My partner and I stopped in here for lunch during a day trip to Cork. We were craving good fries and needed something hearty, so burgers and fries it was. We got here shortly after they opened and there were already three tables full and more filled up by the time we placed our orders. We each got a brownie milkshake. I got the stack burger and my partner got the SOB burger and we split some fries. The milkshake were...weird? They tasted like they had onion ring batter in them - something we both concluded separately until I voiced it and my partner agreed. They were also fairly watery and not very thick. Maybe milkshakes are different in the states, but this one was just odd. I couldn't stop drinking it because I just couldn't understand it. The burgers and fries were all good. The burgers were juicy and had just the right proportion of toppings to meat and bun. The fries were crispy and fluffy, just how I like them. The bathrooms are down a flight of stairs and around a corner. Two private stalls. The toilet paper in the stall I used was a brand new roll and hadn't been fed through the dispenser before it was closed and locked, so I had to fight with it for a good five minutes before I could get enough toilet paper to do my business. Our server was friendly and attentive. He took our orders quickly and we got our food pretty fast. It took a bit to get the bill but by that point they were pretty busy so it's understandable. Overall this was a decent burger place. I wouldn't recommend the milkshakes since ours were so weird, but the rest was enjoyable. read more

Ok. Where do we start?! This place was effing delicious. After a long day, we wanted good food and had little expectations. Son of the Bun is modern and lively, the place was full when we arrived around 8pm. Our servers were all so nice and we loved their shirts that all had puns like, "Girls just want to have Bun", "Bun DMC", "Bun in a million". We ordered a the chicken and waffle burger, and the bbq onion rings burger. Both were absolutely amazing, mouth-watering good. We ordered the skinny fries on the side and asked for the chipotle mayo. Their local beer was Franciscan Red and I ordered a Pimm's (which is like a strawberry/orange sangria), both also delicious. The decor was also new and modern, and we really liked their music and energy overall. Unfortunately, we did not save room for dessert and hope to make it back someday. Four of us were on the Paddywagon tour of Cork, Ireland. The bus driver highly recommended lunch at Son of a Bun. He raved about the burgers there. We walked ten minutes from our drop off and found the restaurant and menu. Their motto is, "Flippin' good burgers." By the way, they have one of the coolest business cards I've ever seen, please view attached photos. Inside, it's hipster sheikh and the waiters have a friendly, energetic vibe. Our waiter happily brought us whatever we requested, including extra ice and lemon. I ordered "The One" burger for 11 euros. It's a six ounce patty with crispy fried sweet red peppers, white onion, streaky bacon (marbled with fat), sautéed mushrooms, double American cheese and sriracha mayo. The burger comes with a side of home cut (with potato peel) or skinny fries, seasoned in rosemary sea salt upon request. I got the home fries without sea salt. I also ordered the onion bites, which were deep fried, perfectly battered pieces of onion. To drink, I got hot green tea, which I quickly Americanized, hence the aforementioned ice. Let me just say, the portions are extremely generous. The burger entered my top five list, probably due to the juicy, delicious Irish beef. To quote their menu, "The meat for our burgers is sourced locally from West Cork and is 100% pure aged Aberdeen Angus beef. All our beef is minced on-site daily..." All the burger toppings perfectly complemented the taste, with those fried red peppers adding the perfect hint of delicate sweetness. A shiny, beautiful buttery brown brioche bun (hence the name of the restaurant) topped this magnificent burger. The fries and onion bites were some of the best I've ever had. My only tiny complaint would have been the green tea, it was too light and watery and could have used another tea bag. All four of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The moral of the story is: wherever you are, listen to your tour guide. I just wished we had a Son of a Bun in New Mexico. read more

