I received the most healing physical therapy after hip replacement surgery from Chris Taquino at SOL. Morgan the assistant therapist was also really great. I was given specific strengthening exercises. I went from pain and needing to hang on to someone besides using my cane to walk to walking without a cane and pain free. It took several weeks but Chris used physical techniques and massage to help improve my mobility tremendously. I could now raise my knee to my chest. I highly recommend SOL for physical therapy. My 80+ year-old Dad's life has been changed by Dr. Chris' regime of physical therapy and home exercises. Over the past fifty years, Dad has had other Physical Therapists but none that resulted in him following through with the home exercises. Discussing this as a family, we think it is partly because Dr. Chris sent him home with adult-type exercises involving apparatuses used for resistance and body weight exercises that they worked through at the office sessions. Dr. Chris gave him a pulley system that hooked to a closed door and two types of bands. These are Dad's to keep. Also included is a website login that Dad uses to log his reps. The site shows videos of all the exercises he has been assigned to do that week. The other piece is that he greatly enjoys how Dr. Chris works out with him. His encouragement and positivity is highly motivating. Everyone at the office has been warm, kind, and upbeat. My parents love the vibe. read more

Chris Taquino is simply the best PT in Santa Cruz. Having had various injuries and surgeries over the course of my 25 years of living there, I was sent to just about every PT clinic in town. While many of the corporate-run and healthcare system-associated 'PT mills' had some very nice, knowledgeable people in them, they cannot give the same 1-on-1 care that Chris does. SOL is not a clinic where you will get a 'different exercise therapist' every time. There is ONE really good one. Chris is a master PT who knows quite a few modalities and is constantly upping his knowledge base. He works on you himself. EVERY TIME you go in. I no longer live in SC, but felt compelled to write this review because a good friend recently asked me 'Who would you go to as an older person having knee surgery?' After a recent ice hockey injury and an MRI that showed damage to my ACL along with tears to both my MCL and meniscus, I was depressed with my orthopedic surgeon's recommendation to go under the knife. I was now living in Sun Valley, Idaho, but decided to contact SOL Santa Cruz who had treated me for some other sports related injuries and chiropractic needs before I moved. I was pleasantly surprised that they were willing to review my MRI and discuss their findings with me over the phone. After the phone consult, I packed my bag and headed to SOL Santa Cruz with newfound hope that might be able to avoid surgery. Dr. Lisa Gibson, Dr. Tammara Moore and Dr. Karen Roitz all contributed to putting me back together. For starters, they were accurate in their assessment--I could rehabilitate my leg and avoid surgery! After 3 sessions I am walking without a brace or a limp. The equipment and techniques they used were state of the art--SpiderTech Tape and Lasers! While at SOL Santa Cruz, I also had my back adjusted which was completely out of whack as a result walking differently due to my knee injury. Additionally, I had been suffering from severe jaw discomfort since November 2009 which they also treated. Honestly, I didn't know there was such a thing as physical therapy for the jaw. Now, I can actually chew without wincing. With a well defined home and gym exercise plan for my knee, jaw and back, SOL Santa Cruz sent me packing back to Idaho with a huge smile on my face and the image of riding my mountain bike when the snow melts. I had a bad fall at work over the summer and in just one 30 minute treatment Dr. Cristina Diaz adjusted my spine and did some deep tissue manipulation that relieved my pain from the fall and also addressed an issue in another area of my spine that had been bothering me for weeks. The whole staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and eager to help. I can see why this is the office that treats many of the Roller Derby girls in Santa Cruz. They are dedicated to getting their patients back to very active lifestyles. I recommend SOL Santa Cruz to anyone with sports injuries or who is recovering from joint surgery. SOL in Santa Cruz is top notch for PT and I *highly* recommend going there. I worked with Chris Taquino twice a week for several months. Here is what he's done for me: #1 - Four weeks before a 50-mile ultramarathon, my IT band was out of control in pain. So much it hurt to walk up stairs. In just 4 weeks, Chris worked his shaman magic and not only did I finish the 50-miler, but I haven't had any IT band issues since. He knows how our bodies are supposed to work and quickly targets the weakest link. #2 - Two months after the 50-miler and recovering naturally, I developed some tenderness underneath both knees. I could barely run 2-3 miles before it would flair up. Back to working with Chris and in just 3 weeks, I set off to run the Death Valley marathon and had an unexpected decent time of 4hr38min. I took it a bit easy not knowing how my knees would hold up... long story short, not once did my knees hurt and they STILL don't weeks after that race. I feared I was going to be out of commission for months... and now I'm back to signing up for races! I've been to other PT places where they just target the symptom. Chris knows his stuff, spends the time to understand your activities, and works backwards to find the root cause(s) of the problems at hand. He put together a regimen of Graston, ART, IF, light therapy, and targeted stretch plans that in the right combination move mountains. Can I hear an 'Amen' and a "Halleluja!"? Earlier this year I returned to SOL (had a great experience in 2011 with an Achilies issue) to trouble shoot recurring hip injuries when I tried to take up running. The full body functionality assessment Chris Taquino worked me through highlighted lack of core/glute strength/utilization and overuse of my lower quads. (My knees indeed were crunchy!) A second appointment with Tammara Moore added a few more ideas for a training program. I jumped into 5 weeks of training with Heather on Kettlebell/TRX and home exercises and I've continued training on my own. Last weekend I hiked over 11 miles in Yosemite and this weekend ran 8 miles in the Wharf to Wharf. The bod is working great, I am feeling great, and am excited to keep up the core work in Tamara and Heather's Kettlebell classes. Thank you SOL PT. This place is fantastic. I had a nagging hamstring injury that hadn't been responding to PT at the other places I had tried, and after working with Chris for 3 months, I'm now injury free. Chris is an excellent physical therapist -- friendly, professional, and very good at innovative problem-solving for persistent injuries. He really listens, and thinks about how your body is doing week to week, and makes sure that you're making progress. And I found the ART (Active Release Techniques) that they do as part of the practice there to be extremely effective at getting rid of injuries where there's build-up of scar tissue. Also, Marcus is an excellent trainer -- he was always willing to take the time to make sure everything was completely clear. He helped me build crucial core strength that I hope will keep me from getting re-injured in the future. And everyone there is very friendly -- I'd recommend this place to anyone. read more

