the worst place ive been calling for a month now they have all my documents and has now made 2 months like i need my identification ive been caling calling calling calling and calling no answer and when answer they hang up right away like where is the help they need proffessionals who care about they work and other people read more

I called the 1-800 number for social security and was told that the address was 625 Jay Street... even when I googled "social security 625 Jay St" the hours of operation came up so I never questioned the address - maybe because the closest train is the Jay St. station? Anyway, I'm curious if I'm the only one who was walking around like an @sshole for an hour scratching my head because I couldn't find 625 Jay Street - it ends at 457 Jay Street before it turns into Smith Street. The google map app on my phone kept saying 625 Jay St was at the corner of Jay St and Fulton. No joke, I walked around in circles for an hour trying to find the building, and I called the 1-800 number to see if I had the right address and was told, there was no 625 anything address for social security in Brooklyn and that the building had probably moved. Then I was told I could go to 195 Montague to THAT social security office, but when I asked if I could apply for a new card there, the guy said "no, you have to do that at 625 Fulton Street"... confused I asked "but didn't you just say there was no 625 ANYTHING in Brooklyn?" anyway... I figured I'd walk down Fulton to try to find the building and perhaps I'd just go back tomorrow to apply for a new card since I was already late for work by this time...when I got there, I didn't notice a line so I figured I'd see how long the wait was. Going through security was a hassle in and of itself because the security guards were talking about their weekend plans and not paying attention to me - my stuff had already been scanned and I was waiting to be directed through the metal detector - I was told to wait for the officer to wave me through, and so I stood there as the officer that was supposed to wave me through just kept talking to the other guy scanning items who told me to wait for him. Utter disrespect and poor work ethic. I'm sorry, but you're getting paid to do your job, not to sit around talking all day and holding people up. I get upstairs on the 6th floor, the security guard who directed me to the machine to get a ticket was respectful and helpful - I got number 36 and they had just called number 29, okay, not bad. I sit down to wait, and I notice two things... 1) window 7 had just finished helping a person, but instead of calling the next number, she proceeded to talk to a security guard about god knows what. It was not work related since they were laughing and the security guard was making fun of a guy who walked out of there with his pants down around his knees... he impersonated the guy, waddling and saying "I'm so gangsta!... pull up your pants, son!"... this went on for a good 10mins... I watched as several other numbers were called, yet the service agent at window 7 was perfectly content wasting everyone's time and making fun of people with the security guard.... 2) there were several windows behind me with service agents sitting there talking to each other... they weren't taking numbers because it seemed like, well, they just didn't feel like it. I don't know if they were all 3 on break and they decided to spend it sitting at the window talking to each other or what, but this was pretty frustrating. It's almost as if it's their PASSION to waste people's time. Again, you're being paid to do a job. I'm sure it's not that hard. You call numbers and people walk up to your window and you help them. Why I witnessed a total of 4 windows of service agents failing to do their jobs is beyond me... it took me 25mins total which overall isn't bad, but it could have taken me 5 had those people had any worth ethic at all. read more

I feel like my overall experience was generally OK at the Social Security Administration Office. The thing that made me knock off stars was the length of wait time (although the place was completely packed when I arrived). It took me about 2 hours, although I assumed it would be even longer when I first arrived. The thing is, after 3pm, it was like the employees kicked into high gear and suddenly things were moving quicker. Overall it was a simple process to apply for my first card, and I came over prepared but I always tend to play it safe. I'd suggest arriving first thing in the morning if you want to avoid the wait that I endured. read more

I was a walk in with no appointment....or application filled out. I was seen within 10 minutes and didn't even have to pull out a birth certificate. This location is by far the best I've ever been to. Highly recommended!!! read more

preface: i've been hyper-responsible all my life, obsessively paying bills as soon i a receive them, never missing a deadline, doing prior research on every single new endeavor, etc etc. as i get older, the less shit i've started to give. i've lived in nyc for over 5 years, and on the cusp of the expiration of my out of state ID that i never bothered to replace which coincides with the birthday that puts me smack dab in my "mid-thirties", i figured i should finally admit my nys residency status and get a new ID. now, even in my later age, i still hate waiting for stuff more than having to give a shit, so i did some research on the documents i will need to obtain said ID. blah blah blah, a passport counts for the maximum 6 points for proof of name! hoorah! BUT, you still need to show a social security card. ok, no problem, it's in the drawer of my nightstand where it always has been for the last 3.5 years. NOT SO. i have no memory of relocating my social security card from its home, but gone, *poof*. review: i arrived at the ssn office on a thursday afternoon for a replacement, dreading what was sure to be an inefficient and trying ordeal of government bureaucracy, bag packed with reading materials. i breezed through the downstairs lobby, then through the elevator, then a hallway, and arrived at the door following the blue tape on the floor. the waiting room was vast and brightly (albeit flourescently) lit, with nary a soul sitting on its numerous chairs! in: 1:30 out: 1:42 BOOM. i hope my experience at the dmv will be as pleasant. I had a great experience! As a Puertorrican, they respect you and value your documents from the island (ex: doctor's certificated letter). Before this I went to the Jamaica, Queen, office where I was highly misinformed and discriminated. The lady in this Brooklyn location was extremely considerate and capable to prove wrong the information I was told in Queens. Please, with the public services offices you can't loose your hope... good luck ya'll! read more

