One of the most unique cafe/restaurant I visited. The food is excellent, best chicken I have ever had. Chicken is perfectly cooked, crispy skin, tastes so fresh. The salad is amazing also with such fresh ingredients. Came twice in the two days we've been here, had the salad, chicken wings, and Lucerne beer both times. The wings are served with fresh warm bread. The decor is so interesting, intimate and the place makes you feel as if you are eating in someone's home. Place feels very inviting and warm. In the evening there are candles everywhere and all day fresh beautiful flowers on each table. There are many pictures hanging on the walls, lots of different cuckoo clocks, shallots hanging from the ceiling. On the tables are these cute napkin holders. The tables themselves and the chairs also charming. The owner was there serving the food both times we came, very nice man passionate about his place and food. The kitchen is also located in the center of the place. No complaints. The chicken wings were amazing!!! Highly recommend. The portion sizes are also pretty good. Salad was about 7 franks and large portion. The chicken wings come with 5 pieces for 20 franks... so good. Loved this place and everything about it. read more

Searched for a place to eat while we were walking around lucerne and found this hole in the wall restaurant. Decors were a bit eclectic but it works well especially with the 70s music. Obviously this place is amazing and you should definitely go if you're around town. The owner and waitress were both so kind, they stayed with us after closing a bit to chat and shared a drink. I am not a huge fan of meat in general, but this was great! I also appreciated that we got a plate and fork for the salad with the combo, so I was able to use that with my chicken. Most people will probably not have the problem I do with bone-in meat, but that was helpful to me! The sauce is incredible, like a butter/cream/garlic mixture. AWFUL!! The owner was the rudest man I have ever met. There were four of us (American) and we were not looking for a large meal but something good and to drink a few beers. When we attempted to order a 1/2 a chicken $20, wing basket $20, side of French fries $10, and extra sauce $3.50 along with 4 $5 beers putting our totals at somewhere around $70...not exactly "screwing the guy" on the bill. He freaked out exclaiming we "could not share food in his restaurant"... if we wanted share we had to do the "share option" for $30 a person which only included chicken, no sides, and no beverages. He made a scene in front of numerous customers making us feel extremely uncomfortable. We decided to get up and leave and he said "good go" as we walked out. A near by table of American tourists asked ya what had happened (they had just began their dining experience) and we explained that you can't share food ....they were just as shocked at the rude behavior of the owner and at the fact that you cannot share the family style portions that are provided. I'm convinced that the 5-star reviews are from wait staff and friends of the owner. This is not friendly service, and not good food. It's also absolutely not a good deal for the price. Know that the menu is VERY limited. Chicken thighs, chicken legs, or half a chicken. Fries, bread, salad are offered sides. You are FORBIDDEN from sharing with your friends and unapologetically FORBIDDEN from using utensils. The staff isn't concerned with whether you like your meal or not (after food delivered, we were completely ignored while waitress and owner resumed their personal social lives)- you are treated as if you should be thanking them for eating their bland overpriced food. When we weren't shooing away flies and bugs from our meal, we were wondering what the big deal about this place was. I DO NOT RECOMMEND. read more

We had a really good meal and dining experience. The bread and butter sauce is very good and almost impossible to stop eating. The chicken is outstanding, has crisp skin and moist meat. If you expect it to be like American fried chicken you'll be disappointed. You're not in America! It's dredged, deep fried and very good. The owner is a character, nice and personable. Amazing food, but the manager/ owner can be aggressive if you don't order what he wants you to order. This happens and we return because we love the food. Loved the decor of the restaurant and the server was extremely helpful for an out of towner. Absolutely amazing food. The fried chicken is not at all greasy and the skin is perfectly crispy and the seasoning is perfect. The Soul Sauce tastes like butter and garlic made love and had a beautiful baby. The salad dressing is tangy and wonderful. We ate here with our 11 month old and the waiter and owner did not give us any grief when he made the occasional noise or banged his cup on the table a few times. The restaurant had a funky soul/blues type atmosphere, it is a very small and intimate place. The owner came out and thanked us when we left. This restaurant is brilliant! I would highly recommend! You get a choice between chicken legs, wings or half chicken, and can get sides of chips (French fries) or salad! You also receive bread and the amazing "Soul Sauce" created with a secret recipe (you also have the choice whether you want garlic or not). Overall a great experience! But, that's a five star review. Yet I gave it three stars. Why? I have been writing this review on and off for the past few weeks, and today I went to Soul Chicken with my Dad and family friends for his birthday. My Mum reserved a table for 8, yet we were squeezed into a table for 4/5. Once the people at the table next to us left, two of us sat at the next table. Then some people who had made a reservation for that table came and we told them what had happened. Then the manager came and starting shouting at us, and the other people tried to calm him down. At this point we already had chips, salad and our drinks, so we couldn't really walk out. The other group walked out the restaurant and said that what happened to us was unacceptable. As they were about to leave, the manager said "you can sit there and you never come back". He swore in front of the children, shouted about how he is a communist and didn't want any of our money. At this point my little sister (who is 10) started crying and she had to be comforted by our family friends. We had been to Soul Chicken multiple times, and he banned us! But the waitresses on the other hand were absolutely lovely! They tried to calm down the manager, and told us that the ban would not make any impact on our visits. They also said that the restaurant is not normally that busy. therefore he was very stressed and that he was acting up before we even arrived. I know a lot of people have had the same experience as us, because of all of the reviews and also the messages on the bathroom wall (you are allowed to write things all over the bathroom), which included things like "fix your anger issues" and "thanks a lot horrible chef/manager". But I can tell you that I have been to Soul Chicken a lot of times and this is the only time I have had this experience. Try going for lunch on a weekday as it probably won't be as busy! read more

Terrible terrible ! Thanks for the review, I went straight there and it's right near my hostel. Walked in, greeted and I ask to have my food to go politely and was sat and asked to try the butter and bread.... Okay... Just tasted like buttermilk with garlic lol. Then he tells me it's 12 franks and I give him a 50 and get 30 back... He said I have no change okay and looked at me like I was supposed to be okay with not getting 8 back because he simply didn't have change ????? Then the chicken wasn't that great! I'm having a feeling that he had his friends put reviews on here for him because there is no way that this place is worth the hype or reviews. Go to KFC if you can lol I'm from America and have a southern background so I know fried chicken like the back of my hand. Service is very friendly and the room, while small, is decorated in a unique and funky manner. Unfortunately, while the chicken certainly isn't bad, it's nothing special. I personally don't find deep fried chicken without a proper batter to be that special. The salad is also rather generic and the fries, which you get a lot of, are very boring.