I like good burgers and I cannot lie! And Son of a Bun has em! I had done a little food research before heading to Ireland and Son of a Bun hit my radar. Luckily it was on my hotel block so once I passed by and saw a little guy with a cheesy french fry bowl I knew I would be eating there at some point on my trip and I was not disappointed! I had the S.O.B. burger. It was large and in charge! Had to be held together with a very food pick! I had the SOB sauce on the side as a pre-caution but once I tasted it went right onto the burger! Lots of onion strings! My daughter had a kids's cheeseburger and loved it. My mother had a regular cheeseburger- no complaints! The sweet potato fries were DELICIOUS! And salty (my fav!) The décor is clean and modern. Take a walk to the toilets (as they say in IE) and check out all the art on the way there. Nice subtle ode to Rory Gallagher too! Had a cheeseburger and it was very gamey tasting beef. I'm from America but I had other burgers since I've been in the UK and they did not taste like this, so it's not unique to the country, just this place. If I could give 6 stars I absolutely would!! I loved the feel of the restaurant and the music selection. I ordered the veggie burger which is a portobello mushroom and it was mind blowingly delicious!! I felt bad for the 3 that were with me that had beef burgers, lol, although they all loved their burgers too. And if you don't eat meat and do t like mushrooms they also offer a falafel burger and you can substitute that on any of the menu choices. We also shared some cheese fries which were amazing and I'm glad we opted to share them because the burgers are quite big. My first meal at Cork! I wasn't hungry but knew I had to eat something. You can substitute a falafel patty for any of the burgers. I regret not doing so. I ordered the special which had a mac and cheese patty and grilled chicken. I ordered it mainly for the mac and cheese patty which was grand. I discharged most of the bread. During lunch time, your burger will come with free fries. They have thick home fries and skinny fries. I chose the home fries and eh I don't really like fries. I drowned them in ketchup per usual. The portions are huge! I was stuffed and didn't want to be. There are tons of burger joints within a few steps apart. I chose this restaurant because of the name. What a cool and vibrant burger bar! The atmosphere exudes fun and we had an excellent meal here with spot on, friendly service. The burgers are very good. The main drawback is the health and safety rules which means serving the burgers well done (no pink allowed) but that aside, they manage to not overcook the meat too much and there is enough fat in their grind that it maintains a great level of juiciness. I had the chilli burger which was spicy. Even as someone who can handle heat, I found this too hot. There were bites that were fine and then a bit into a chilli, seeds and all, that burnt your mouth off which was unnecessary. The fries are great. Get the angry ones! read more

This place and the new BBQ place next door are really making MacCurtain street into a place to be. It's was absolutely packed when I went and I had to wait for a table for 30mins. Which was totally cool as I drank a delicious glass of wine while I waited. The meat is so local and good that all burgers come pink unless you ask otherwise. Delicious. If you live in, or are lucky enough to visit Cork in 2016, your New Year's resolution should be to visit Son of A Bun! Only open a few months, there's no doubt the owners have already solidified their spot at the top of Cork's dining food chain. A step way above a traditional chipper, Son of a Bun has done a great job replicating a traditional American burger joint, and there's no doubt it's the best burger I've found in my time in Ireland (which is extensive!) The place was jam packed- it was New Year's Eve, but something tells me the growing popularity of this location makes the crowd fairly common. The hostess politely took our name and gave us an almost to the minute prediction of when we'd be seated. There's a nice bar to sit and get a drink while you're waiting if that's you decide that's how you want to spend your time waiting for table. Once seated, even with the big crowd, service was excellent, and it wasn't long until we were all enjoying our burgers- two kids cheeseburgers, a Classic, a Cheese and a Stack. The recommended preparation has it delivered "pink in the middle"- but they had no problem accommodating one request for well done. All were well presented with the necessary condiments, and as hard as it is to satisfy a 12 year old, an 8 year old and a 4 year old, the chef exceeded all expectations! With orders of cheese fries, skinny fries and sweet potato fries everyone's plate was more than full! Desserts followed, all simple but a satisfying way to end the meal, and exactly what you'd expect from a burger joint. Looking forward to being back soon! read more
