I have been a client of Tony DeMartile at his Aveda Sole' salon since 2003. He has never disappointed. He is the best hairstylist for curly hair that I have ever encountered. I always go away with a cut that lasts and lasts and lasts. This time I haven't seen him in six months. I have let my hair grow out till it's out of control but it still shows the style he created. Tony is the best! Also, his new location is so much fun! It's nestled into Saint Anthony's turnaround shop in Orinda that Tony single-handedly turned into a glorious goi d art treasure hunt. Relax. I was going to visit a friend and I had some time to kill before she got home from work. It had been two years since I got a haircut (I intentionally grow it out to donate). Getting a haircut seemed like a fun a productive way to spend my free time. I know nothing about the area, but I stumbled upon Sole's yelp page and it said that they were offering $20 off to book with Chelsea. I called and without asking, was told the Chelsea was one of the two stylists available during the date and time I requested. Perfect! Guy, who answered the phone was friendly and accommodating and asked a lot of questions about what I wanted to ensure I would have a good experience. It made me feel like they were very professional, and he really talked Chelsea up, saying she was super experienced, but just new to this particular salon, hence the yelp promo. He also gave clear parking instructions on the phone, which I appreciated. The atmosphere was really clean and welcoming, they immediately offered me water or tea. Chelsea was great. I wasn't particular about what exactly I wanted, but she listened and made suggestions and I totally trust her judgement. She was really calculated and took her time with me. I am sure I was her last appointment of the day, but I didn't feel rushed at all. She genuinely wanted to do a great job and I looked and felt great at the end of it. Like I said, I don't live in the area and I only get my hair cut once every two years, but I would still highly recommend this place and Chelsea. Ashley is amazing. I went in to get a trim and get my dirty blonde hair bleached to platinum and she exceeded all of my expectations. Ashley knows what she's doing because my hair is very fine and it takes a very talented stylist to be able to deal with it. Every time I ask someone to "trim" my hair they always end up taking way too much off, but not Ashley. She took only the dead ends off and left me feeling fine, fresh and long. Took advantage of the half off facial today. Carmen was great, who would have thought in the back of this busy salon there is a hidden spa! I got all the fluff and stuff you'd get at a day spa. Foot rub, soothing music, aroma therapeutic head, shoulder, upper back and face massage. Everything about the facial was great, my only complaint is the extractions. I think my favorite way to be extracted is with plain ol' tissue. That extracting tool hurts too much and I still feel like there are still a lot of clogged pores. My face wasn't glowing, I was blotchy red. Like I got beat up. I went from oh so soothing spa treatment to - make it stop, you're hurting me! I know thats how most good facials are and Carmen did tell me to let her know if the pressure was too much. But I wanted her to get up in there, thoroughly. Stress is bad for you. Bad for your heart. For your mental health. For your skin. My skin was looking a bit congested. Stress combined with my junk food eating habits didn't help either. The Green Science facial is a signature facial here. Aveda products are exclusively used and Aveda not only cares about your skin, but their products are kind to the environment as well. I had an hour long facial that started with a 10 min. warm foot soak, now, how many facials start like this? I'm immediately impressed! The warm neutral brown colors in the room, Carmen's calming voice and the plush soft bed put me in a relaxed state. This was only made better by a head, neck and shoulder massage. Aaaah..... The facial. I love being under the steamer while having the chamomile enzyme mask on. Preparing the pores for extractions is easy, having the actual extractions is hard. (Girls, you all know the pain we have to go through to be beautiful) Carmen had gentle hands with moderate pressure, she uses the actual blackhead remover tool so if you're used to extractions with tissue, well, this will probably hurt more. The Green Science line is specifically formulated by Aveda for lifting, firming and reducing lines on your skin. This facial left me refreshed and my skin feeling new again. Organic argan oil is a key ingredient in this line (per their website it's found in their creme, professional masque and eye serum) which has been long used in Morocco as an anti-aging product. I'm giving Carmen two thumbs up. She has specials on Wednesdays and Thursdays for 60 minute facials at only $53, that's a steal! Don't let the bad take over, Carmen is your partner in crime in restoring the good in your life. read more

