There were also some tables set up with information about the Indianapolis Public Library, as well as information about WIC. There was one booth that I saw that was offering hot food for sale, but there might have been two. Then there was an ice cream truck parked at the back. It took us a literal minute to walk the entirety of the farmers market -- that's how small it was. I really hope it revs up as the season progresses! It would be nice to see more produce available, especially because this area is such a food desert. This farmers market is open on the first and third Thursdays of the month, from 4-6:30 p.m. Parking can be limited around here, but you can park at the North United Methodist Church parking lot or try to snag a parking spot near the park.

We arrived ten minutes before opening to find a line of about 200 people waiting to enter. These people are serious shoppers that come equipped with carts, wagons and armfuls of bags. Seventy or so vendors are organized by produce, crafts, baked goods and prepared foods. Long lines of shoppers form quickly outside popular produce vendors, making it difficult to shop. The regulars know exactly where they want to go. If you see something you want, you need to buy it quickly or it's gone. The produce was locally grown and beautiful in most booths. Prices were high, in general, but shoppers were not deterred. I picked up some beautiful and reasonably priced eggplant. But I draw the line at $6 pints of cherry tomatoes. Several vendors were selling fresh baked goods. Bakeries from around central Indiana were present. I saw breads, muffins, cookies and more. I was intrigued by sourdough bread and bought a loaf. Music plays at a central location. Tables and chairs fill up quickly with coffee drinkers and people sampling the various food selections. We had trouble finding a seat to eat my breakfast pizza. People had dogs on leashes, lots of dogs. Personally, I prefer not to have dogs at the markets because they stick their noses in the food. Don't get me wrong, I'm a dog lover, but I leave mine at home. Parking fills quickly and we found backing out of our space to exit a challenge as cars kept coming. Some people park over in the mall parking and walk, which might be easier. I did not see rest rooms or other amenities. I think it's probably easier to shop after you have been a few times to the market and know exactly what you want. Bring a hand cart.

Due to construction that's why it's moved to the circle. I noticed today they've added more food trucks which they did need. They definitely could add more. You have lots of visitors and people who work downtown who attend lots of functions that happen on the circle. Flying Dirt Farm, Hunter's Honey Farm, Chez Pauline are ones I always stop at. They have vegetables, flowers, soaps, and more. It seems like when it first started in May it wasn't as busy. Now, you can tell it's picked up. Good for the vendors! Because of you meet all those requirements, you can visit Indianapolis' Original Farmers' Market and have a terrific time. Market Street is closed to vehicular traffic during the Farmers Market, so it gets transformed into a pedestrian mall. There must have been 50 vendors on both sides of the street. And what might those vendors sell? Probably every type of fruit and vegetable grown in the state of Indiana, plus spices, ciders, baked goods, oils, vinegars, eggs, meats, granola, wine, flowers, beef jerky, coffees, guacamole, salsa, tostadas, soap, cosmetics, honey, popcorn, lemonade, bakery goodies, egg rolls, pet foods, teas, coffee, and cocktail mixes. It's a gorgeous sensory overload of reds and oranges and yellows and greens as you see stall after stall of amazing looking produce. I got two tomatoes and cherry tomatoes for 10 bucks almost. Ridiculous they have now switched over to being all kinds of canned or bottled products and also flowers so I guess that's where their budget goes. As I was looking around every time, I walked by the counter, one of the cashiers was laying across the counter. Interesting. I think the flowers look really good, but the price seemed very high. It's a lovely market. It's very simple the layout basically one big circle. I wish I could find the name of the lady that had a table FULL of vases of flowers. They were stunning!!! She's not only a good floral designer, but I can't imagine what her flower gardens look like. She filled them full with flowers. Rock of Etches has sand engraved pottery. Had to buy my dad a Hoosiers mug. They had Pacers, Purdue, I U mugs. They had other neat pieces of pottery too. They had so many different small businesses there. I understand the parking and space is much easier/plentiful here but the partnership with City Market seemed like such a smart and natural fit. Plus, I loved strolling from one section of the market to the next to gather breakfast and eats for the week. The new location offers many of the vendors you've seen in the past - Duos, Bee Coffee, Amelia's, Wildflower Honey and so on. Parking is free and located across the street and you won't have a hard time finding a spot. My biggest hang up at this location is the dark/warehouse feel that seems to be a big contrast to the light and flow found at City Market.

Most weeks all the vendors are there but sometimes it can be slow. Usually there are 4-6 booths with greens and veggies, 2 apple orchards, 1-2 Kombucha vendors, 2-3 bakeries, and an assortment of others from essential oils, pickling snacks, mustard, salt dressing, honey and coffee. All local businesses and all wonderful people. There is usually live music playing, prepared food vendors and a few tables to sit at. Note - You can't bring your pets to this one since it is inside and the isles can get crowded so if you have small children it is best to carry them or have them in a stroller.

As for market vendors, you'll find everything from pasta and local cheese to winter produce, honey and dried flowers. It's a great assortment of food you can actually take home to make meals (and not just sauces and soaps ;). This is one of our favorite ways to spend Saturday mornings in the winter. The Amp - even tho it is not by anything - has the audacity to have pay parking lots but they are FREE during the farmers market! This market is huge with lots of vendors. Bring CASH. Most take credit but a few younger businesses only do cash or Venmo. There's a lot to offer - Filipino food, vegetables, fruits, spices, handmade crafts, baked goods, candles, sandwiches, etc. The food stalls are also open so you have a ton of awesome options for food while you are there!

However, it has returned this year and is slowly building steam again. Today was downright busy. The event includes typically about a dozen food trucks, a handful of veggie type vendors, and other area businesses ranging from the soon to be open downtown location of Rise n' Roll Donuts to Groomsville Popcorn, Oberweis Dairy, Gluten Free Creations, and a host of others. The Statehouse Market recently observed its 9th birthday. The only other time it has been interrupted was one year when it had to be moved over toward the Indiana State Museum due to some rehab going on in the Plaza. That was a rough year for wheelchair users and for anyone trying to squeeze in a food truck on a limited lunch schedule. A lot of folks don't know there is a downtown farmer's market - this is one of downtown Indy's best kept secrets and I look forward to it each week. Today, I visited NY Slice and I've definitely appreciated the variety that is maintained from week to week. Employees are notified each week which vendors will be present and it seems to be the one day when folks really get out of their cubicles and offices and get some fresh air and lunch. If you're in the area, I definitely recommend it.
