Hi folks. About 10 years ago I had Sonoma Woodcraft build me a wall bed with table plus some cabinets and then a few years later had them build me an added cabinet. Wonderful, wonderful work from Jake and crew. I'm now wondering if the company is still in business as phone number just takes message and seems auto chat type without any personal wording. Amazing service. The story: About 10 months after installation, one of the support slats cracked. It did not affect the performance in any way, but it was noisy! It might have been due to a hidden fault in the wood. Or it might have been because I am using a very thin (temporary) mattress. In any event, I contacted Greg at Sonoma Woodcraft. And the very next time Greg was down in the City (which happened to be 4 days later), he brought a replacement slat to my house and installed it. No charge. Outstanding customer service and pride in their product! We opted to relocate our well-loved murphy bed to a new home. We disassembled, transported and reassembled it ourselves. Seemed straightforward enough however, upon the first test, the struts didnt seem to want to work. The bed made more creaking noises than we remember, plus it took much more force to make the bed even wiggle while it was in its upright position, let alone move normally to the floor. After a week of tinkering with it in an attempt to troubleshoot, it dawned on us 'why not check in with Sonoma Woodcraft to see if they had any suggestions' Well..... they did way more than suggest. Since some quick video and photo emails didnt provide them with enough to determine the cause of malfunction, Chess drove 4 hours each way to the bed's new home to diagnosis and fix the issues... on a holiday weekend. He took his time and determined there was just enough wear and tear on the hardware and some wood parts that despite looking ok, prevented the system from normal operation (and it didnt help that one panel was reinstalled slightly out of alignment) The parts that were broken and worn were replaced or repaired - to do so he essentially took apart and reassembled a good portion of the unit - glue, screws, drilling, new hardware... he even reinstalled the wiring for the lighting, which I didnt get around to doing yet. We were left with a bed that once again works like it was designed, and we look forward to putting it to good use with many future house guests. This unit also had some decorative handles on the face of the faux cabinets that pulls that were missing. Much like socks that go missing in the wash, these pulls mysteriously vanished at some point between day 1 and relocation day. Of course no house guest, child or adult knew where they were or when they were last seen. Chess noticed they were missing and although not part of the proper function of the murphy bed, he arranged to have replacements sent to us so our 'functioning like new' murphy bed also looked complete. Chess and I chatted while he was working. I learned that his family started the company and he now after their retirement, he helps close friends keep the business going. We have been very happy with the quality of the Sonoma Woodcraft product we own but knowing more about the crew that built it and experiencing the care they take in helping maintain that product for a customer.... I am blown away. Chess and team deserve 6 yelp stars. I will recommend Sonoma Woodcraft to anyone even slightly interested in a murphy bed solution. If they received only half the customer satisfaction and service I got, they will be extremely pleased. Thanks again Chess, high five! read more

We bought our queen size Craftsman Murphy bed with table about 6 years ago. It makes my office into a guest room without us giving up much space. I use the table to sort papers, do projects or just as a place to get my taxes ready!! The workmanship has held up with not a loose item anywhere. We use the bed at least monthly and sometimes multiple times a week. It works so well, and we have moved it three times and reinstalled it as we rearranged our house, moved, and moved again. The wallbed that Jake and Greg created for us is the centerpiece in our new apartment. We needed to have a wallbed because we are living in two rooms and wanted to use the bedroom as an office during the day. The table that pulls down from the cabinet is also beautiful. We couldn't be happier with our new bed and desk. We looked at many wallbeds and this is the most beautiful and functional that we could find. Everything, from the beautiful cherry wood, the lighting, the usb ports, the large table, and the pull-down shelves - what more could a person want in a wallbed? read more