I have been a customer at sole salon for two years and have referred many people. I always had a good experience until recently. I came in to do balayage, hair dresser messed up got a re-do then messed up again. So it had been three time..If you are a salon you should make sure your hair stylists are trained enough to do hair or to not say yes before they commit. My hair came out ORANGE with spots of PEACH! Hideous I wanted to cry. Didn't make a big fuss because she said she would call me the next day talk to the manager see what they can do, I trusted her because we actually had a good relationship. She didn't call me the next day and I had to call the salon the next morning. It was so ugly I couldn't even go out in public I had to get it done that daybut she was booked and they made it seem like they were accommodating me by letting me go in two days later...if they messed up they need to take ownership and fix their mistakes asap andmake time for me like a good business should.. I didn't even speak to the manager once, super unprofessional. All together what I learned from them is that they do not value loyal customers that is why they always have a Groupon they bring in new customers like crazy. And myself and my family will not be spending our time or money there. It upsets me they were that unappreciative and rude. And my hair was chemically processed and damaged AND THEY DONT CARE. I went and got it fixed at the Paul Mitchell salon in Oakland and it looks beautiful now. read more

My 100th review for the "100 Yelp Reviews Challenge" to help make the East Bay the 'Yelpiest Community.' I had plans to get a haircut this evening in Hayward but decided to go shopping and grab a drink with Megan Z. instead. Just browsing, I stopped into this salon to see how much haircuts start and they said $40. My usual Stylist in Berkeley left Panache and charged $60. Haircuts start at $70 at Shed near my work so $40 was great. I asked to what appointments they have available the following day and they had an opening for a 'model' appointment...and for $20! This is an Aveda location and I have two friends studying with their institute in San Francisco. I don't think they'll butcher my hair. My appointment was with Taylor. I was cutting my hair very short and she gave me some options, her opinion but in the end she let me guide her as to just how short I wanted to go. She knows that when it's cut too short, it can't be fixed and she wanted me to be happy with my haircut, not devastated. I appreciate that. She was very nice and we chatted about a variety of topics. I took advantage of the botanical treatment when you check in on Yelp and it's always nice to have an added benefit to your visit. Love being a Yelper. I will be back to see Taylor. read more