Chris Taquino, Doctor of Physical Therapy is a wizard! Here's the short version of the miraculous healing he orchestrated for me. Of course he will just call it science, but there have been plenty of licensed folks over the past 15 years who didn't pinpoint and solve my aching legs. The serious leg pain was at the point where my calves were so tight all the time I could barely walk 1/2 block before I had to stop to let the pain subside. I'd had massage and plenty of it, I'd been Rolfed, my MD had ordered ultrasound for possible atherosclerosis. Nothing, nothing, nothing. Here I am only 65 years old, and I can't go for a walk on the beach, and no one can help me. They just throw up their hands. In talking on the phone with an Ayurvedic practitioner in Denver, who recommended trying Active Release Technique, I finally found Dr Chris Taquino at SOL Santa Cruz. And within 4 sessions I am tromping the beaches and forests again! I'm crying with happiness, relief and release and I want to tell everyone about this miracle worker! I sent my husband to him who has been suffering since he was 20 from a motorcycle accident, and also had old crippling pain. We both thought we would suffer with our disabilities to the grave. Wow, Brandon is a badass. I came in here with some muscle pain on my left that was impacting my sports performance while bicycle riding. Brandon quickly figured out everything and began by doing a lot of massage and then some electric shock therapy and also performing "adjustments" to my vertebrae with his pure physical strength. Drs. Roitz and Moore are amazing! Dr. Roitz is the best chiropractor anywhere and Dr. Moore is a truly amazing and gifted physical therapist. Together they make a great team. I came into their office with two herniated discs and two neuro consult recommendations for disc replacement. Before I came I was told by multiple doctors that I would never be able to surf or ski again and that my sporting life was basically at an end. I surf almost every day. And so this was devastating news to say the least. Plus, at 38, I am not exactly old. In less than six months, without surgery, I have been able to not only get back in the water and surf. But, I surf stronger now than I ever have before. Drs. Roitz and Moore's attention to detail and caring motivation have really helped to engage me in my own recovery. And, I found that their incredible knowledge about how our bodies work, break, and heal to be beyond top notch. I recommend them to every one I know with injuries like mine. If it wasn't for them, I'd still be recovering from a surgery that might not have worked. Definitely check them out. I'd say they were the best in Santa Cruz. I went to SOL for the first time around July 2011 to deal with some pretty serious soft tissue damage from a motorcycle accident. I was struck by how friendly the staff was. Thanks to their hard work (often going above and beyond) I was soon walking again and able to start training in martial arts (albeit somewhat restricted due to the damage) I'm back again after some surgery, and I feel like the quality of care has only improved with time. The physical therapist, Chris, isn't just trying to get me walking. He's trying to get me back to full function (before the accident) so I can get my life (and martial arts) back on track. Dr. Karen Roitz will put you back together! I am a skeptic at heart and just until about 6 months ago, I had never been to a chiropractor, until seeing Dr. Karen Roitz. At the end of January, I injured my shoulder and my entire back and neck seized up. Unsure of what Dr. Roitz could do, but at the recommendation of many friends, I went to Dr. Roitz for treatment. Because it was my first time to a chiropractor, I was a little nervous and apprehensive. Dr. Roitz talked me through the process of what she was doing and put me at ease. She worked on my back, neck, and shoulder and eased my tension immediately. She has since been helping me work through my shoulder injury and increase my range of motion, which is nearly back to where I was before my injury. Just before a big ski holiday, I had cracked ribs, and went to Karen Roitz. We did a number of light therapy sessions, packed in over a week. The personal care I have been receiving from Chris Taquino and his staff has been amazing. After breaking my tibia, fibula, and talus bones in my ankle, my recovery has been challenging both mentally and physically. Love this place! In the beginning of May 2016 I came across this place on yelp when I started to have really bad sciatica after moving. It was so bad that it hurt to walk and I couldn't even bend over. I literally thought I would never recover from this. Karen was really knowledgeable and helped temporarily ease the pain with each visit. I ended up going to get an MRI to see what was causing it and we found out that I had some herniated discs. She then referred me to the PT, Chris, in July 2016. Chris was also very knowledgeable and knew exactly what we would have to do to help my back. Within about two months of weekly PT sessions I was absolutely pain free. I was so happy to have healed so fast. I'm still working on healing these herniated discs but I am beyond happy that I have no pain and can move around as if I never had an injury. I have been fighting back pain since 2007 , I started getting treatment trough workers comp, and I have visited a lot of doctors on different areas and some of those doctors are like 5 minutes appointment to prescribe drugs only ,with 2 back surgery already , the last place I attended for physical therapy is most definitely the best, sol is complete different than other places plus they charge way less than Palo alto almost half of the fraction, Chris start with massages and listen to you , them he send you for more treatment with the rest of his team which are also amazing , you easy spend 1 hour here while at other places no more than 15 minutes, I highly recommend this place for me the best place for therapy , they have massage and chiropractic . read more

Dr. Brandon Thomas is an incredible Doctor. I started seeing him to address back and neck pain I experienced from studying and working on my lap top. Not only has Dr. Thomas eliminated my pain but he has also given me the tools to prevent injuries in the first place.
