The latest issue of True West magazine came out recently with its 2024 choices for "Best of the…read moreWest" and I swear either the fix is in and has been for years or the person who produces this slop has been asleep for quite awhile now. The choice that irked me the most was for "Best Old West Reenactment Group". The Prescott Regulators and their Shady Ladies, from Prescott, Arizona, was the choice and has been the choice for God knows how many times although there are plenty of other groups as good or far better. The write-up on the Regulators claims that among other things they "host the Annual Shootout on Whiskey Row" but they have not held that event since 2019. And in fact the group barely exists at all. That same year the group disintegrated into at least seven little groups because of endless in-fighting. Former members can be found in numerous other places but not Prescott. A group calling themselves the Prescott Regulators has resurfaced but it bears only a faint resemblance to the old group: it numbers at most a dozen members when the old group was more like 70. The True West staff needs to stop just reprinting the same material every year and actually get out there now and then.

A complete rip off! I had to get some stuff red ribboned which was $75 but they needed a notarize…read moresignature on 2 documents to be red ribboned. They charged me an extra $40 for the notarization of those signatures (2)... Guess what?? Arizona law states that a notary cannot charge more than $2.00 per signature notarized. Total rip off and will definitely not be going back.

It's a…read moregreat resource for learning about native wildlife, places to hike, and outdoor events going on in the area. I love reading the articles about desert critters and for a mere $8.50 a year, it's a bargain. The downside of the mag is that is features stories and articles about hunting. I'm a vegetarian, and I don't dig that, but if people are going to hunt it's the AZFGD that regulates it to make sure it's done correctly and respectively. Everybody should be able to appreciate that.

If you love to cook and/or eat seasonally, or garden, Edible Phoenix is a must-have for that alone. Edible (*Insert your town here*) magazines are great. I've sought them out all over the country when I've lived elsewhere, and Phoenix's isn't the best, content-wise (sometimes surprisingly sparse), but it's still great. I pick up my copies either at Jam in Scottsdale or Essence Bakery in Tempe. This is a great read! Some magazines have lots of 1-2 paragraph articles framed around big…read morepictures. This is not one of those! Expect full page, well written articles by folks who certainly seem to know what they are talking about. I've only gotten 2 editions since finding them, but I've been pleasantly surprised in both. Little bit of "where we were" with lots of "where we are and where we're going". Great tips and general advise on gardening and fresh food trends. I already have a few places they recommended that I can't wait to try. I always say you can tell a lot about a magazine by it's advertisers. There are some great ones here. Lots of fun businesses that I hadn't seen advertised in many other places. And I'll say - I'm happy that they're keeping it simple in black and white vs. trying to make the advertisers pay more for glossy paper and a 5 color edition. This looks much more refined - and it helps to keep the advertising costs down for small businesses. Not to mention that whole better for the earth thing. I heartily recommend this as a great pick up. Read it while you lunch, while lounging on the sofa or keep it in the bathroom for some sophisticated "personal office" reading.