I've just returned from my second trip to the Brooklyn card replacement office. The first time, I went at 1 pm on a Monday. It was a circle of hell that I endured for three hours: two and a half of them spent in a hot, crowded downstairs holding pen, and a half hour upstairs in the office itself. It only took about five minutes at the window to find out that I didn't have my name-change papers in order. So, this time, with my appropriate documents, I returned. This time, I paid attention for once and dragged my ass down to Fulton around 7 am. Not only was there no holding pen, there was no real line to speak of. Even though it's a Monday morning, I was out within 30 minutes, total. Be advised, there is no food/drink allowed IN THE BUILDING. Seriously, nothing. Absurd. Anyway, this is me seconding the first review's advice: GO EARLY. read more

I hope I never need to visit again (no offense, SSA, I just hope I don't have to change my last name again) but they've now spoiled me for all other bureaucratic offices. read more

The person that processed my ss card was super nice and security and staf seemed in a good mood. they are incredibly strict about the type of documents they'll accept so make sure you have everything they ask for. read more

I went in this morning, expecting a bit of a wait since it was almost 11AM. The entire process, from getting my ticket to leaving the building, took less than 5 minutes. I was glad that I chose to complete the application before coming in, because I wouldn't have even had time to fill it out while waiting. The staff was so welcoming and was so helpful start from the security to the person who helps you at the counter , I had visited today to apply for my social security card and would like to mention about this lady in specifically (counter 26) Miss. Gabriela, she was so knowledgeable and accurate with the information and the turn around time was less than 15 minutes. This review is about the Social Security number I called to help my mother change her bank account for her monthly check deposit. The number I called was 1-800-772-1213. First of all they said I would have to hold on for 45 minutes or get a call back. I chose the call back and they did it in 50 minutes. The woman was very nasty with my mother who has just lost her husband and is 88 years old. First she questioned her about her identity and then insisted she had to come into the office. She cannot travel at all, she can hardly walk, much less wait for 3 hours in the office. read more

With some other reviews and comments talking about how long lines can get or how you may not even get in if you go later in the day, I arrived at 7:30am. This review is for the SS office located at 195 Montague Street, 7th FL, Bklyn, NY 11201. Not sure why the address is off... Very quick and orderly. We went in (did not have an appointment). We got a number, and waited an hour before we got called. This is an improvement considering other gov't places make you wait more than 2-3 hours.I arrived at 11am, got called at 11:55am, and got out before 1pm. The lady who helped us was nice and efficient. What we had to do was fairly complicated, so it took 45 minutes to complete. Over all, in and out in under 2 hours. I highly recommend this branch in Brooklyn! Just make sure to check the office hours. They close at noon on Wednesday. PS: Not sure, but I think they also help you apply for food stamps at this office (at least that's what I read on one of the signs posted). read more

I read all the requirements on socialsecurity.gov before actually going to 625 Fulton Street. I understand the whole "airport like" security check, it is a government building. That I won't complain. The security guards are not the one's who have bad behavior. It is their job to inspect. If you think they are mean and rude, then you're in for it when you actually go for the social security application. What's really hell are the clerks working behind the booths when filling out your info. My god I've never been treated so un-human like. My dad pressed the correct buttons when getting at ticket number to wait on line and the lady was screaming at him even though he was pressing everything right. She was, "YOUR WRONG. WRONG, YOU'RE DOING EVERYTHING WRONG." This was yelled is such a nasty tone. Then the witch behind the counter dealing with my dad was saying he didn't have enough IDs when we clearly read everything on the computer. On the website, certain ID's are AND/OR. Emphasizing the "OR" meaning we don't need both ID's. Either one will do because of that word "OR". The witch stared at the computer screen doing absolutely nothing. Just delaying the process. Finally she realized she was wrong and accepted the ID's in a very rude manner. I'm sorry but these people behind the booth's are just lucky to have a government jobs. Their job really isn't that hard. Just follow the damn guidelines and stick to your job. The waiting time really wasn't that bad. We were there for like an hour and 15 min. and that's only b/c it was right smack in the middle of the day (lunch time). I know if we went earlier it would've even faster. I would like to add I understand why some of the people behind the counter act so mean. They are probably dealing with many scammers and fakes so they may be trying to pry out info from these people. But jeez if you have the proper identification and it's valid what's the point of getting things so out of hand. It's like they want to argue with you. read more

Really wasn't bad at all! i arrived today Friday. I was waiting on line at 12:30. There was only three or four windows open for customer service. At 1pm I guess everyone returmed back from lunch. Maybe five to seven more windows opened up for service. The teller was nice, she even smiled. read more

