Social Security at any location is not where I enjoy visiting. It's when I have a hard time with anything I suck it up and go. They definitely keep our information as secure as they can. They sent a email that our online login as it currently exists won't be available soon. We have to create a Login.gov or ID.me account. I believe I have both set up. I had to set them up when I wanted to view my Federal Income Tax documents online. It was a hassle and it required facial recognition. I'm dreading the change but I know I can go back to this office if I need help! I'm not going to recommend either way. Absolutely lucked out, i was done in under an hour. There's 18 stations here but only one is serving people, I don't understand. The security guy is no help. All he does is tell you to get a ticket and to sit down. How is that helpful? They skip people and sometimes don't call your number. Make sure you look at the screen the whole time. Try to sit as far away from everyone at this location. Someone who sat next to me kept farting. This place had like 10 people ahead of me at 1pm. Why aren't more workstation windows open? I don't understand this. The other complaints about this location are so accurate. The steinway location was so much better. There's a lot of seats and the place is very clean. There's a bathroom right in the front of the location. Its a male restroom and a female restroom. I wish the guy sitting next to me would have went instead of stinking up the joint. I accompanied a friend with mental and emotional disabilities to this location first thing in the morning to help him navigate a quagmire of overpayment allegations and suspended benefits. We were met with a very friendly woman who checked him in at the kiosk with a smile. We were then assigned a window within 10 minutes. The representative, Miss Deb, surpassed all my expectations of a government employee. Miss Deb took her time to review my friend's situation, and with great compassion and empathy, she explained to him what was going on and what he needed to do next. Even though my friend's situation wasn't resolved on that day, he left with a full understanding of what and why his benefits were screwed up. I know if Miss Deb could have done more for him, she would have! read more

I was actually really impressed with the speed at which they manage to get things done here! When I walked in, I worried that it could take a while because it was pretty important that I manage to get out to Manhattan within a couple of hours. To my surprise they moved really quickly. The only real problem was that the form I purchased was $136 and one of the copies given to me only had one of the two pages it was supposed to have and the second one is supposed to have the official seal so it was completely null and void. I didn't manage to notice this until I got home and it was a major bummer to see something I had spent so much money on was incomplete, so hopefully I won't end up having to buy it again. Thanks to the lovely lady in window 5 I've changed my opinion about ss ofice here in LIC. She was lovely, knowledgeable, patient and very kind. She knows her stuff and will effortlessly take you through the process. Yes its busy, and yes one has to wait but have all your papers in order before you go. Ask, call as many people as you can think and gor prepared. I almost went without picture I.D. I thought to pop in to senior center and they said DON'T do appointment over the phone you'll have to download picture i.d. from home -Go in person. Glad I did. I got out of there in 1.5 hours and was done. So my fellow SS enrollees go prepared, know you will be there a bit, and bring something to do while you wait. This place is HORRIBLE...try to avoid..I went here with my mom on a few different occasions. She is trying to get Medicare plan b, and my dad retired from the union- each time they gave her a different form/paperwork/things to bring. No one here gives a rat's ass about you or knows wtf they're talking about. Today was the 5th attempt to go there...now they want a letter showing that people in my dad's Local 12 company were insured. I've visited this office 3 days in a row now. Each time has been pretty horrible. I have been attempting to submit paperwork for my mother's Medicare Part B application, but first they wouldn't allow me to submit it without a note from her doctor, but a phone call to social security informed me that I could apply to be payee representative instead- and I wouldn't need a doctor's note. This is WRONG, but if you have someone who's sick and you will be the person to take care of them, apply for payee representative. My second visit I was turned away for a payee representative interview because they close at noon on Wednesday and it was 5 minutes to 12. Beware this office closes at 4 every other weekday and they're not even open on weekends. Pretty sweet hours if you ask me. The shortened work-week doesn't seem to help their attitude though. Every time I was yelled at- and everytime they were incomplete with the information they gave me. So beware if you come here. Read all the paperwork they give you before you leave. Another reviewer mentioned this tendency of theirs as well. If you are are trying to do anything for a loved one in their absence, Social Security does NOT accept Powers of Attorneys. You will need a Physician/Medical Officer's Statement of Patient's Capability to Manage Benefits form (you can find this online by Googling. As of June 2017 the form number is SSA-787) to be completed by your relative's Physician. You will need the Physician's office to fax that form to this social security office at (718) 512-0493. You will NEED your disabled loved one's ID, as well as your own. OR you will need an advanced notification of Representative Payment form (form number SSA-4164) signed by your loved one and if they sign with an X, then make sure you have 2 witness signatures. After they interview you at the social security office, it will take them 15 business days to get back to you with a verdict. Only after that can you conduct business for your loved one. All this they have told me, bit by bit, over several days. So I've done everything they've asked of me. Maybe tomorrow I'll have some luck. You do get called fairly quickly. I've been called within 10 minutes of obtaining a ticket- but I've mostly visited in the morning. Each representative sees you in their own personal booth, but that does not account for their attitude or incomplete information. Oh, they also don't let you eat or drink at this location's seating area- the security officers are VERY vocal about this- and they don't let you talk on your cell phone in the seating area. You can apparently talk on your cell in the area off to the side. I just don't know why they have to yell at you when they inform you of this. I was talking to my mother's Physician who has been so cooperative of Social Security's whims. I would NOT recommend this SS office to do your business. You can go to any office, don't get locked into returning to this one like I did. When I first applied for Social Security for my mom, we applied at the William Street location- and though they weren't friendly either- I didn't have to visit them an indefinite number of times afterwards to complete 1 task. I became extremely ill and had to go on permanent Disabality. I applied on line for SSDI . Having to go to my local Social Security office was the worst experience ever . They are not informative and extremely rude . Acting like they was doing me a favor . It took a year and a half before I came across a employee that would just do his job . Most humiliating experience . My recommendation is to re train staff on how to treat others , not to form personal option and when all else fails from them all . read more