When my main stylist had to go home sick, I was set up for a cut with Ashley who is a newer stylist and is trying to build up her clientele. I can def recommend her. I was pleasantly surprised with the cuteness and quality of the cut by her...a different type than I'm used to and I loved it. She did alot of thinning with a razor, and my curls are so much sassier and my hair feels so soft and light. I'd definitely return to Ashley, she's another talented hairstylist. Especially since my current regular is so booked up months out, sometimes I just can't get in to see her! So good to have a good backup, or 2nd "regular" even. For years I've been getting a haircut every six weeks from Natalie and I've been very pleased. I can't believe I've forgotten to write a nice review. The place is classy, everyone is totally cool and friendly. I'm sure I could get my hair cut cheaper but Natalie always does a great job. The $55 (I think it just went up to $60?) haircut includes a scalp massage with scented oil and a shampoo and conditioning with high class stuff. First thing first, I am copying and pasting part of the same review that is posted on other facial salons: Since my previous esthetician retired, I have been comparing techniques and extreme attention to every facial salon I've experienced. Looks like the 4.5-star Yelp review for Sole Salon and Spa couldn't match up. Will not recommend to experienced facial clients. Maybe suitable for beginners who don't know what to expect or careless clients who just needs a quick facial fix. Onto my review: Since being on a hunt for the next esthetician I can become a loyal client to, I searched up Sole Salon and Spa to good reviews for Krystal. Decided to book with her. Upon booking my appt, Krystal's name did not appear on the list of estheticians. I went back into the reviews and realized it was from 2017 and older. After taking a deep breath, I told myself to give the new person the benefit of the doubt that she knew what she was doing since she's certified. Arriving 20 minutes for my appt thinking there may be paperwork to fill out, salon wasn't open. Services start at 11AM on a Sunday, so I guess they really will not open until 11AM - and indeed it did. As soon as I saw the lights go on, I pranced out of my VIP parking to get a head start. Quickly introduced to Isabelle. She asked me for my skin care regimen and I told her my routine. She said I knew what I was doing and am using the right products. Kudos to me! Things started great! She explained to me what she was doing and the reasons. My main concern for the visit was acne and unclogging my pores. Along came the extractions, she did a good job at extracting the big, red, visible acne, but failed to even touch the closed comedones that plagued the perimeter of my face (chin, temples, and forehead). However, nose looked substantially clearer. Massage pressure was perfect for my light pressure need. Very glad Isabelle didn't massage my scalp with oil, which is what I dislike from other places. She massaged my scalp through the cotton headband I was wearing to prevent my hair from getting in the way of the facial. After the session, thought things went well. Checked out and happily went about my merry way to shop. After I concluded shopping and was on my way out, I quickly glanced into a nearby mirror at Sephora to see how my face turned out. To my disbelief, I noticed a glob of sunscreen underneath my nose. Horrified, I quickly grabbed a tissue from their makeup stand to wipe it off. Very nice, young girl, but I wish Isabelle could have paid more attention to evening out the product, but sadly she failed to perform so. Next morning, I had a bunch of whiteheads come to the surface which popped on its own upon washing my face. Thankfully I didn't purchase the series package as I always want to know how the first session will turn out. Looks like I will not be going back to Sole as much as the interior decor was beautiful and the facial bed was heated. read more

Just months away from moving out of state and I've finally found a salon I like! WHY??? When I saw the big windows that look out on to Bay Street, I was a little concerned that I would be getting my hair done on display. However, that's not the case at all. They have products in the front and the salon is in the back. It's clean and posh but not pretentious. They're also quick to offer something to drink and give you a comfortable robe to wear. When I called to book an appointment I asked for whoever was available and I'm so happy that I got Jennifer. She's really nice, confident (so important!) and helped me figure out a flattering cut. When I get my haircut I like to be able to see a big difference, so I was going for something dramatic. I wanted something piece-y and edgy. I expressed all that and then Jennifer showed me some photos of what she was envisioning. My hair is naturally wavy and thick, so she stuck with something that would look good straightened or natural. The other staff were kind as well, and it was an environment where you could tell that they genuinely liked each other. They have lots of products to buy there, but this is the first salon I've been to where nothing was pushed on me at all. Jennifer told me what she used when I asked, but didn't try to push the sale, only told me the name and why she likes it. I'm so pleased with this salon! read more

I came here after my stylist left the salon I used to go to in Temescal. I was paying $40 for an amazing cut and friendly service, but opted to try Solé after seeing the Yelp! coupon. I still paid $90 for a haircut when everything was said and done, and somehow it still looks choppy and unkept. Mind you, my hair is well past my shoulders, and very straight. In the past I have said it's almost impossible to mess up a haircut for my type of hair. In fact, I almost think I could cut it myself. $90 is just outrageous for the amount of hair that I get taken off and the level of difficulty for the type of hair I have. I always ask my stylists to ensure my long, layered cut is wispy and delicate at the ends, otherwise it looks bulky and heavy. Well, it looks bulky and heavy. Either this stylist didn't understand my instructions or she isn't skilled enough to know the difference. At a $90 price point I feel like these requests should almost be obvious. Unfortunately, it's difficult to notice the strange layers and blunt cuts when you have a professional blow out. It's not until you rewash your hair that you realize you look a bit like a 4 year old who got scissor happy when mom wasn't looking. I am only giving 3 stars because the people were very friendly and the location was fine. I would go back if I knew I could get what I wanted but that doesn't seem likely. read more

