Revolution Rail is featured on the Cape May Ferry's TVs, and it's such a fun thing to do when you visit Cape May. The location is convenient right at the Cape May Welcome Center, and the ferry provides a shuttle to this location which makes it perfect for day trippers. My daughter and I pedaled a 2-seater, but there are quads too. To start, we were given some easy instructions on how to operate the rail-bike which glides on a track no longer in use. Once we pedaled to the end of the line, we learned about the history of the line and the canal there, particularly its importance during World War II. When we pedaled back, we stopped at The Nature Conservancy's Garrett Family Preserve and learned about its history along with all the wildlife in Cape May. At both stops, we learned so many fascinating facts from our knowledgeable guides! Plus, I was told the guides don't always say the same thing, so it's different if you decide to go multiple times. They even take a photo of you on your rail-bike. In total, it was about 90 minutes and an easy ride depending on how fast you pedal. It was such a fun experience that we know we want to do it again. read more

We were feeling a little adventurous today so we made a reservation with @RevRailCo in @capemay It was a two mile trek on a special rail rider bike. The track is the abandoned Reading Railroad (from Monopoly). Our tour guides were very informative and into it and their names all started with "J". We had a beautiful day and a lovely time with our first experience with Revolution Rail. We arrived close to an hour early, but were quickly greeted and checked-in and were told we could walk around town and just be back by a certain time. We saw the previous group all returning and once they turned the bikes around, we were ready to load and get moving along. We had 3 people for our quad bike. Only one person controls the brake, which on the quad bikes, was the person sitting in the back right seat. It's a flat 2-mile ride out. You don't stop until you get to the end of those 2-miles, at which time, you get off your bikes and get a little lesson about the railroad and the area while they are turning the bikes around. On the 2-mile ride back, you stop once to walk around The Nature Conservancy and you pause once to get your picture take using your camera/phone. The guides were all friendly. There is a wire rack on the back of the bike where you can store your personal belongings. I would suggest bring a bag/backpack to store things like your keys, phones, wallets so that they don't fall out of your pockets while cycling. You can also store water bottles as well. I enjoyed this SO much! I never done something like this before; it was so different. I barely exercise, definitely not in the greatest shape and I was not winded at all. It's 4 miles total and I could have gone even longer. They made 2 stops and it was nice to hear about the history behind each stop. The guides were so knowledgable and friendly. You can bring drinks or snacks with you (most people did but I chose not to). I would DEFINITELY recommend this place and would check it out again in our locations they have. read more

Fun family activity in the heart of Cape May. Not too strenuous. It a fast 2 miles out and back with two pit stops. First pit stop at the canal with a brief, funny, informative, historic talk. This takes place while employees turn the rail bikes around. Second pit stop is at the Garrett Family preserve. What a beautiful spot! Five miles of well maintained, and blazed, hiking trails. Theresa a gazebo with picnic tables. Plenty of parking. Plaques to read about the preserve and an audio self guided tour. Hop back on the rails and head back to the train station! Employees are funny, friendly, and they offer to take photos for you. There are 3-4 time slots a day, and moonlight options, too. We all commented we wished it were a longer trip! read more

First, check in was quick and easy. The people who worked there including the guides were very nice and friendly people. Even the other riders were great, everyone there seemed to truly enjoy it. The peddling was mostly easy but I would be lying if I said we " felt it" afterwards. I dont think I would have wanted to do more than the 4 miles. The only negative thing I could say? The price was a little high because there wasn't much " nature" involved. The shrubbery was really overgrown and there was not much to see. So you really have to go for what it is, a nice bike ride with friends. There are restrooms for your use, and you do get to stop twice to rest and learn a few facts about the area. We've done some other Rail Biking, but this Moonlight Tour is SO COOL!! Maybe it's just because I'm a night owl, ha, but seeing terrain by a bright full moon is captivating! We repeated the ride the next day and got to see the parts that were too dark to see the night before. I own a recumbent tricycle, but Cape May would be a super-easy ride for almost anyone (and a good introduction) because it is so flat and short (pretty different than the one in the Adirondacks we did the week before!). Visited on July 2, 2024. Did the double railbike. There's also quads. Lasted about 90 minutes. Been meaning to check this out for awhile. Very easy "ride". As long as 1 person is pedaling, the railbikes practically move themselves. You really felt like you were part of nature. They made 2 stops and it was nice to hear about the history behind each stop. Really enjoyed learning about the monarch butterflies! Didn't realize so many migratory birds pass through Cape May in the fall. It was cool to have cars stop for us as one of the staff members busted out a stop sign in the middle of the railroad track crossing. LOL read more

