There have been giant holes in our hearts ever since he died. This is one of the reasons we always participate in "Dining Out For Life." The Angels took such good care of him before he passed, oh so many years ago. A simple check on him and the dropping off of food made me feel better when I couldn't be there. He would get a kick out of the idea that the ball-n-chain and I were out eating and drinking beer and toasting his name. "Drink to me" were Pablo Picasso's last words. Thomas was an artist and would have been down with that. There are always people at the event who have envelopes so you can drop off an extra bit of money for the cause. I highly encourage it. Every year, thousands of children "age out" of the Foster Care system in this country without ever…read moreknowing the love and security of a permanent, adoptive family. Since 1983, The Adoption Exchange (TAE) an Aurora, CO based non-profit organization has connected more than 8,000 adoptive parents and waiting children. During the past eleven years, I have been honored to volunteer locally and nationally with TAE; here are some of the events I've enjoyed the most: - Monopoly Tournament: a fun day of fundraising held in different Las Vegas Strip properties annually. You can buy in to play the classic board game, and raise funds for the local chapter of TAE; it is surprising how competitive this gets! - 'A Day for Wednesday's Child' an annual day-long fund drive (held in Las Vegas at KLAS-TV) to fund Camp To-Belong, a non-profit summer camp which unites siblings separated by Foster Care for a week of bonding and fun. I've answered phones as a volunteer; one can simply phone in and make a pledge. The station provides phone banks, drinks, snacks, and coverage to update the viewers via the Chryon crawl on progress of the NV TAE chapter's largest annual fundraiser. - Fantasy Ball: aptly named, held annually in Denver, CO this is the largest fundraiser on TAE's national calendar; a gala dinner, dancing, raffles, and a wide array of Silent Auction items are featured in this fancy and fabulous for-a-great-cause evening. You can participate by buying tickets, a table, a sponsorship, or by donating items to the Silent Auction. - NV's Annual Golf Classic "Fore" Kids: Held at Silverstone Golf Club, I've served on the planning committee, golfed, and solicited Silent Auction items. This is a great day on the links directly benefiting children in NV. If events aren't your forte, you can make a donation, volunteer in the office, and more! Metro volunteers is a great way to get involved in your community. They have a simple registration…read morethat can be done on line. There are many volunteer projects that are noncommittal. Some places I have found want you to commit to a certain number of hours a week, but through Metro, you can do a project here and a project there. Be warned though, some of the projects book super fast, so if you see one your interested in sign up quickly and in advance. Working with Metro, I have had the opportunity to meet many new people and have a sense of fulfillment. It feels great to help, and meet new people while you're doing it!

I road tripped to Colorado in August 2025 to see family and to get rid of one of my (far too many)…read morestorage units. Once I opened the storage unit and saw how much stuff I didn't remember putting in it 3 years ago including a couple of large boxes of clothes. I do a lot of shopping at Goodwill but I prefer to donate my clothes to organizations like Clothes To Kids of Denver. I called them up and asked what kind of clothes they accepted. Note: they take all season clothes, shoes, hats, and accessories. That was great news because I had all of those things to donate including a few purses and a couple of bags. The staff were so friendly and helpful. They were deep into a major reorganization of all of the clothing donations which was massive! Denver: take your gently used clothing to Clothes To Kids it will go a long way to helping kids, teens, and adults get back on their feet.

The people running the program are pretty friendly, knowledgable and entrepreneurial minded…read more However, I went to the week-long training class and I was kind of disappointed. They advertised this program as a program that helps you land the job you want, however it just turned out to be another generic job-readiness program that just puts you in whatever job they have available rather than what career you want and what your background is actually is. With the high-energy entrepreneurial people running the program, you would think they would have stronger career advice to give and be able to help you with a more individualized approach, but unfortunately they do not. The training class was pretty fun and engaging for the most part, and the teacher Cedric was a great speaker. However, what I had an issue with was how a huge percentage of the class was spent training us on warehouse safety and how to use a forklift. I'm sure that's great for people who actually want to work in a warehouse, but for everyone else it's a waste of time (so my recommendation is for them to hold the forklift training during a different time for the people who want it). I know for a fact that I'm never in a million years going to work a blue-collar job. I found it a bit insulting, because they get a lot of people signed up for the program from homeless shelters, rehab clinics, and those previously incarcerated, so it came across like they were talking down to us and assuming warehouse work is the only thing we would be qualified for or willing to do. And from my experience, warehouse jobs are pretty in-demand and they hire pretty much anyone desperate for a job. My feedback for this program would be to stick to their word about helping us land in the career we like, and do a better job meeting everyone where they're at in their career.