How long have I been a client of this salon now? Almost 7 years?! I've been around the block with salons, but I keep coming back to this one. I've been getting my cuts with Alicia. She was doing a beautiful job with my long layers, and then when I decided to take the leap and go for a bob earlier this year, she was my girl too. :) The bob was super cute and very well done, but now that I've done it, I'm ready for my long hair back now (I think I'm partial). But she's awesome no matter what length of hair you're cutting. Mary Ella has been doing my color. I've done a few versions of red now, and some ombre/ballayage work, and it's turned out beautiful every time. And she did colors on me with both long and short hair, so she's very versatile. I'm trying to decide if I should go with a more bold color next time... I always end up defaulting to some version of red. :) And facials by both Carmen and Krystal are wonderful and super relaxing. :) Overall, Sole Salon is fantastic. Everyone who works there is great. Tony is super friendly and knowledgeable and very confident in all of his staff. My only suggestion: Sole Salon needs an online appointment system. :) read more

Shes done my two-toned hair (black and platinum blonde, half and half, and the most perfect black panel in my platinum blonde bangs) for quite some time and her precision is spot on. I have been going to Sole for over a couple of years and have to say that it is by far one of the BEST places to get your hair done AND your brows waxed in the area.! After many a bad hair related accidents with other so-called "great" salons (ie Panache and sone other pretentious place I can't recall at the moment, but it's a good thing I have an edit option) I was recommened to Sole by my roomie and when she walked in, looking so fine, I decided I needed to up my vavoom value and strolled in the next week..... My first stylist was fabulous, but alas he is leaving...however, I have had the pleasure of having been cut and styled by Tracy who is amazing! Everytime without fail, I walk in and tell her what I am looking for, and also entrust my head in her hands. Now, that is a lot to say about a person because would you trust your hair in even your best friend's hands?!?!? My point EXACTLY. And she never ever disappoints. She is funny and artsy and knows what she is doing. Plus, she managed to take my not so subtle crooked and mismatched eyebrows and give them some life and room to grow. The whole waxing experience didn't leave me whimpering in pain or cursing the fact that I needed to be waxed, and I can safely say that I walk out of Sole feeling like a sex goddess every time. My roomie went here and liked it, so recommended it to me (and believe me, she is picky like me :P), specifically Delia. So, considering I go to a different hairstylist every time (there's so many out there, you gotta check 'em all out right?) I decided to give this place a try. I went for a trim and dye, and Delia did her thang with all natural ingredients (I swear the crap in the box for $5 I used to use in hs isn't good for your head). I liked the overall result, but as usual, I focus a lot on the service and all-around experience I get in the places I check out. So Delia's obviously social, we talk about random yet essential topics of discussion ranging from our careers, love lives, and of course, our hair (who else better to ask about it?). Let's just say she inspired and confirmed my beliefs of wanting to live life to its fullest-in any aspect of our lives...from those 3 topics and others, we have the choice to live a passionate and this-is-flippin'-amazing type of lifestyle. You can't let the ephemeral notion of security entice you into staying in anything, whether it's an alright career, an unhealthy relationship, etc. Btw we didn't really go in depth on all this, it's mostly me just reflecting. Life's too short to live a crappy one, is the overall gist here. So anyhows, she remembered her convos with my roomie too (which was a month or so ago) and that's what it's all about...connecting and bonding with your hairstylist (like in those chick flick movies). She told me to come back in a few months to redye but I don't like doing it that often because of the cost and damage, but she said their products don't damage and I could just redye the top part for less. Krystal Gragg is an excellent and talented esthetician. Not only that, but her energy is very calm and healing. I have just finished a series of three facials with her, and had to sign up for another series because I can't imagine not continuing to spoil myself. My combination skin looks so much better since I've been seeing Krystal. She has been really helpful with recommendations for products as well without being pushy or "salesy" which is refreshing. I like the Sole salon very much in general; easy parking, friendly and helpful staff, and the atmosphere is bright, uplifting and serene. Service is stellar all around.I love Aveda products as well. Just adding my 5-stars to the many existing 5-star experiences on this Yelp page. Used my Groupon for a haircut with Ashley. Was in and out in 40 minutes for my choppy pixie cut without feeling rushed. In classic Aveda style, I was greeted, offered tea or water (the tea is hot, slightly sweet, and lovely on a cool rainy day). Then, I removed my coat, donned the anorak-drapeover, and was led towards the back to go over what I wanted. I am notoriously difficult to comprehend when I'm describing what I want. I tend to use emotional terms like how the hair should make me feel (hah!) rather than how I actually want it cut, mostly bc I suck at describing things and I don't know the proper terminology. I think I used the words "choppy, textured, pixie, messy, fun" and "it annoys me when it grows out." Riiiiight. Whatever, Ashley read my mind and I love my new cut. It looks textured and just how I wanted even though I really didn't say anything. The facilites are clean, across from the Gap (yay sales!), and service is efficient. I didn't even use my entire $50 groupon; I actually have $15 left for my next cut! Score. Other fun perks... $25 for referral (see above), $25 on your birthday (a steal when a cut is $35), open 7 days a week. EEEEEeeee! I love this place! I had such a fantastic experience. I've never been to a salon that massages your head and shoulders. Being the massage whore that I am, I welcomed the massage with opened arms. It could have been a bit more deep tissue but whatever, it was still a massage! Jazlyn took care of me. She was so nice and did a great job with my hair. I've never had a blow out in my life and the outcome was so beautiful. I've never seen my hair so full and bouncy in my life! The haircut was $35- but Jaz did some upselling and sold hair products to me... we'll I just hhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaavvvvvvvveee to recreate this do at home. I ened up spending a little bit too much with the products included. BUT it was worth it! I already booked a wash/blow-out for next month. I gots to look gooooodd for a wedding I'm going to!! Sole is a salon that I never noticed despite of going to the shopping area almost every week. After weeks of searching for a new hair place, I was surprised to find out about Sole. I have to say I'm not picky with my hairstyle but I'm always afraid of wasting my money to a really bad haircut/color. Based on the reviews, I decided to make an appt with Ben. He was very nice, accommodating and really knew what he was doing. I also loved the fact that he doesn't talk a lot.... I'm not a chatty person and that he doesn't up sell much. I just had my second appt and already made the next one. I am so glad I found my new hair place (and it's only 5 mins away from my home!). I also have to say that the place is very clean and everyone else. The one thing I have to add: maybe parking validation?? read more

