On top of that, the Open Mats on Saturday are free to all. An interesting quirk here is that the classes aren't divided into Gi/No-Gi classes. Miguel's approach is that everyone should be proficient in both so there's a weekly rotation between Gi and No-Gi which goes towards being well-rounded. I usually stick with Gi classes but by coming here I couldn't 'hide out' in my pajamas. What's more I know for a fact that Professor Miguel has always been willing to help out his students life situation he'll find a way to keep his students training.

I previously trained at the Gracie Humaita in South Austin. There I complained several times about…read morean individual named Creig O'Obrien. An obese white belt that would pick fights with the other lower belts on the mat and in the changing room. My complaints went unheard. I quit and over a year's time, several others quit too. They only removed him after he bit someone in sparring. Then he just went to the Humaita in Cedar Park, where I was attending the free veteran training days because I'm a Iraq war veteran with PTSD, but he would just show up to those classes too even though he wasn't a veteran. He would do it to harass me. So I quit going here too. Finally he was kicked out of there 6-12 months later. I cannot support a school that doesn't take harassment or threats of abuse from their members seriously. There clearly just shuffled him around from one Humaita school to another Humaita School. Creig is still in the community and he fights amateur Muay Thai at local bars. I cannot recommend this school because they allowed this problem into their school knowing his reputation, until he became too much of a problem for them. However I never made a complaint about him to this school. I just gave up.

From the moment I first walked in to ask about a free trial, the atmosphere felt uncomfortable everyone looked at me like I was some kind of intruder instead of a potential new student. No one greeted me or tried to make me feel welcome. That should've been the first red flag. During training, things went from awkward to dangerous. Someone decided to pull on my heel extremely hard not even applying a proper inside heel hook or any legitimate control and I felt a pop in my knee. I immediately knew something was wrong. That one careless move left me with internal damage in my left knee. I can barely move it now and can't afford the medical costs to fix it. It's been painful physically and mentally because I came here just to learn and have a good experience. On top of that, the mats were terrible. They had almost no grip super slippery even when dry. It's the kind of surface where you can slide around during drilling or sparring, which makes it way easier to get hurt. A gym that takes safety seriously would invest in proper mats like Fuji or Zebra mats, not the cheap ones that feel like plastic flooring. I'm not posting this out of anger I just want to give people an honest warning. The environment here doesn't feel controlled, and safety clearly isn't a priority. If you're looking for a competitive but respectful place to train, I strongly suggest going somewhere else. I train at Kingsway, and it's a night and day difference still very intense and competitive, but everything is structured, the mats are safe, and people actually look out for each other. That's how a real gym should operate.

Called to cancel was convinced to "freeze," and was then told we still had to pay for 30 days before the freeze. I called before the freeze was over in order to cancel and they said I had to re-activate and pay 30 days again in order to cancel. This was not explained when I originally wanted to cancel and froze instead. There were other things like this even when we first signed up that should have been a warning. They were and are dishonest in their business practices, rushing you through signing up without reading the contract (it's on me for not stopping them, but also they should be entering a contract in good faith which they did not). The coaches were great with our kids, even though the classes were over filled. They are good instructors who are kind. But the people who run the desk and finances are not trustworthy. Find another school if you can.

Sadly…read morewhen I arrived a week ago to schedule classes I was told that they do not offer Jiu Jitsu anymore because they do not have an instructor. They mentioned that they need to have the advertising taken off groupon website. It is a week later and their groupon is still active on Group.com. So I opted for kickboxing and scheduled a class for 7:15 and was told to be there 10-15 minutes before class starts. I arrived at 7:01 and waited till 7:16. The door was locked and 2 people sparring in the back. They saw we when I knocked loudly but they ignored me. I suspected that they had a private session going one. I then left. Never got call but I suspect I will get one after posting here.

Read your…read morecontract you sign with them very carefully and understand you must come in to fill out a cancellation form. They will continue to charge your credit card until you do so. On top of that it has to be 30 day notice so if you get charged and come in 2 weeks later you will get charged one more month. It's 2016 it should not be this hard to cancel. Also, Master Schill is an honorable person who gave me a refund after sign-up, since I was looking for a bit different program at the time as a solo adult.