The Internet is a pretty amazing place, if it is even a place at all. There is a lot of misleading information, dead-ends, and wrong turns. There are scams, there are pages of self-vanities (like my blog - check it out!), and there is endless gorilla-style advertising (thank you pop-up blocker). But the Internet connects people. The Internet helps people find other people. It allows us to share information in ways that we could not easily do before. So my wife and I noticed that since moving to our new place, we had not been having all that many visitors. Particularly, we noticed that folks who came once were not returning. Now we were hesitant to attribute this to Josie, our kitty who loves (and primarily lives in) the guest room, because she is really sweet. The room itself is nicely sized, but the bedding arrangement made us suspicious. We had gotten rid of a futon couch that was actually quite comfy and replaced it with a cool inflatable mattress and stand device, which is nice for 10 minutes, but frankly my wife and I never tried it longer than that. So we had a brain storm and realized we needed a Murphy bed. A Murphy bed is one of the beds that folds up into the wall that is central to the plot of most TV comedies made in the 50's. It seemed like the perfect plan. The design is very space efficient, it allows you to use a regular mattress, unlike a sleeper sofa, and I have always had a secret desire to get closed up in one of those things. So we started looking around on the Internet and I found one could buy the hardware and plans for a nicely design bed for around $300. This seemed excellent, except in examining the plans, my wife was not too confident that she would end up with something other than a gigantic plywood box with a bed in it. Her idea was that it should look good, too. So the projects gets shelved, until she found Jake's ad for custom Murphy beds on Craigslist. Jake is a Sonoma County-based cabinet and furniture maker. We checked out his website, contacted him, and closed the deal. We are now thrilled to have an amazingly beautiful armoire with matching bookshelves in our guest room. What is not obvious at first is that this craftsman-style cherry armoire opens to become a lovely queen-sized bed. The photos on the website are accurate, but his creations look way better in situ. We feel he delivered a very good value as the project came out more beautifully than we had imagined possible. read more

We purchased a custom library wall bed for our multi-purpose living room/guest room. Not only is their workmanship superb but their attention to design detail is amazing. We had a queen Sleep Number bed we wanted to use. Jake said they would try but couldn't guarantee it would work but during installation (additional cost but highly recommended) they were able to drill a few strategically placed holes for the air hoses and pump's electrical wiring and everything turned out perfectly. We also asked to have two of the inside edges of the sliding shelves be designed so they become counters on either sides of the bed when opened. They're perfect and eliminate the need for nightstands. Sonoma Woodcraft is the real deal from beginning to end. Professional, courteous, master craftsmen, great attention to detail, flexible working with customers' needs and just overall nice people. I wouldn't hesitate purchasing again. read more

We got a no-frills wallbed for our studio apartment. We love it. This is a small, family-run company. They do great work and they are really helpful in answering questions. We had a lot of problem-solving around where to put the bed in our apartment due to having so many doors (Jake figured out a way to mount the bed over a superfluous closet door- why does one closet need 3 doors?), and how to get the bed in our 1920's elevator (they built the bed box in 2 pieces instead of one). They also answered questions for our property manager to help us get the go-ahead to install a wallbed. For a reasonable extra fee, they did the installation. There is a long wait because they make the beds one at a time but we got ours about a month earlier than they initially quoted us- which was great! Now it feels like we have a whole extra room. read more

Small business that makes superbly crafted furniture. The Murphy bed Jake and his team made for us looks fantastic. It is balanced so well it is actually fun to pull down and close up. It accommodated our existing mattress and can be closed with the bedding intact. It took 3 months from order to delivery but was well worth it. Looked online for wallbeds for our office/guest bedroom. Found Sonoma Woodcraft and drove up to the shop/showroom in Sebastopol to check out the workmanship. It was superb. Beautiful wood perfectly fitted and joined together by Jake's team. Sonoma Woodcraft is a small business but I was very impressed walking through the woodshop by all the woodworking machines. It is a very professional operation. We ended up purchasing a custom wall unit including book shelves, bed, and desk. Jake was very patient and helpful as we worked with him to decide on a final design and dimensions. Jake and his team installed the wall unit today. Everything fit and the quality of the woodworking is gorgeous. We feel like we bought a piece of art. Pricey but we definitely feel we got what we paid for. read more

We were looking for a quality wallbed for our guest room and were quickly overwhelmed by options on the internet. Fortunately, a friend had been in the market for a wallbed years ago and had done a lot of research at the time. He went with Jake at Sonoma Woodcraft and had nothing but raving reviews about the quality of the bed and the service he received. We loved the idea of shopping locally and so took a drive to Jake's shop. We are really picky, but it didn't take long for us to realize that this was it. All Jake's wallbeds are real wood and beautifully made. We opted for the queen bed with a bookcase on one side and the table that folds up into the bed - a great feature!