This place was great! You expect government offices to be slow but I showed up, entered my name in the system, and was called to one of the windows within probably 5 or 6 minutes. I went in the middle of a weekday, so it may have been a less busy time than most. It helps to fill out the application ahead of time from the social security web site so you don't have to do it by hand while you're there in the office. read more

Perhaps the Social Security office at 154 Pierrepont St. is efficient but not the 7th floor Social Security office at 195 Montague. On Sept 8th at 3:14 at window A144 I was treated in an extremely rude manner by the service agent. She spoke over my voice when I tried to talk and was condescending by implying that I may not be trustworthy to apply to handle my elderly mother's social security issues. She also claimed I came too late and needed to come to the office before 9:00 to take care of this issue even though the office was still open for 45 more minutes. Coming to this office before 9:00 am would require me to take off from work. I wish I had thought to ask to speak to a manager. read more

like many other reviewers i cannot believe what just happened today. i was skeptic even reading all the good reviews. but it really is true. i came in mid day about 3pm, followed the yelp tips and took the elevator straight to the 6th floor, security checked my bag, punched in my SSN and grabbed a number, noticed about 30 windows but not all were working - assume somewhere around half that was. called up to a window and finished doing a name change in about 10 minutes total! very efficient and friendly. the clerk only asked for my marriage cert and the form. didnt even look at my ID and passport/etc. read more

Disappointed with the employee I interacted with. Needs to work on customer service skills. I had to initiate the greeting both initially and while leaving, or else she wouldn't have said a thing. Was providing my documents through the window and she had a very aggravated look on her face, and exclaimed rudely "I can't reach them!!" as if this was something I was supposed to know. Yet she had no problem pushing the same documents back to me through the window. read more

Be forewarned! When you go through "How to get a replacement social security card" on the SSA website, it directs Brooklyn residents to 195 Montague Street. Of course, that is not the place you need to go. Instead you walk 20 minutes to 625 Fulton Street (which is not marked as such, it's marked Fulton Mall). Apparently, I accepted the SSA website without noting the small link to "If you need a new card, click here." Expect unhappy, abrupt, and unpleasant workers, crowds, your number to be called (or not), heated exchanges between taxpayers and employees, etc. Once I got to the right office, I made it out in 38 minutes from the time I went through security. Fill your paperwork out before you get there. Dont bring food or drinks or you will have to throw them away. Don't even think of charging your cell phone - saw a woman almost kicked out for this grave offense. read more

VERY IMPORTANT: For cards, go to Pierrpont St entrance, and sixth floor. For all else, go to Montague and seventh floor. Found this out the hard way: waiting over an hour in the wrong place. I was dreading having to head over to the office to replace my card, and planned to get up early to arrive right at 7am. I overslept, and am glad I did, because I arrived around 8 am, and was out the door by 8:25. Everyone was helpful and friendly, there was no line, and the woman who helped me was patient and kind. Went today for a replacement card. Location is very convenient, front of the building is on Montague Street, across from the subway; not like their previous office on Fulton St, middle of nowhere, it's clean, orderly and the employees are nice. Got there at 1pm, no line, entered my ss number into a computer kiosk, got a ticket numbered 45. Saw on the board they were only up to 19. Thought for sure it would be a long wait. I was so wrong--the woman who helped me was friendly and efficient and I was out of there in 25 minutes. I was in shock in a good way, since when does a government office in huge city function so well? I'm really impressed and wish they were all as well run as this office. read more

Very efficient and fast! People who work behind the booths are pretty nice and helpful, but the security who man the entrance are far from nice! Especially the female security guards! They're pretty condescending towards anyone who doesn't speak English as their native language. Pretty good experience overall though, even if it's during tax season. read more

You'll get your actual card in the mail--according to the person I asked it arrives in 7-10 days although the form says up to two weeks. This office is too much, what a waste of government spending as I and a few people noticed. Could be a lot better, especially since its a government agency. Why do we have to stand in that long line and get searched, I mean its just a card place. The office on Montague Street doesn't have all of this. The upkept is lacking, terrible, dirty they need cleaners! I got my ticket, waited 30 minutes and got out. I was online for about an hour and a half! When they call your number, you can't hear whatsoever which is what happened to me, forcing me to stare at the screen like an owl the whole time. Needs much, much improvement. If your going to waste money on a place like this lacking in resources then I don't want to pay state or federal tax----in fact I want to keep my whole pay check. I never expected that I would be impressed by Social Security service. Today I went to change the name on my SS account and was pleasantly surprised. The entire visit from start to finish was 30 minutes. Everyone was polite and professional. I had arrived with two books and a newspaper (given my long waiting experience in previous SS offices). I arrived at the office at 3:25 on Tuesday Feb. 09, 2016 . I was there to apply for a social security number for my 2 year old who never had one. I kept pushing off my visit thinking it would be dreadful,until I read the reviews on this site. I was still unsure since I was only able to go in the afternoon. The office is very efficient, I was seen by a clerk 5 minutes after I walked in, it was a good thing I filled out my form in advance .It took about 10 minutes . I was told the card will arrive within 2 weeks, I got it 1 week later, and Monday was presidents day. All in all great experience. read more
