like it as much as i do.
PS. They make great lippies. Try Vintage Rose. It's super flattering on almost everyone I've given it to.:-) read more