One of the great novelty tourist things that has sprung up out of nowhere the last few years is railbiking. Don't know what this is? It looks something like this: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Valley_Railroad_Rail_Bike_at_Goodspeed_Station_October_2019.jpg There are a few companies that are larger (tongue and cheek because even the "large" ones are still small with only a few locations) and some tourist railroads do it in house. Overall though, most of the tourist railroads that host this are either abandoned, don't offer a lot of rides or they are in the middle of nowhere. The process here is very simple. Go to the Revolution Rail website (www.revrail.com), find a location, book a date/time, read the FAQ, pay and you're done. Day of in Cape May you show up at the old train station now bus station/visitors center and RR has their check in area to the far left inside, sign a waiver and that's it. You ride out two miles to the Cape May Canal where the railbikes are turned around and you ride back. While waiting for the bikes to get turned around the staff will give you some wiki style facts/trivia regarding some of the history of the area. On the way back you make a brief stop at the Garrett Family Preserve where you get a brief overview of how/why the preserve was set up and how it helps the large annual bird/insect migration that occurs in the area. A few pros and cons with Revolution Rail in Cape May: As everybody knows, parking in Cape May is horrific. You've got a pay lot across the street from the welcome station. Download the parking app, pay on their site or have a literal roll of quarters because you'll need it. If that lot is full, I guess keep on searching. If you know your history, trains haven't been run here in a decade and unless a literal miracle occurs they never will again. Why? When you get to the turn around point you'll see a swing bridge over the Cape May Canal. The bridge was rendered inoperable by Hurricane Sandy a decade ago. Even before that time, train service to Cape May by Cape May Seashore Lines was spotty at best. The scenery really isn't that scenic. Two abandoned rail cars and past that it's mostly just overgrown trees, weeds, bush and shrubs. The best part is the Garrett Family Preserve. That area is beautiful and more than makes up for the weeds. The ride compared to other locations that RR offers or other companies offer is on the short side. If the Cape May Canal swing bridge was operable the ride here would be exponentially longer. Door to door here was about 85 minutes. Let me finish by saying that all of the staff we encountered were great and common sense safety is definitely a solid theme. Rail Bikes are one of those weird things where you need to remember that it's all about the experience and overall the experience here is great. Bring a water bottle, sunscreen, bug spray and get on your bikes and ride. read more

This was a cool experience. I would like to try this in their other locations though, because there wasn't much to see on this one. I mean the scenery wasn't anything spectacular, but I still had a great time. It's not much of a workout, if you're worried about that. They have 2-seaters and 4-seaters. I assume if somebody isn't peddling then it might be more workout for the others. There weren't any hills or anything to make it strenuous though, so this is a great activity no matter your physical activity level. It was extremely hot the day we went, but this offered a nice breeze and didn't make it so hot. There are baskets in the back of each bike so you can bring drinks, such as water or alcohol (I saw some people drinking seltzers). We learned a little bit of history about the railway we were on, and then about monarch butterflies at the conservatory. Nothing was super eye opening or incredible about the history we learned or the scenery, but I still recommend this if you're looking for something to do aside from the beaches and wineries. I would definitely still try them in other states! read more

This was really a cool experience. The only problem I had is that when I called ahead and asked if this is doable for my overweight 13 year old son they said it is very easy. When I got there it was not very easy. My chubby little boy could hardly peddle so I had to do all the work and carry the weight of both of us. By the time we got to the bridge I had to switch seats with my husband because my legs couldn't handle the weight load and it was his turn. They need to be more clear that this activity is not good for anyone out of shape. The only way I could cheer him up afterwards was to get him a hotdog at hotdog Tommy's down the street. read more

