I went for a SS card replacement. I am a US citizen. 3 Stars is for A-OK. I had very low expectations walking into the SS processing area. I was pleasantly surprised. I actually went online and read all the documentation and then did a follow-up call to confirm address and documents. Yeah, I actually read - it's that easy folks. Instructions ETA: Get there when it opens. Total Time: (from Security scanners to walking out) 45min Docs needed (as of 2012): Current Original Passport (not a photocopy) Filled out PDF (http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.pdf), printed, signed and double-checked for mistakes before you even walk out your door. ++++++++++++++ Rules of engagement: Never come to ANY gov. agency with a bad attitude, air of entitlement, confused, late, etc. That is extremely counterproductive and will only perpetuate the bad connotations we have of these systems - and some of the employees are just miserable PERIOD. Unfortunately for NY residents, the DMV requires you to produce your Social Security card when you're replacing your out-of-state license with a NY one. I don't think I've seen my Social Security card in person in the last decade, so I trundled off to their Fulton St location this morning, prepared to battle the bureaucratic giant. Not wanting to stand on line with my fellow Brooklyners for hours, I arrived about 20 minutes after the 7am opening time. That's probably your best bet because I went right upstairs, was second in line, and everything was done in about 10 minutes. The rows and rows and amusment park-esque rope lines downstairs, however, suggested that anyone who arrived any later in the morning or afternoon would encounter a hefty wait time. My advice: print and fill out any necessary applications in advance, double and triple check the documents you need to bring before going, and arrive early. Also, Brooklyn residents need to go the 625 Fulton St. office. There's apparently another office at 195 Montague, which I almost went to, but if you live in BK, you need Fulton St. read more

Was pleasantly surprised this week when I went to apply for a replacement social security card. I arrived on Monday morning at 7:20 AM and was worried it might be busier than usual since the Friday earlier had a delayed opening. Was one of maybe 5 people in there. Walked in, came up to floor 6 and had my bag checked by security. I then entered my SS number and received a number to wait. Less than 30 seconds later my number was called. I had filled out my form in advance, but you have the option to do that at the office as well. I was asked for I.D. (I used my passport, and they did not need to see my license). Was asked for my birth certificate but did not have that. Was not a problem. Was told I would receive my card in about 2 weeks. Received it by mail Friday of the same week. So much better than I expected, and the people in there couldn't be nicer. I think I was in the building for all of ten minutes. I did try to go a few weeks ago at 2:30 PM and the line for the elevator alone deterred me. Definitely worth waking up early for! And reading yelp posts helped me understand what to expect and what to bring. read more

I put off coming here for two months because I was dreading some sort of Kafka-esque bureaucracy maze filtered through the lens of downtown Brooklyn. Finally, at 8:45 a.m. on a Tuesday, I dragged myself through the doors. There was no wait to get in or upstairs, and I didn't see any security checks. Since I already had my paperwork filled out, I was told to take a number from the machine. The waiting room is large, bright and clean. They even played elevator music to "soothe" us while we waited. It took maybe seven minutes from when I sat down to when I was seen. The lady who assisted me wasn't exactly buddy-buddy, but she was certainly polite. I was in and out of there in fifteen minutes. I guess I should maybe wait to write this review until my Social Security card arrives in the mail, but so far I'd say this is a stellar example of how government agencies should operate. Wanted to second the above review. There is NO FOOD allowed in the building. This includes any food (a delicious salad that I ended up having throw out) in a tupperware container. :( You also better look at every documentation requirement before you go. I went to the cards office, which is clean with plenty of seats. The system for helping people is efficient and the wait wasn't too long on a Tuesday morning, mid-month. But pray to the gods that you don't get window 26 where the meanest woman in the world sits and waits for the next opportunity to ruin another person's day with her sour attitude. read more