This was the worst salon experience I've ever had. First, all Bay Street businesses are supposed to be dog-friendly (I know this because a security guard there told me that the businesses there have to sign an agreement that they will allow dogs) and this place wouldn't let me bring my dog because there might be people there that are allergic. However, there wasn't even anybody else in the salon! Second, my hair stylist, Lexy, used some aroma therapy in my hair that I didn't ask for. It smelled nice when she was doing it, but she failed to tell me that the smell wouldn't go away for days, even after I washed my hair. She should have warned me that this would be a lingering smell and asked if I wanted her to do it anyway. (Not a horrible thing, but I wanted to mention it.) Last, but not least, Lexy cut my bangs WAY TOO SHORT. When I said that it was too short, she said that we had agreed on eyebrows. They are about 3/4 of an inch ABOVE my eyebrows when dry, barely grazing the top of the highest part of my eyebrows when pressed on my forehead with my eyebrows raised. That does not mean "eyebrows" to me and it is unacceptable that somebody would cut over an inch off somebody's bangs without confirming that they wanted super short bangs. They weren't even cut evenly! And then to top it off, she said that they would grow out in a few days. That is just LYING. Although Lexy doesn't seem like a bad person, she is obviously not a very experienced hair stylist. She also wouldn't put layers in my hair when I asked for them because my hair was "too thin", but after she cut the bottoms of my layers off said "now your hair feels really thick!" I don't really care whether or not I have layers, but this was another obvious sign of inexperience. (My hair is thick enough that a regular hair band will only go around it twice.) I went to sole' salon in desperate need of some pampering and I got everything that I wanted and more! My esthetician was Isabelle and she went above and beyond to give me the perfect experience. She is very knowledgeable in skin care and educated me on the aveda products she used on me. I would definitely recommend seeing Isabelle for a facial, you won't regret it! read more

