Tucked away along Covent Garden, the Tanning Shop was the solution. I dropped in for a single tan and purchased a single packet of lotion and it only set me back about £10 or so, not pricey at all. The gentleman working there was very helpful, explaining the intensity of the booths and whatnot and advised me on how much time I should spend tanning. He didn't have me fill out any disclaimer forms, which I found a little bit surprising. They do have stand-up booths at this location and the radio in the booth allows you pass the time by listening to techno while you tan. I like that I didn't have to pay extra for the little wink eye-covers because I've been to salons where they do charge for them. It was not the most luxurious of salons, but the Tanning Shop was clean and served its purpose.

She showed me to the room and asked me to get ready. As I took my clothes off I thought to myself: don't let her kind smile deceive you Alex, she is about to cause you some serious pain. She entered and soon after Operation Hair Elimination started. Now I'm not saying I didn't feel anything; I was stone cold sober remember. But Balo had this incredible way of making me think about everything else but that hot way on my skin. During the session we talked about Camden Market, the history of Afghanistan and the different dialect of Nigeria (thank you Wikipedia for making me sound like an intellectual!) and before I knew it, it was over! Having booked through one of those special offer vouchers, in all honesty I wasn't expecting too much, but the competent and friendly beauty therapist, Adele, quickly set that record straight. We began with the Sole Delight treatment, and what a delight. I have to admit that I tend to neglect my tootsies at this time of year, really only paying attention to them in the summer, but after a word or two from Adele about maintaining the expert work that she had done, I will now extend my before bed routine of applying cuticle oil to my finger nails to my somewhat neglected toes too. The body treatment is deserving of praise too. My body was buffed and vigorously scrubbed with the delicious smelling salt product all over, leaving my skin positively glowing and incredibly soft and silky to the touch. The facilities are clean and the ambiance in the room; soothing music, and very soft lighting during the body scrub treatment made for complete relaxation. And for us, there are spray tans. And if you find yourself in East London, the spray tan of your dreams lives at Tao Hair & Beauty. A tastefully low key salon just off Great Eastern Street, Tao Hair & Beauty doesn't look like much from the outside. However, as you enter you'll find a very nice shop with friendly staff and great treatments, hardwood floors, super clean surfaces and a variety of options to make you prettier. My kind of place. I can do without the pomp and circumstance that some Shoreditch spas seem to revel in, so Tao is right up my alley and also close to home. Demet was my spray tanner and she was both professional and friendly. This salon uses St. Tropez system which is a good one that looks pretty natural (not orange). The spray tanning area is set up in one of the rooms downstairs and is clean and private. Never spray tanned before? Here are my top tips: Step-by-step guide to airbrush tanning: 1. Make an appointment. 2. Day of or night before: EXFOLIATE. 3. Show up with NO makeup, lotions, deodorant, etc. 4. Go to Tao. 5. Go into room. 6. Strip to your knickers (ok, its a bit personal, get over it). 7. Demet (or other tech) applies airbrush tan, in your selected shade. 8. Dry a bit. 9. Dry a bit more. 10. No exercising or ahem...other sweaty activities for 6-8 hours. Plan accordingly. 11. Shower at least 8 hours later. Bronzer washes off. 12. Beautiful (fake) tan that lasts for a week+ and all of your friends will wonder when you have the time to sunbathe. 13. Remember to moisturize to keep your tan long and strong. 14. Repeat. At 24.99, it's a bargain. I will now look sun-kissed for a week instead of fried to a crisp. Also, no wrinkles! Hasta luego, I'm off to Mexico!