What can I say about the SS office? How about that it is kept very clean? Or that they have comfortable chairs... Perhaps a friendly staff? Short wait time? Yes, I could say all this. And I just did. I got here at 1250pm, which was a mistake in retrospect since apparently several employees were on lunch. I was greeted at the door by an armed security guard who was probably the friendliest security guard I've ever met. He had a very uplifting voice full of spirit. That was nice to see. They had about three windows operating, with probably close to 35 ticket numbers in line (not counting people's families). No problem, I read my Kindle and just hung out for a bit. At about 1:30pm they opened another three windows and numbers flew out faster than Vin Diesel at a strip club. I got out of there by about 2pm and was off to enjoy being caught in a thunderstorm. The entire staff was actually very friendly and they have a clean bathroom. I was almost speechless at the cleanliness and smoothness of the whole experience (not IN the bathroom, guys, the entire experience at SS Office...!) Although everything... As good as advertised.The place is clean, quiet, well-lit. No annoying security guards or sign-in processes. The wait was short -- I came in around 10am, and was seen in about 10 minutes. The clerk who helped me was friendly, easy to understand and efficient. He even apologized for a typo (which he quickly fixed). Imagine that! The government apologizing. This Ssa is called Bkln card center on the 6th floor, which was better than the on on Suffolk County. The place was big. There were many safeguards. I rushed into the check -in to get the ticket, the guards talked to me and smiled. I felt so great. That was why I worn a Nike t-shirt. Hahaha. A sweet Chinese lady served me, she kept me waiting for 2 mins cause she talked to her colleague about what to do after work ;-/ after all, her service was quick and polite. When I went to this SS office Ny was having the arctic weather!!..I arrived at12:00 ,the line started from the outside of the building...in this bone chilling Weather it's brutal...this line took me to tge elevator after4 hours..then at 4:30 I was called to the Window 26...!!!!!##! Before even I was called I could hear someone yelling in the microphone from this window.. "be aware of Window 26"... she was rude,impolite and made me come back again... The next day I went there in the end of the office hour and there was no line ..and I got out within 10 minutes..this time I got some different window!!!...he was nice n I got my SS card within two weeks by mail... So its hard to review this place..it is very unpredictable..if u are lucky u won't have any problem..n if u are not...then u wud have a very inconvenient,bad experience...:) read more

I was recently married and already feeling overwhelmed due all of the documents I need to change to add my husband's last name. SSA is the first step in changing documents after marriage because every other legitimate agency checks with them to verify the name change. I woke up this morning sighing about the long wait that I was going to have at the SSA. When I walked in, there will be a line (it wasn't too long that morning), waiting to enter my SS# into a computer. Once I completed the info., the computer gave me a ticket with a number on it and I had to wait for that number to be called. I only had to wait 20 minutes and my number was called. WHOAH!!!! The trip on the train was longer than waiting to be called. Everything there was so very well-organized. There were tons of booths open at the same time and people were being called pretty quickly. The person who took care of my problem was nice and so pleasant to deal with. If I ever have a SS issue again, this is definitely my go-to office even though I live in Queens. read more

First you go into one room and wait in a fairly long line to pass the security checkpoint, but there are fans blowing and the atmosphere is almost relaxed. The line moves pretty fast. Your number gets called and you go to the window and it's all very smooth and pleasant. They don't even charge you any money if it's a replacement card. I got my card maybe a week and a half later, printed on stationery that was flecked with pastel confetti. read more