This was by far the best surprise of our short trip to Cape May. We met people when we first got down who recommended the tour and we had no idea that it was even down here. It is something that we had always wanted to do but thought that it was only in the mountains, so you could imagine our excitement when we found out we could add it to our tour de Cape May. The guides were wonderful, funny, knowledgeable, helpful, and gracious. My only wish is that it was longer, but unless you think you could perro fast enough to not sink into the canal the 4 mile round trip is the max. The stop at the Garrett Nature Preserve was a real hidden gem and we will definitely make sure to do the 5 mile hike through the preserve on our next trip. We have done rail riding before in New York, and honestly this one in Caple May was very disappointing. I have to say the staff was very nice. The actual ride itself is only 3 3/4 miles long one way, which is very short and it goes very quickly. They take up more time giving history of the railroad and then birdwatching in the sanctuary (bring bug spray!). Which is nice enough, but not what we signed up for and spent our money on. And be careful of the chains that don't have chain guards. I got grease on my pants when climbing in and out of the cart. Our friend's chain came off during the ride and the staff didn't have anything to help clean the grease off his hands. We did not deem this to be a worthwhile activity. read more

Love Revolution Rail (CAPE MAY,NJ LOCATION)! What a unique experience during a return visit to one of our favorite vacation spots. We first met AL at the Welcome Center, then Jesse and his fellow Rail instructors. We boarded our Quad Rail seats; recumbent style with pedals that my party buckled up in, as all were instructed. Sitting in the back, I was the operator of the brake. We pedaled 2 miles up and 2 miles back passing a vast scenic preserved land thanks in large part to the Garrett Family (who refused to sell their land) and, ultimately, The Nature Conservancy. There are an array of Monarchs, Egrets, insects and various other birds. (No, Mom. No two night minimum here.) History lectures were abundant presented by our guides. Bravo to the staff! In the mood for something a bit different while spending time in beautiful Cape May, America's First Seaside Resort? Hop on the pedal powered rail cars for a scenic ride through the salt marsh, past ponds and over some creeks and streams. You'll ride along the rail tracks of the Cape May Seashore Lines on your way to the swing bridge at the canal, which separates Cape Island from the mainland. Enjoy your stop at the Nature Conservancy's Garrett Family Preserve along Cape Island Creek. The wildflowers are beautiful as are the ospreys and herons. Raptors can be seen during the Autumn migration period. This is a wonderful location to hike the trails, picnic, photograph or paint, as you view the birds and butterflies. This activity is not strenuous at all but does require some physical activity, similar to riding a bicycle over flat terrain. Bring along a water bottle and dress for the weather to be comfortable. Some very nice breezes in the open areas during the Summer months. Spring and Autumn are beautiful! What a fun thing to do at the shore! Great activity for families to break up a beach vaca. Our guides we're really great and knowledgeable. The bikes are really easy to do even for small kids. They were very big on safety and the orientation, although short, was easy to follow and made for a great ride. Our one complaint was that the scenery was mainly trees when we thought we would see some birds. It may be the wrong time of year that we went or that the trail was really dense in the summer. But, it inspired us to check out revolution rail in its other locations in the future! Highly recommend. read more

Not worth the money AT ALL. 95% of the trip is pedaling on rails that run thru weeds and small trees on both sides. NOTHING TO SEE. Our young 'guide' with her cohort and a second car with teens set off at a blistering pace. We were third in line and even though we bike most of the time around cape may, had no chance of keeping up and they soon disappeared down the tracks. So, now, we were essentially the pace car. Not the responsibility we wanted but we maintained a nice pace and finally reached the end of the line where they had stopped at a river of sorts. I told her that she shouldn't take off like that as she is basically responsible for the group. But, being a millennial & knowing it all, she insisted that everyone could pedal at their own pace WHICH SHE SHOULD HAVE SET, NOT US. She talked a few minutes about the river while her helpers turned the cars around. We set back off, her now being in the back and a very nice pace was now maintained. We stopped at a nature conservancy site where she said we could walk a bit and maybe get an 'attitude adjustment'. Snarky little twit. She talked again about butterflies for a few minutes and we walked back to the 'train' on a trail thru a field of weeds. Near the end, there is an open marsh where you can stop for them to take your pic so it appears like you actually saw something beside a mile of weeds. Honestly, don't waste your money. Rent a bike.
