Since it was built in 1895, this facility has been in continuous service to our country…read more First as Life Saving Station #36, then as Coast Guard Station #132 and now as American Legion Post 331. It is on the State and National Historic Registries and serves additionally as a museum honoring the history of the Life Saving Service, the Coast Guard and our military. It is the oldest building in Stone Harbor and can be visited during the summer months daily except for Sunday and Wednesday from 10am until 2pm and of course on NJ Lighthouse Challenge weekend. We got here on the Saturday of Lighthouse Challenge weekend about a half an hour before they closed at 6pm and were gassed by this point so unfortunately we didn't give this place the once over that it deserved. The downstairs is a bizarre mix of active Legion Hall things along with some very beautiful paintings/murals on the walls which the artist's interpretation of various shipwreck scenarios with life saving equipment in use. They also had a few tables with postcards, Legion and Lighthouse memorabilia for sale. At some point we'll come back to see the second floor and to spend more time.

"A beach is a place where a man can feel He's the only soul…read morein the world that's real" (The Who) We saw quite a few historical markers along the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk, and this one at Rehoboth Avenue gives you an overview of the town's history. It traces the town's timeline from its 1873 establishment and its growth into the 1890's as an East coast resort destination. The inscription reads: "On January 27, 1873, the "Rehoboth Beach Camp Meeting Association of the Methodist Episcopal Church" was incorporated by the Delaware legislature for the purpose of establishing "a permanent camp meeting ground and Christian sea-side resort." With the coming of the railroad in 1878, the growth of the community was accelerated. On March 19, 1891, an act was passed incorporating the municipality as Cape Henlopen City. The name was formally changed to Rehoboth in 1893. Since its founding the City of Rehoboth Beach has continued to be one of the most popular resorts on the Atlantic coast, attracting thousands of visitors each year."

It was freezing and windy and raining the entire weekend we were in town so we didn't have stellar weather to enjoy the beach and all the amenities of the city but the people were friendly and parking was easy enough so we enjoyed ourselves and plan to come back again in the fall if we're able.

Delaware does a good job with their markers. Many of them are located quite close to the actual…read moresite and unlike some states, they have plenty of text on the sign to let you know what's going on. However, I do think my home state of North Carolina does better with the essays on the website that provide way more detail. This marker points out a local citizen who graduated from West Point and led much of the Union Army during the Civil War. The marker has the same text on both sides, though one is rather corroded. It reads, "Born in Georgetown on July 1, 1833, Torbert attended local schools prior to his appointment to the West Point Class of 1855. After the outbreak of the Civil War he rose rapidly in rank, serving as a regimental and brigade commander of New Jersey troops, then as Commander of the 1st Cavalry Division of the Army of the Potomac, and finally as Commander of Cavalry, Army of the Shenandoah. He was breveted as Major-General for his meritorious service. In 1869 Torbert was appointed by President Grant as Minister to San Salvador. He later served as Consul to Cuba and France. A shipwreck off the coast of Florida led to his death in 1880." This is marker number SC-96 and was erected in 1993 by the Delaware State Archives. This marker is somewhat faded, standing quite high on its post. It points out some of the 18th…read morecentury religious history of the area. There is space at the side of the road to stop. It reads, "Organized in 1838, a Methodist Society then called the "Coolspring Methodist Episcopal Meeting House" began holding meetings in a schoolhouse situated on a nearby farm owned by Mrs. Jane Warrington. Trustees were elected and incorporated "to build White's Chapel" named for Reverend Henry White, a presiding Elder who served the preaching circuit continuously until 1842. A quarter acre of land for the church site was donated by Samuel Paynter in 1839, and a meeting house measuring 18 x 24 feet was constructed later that same year. After this first structure was destroyed by fire circa 1871, additional adjacent land was purchased from Alfred C. Warrington in 1872 and a new church measuring 30 x 45 feet was constructed within the present-day church. The present church was constructed and dedicated in 1921 by District Superintendent W.R. Mowbray. Together with Conley's United Methodist Church, Zion United Methodist Church, and three other now-defunct churches, White's Chapel comprised of Nassau Circuit which operated until the early 1930s. As a member of the Peninsula-Delaware Conference, White's Chapel continues to serve the spiritual needs of its surrounding community." With the marker is a beautiful, if small, chapel. Beside it is a cemetery that is in excellent condition. It is marker number SC-235 and it was erected in 2014 by the Delaware Public Archives. This library is on the small and cozy side, but it's a great place to hide away on a hot summer…read moreday. It houses bathrooms, A/C, Wi-Fi, a large selection of reading materials, and several seating areas including four comfy armchairs. Best of all, they have a huge selection of DVDs that spans multiple shelves and ranges from older films to ones as recent as last year. There's also a separate shelf for newly released movies that came out this year. Fortunately, we were able to get library cards simply by giving the librarian our IDs and an email confirmation of the place we were staying at. I guess that makes sense when most of your summer clientele are tourists. We come to Cape May once a year, so we'll be hitting this library up all the time.

They do not have a drop off lane but there is a mailbox out front. They were closed when I stopped in but I was still able to drop off the postcards and they were delivered.