I visited the location : 31-08 37th Avenue Astoria, NY where I applied for Social Security benefits.It was pleasant and I was served in an timely manner. Subsequently, I needed to inquire about Medicare Part B for myself and Spouse. The person on the phone was extremely efficient with excellent communicaton skills as well as telephone etiquette. At that point I asked if faxing was an option and was given a fax number. Then asked who was I speaker to. She replied ,Ms. Backer who is the Supervisor for this location. Upon faxing the required documents I requested to speak with Ms.Backer once again. I was transferred and she acknowledged it was received and preceded to assign my application to a worker. The total process was 2 weeks. Ms. Backer also reviewed my sons application and made recommendations. As an Administrator, Ms Backer is personable and operates a very organized office. She is both knowledgeable and an asset to Social Security Administration. In conclusion my experience was both positive and rewarding. read more

She patiently walked me through all of my questions and explained in specific detail how my payments will be allocated and did so with a sense of respect and kindness towards me. I have a spastic neurological condition called myelopathy, and I walk with assistive devices. I want to make an official complaint against your employee, a Ms. Cox. She displayed utter disregard of humanity, of professionalism and she failed to provide the time I was entitled as a normal citizen, let alone under the Americans with Disabilities Act on a federal property. I am requesting that she be fired and that I be informed in regards to your corrective actions in this regard. On 8/7/2018, I came and was asked by Ms. Cox to state my business while I was still approaching the window's seat. When I stated to her that I needed to sit down and produce the documents I wanted to review with her, she stated that she doesn't have time, because she has a lot of people to assist after me. I replied to her that this is my time and that I need her to focus on the quality of service I needed to discuss the reasons of my visit. Ms. Cox REFUSED to review the 1 page note and the SSA-632 form as supportive documentation, as well as a notification from that very Long Island City Social Security Administration she works for, and insisted that I tell her what I needed without reading anything. Please check on her degree of literacy as I suspect that she is illiterate, or just displaying crass disregard for individuals with disabilities who are seeking assistance at the Long Island City SA's office. I mentioned that I had two points to discuss and she stopped me after uttering my one request stating: "This is the Birmingham office's department, even if it's addressed to us and we cannot help you here, therefore you need to leave." It had taken me two hours to prepare and come to the SA office to address the two issues of concern (including a letter from the very LIC SSA office asking me to drop by the office before August 18th -my 2nd point of discussion-), so I requested that I speak with her supervisor. She stated that her supervisor's name is 'Mr. G' (she didn't know her supervisor's last name, which the security guard knew and spelled for me at a later time, i.e. Mr. Guichardo). Initially Ms. Cox had threatened to "call Security" instead of directing me to her supervisor; fortunately, the security guard helped me with the spelling of her supervisor's name and I was able to see AND address BOTH MY POINTS with Mr. Guichardo (and yes, they were pertinent to the Long Island City's Social Security office's, not Birmingham's). I'm attaching a letter of commendation for Mr. Guichardo, who showed great professionalism, competence, empathy and was able to assist me with my two concerns. Ms. Cox is a danger to the reputation of the Social Administration's Code of Ethics, Mission Statement and duties to the tax-payers who pay for your services, with her incompetence, arrogance and disregard for the disabled individuals who are seeking assistance and relief at your office. Please let me know what is the result of your disciplinary actions against Ms. Cox. Please be advised that this individual would be promptly fired after 3 days of incompetent and arrogant behavior in any office outside the Social Security Administration. I suggest you do the same! Sincerely, Following a complaint I had made against Ms. Cox, for refusing to hear points of request for assistance at the long Island City Social Security office, I was able to speak with Mr. Guichardo, her supervisor. I was immediately put at ease by his empathetic attention and competent actions, in terms of assisting me. He allowed me to expose my two points requesting assistance, took the necessary time to review the supporting documentation I had brought and the agency's own records on the matter and assisted me in terms of scheduling the necessary appointments with this agency to address specific issues of appeal. This is true professionalism and I greatly appreciate Mr. Guichardo throughout my own visit at your office. He is a credit to your agency and he knows how to address, evaluate and assist individuals with disabilities. Please extend my thanks to Mr. Guichardo for his assistance in my regard. read more
