I'm surprised Social Security is still around! We've been hearing for decades that Social Security will be 86'd and will have died a slow death before I/we can collect what we have so diligently paid into it. For being another bloated Government organization, I've always had good interactions with the Social Security staff, albeit minimal instances that I've contacted them. Given the news reports you almost expect to be on hold for a month waiting for a harried, bi-polar representative who will "be with you shortly." Maybe it was sheer luck but I got through in five minutes and concluded my business quickly with a human who couldn't have been more helpful. Social Security has a few offices in Manhattan. This one is rather sterile and uninviting like going to the Driver's license office. I'm certainly glad I have been able to handle everything by phone and online. I received a email with scam information. I'm going to attach important information to this review. I was very careful before I clicked on the email thinking maybe the scam warning email was a scam! I'm certainly glad I currently don't need to visit Social Security. If I do I will go closer to where I currently live. read more

please read the laws concerning your qualifications for benefits. I had two situation that they told me I was not qualified and I had to prove them wrong .I called 1800 number the lady in one word told me I wasn't qualified and that was that ,no use arguing with her. I decided to go to the office sit there for a long time . my number was called and the lady( desk four) qualified me and told me to sit and wait for other lady behind the desk. she told me I am not qualified so because I read the requirement on the ss website told her that I am qualified.she finally asked another employee and now gave me telephone appointment. so I had to sit there for 5 hours for no reason. just please know your right . don't assume the employees at this office care about you. they have their own problem in life to solve. read more

After 4pm, the location is very empty. Easy to go inside. you'll need to take a mask to entree. Security guards were friendly. No waiting hours. You can't charge your cellphone at this location. Good transportations around this area. read more

An unorganized mess from the moment you walk in the door. Even though you sit waiting for your number to be called some people just walk in and walk up to windows and are taken care of because no one asks you to prove your number and that it's actually your turn. Not to mention one worker is behind glass, wearing a mask and calling out numbers without a microphone... no one can hear her. Ridiculous. When you arrive in the 5th floor you will see a check in kiosk. I'm here for an award letter and the representative payer report for my dad. The kiosk ask why you are here, I selected Award Letter. My number was E50. They were serving E46. It was 9:39 am. At 10:17, the number jumped to E54. I asked the security guard and he said the award letters are given out on the 4th floor. No one told me that and there are no signs to direct people to the 4th floor. Since I'm also here for the representative payer report for my dad, I need to speak to someone on 5. And I need to select "other" for the why question. Now I've wasted 38 minutes. Thanks for not letting people know where they should be. Thanks for missing signage directing people to the correct floor. You are doing a wonderful job helping me waste my time. read more

Horrible. They are blatently & fraudulently falsefying applications to push you to appeal a bogus declined letter. The woman who filled out my application, (their employee) refused medical documents to be submitted with my claim, cut off 3 years of my medical history and dumbed down my medical history. They are abusing the application process there to steer people to sit on an appeal even though it's your taxes which paid their salary. Calling is no better, neither by phone nor in person could I get the tech support number for the online SSD service. Government corruption at it's sleeziest. They had their laugh on me. You can't believe it unless it happens to you, adding insult at the end of my experience they will no longer be serving me at that location. I had to go elsewhere. read more

Ms. Knight was able to help my Mom and I in one day after 7 months of trying to resolve her case. She is truly a wonderful employee. She actually listened to my Mom's issues, was compassionate and reached out to the correct person that was supposed to help with our issue. She didn't hang up the phone until everything was resolved. That same day, my Mom's problem was fixed! We are so thankful to her and I don't think she knows how important her assistance was for my Mom. read more

This is maybe my third time here. I wasn't a helper the two times prior so that won't make it to this review. For this review, we will start with today. I have been up since three in the morning. It's now almost four in the afternoon. I came from queens and decided that since most of their offices close super early, I should get into an office in the city on my way home to the Bronx. I definitely wasn't going to make it to any NJ offices. I'm in my business suit and heels so obviously I'm tired. The guard there, an older Hispanic gentleman, told me to wait for him to simply check me in on the self service machine. Then he explained that they didn't take cash but they did take credit cards and money order. I asked where would I get a money order from. He expressed that Rite Aid ACROSS the street would be able to give me one. Not only is there absolutely no Rite Aid across the street ... it's Duane Reade and they don't have money orders. They refer me to Western Union which is one mile away. I think GPS Rite Aid which turns out to be about three blocks over; I get there to be told that they do not provide money orders either. A customer in RA informs me that the Post Office would be able to give me the money orders butttt they are about five extra blocks away. I finally get the money order to return and my number has been skipped because it took so damn long getting a stinking money order to pay for ONE sheet of paper. I'm now late for all of my other appointments and the replacement guard could care less. Now I'm starting the process all over again. GO FIGURE ... and all i did was follow directions. Then they take so damn long to call the number anyway. read more

