My work group took the SoCal Food Tour and were so impressed with our guides and the places we stopped. We got to learn about the history of Coronado Island and the people who made it what it is today. But the food and the experiences were wonderful! I won't spoil the stops list for future tour-goers, but the tastings are *chef's kiss*. Barb was incredibly generous with her time in working with us on our timeline for this tour and understood that we were on a tight timeline with our meeting schedules. We had mixed feeling before we booked this tour since we are frequent visitors to Coronado. However we were very pleased and surprised at the end of the day. Why it's called a food tour you get a lot more than "here taste this", you get a very complete historical tour of the city and some great food sampling keyed to the tour. We had three couples including ourselves... and hooked up with a great couple from Carlsbad. We did the tour on a Thursday... so traffic was easy... and the weather was perfect. We had a really fun day. Barbara has a great personality... and all 8 of us thought the tour was well worth the money. Interestingly... all of us were from the greater San Diego area... but we all learned many new things about Coronado today... and the History of Coronado. Barb treated us to food at Miguel's and we all purchased a drink... food was great ... atmosphere great. Then later she treated us to Vegetable Spring Rolls... California Roll... and Siam Lettuce Wraps... at Bistro d'Asia... everything was excellent. Barb's knowledge and information was fun and varied. After the L Frank Baum home and Star Park ... we went to Coronado Taste of Oils for a free wine tasting... and a wonderful fun Olive Oil and Balsamic tasting. And... we all got a 10% discount for purchases. We added a new wine to our collection... and two great Olive Oils and two great Balsamic vinegars. We had a wonderful time... made some new friends... learned a bunch of fun stuff... and it was truly a bargain. We recommend this tour highly. read more

I don't think this tour was worth the $50/person. We only hit up 2 restaurants, a shop for olive oil/balsamic vinegar, and a gelato shop. I was expecting a lot more since the description of the tour made it sound feel like we were going to the shops no one would notice unless you were looking for them. Three of the four shops were on the main street. Something everyone interested in the tour should know is that this tour does not take you to all the places they listed on the website. Apparently the sites you visit varies depending on what days you choose to go on the tour. Unlike what the website states, the sampling we had was not enough for a meal. You're probably better off getting a group of friends and using Yelp to find places to eat at and just google Coronado's history. read more

I went on the Coronado walking food tour with my hubby, and it was one of the funnest (if that's a real word) day dates we've had in awhile. The places they had on the tour were diverse, cool and very yummy. We also learned some cool and interesting facts about Coronado too, so it filled my mind as well as my tummy. We started at Fuel Juice Bar where we had a few samples of their tasty smoothies and parfaits, then to Costa Azul where we had the best shrimp cocktail I ever had and discounted margaritas. Then we went to Leroy's for a delicious app and sandwich. There was also a stop at Taste of Oils where I discovered olive oils and balsamic vinegars in flavors I never knew existed. Our final stop was a Wine Styles which included a tasting of a few different wines. Though we didn't know anyone else on the tour, by the middle of the tour, we were all laughing and having fun as if we'd known each other for some time. Other than water, drinks are not included, but the tour included enough food so that we were definitely full and satisfied, and several establishments gave discounts for return visits that more than paid for the price of the tour ticket. Oh yes, and they also gave everyone a gift bag with some goodies from Boney's Market. Gotta love free schwag, right?! Bottom line, if you are looking for a fun thing to do around town, especially if you are a foodie, I would definitely recommend checking out SoCal Food Tours. read more

On a most lovely San Diego day, I got to spend it in Coronado - and how fun and how quickly three hours went by at the SoCal Food tour! Highlights of being able to learn some of the "Emerald City" history, meet new friends, have a great experience of four local food businesses and get a good walk in! The restaurants we visited were welcoming, gracious and delicious!! The servings were just right (keeping in mind that we had several to go to) - with walking and excellent and interesting information given in between each location. S and I went on the walking food tour in Coronado. We met up at the Tent City Mural, headed to Costa Azul, Cafe 1134, Taste of Oils and then over to WineStyles. Our tour guide told us information about the city that we would have otherwise never known. We purchase a deal online for 2/$49, I'm not sure I would have paid that much for each person though. (Every person in our walking group had found a deal on some sort of local discount site.) read more

I was really excited for this tour and was pretty disappointed with my experience. First of all, our tour guide was very unprepared and nervous the whole entire time. I was really hard to enjoy the history of Coronado when I was always distracted by him messing up the facts and getting lost/confused on what to say next. As for the food part of the tour, our first stop was Alexander's Pizza and I thought their Mystic vegetarian pizza was delicous. The olive oil shop was also fun and the ice cream treat they served with their balsamic vinegar was very unique. We also visited an Asian fusion restaurant, which was very average and the last stop was Gelato. I was bummed that two out of the four samplings were ice cream and was expencting more of a variety of food to experience. If you are just looking for an outdoor activity and different way to explore Coronado, this may be what you like, but do not expect your taste buds to be amazed by the food. I recommend using Yelp instead to research good restaurants and explore the town on your own by renting bikes. read more

