I was 3rd in line (I got there super early because I was gonna be a walk-in cause. I just need to change my name.) And as I'm in there, they said that they're not doing any more walk-ins and that they'll need to schedule us an appointment to come back and the only appointment that they had available for me was in July and my due. I did this mid May. So I know that they say they do walk-ins, but they actually don't. read more

I would strongly recommend going to any other location except this one. It took me 5 months to get an appointment. They only open a limited number each month to reduce their workload (this was told to me directly by someone on a Social Security call). Even after Social Security sent them a request requiring them to contact me within 7 days to schedule an available appointment, they never followed up. This is also the only location that refuses to assist with walk-in appointments. I don't understand how a government-run office can operate so poorly. read more

Easy Peasy, completed an application online, made an appointment online, called to verify that my child didn't need to come with me, arrived early, was called back 3 minutes after my scheduled appointment time, my docs were verified and I was out the door in 2 minutes. Easiest process ever. My only complaint was that I had to wait over 45 days for an appointment, but that wasn't the offices fault. read more

Great services but they request a lot of unnecessary things. I came to the one in a Manassas and they got my social in that same day!

This was a solid experience for what it was - got in and out of there much faster than expected! Was up here last month to get a new Social Security card (to replace an old, worn-out card I'd had for decades). Got there at around 8:45 am (15 minutes before the place opened) and there were already 20 or so people waiting outside. Place opened promptly at 9. Inside there was a single Social Security employee dressed like a security guard who also apparently doubled as the admin person; she explained the process to everyone in line and handed out the necessary social security form(s) to those needing to fill one out (the forms can also be filled out online ahead of time). The lady officer was pleasant and seemed very knowledgeable. I filled out the social security form while in line and waited about 30 minutes in line to get to a kiosk where you fill out a quick 5-6 question pre-questionnaire (basically outlining the reason why you are there), after which I was provided a ticket (similar to the DMV) to wait in a 2nd line for my number to be called. Only took 5-10 minutes for my number to be called. Was called to the back where I showed necessary ID and provided my completed social security form to another agent who then took a few minutes to complete processing of my form. After that I was told I could leave and that my replacement card would come within a couple weeks in a mail. (I did end up receiving it around 7 days or so later in the mail.) All in all a relatively painless process where I was in and out the door in 45 minutes, which was quicker than I expected going in. The key probably was getting there early. If I have to go back to Social Security again, wouldn't have a problem going back here! read more

My 78 year old mother who is in heart failure and has difficulty standing or walking for extended periods called the office because she had never gotten tax forms for her father who recently passed away. The office told her they didn't make appointments, that she would have to come in in-person, and that service was "first come, first served." She asked the person on the phone what she needed to bring with her and carefully made a check list of all the documents they told her to bring. She went over the list again with the representative and said she'd be coming in the next day. She got up at the crack of dawn to get there when the office opened. The waiting area was so crowded there were no seats and people were leaning against walls. She waited FIVE hours to be seen. During that time she said there was no functioning restroom available for those waiting, nor was there a water fountain. When someone finally saw her and she mentioned the FIVE HOUR wait the person said "well we had to have two different staff meetings, so everyone was busy with that and couldn't help anyone." Then the person proceeded to tell her that she didn't have all the documentation she needed, despite having brought everything she was told to bring and that she'd simply have to come back another time. Finally they said they could mail it, but only directly to my deceased grandfather, at his last documented address--a house that has now been sold and the post office forwarding has expired for. My mother then inquired if they even had the right address, as if they had mailed the tax form before, when the forwarding was active, she'd never gotten it. They refused to tell her what address they had on file, even as she stood there with all the paperwork showing her father is deceased and she is simply trying to complete his taxes for the last year of his life. They were unhelpful and downright rude to a very sick elderly woman. She got home feeling terrible, light headed, with her symptoms significantly worse. I understand the need to follow rules but there was no responsibilty taken for 1) the person telling her what to bring gave her an incorrect/incomplete list, 2) when she said she was coming in the next day they didn't happen to mention they were going to be spending much of that very day in internal meetings and not helping the public, 3) they really should have an ability to make appointments for the elderly and disabled so they don't have to wait in crowded waiting rooms without seats available for hours on end, 4) the general rudeness and complete lack of compassion or understanding from the staff, and 5) the lack of a functioning restroom. I can't believe our very high taxes pay these people to abuse the public like this. read more

