Unsafe training, bad mats, and poor environment I walked in fine and left injured…read more I decided to try out this gym because it's close to my house. From the moment I first walked in to ask about a free trial, the atmosphere felt uncomfortable everyone looked at me like I was some kind of intruder instead of a potential new student. No one greeted me or tried to make me feel welcome. That should've been the first red flag. During training, things went from awkward to dangerous. Someone decided to pull on my heel extremely hard not even applying a proper inside heel hook or any legitimate control and I felt a pop in my knee. I immediately knew something was wrong. That one careless move left me with internal damage in my left knee. I can barely move it now and can't afford the medical costs to fix it. It's been painful physically and mentally because I came here just to learn and have a good experience. On top of that, the mats were terrible. They had almost no grip super slippery even when dry. It's the kind of surface where you can slide around during drilling or sparring, which makes it way easier to get hurt. A gym that takes safety seriously would invest in proper mats like Fuji or Zebra mats, not the cheap ones that feel like plastic flooring. I'm not posting this out of anger I just want to give people an honest warning. The environment here doesn't feel controlled, and safety clearly isn't a priority. If you're looking for a competitive but respectful place to train, I strongly suggest going somewhere else. I train at Kingsway, and it's a night and day difference still very intense and competitive, but everything is structured, the mats are safe, and people actually look out for each other. That's how a real gym should operate.

They were and are dishonest in their business practices, rushing you through signing up without reading the contract (it's on me for not stopping them, but also they should be entering a contract in good faith which they did not). The coaches were great with our kids, even though the classes were over filled. They are good instructors who are kind. But the people who run the desk and finances are not trustworthy. Find another school if you can.

The door was locked and 2 people sparring in the back. They saw we when I knocked loudly but they ignored me. I suspected that they had a private session going one. I then left. Never got call but I suspect I will get one after posting here.

Most of the high reviews are from years ago…read more Master Kim, the owner, is missing and rarely interacts with students. The instructors are hit or miss. If you get one of the 2 that actually teach they have different approaches that contradict each other. A 3rd teacher is a student that has no business teaching. He has no leadership ability and the students have no respect for him. At one point in 2022 their main instructor at the time went on vacation and then was out sick for an extended time. During that time, the owner, master Kim was still no where to be found and the classes were taught by students. When the instructor came back most of the classes were a disobedient mess. No one was prepared for that round of testing so they had the students repeat the previous test since they went 2 months without learning anything. When you look at the calendar it is packed with classes, but that is not up to date. They teach multiple experience levels at the same time in a relatively tiny studio. There is no common space, for parents, gear, backpacks or shoes. Just a narrow walkway with a row of benches right off the mat. Students get close enough to hit spectators. Kids are stacked too close to each other and run into each other while practicing forms. There is so much confusion about which class is at each time, you almost always end up with lower belts in the advanced class. They take 30 minutes to warmup, split into groups, maybe do 5-10 minutes of Taekwondo, and then spend the last 15 minutes of class playing a kids game like tag or jump rope. The week before each test they realize how under prepared most students are and suddenly get serious. They need everyone to sign up for the test because it is a revenue generator. You get to the test, where master Kim makes an appearance. His rambling and confusing comments drag the event beyond the expected time, usually running an hour late for 1 hour time blocks. The test devolves into him referring to everyone as "you" since he doesn't know any of his students names. He starts teaching a class during the test. It is really more judgement on the poor quality of instructors rather than the students trying to pass. The parents sit there asking themselves where this level of instruction has been the prior 3 months. Ultimately the students try multiple times, take breaks to have 1 on 1 training sessions before they try again. Eventually after enough attempts most of them pass. I wrote this review while sitting at a belt test, watching multiple students fail even though they required a testing form to be signed in advance by an instructor, acknowledging they were ready. Master Kim determines if the kids pass the test, but the instructors somehow have no idea what his standards are. In the weeks leading up to the test, us and other families were requesting help on specific aspects of the test but the help provided by the instructor (who is actually a student on the performance team) was minimal and provided no constructive feedback. Over half of the students failed and the owner told those families that he would personally guarantee to work with them for 2 weeks and they would retest and pass. From Friday to Tuesday master Kim forgot about the promise he made. It turned into assigning a different instructor to work with them which turned into students (who were not instructors or black belts) working with the kids for about 15 minutes in one of the classes. The most frustrating part of the re-test was an instructor telling the kids if they worked "this hard" before the original test they would have passed the first time. Absolutely disconnected, if the instructors were consistent every class, rather than just the week before a test, their students would have actually been prepared. But keep letting the kids run around playing tag with pool noodles.