This is not a food tour. This is a gentle, mostly uninteresting walkabout through Coronado with some terrible food provided. If you are looking for a food tour I would choose another company. To be clear: this is not a food tour, and it should be labeled otherwise. It is certainly not worth the $50.00. We were on the Friday morning tour. I received this as a Christmas present, and the owner was incredibly gracious in allowing us to use the voucher after its expiration date. She was sweet as a tour guide, and worked hard to make sure everyone was included. The Olive Oil shop was a great stop (though, other than some forgettable ice cream, we had the same experience as one who walked in off of the street). I'm afraid the good points end there. The one star rating is certainly deserved: the customer service was wonderful. If it weren't for that I would be like many others on Yelp and wish we could award the tour zero stars. All of the food we sampled was awful, there was hardly any of it, and even if it were my first visit to the island I would have known to avoid each of these locations. Otherwise we walked a few blocks, took in sites anyone visiting the island would be sure to see without coaching, and the "insider knowledge" is mostly self evident. Throughout most of the tour I couldn't help feeling like my folks (who gifted me the tour) had been robbed, and that they had paid for a large advertisement for a couple of local shops. Many times I considered asking my friend if we should leave midway through. To provide a little context: I have been using Yelp for years and started an account simply to write this review. I know a fair amount about food, have worked in the industry for years at notable restaurants in NYC, and am not snobby: a Chicago Hot Dog is different than dining at Per Se, but I like 'em both. You could do this walking tour yourself, the tour guide enjoyed talking more about herself than Coronado, almost all foods were samples that you could get yourself, the pizza was terrible, no vegan options, also was a bit unsafe as we crossed streets without cross walks. We enjoyed this leisurely tour through Coronado, enjoying some great spots along the way! Fish tacos, quiche, cheese board, wine, and gelato. We also loved the balsamic and oil shop! It was great to learn some history about the area. This is not a high octane thrill tour, nor a 10 restaurant tasting tour - but it was a great way to get acquainted with Coronado, learn some quite interesting history, and find some really great gems! We had the added bonus of catching veteran Don Hubbard on his front porch and hearing a first-hand explanation of his time serving during the Cuba Missile Crisis as a naval aviator and his experience landing military planes on an aircraft carrier. 94 year old man, sharp, and ready at a moment's notice to share a piece of his life with us. Our tour guide, Barb, was accommodating, conversational, and hospitable. She was also knowledgeable and timely! If you are looking for a way to get to know Coronado and spend a couple of hours, this is a great option. read more

We won this tour as a door prize and went with low expectations. But it turned out to be a delightful way to spend an afternoon. As local San Diegans, we had visited Coronado many times, but Barb took us to places we hadn't seen, made local history come alive and introduced us to new and fun restaurants and food experiences. There were only six of us on this tour, and we had a chance to get to know Barb and the other participants over good food and a glass of wine at the end. If you haven't taken this tour, try it out. This is an easy 3 hour walk and tasting tour through Coronado, CA. We stopped at 4 different restaurants and had chili, pizza and salad, ice cream, olive oil tastings, and a final stop at a wine bar. On a beautiful, sunny Friday in May we had the pleasure of touring Coronado and being informed of the many interesting historical happenings by our guides Lori and Kevin. The tour lasted 3 hours which included various homes, historical landmarks, museum (Kingston Trio) and business establishments located in the downtown area. After completing this, you will probably go back and spend additional time at some of the locations visited possibly passing some of newly gleaned info on to friends and relatives. read more

We purchased this tour through an online discount (I can't remember which) so it was quite affordable. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We started with Asian Fusian where the food was ample and delicious. For lunch we went to Cafe 1134 which was unremarkable. We especially enjoyed the visit to Coronado Taste of Oils where they gave us samples of ice cream topped with balsamic vinegar and amaretto. That place is a gem! We also saw lots of historic places including the house where Frank Baum wrote The Wizard of Oz. A fun morning and the food alone covered the cost. read more

We live only about 10 minutes from Coronado, before moving to San Diego we stayed at the Hotel del 3 times and have visited the Hotel del and Coronado many more times. That said, we loved the tour and found it very informative. Most useful were the facts about the area and the history. Second in importance to us was getting introduced to some of the food places. My husband and I did the food tour today and found it to be a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon and cap off our weekend. Coronado Island is so beautiful, but if you go there without knowing where to eat, or drink, you can easily fall into a tourist trap. The food tour gave us some history and knowledge of Coronado and some of its most wonderful eateries as well as specialty stores. During the two hour tour we ate Italian gelato, some really wonderful Mexican cuisine as well as really delicious noveau American fare. We also had alcoholic beverages available to us at all time (at an extra but discounted price) and we also experienced an oil and balsamic vinegar sampling topped off with a wine tasting. We visited a total of five fabulous places and they were all conveniently close to one another, in the heart of Coronado's Downtown area. The staff was knowledgeable and very professional. I highly recommend this tour for tourists and locals alike. We live in Solana Beach and now have a better familiarity with one of our favorite places; Coronado. read more

We took a food tour from Barb on a warm Sunday afternoon in mid-May and had a fabulous time! Her vast historical knowledge of Coronado and John D. Spreckels (sugar magnate & Coronado benefactor) was shared with a great sense of humor, making the tour fun and entertaining. What a beautiful day we had to enjoy a wonderful tour! My boyfriend purchased certificates through the Union Tribune Daily Deals and it was well worth it. Our guide, Carrie, was knowledgeable and personable. We started off with some history of Coronado and than hit the pavement. First stop was Costa Azul where we had delicious chips,salsa and street tacos. Nothings beats a cheap and yummy Margarita before noon either. We strolled over to Star Park, which I had never been to, and learned more info about the city. Then moved on to Cafe 1134 where we were served a very enjoyable caesar salad and mini pizza. Taste of Oils was next and we never realized how many varieties of vinegar and olive oils are out there. We ended the day with a great wine tasting at WineStyles. The only suggestion I would put out there is to add a couple of more restaurants. Overall, it is a great tour and would be perfect for visiting friends/family to experience Coronado. read more