Headache, unprofessional, and zero sense of serving the public. 1) the website doesn't list out the full package of materials required; 2) officer blamed on applicants for the officers' own mistake; 3) officer has no respect to the applicant's time (e.g., the officer asked the applicant to go get additional documents, but when the applicant came back to the office with documents in hand, the officer doesn't process the case but asked the applicant to reschedule an appointment a month later); 4) endless waiting. How could the tax payers' money go to these people who have no idea how to serve the public. Shame on it! read more

Lets get this straight: You are here if you need to be here. Nothing more, nothing less. My recommendation is to get here about 45-60 minutes before opening as people are in line already. I saw some people had foldable chairs at the front of the line and they do limit the amount of people who can come in. Parking is plentiful if you want to walk a bit farther. I believe it is next to a kindergarten so drive carefully in the area. The staff here is trying to push through the line so you are not really getting thorough work here, but they will try their best. Can't really blame the Social Security system. It isn't the staff's fault. It is really on the political affiliates on the federal level. There is the Reston station about 7 minutes drive from this location. The cell service is pretty weak here so if you have a spotty cell carrier, be careful since you might just stand in line in the heat for an hour without internet. This can get boring quickly. read more

Terrible. Each time I called, I waited, listening to horrible music, for 20 minutes. Then it would ring and I'm think great. But another voicemail saying they are helping others call back at a later time. WTH??? I know there have been cutbacks but I'm a government employee as well (and a military veteran) whose agency has layer off and we also are overwhelmed. But we still answer our phones. I say fire those who don't have the courtesy to answer. at least pause and say excuse me to the client they are assisting and ask the caller if they can wait and if not--take their number. Or, there should be a dial choice stating if you want to leave a callback number, press this number. No wonder government agencies have a bad reputation. read more

Great service. I have never been to any social security service location as great as the one in Reston. Staffs are friendly, polite, professional and helpful. This place is nice, clean and neat. very organized. i did the name change service, it ran smoothly and fast, only 30' to make it done. The officers who helped are nice and polite. The worst. Office is still handling issues by phone and the reps do not give accurate information. The suite is locked, so you can't use the dropbox. Instead, you have to hand your envelope of original documents to the guard, with no receipt in return. Yikes. If nothing else, why not put the dropbox outside the entrance? The location is covered. Oh, and the rep on the phone told me that documents are returned quickly. Later, he contradicted himself, saying they might hold onto documents for four weeks or more. Si which is it? read more

I am an Army veteran and married 46 yrs to a veteran! I've beven trying to get someone on the phone since November to get registered for Medicare. Seems it is somehow connected to our Tricare medical support. Ridiculous. Its now Jan '25. I was told in Nov when I got a Protective Filing Date that I would get a call within 2wks(never happened) and it would only require a brief phone questionnaire. No one is answering the phone. Currently on hold in 4th phone attempt. First call I was on hold 3hrs. Never had the call answered! Automated system. I believe no one is working in these offices or ignoring calls. SS managers MUST get ALL employees back to the offices!! Allowing them to stay home is now impacting my medical support thru Tricare and it shouldn't!! read more

Unlike the other review i found the office to be helpful. The officer you hand off documents to is an officer for ssa. They were only allowing a set number inside. So you begin by standing outside in a line. The officer calls in a few at a time, you use a computer to check in providing your ssn and reason for visit. The officer tells you where to sit ( six feet spacing). It seems you can fill out forms once you're there but better to bring it already filled in. The Reston location social security office is great. People are friendly and knowledgeable and very helpful.

It is ridiculous. I just need a replacement. card and the online system says it doesn't have my citizenship information and asked me to go to the nearby office to show my passport and update it. I have to wait for hours for this simple task that should just take a few minutes. Is it stuck in the 1930s? read more

Gives me a headache thinking about it. Called in November 23' for an appointment was told for what I needed a phone appointment so they put me on the schedule for December. Got the call was told I needed to provide further documentation and to simply drop it off in the Dropbox, so I did the following day. Weeks go by and I hear nothing no follow up at all. So I call in and calling is even worse because the line drops so you have to call in again to maybe speak to someone.when you finally reach someone there zero help. After months of calling I got someone to look at my case and was told they lost the documentation and to bring it back in. Still never receive any sort of follow up. I go into the office beginning of March was helped told the clerk my story he then goes to upper management he comes back apologizes for the inconvenience I've faced said you were approved and just wait on a letter to set it up. Here it is APRIL no letter no follow up nothing. I call in speak to someone of course they hang up. read more