I'm upgrading my review from a 1 star to a 3 star, ONLY because of the woman behind the counter who helped me today. The first intelligent sign of life I have encountered in my FIVE trips to the Social Security office. First of all, when you go there, you will get a number, but no one is seen in order. Secondly, the people working there are NOT experts in matters pertaining to Social Security or Medicare. This office is truly a crap shoot in terms of the help you receive. If you are there to deal with Medicare issues, good luck. The previous person I spoke with there assured me that the penalty I was paying for Part B would be rolled back after showing her no gap in coverage, and instead, inadvertently DISenrolled me from part B. (and this was a supervisor I spoke with after the first person who looked like a deer in the headlights.) After FOUR VISITS to this office, I decided to try the office in the financial district, which is highly rated. THAT woman told me I had to go back to West 48th street to have the supervisor straighten it out! Are you kidding me??? Don't you all have the same records in the same system? With dread in every pore of my being, I went back up to West 48th Street, where I FINALLY saw someone who was NOT confused by my situation and could connect the dots. I pray it happens this time. Because of this lovely and dare I say it, intelligent woman, I am upping my review from one stars to three. Stay tuned. read more

After wasting my time going to the inexistant office on W 44th street, I walked all the way to W 48th to be told by the security guard that this office is only for retirement matters. Do not go there for anything else you'll be wasting your time. The right office is the one downtown on William street. read more

It is a disgrace the way people are treated at the Social Security office on 48th Street. It's beyond crowded (which is to be expected), understaffed, and it's not a big space so there aren't enough chairs. Then the people that work there went to lunch from 1130-1 but, we weren't allowed to leave! I was there from 9:15AM and finally was done at 3. People that are going there are disabled, sick and elderly and are treated like garbage. read more

The worst. I arrived at the Social Security office on 48th between Broadway and 8yh Ave. and received a ticket listing 9:04am as my arrival time. After 20 minutes my number was called and told to wait until until my name was called. It is now 1pm and there is no indication that I am going to be called any time soon. It's like they purposely try to discourage you with all this waiting for something as simple as an address change. It is disgusting and there no reason for this. read more

Horrifying. And to think our tax dollars pay the salaries of the employees. I arrived at 830AM and was the 2nd person on line - the office opened at 9AM. By 12:45, they had still not called my name. I asked several times but they just shrugged their shoulders. I explained to a person at a desk behind a glass window that I was deaf in one ear and she said "people do hear what they WANT to hear". I left at 1:15 without ever having spoken with a representative altho a select few special people were taken into the office. We could see them thru the glass windows moving as slowly as possible. I never got to apply for benefits. Disgraceful. How the US government allows this is beyond me. read more

The security guard is the rudest person I've seen, in a long time. He belittles people on there way up to the social security office, by first asking what they're there for. When they tell him, he proceeds to tell them, they have to go to the other office. This can be baffling to people that can't imagine this office doesn't do that. But the manner in which he talks to them is disgraceful. He continues, by saying, I've been here three years, and if you were going to ask me any other question and not listen to me when I first said it, youll have to Google it. This office ( West 48th Street) is a total disgrace to the Social Security System, which is an essential element of life in the U.S. Poorly located, poorly laid out, poorly maintained, it is beneath anyone's dignity to come here and try to get service. Faulty/nonfunctional video displays. F aulty/malfunctional microphones by the personnel at the four plexiglass-enclosed windows. Customer-facing representatives with speech impediments, deplorable attitudes, and lack of basic knowledge about the procedures. In one session (over 4 hours waiting for a resolution) I observed loads of super-frustrated people muttering, cursing, and complaining about the rude, protracted ignorant "service." A complete nightmare that should not be allowed to exist. Citizens of the U.S. should NEVER have to be subjected to this nonsense. read more
