The Polaris restaurant, "Mise en Place" (a French phrase defined by the Culinary Institute of…read moreAmerica as "everything in place"), is open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays during the school year. Mise en Place is operated by the students in the Chef Training program. Went the first time this school year and it exceeded my expectations. Last year had some bad service and not so great food. Decided to try again with a new student year. Sure glad I did! Ordered the salmon meal, $11. Includes a homemade roll, fresh vegetable, rice (I got double veg instead), iced tea, and a chocolate torte for dessert. Salmon had a maple whiskey sauce and it was grilled on a cedar plank - perfectly done.. I could eat it every day, enjoyed it that much. The massive Corned beef Reuben sandwich $8 was made with house cooked corned beef that was not fatty at all. They use a swirl rye bread and don't skimp on kraut or cheese. It came with a huge 1/2 dill pickle and potato salad. Also ordered the white truffle mac n cheese $11 topped with roasted winter vegetables which came with a roll, drink and dessert. Desserts are always a stand out here. Today was an apple struesel ala mode and a rich chocolate raspberry torte. Always save room for dessert - don't miss them! Weekly menu includes soups, sandwiches, salads, entrees and fantastic desserts. Chef O, the instructor for the program, previously worked at the Pomeroy House and you will see some of their recipes included in the menu rotation. For instance, the Pomeroy Salad is a staple. So coming here is a no brainer - get a gourmet meal at a Denny's price :) Notes: The restaurant is operated and staffed with students. Sometimes it can be a bit of a wait to get your meal. Plan accordingly, don't go if you are in a rush. Only open for lunch during the school year. Sometimes it is tough to get a table. Calling ahead for reservation is strongly suggested.. I feel this place is a hidden gem. Where else can you get a full lunch with beverage and dessert for $11? Reservations are highly recommended. I came here for two things today…read more #1: I got a haircut in Today's Image Salon. I explained the cut I wanted and showed my stylist/student some pictures. She discussed it with the instructor, who gave her some tips, they we got started. She first washed and conditioned my hair (my favorite part of going to the salon). She took her time with the cut and the instructor stopped by a few times to check her work along the way. She also dried and styled my hair. Not gonna lie, I was a little nervous with a student doing a type of cut she's never done before (a choppy layered complex cut) but the finished product exceeded my expectations! Everyone there was very professional and the salon was clean and organized. The instructor was very knowledgeable and helpful to all the students. I'll definitely be going back for more services! See the attached pic for hours and services :) #2: I ordered take out from the Center Cafe Restaurant (to pick up after my haircut, because the restaurant is only open til 1). All the food is prepped and made by the students. This is not my first time eating here and let me tell you, these young adults know what they're doing! I got the Chicken Bacon Pasta which was beyond pleasing to the tastebuds. Excellent mix of flavors that compliment each other. I also got the churros which they serve with a chocolate sauce...you can never go wrong with churros! Everything was delicious and I recommend anyone in the area to stop in sometime. You will not be disappointed! They are open for lunch (dine in or carry out) from 10:30a-1p most months during the school year.

This review is for the MCCC Cafe only…read more I have never been a student at this school, but I do have friends who have gone here or are attending currently and they quite like it. The cafe is where I was most impressed today. Tucked away in the corner of the main floor student common area, the cafe is easy to miss. But when you find it, you will be so glad. The restaurant is run by the culinary students who learn front of house skills, serving skills and, of course, cooking. From what I'm told, the menu changes seasonally and is prepared by the students. My friend Amanda and I enjoyed lunch there this afternoon. I started with a cup of the butternut squash soup, and my entree was the skirt steak BLT with fries. Amanda had the fiesta chicken, which came with a dessert that we shared: a trio of cupcakes and homemade vanilla bean ice cream. Our server, Hannah, was delightful and friendly, and shared with us that she was the one who made the ice cream today. Everything was so good that I spoke with one of the lead culinary instructors and told her how impressed I was. No offense, but I was expecting second rate food prepared by beginner students. What we received was better than most of the corporate diners in town! The only disappointing thing is that they are closed during the summer months. However, if they sold their key lime cupcake frosting by the vat, it would surely keep me happy 'til October.