Alicia is the BEST! I've been going to Sole for about 5 years now and absolutely love it. A friend suggested Alicia after I needed a new hairstylist, and I'm so happy she did. Alicia is such an amazing stylist. I feel like she can work wonders with my hair. I am always so happy with my cut. Alicia is also so easy to talk to and just all around, a really nice person. I also started going to Krystal this year for lash tinting. She does an excellent job. I feel like she's a bit of a perfectionist, which I love because my lashes always end up looking fantastic. I started getting them done just to cut down on my use of make up throughout the week. It last for about a month, which is great. Krystal is also really kind and easy to talk to. read more

Just got back from an amazing and relaxing facial at Sole Salon. My skin is so hydrated and glowing! Isabel, my esthetician was very knowledgeable. I asked her a bunch of questions about my skin and she gave me a few product and cleansing technique pointers. I told her that I don't do well with extractions so she catered the facial for my needs. The facial started off with some aromatherapy, then a cleansing followed by 2 masks. After the mask she used a cold rose quartz roller that felt absolutely amazing. Isabelle gave me a facial.....I now have a huge scab on my face from her attempting to extract a blackhead. She kept trying to extract it and now I have an abrasion that I'm praying doesn't scar. I almost want to show her the wound she caused on my face......never again will I be getting a facial at this salon! read more

Today I was scheduled for a massage and body treatment/wrap at day spa in Oakland. I failed to consider that my hair would get stiff in it from my spa experience, but that I wouldn't want to shower afterwards and negate the positive effects of the body treatment. I called Solé and the receptionist was able to hook me up with Donna for a shampoo/blow dry. Donna took several minutes to talk to me about my hair, my color, my washing and styling regimen, and how I'd like it styled. She then gave me a lovely scalp massage in the chair before guiding me to the shampoo station. Another scalp massage followed. I like that Donna didn't use a lot of heat to dry my fair, and as a result, brittle hair. It probably took her longer and so I appreciate the extra attention given. My hair turned out beautifully. This is a very special salon where your hair will receive fabulous service and perhaps more importantly, your soul will feel pampered and treasured, I have been having my hair styled here for almost five years, and realized I hadn't yet added a Yelp review. My hair was really long when I first started visiting Solé, and Mary Ella took excellent care of its color and cut, so that I always felt like I looked absolutely gorgeous. She also did some incredible up-dos for those special occasions, and I felt like a movie start! After wearing my hair long for about 10 years, I started feeling ready for a change, and Mary Ella helped me figure out what to do next. We ended up with a fabulous and very short cut, but she psychologically eased me into it so that I didn't feel the culture shock! I feel so relaxed in Mary Ella's hands -- I know she is going to work her magic on me, and I always leave feeling pretty. Speaking of hands, one of my favorite parts of the service is when she gives me her signature hand massage while my color is processing -- it is so relaxing and dissolves all the stress I hold. I enjoy visiting the salon - love seeing the latest colors and hair and beauty products from the full Aveda line. I love that they are all-natural and made of the finest ingredients. I have been using them exclusively for many years, and I think my hair and skin show the results. I have been seeing Mary Ella, who is excellent, but I also love seeing the happy customers who have had their hair done by the other stylists at the end of their visits! Three things to keep in mind: 1) Book your appointment as far in advance as possible -- the stylists book up quickly, and although walk-ins can be accommodated, you may not have the stylist you are used to seeing. 2) If you don't park in the parking structure, pay attention to the meters -- they are monitored 24/7 (I recommend the structure so you don't have to worry... otherwise, set the timer on your phone so you don't forget). 3) Bring cash for the tip - it is always appreciated. read more