That being said, Lake Georgetown is quite different and it would seem that the water is pretty clean there. It probably goes without saying it is much less crowded than Lake Austin/Travis or anything near downtown, and it has plenty of space for picnicking, camping, fishing, and other outdoor activities. Usually I will go running around Lake Georgetown because it is much less crowded than Lake Austin, and there are shorter routes depending how far you want to run. I guess the one thing I will say is that the trails to "hike" or walk around the lake are not as established as some other hiking trails I've been on, so just be prepared for that and maybe don't wear short shorts if you're going to try any hikes around the lake.

My experience with Professor Bruno Guimaraes at Peak Performance Martial Arts has been positive. He is a very nice person and a great instructor. it shows when he teaches. He is very patience with my family, especially the kids. He tries to show each move with purpose. He also tries to show defense and counter attack for each move. Walking into the gym can feel intimidating at first, but by week three you will be hooked. You might wonder, if I'm still learning and not very good, what's the point? Here's a story. I love hiking, but I used to constantly look down, never fully trusting myself on the trail. On Christmas Eve, after just five weeks in class, I went for a long hike and found myself looking up, confident, and trusting my body and my feet. I was able to enjoy the golden hour sunset and take in the horizon instead of staring at the trail beneath me. I recently ran a full mile, something that may not sound impressive, but I did it without pain. Unlike weightlifting, my training here strengthens my joints and ligaments along with my muscles, so I don't experience the usual aches. Again, I ran with my head up, chasing the horizon instead of watching my feet. Striking and BJJ demand focus. You have to pay attention, follow your opponent, and anticipate what's coming next. This practice has also improved my active listening at home and at work. I thought I was a good listener before, but now I can tell I'm much more present. Coach Cannon, Coach Freddy, and Coach Maria, you are patient, skilled, and inspiring. I can't say enough about the gym and its community.

We were introduced to Coach Colin through a friend as he was just opening Hutto BJJ. He was extremely flexible and met our weekend schedule needs. We immediately liked him for his communication style, diverse martial arts knowledge, and is great with kids. We recently had another private...our son is now 9, and coach is now a Professor! I think its going to be our thing to book a private before tournaments. He goes through as many topics and scenarios as you can handle. Its like cramming before a test and I think its invaluable and affordable! As a side note: My 2yo was going nuts with his play setup. She also liked him instantly. She quickly learned him name and still talks about that day. FYI I think he might be starting something for the little littles

There are plenty of TaeKwondo and other martial arts school in Austin so picking the right one can…read morebe difficult. After much searching, I have found the right place for our entire family. The Round Rock TaeKwondo is affiliated with the Tiger Rock program. They have several locations in the Austin area and membership to one allows you to take classes at any of their locations. They offer TaeKwondo, Jiu Jitsu, grappling and Yoga classes for toddlers to adults. We have been here for almost a month now. This is location is owned by Mr. Toohey and run by his wife, both are super friendly. Mr. Toohey is very good with kids. He is firm, yet nurturing. He has their respect and they look forward to coming to class everyday. I have never seen my boys so excited to go anywhere. They are even cleaning their rooms and practicing piano just so they can go to TaeKwondo. The new location is much larger, with large viewing windows and a separate room for their after school care. The family membership is a great deal so my husband and I are going to try their Jiu Jitsu program. If you are looking for a great martial arts program in a family-friendly atmosphere, I highly recommend this location.
