My wife and I have been to the Colonia Mexico location many times but had never tried the Centro location because parking is usually scarce. Since we were already heading that way, we took a slight detour to see if there might be an elusive parking spot on Calle 51. It wasn't looking too promising, but we lucked out and found a spot on the next block. When we entered the restaurant, we got the last available table. For those who don't know, the Centro location is small, with five small tables and a few seats at the counter. We ordered coffee. The menu is the same as the other location, so I went with my favorite: the omelette en costra, an omelette with cheese baked on the outside to make a nice crust, served with bacon, half an avocado, and their delicious sourdough toast. My wife chose the grilled cheese, which she said was divine. The coffee was also delicious. Service was very good overall, although our waiter never brought my wife water after she asked for a glass. It wasn't an inexpensive breakfast, but I think the prices were reasonable considering the quality. Our two dishes and two coffee drinks came to $550 MXN before tip. From Chicago, first time at SOCO today. Here are some thoughts: -We came in on a Sunday mid morning for brunch. There was a steady stream of internationals for the hour we were there, must be located near a larger hotel. -We ordered a chocolate croissant for an appetizer. It was good. -I ordered the chilaquiles with green salsa and chicken. I really enjoyed the chicken, but overall not great. -My wife ordered eggs and toast, not great. And they charged us extra for butter and jelly. -She had an Americano, I ordered a latte. Both were good. They forgot to bring hers out. We had heard of this restaurant prior to arriving in Merida. It was on our list for lunch so we took out exploring the city and walked to find this location. When we first walked in, we thought perhaps it was just a coffee and dessert type of establishment. Luckily, for us, the young lady stopped us as we went to leave and shared the menu with us.! SOCO is a beautiful, cozy (small) bakery and cafe in the heart of Merida (it has another location, but this one is just near Paseo de Montejo). It's beautiful inside, very charming and pretty. It's small but we were able to sit and enjoy our pastries inside when we visited on Saturday morning. They had a wonderful selection of pastries (a chocolate croissant for my husband and a pan de elote for me), but they also offer a full menu if you're hungry for more than pastry! We found Soco Merida on Instagram and made sure to track them down when we arrived in Merida. Fortunately, it was only a short walk from our Airbnb. It is a wonderful little local artisan bakery. Either you know it's there from their social media or are lucky enough to live close by. If you blink, you might miss it. Masks were required, temperatures were checked, and hand sanitizer was provided when you enter. We only purchased some items to take home but liked seeing that they limited the number of people dining in or buying baked goods. Everything was fresh and delicious. They always have a nice variety, and their seasonal items were too cute. The Conchas and Cinnamon Rolls were awesome. Their Chocolate Croissants were crisp, light, and buttery - but given how amazing Mexican Chocolate is, they could have used more Chocolate. The standout for me was their Almond Croissant. I had seen the photos and, based solely on the look, asked about one. it was not an item they were featuring that day, but they asked if I had a minute for them to make one. AWESOME customer service! The end product was an out of this world buttery Croissant FILLED with a sweet Cream Cheese filling; a little dab of the filling on the top held all of the beautiful Almond slices in place.