I literally got there at 7:10 am in the morning to a sea of empty chairs no one was there but me yet I still got a damm number sat down took my jacket off and my number was called, The woman who helped me was courteous and professional and even wished me a nice day, she even told me it was good that I came this early because any time after 9 is a hell hole lmfao. Yes! I got here at 7:15am and left at 7:25am. You come in go through bag check, print out a ticket and wait for your number to be called. I need them to fix my DOB and a replacement card. I brought my passport, drivers license and pre filled out the form at home. The overall process was quick and efficient. Why can't other government offices be like this?! After having my SS card stolen several years ago, I have been dreading this visit. In fact, I once tried to show up to an office in Brooklyn (I'm assuming before this one opened) early in the morning and after being confronted by a line out the door, and a security guard who stated that there was a 45 min wait just to get to the elevator, much less to be serviced, I cut and ran. Fast forward to this afternoon. The building and office was pleasant and empty. I had budgeted an hour for the visit after reading the other reviews here, just in case, but from the time I walked in from the street, to walking out the door again was less than 15 minutes including hallways, elevators, security, and waiting to be seen. Great customer service! I was in and out in 15 minutes!!! I still cannot believe it. It was my second time applying for SSC, first time when I applied for SSC in another office, I had had a horrible experience. I waited on line almost for two hours just to go through the metal detectors! The security guards were talking about how spent their weekends and were not paying attention to their job. Since I had a really bad experience first time, so today I was expecting to spend couple of hours in this office. As soon as I finished filling out the form, my number was called. like other reviewers I have to say I was impressed at the speed of this place. I did not come in early like most suggested here but came in around 1:00 on a Thursday and was out the door by 1:30. Drastic difference compared to going to to the DMV or other government condoned like facilities. Word to the wise, it's probably best to print and fill out the social security request form on the government website and have everything ready prior to getting there. The only thing that seemed to make this even a slight bit of the wait is whenever anybody was called they would have to fill the paperwork out in front of the clerk and although it really isn't lengthy it will certainly shave off the time to get in and get out. I arrived to the office at 7.10. And i was number A9, i think only 4 people were before me. Security guard was extremely nice and told me what to do and where to wait. My waiting time was at the most 5 min. I was expecting hundred questions from ss officer. I gave my documents(in my case i was changing my last name): old ss card, passport, marriage certificate and i filled out form( i printed and filled it out at home, in order to save some time). A very nice lady told me that i will get my new card in about 10 days, gave me a receipt, told me to check if everything is correct and wished me a nice day. I was out in 10 min. P.S. The place is a government agency that deals with peoples lives so expect them to act that way. Security is extremely tight (which it should be) so please dont bring ANY food here and I mean any. The lines (there are two of them) to actually get into the building are long and can get a little boring so patience is mandatory of youre not an early bird. Once inside the atmosphere is less hectic compared to the security check but still highly professional. The clerks do their job to the letter and seem devoid of humor but the result is a job well done. read more

Line for numbers was long and after you get number it is the screen like TV which showing numbers and also they calling people. You so confused from where is YOUR number will come ??? I arrived on a weekday afternoon and checked in via a kiosk at the door which assigned me a waiting number. But they proceeded to call me immediately - I hadn't even had time to fill out the paperwork needed for a SS card renewal. I went at 7:15am on a Wednesday morning, was given my ticket. Next number to call and I realized that I ONLY HAD 1 PERSON AHEAD OF ME. Was out of there by 7:25am!!! The other reviewers aren't deceiving you--this place runs smoother than any other government office you've been to. Put off going here because dealing with the courthouse had been such an agonizing pain, but I was in and out of here within 10 minutes, at 8 am! Staff was instructive and quick, and didn't have that constantly annoyed tone that so many of the courthouse employees have. I even overheard them helping a very unprepared man with zero judgment. (They also don't treat you like you're an idiot, how refreshing!) The building is a little wonky like most government places, but it's pretty clean and inoffensive. Numbers are called and displayed clearly. I recommend filling out the forms beforehand because in all likelihood you won't even have that much time before you're called up. It'll be over before you know it, so don't procrastinate like I did! read more

Quick and easy! I went for a name change after getting married. After stressing about whether I would be able to make my "made into middle "change, I was able to do so, no problem! The helpful clerk explained that your LEGAL Name is your first and last, and even though the office that did our marriage license would not alter my middle name, it was fine to legally make the maiden Dash middle swap.
