    Soul Outside
    Akash M.

This review is for the Soul Outside experience. The Hudson Yards location is one of the few studios in the city with outdoor classes. The bikes are a reasonable distance apart, so you never have to worry about that awkward elbow touch during push-ups. The bikes are always clean and have everything you need (towels and weights), and staff is always nearby to get you anything you might be missing. I've taken classes led by James J and Emma--both are great! James is hilarious and keeps you on your toes with his spicy humor. Emma has a nurturing vibe, but don't be fooled because she will make you work your ass off. You can still go inside the studio to use the restroom and lockers. The lockers, bathrooms, and the studio itself are spotless.

You're helped immediately upon coming in. They have lockers both in the locker room and next to the studios, showers, hair dryers and the works, and a shop. They provide shoes and towels, but you can bring your own shoes. You need to bring your own water bottle. First timers get seated first, and at least for the class I took, that was the smallest group. If I lived closer, I'd absolutely do this again. AT is AWESOME by the way. Just as genuine and enthusiastic in person as he seems online.

Pre-pandemic, I'd take spin classes in-studio and then in 2019, I bought my bike because I loved the classes so much and wanted easy access to them. Peloton instructors are golden, once you find the ones that resonate the most for you (kind of like therapists). When the pandemic hit, in-class was suspended, teachers did their thing from their homes and so it went for a while before the new studio opened and then it seemed impossible to get into a class, so I didn't even try. Now that I've gotten in, I cannot wait to go back! The space is huge, with separate rooms for each class. I took both a spin class with Robin and a yoga class with Anna. Check-in was seamless, and as always, the staff is informative and accommodating, from check-in to locker room and classrooms. If you're looking to buy apparel, it's on the upper level past the locker rooms. There's also areas in which you can hang out before/between/after classes. Quick tips: I was worried I'd be stuck grabbing a bike that would be prominently on camera. I had no need to worry because those are highly desirable spots and people get there early to get their place in line and I observed those were the bikes that people grabbed first. The yoga studio is small, seven mats. It's a more intimate experience and Anna, who is so lovely, got to know everyone in the class and spent significant time afterwards for photo ops in the studio.

Being outside in the fresh air not only feels amazing but offers spectacular views of NYC. The staff is super engaging, and the instructors go above and beyond to make sure you feel welcomed. There is such a sense of community and consistency in the work that they do. Bouncing back from a wild time during the pandemic when my legs weren't working all that well, and I wasn't walking on my own, I was lucky enough to stumble onto Complete Body. It was here that I learned to swim and built back my strength and mobility. It was finally though in Natalie's class where I was able to move my legs quickly and freely again. She is a real force. And brings her all to everything she does. She also has amazing playlists. I feel so excited to ride now..even In the cold, even in the rain, even if I'm tired. I'm so lucky to have found a place like this and an instructor like her. Her whole team really. Everyone should be so lucky to stumble onto such a comeback:)

Compared to their Bklyn Heights and 19th st locations, the SoulCycle NoMad location is my favorite…read moreso far. They have lockers upstairs and downstairs, where it's a lot more spacious. Their bathrooms are also roomier, where I didn't feel like it was cramped when moving about the area. All the necessary toiletries were stocked and staff came around to clean the bathroom floors as well. There are also ample showers here (~8), so there was little to no wait for an available one. Only downside was that there was no hot water in this location, however it wasn't too much of an inconvenience, as I was sweating a ton after the class to care. They did offer the showers at their nearby 19th st location that had hot water, but at the time, it was inconvenient to trek there in sweaty workout clothes. The staff here are not too bad. They're supportive and more than willing to help adjust your seat as well. I took a class here with Gabby A and her playlist had perfectly paced music that wasn't outrageously fast, so I felt like I got a good workout at my (beginner-spin) level. I love that you're free to go at your own pace, regardless, and the class absolutely feels like a judgement-free zone. Love this SoulCycle area as well and would absolutely book a class at this location again!

With the first class ending around 10:15am, by the time you head out it's almost lunch time. I think the earliest weekday class may be 7am, which can be a challenge if you have to be at work early. Check in is easy and staff are friendly. It gets very crowded fast trying to find a spot to sit and change shoes or get to a locker. Even worse when the next class shows up and you are trying to exit the studio and change shoes. There two single restrooms and a tight fit by the mirror once you step outside of a restroom. They offer hair ties, spray deodorant, Malin & Goetz lotion, ear plugs... fairly standard. There are no showers, but they noted I could shower downstairs at Pure Barre because they share. An employee helped set up my bike before class started. The studio felt like most crowded cycle studios in NYC. The air circulation wasn't the best and I noticed they kept opening the door every so often. A little distracting when the studio is dark but you periodically get the bright lights from the doors opening. Music wasn't really my favorite. Overall friendly staff, but I didn't leave feeling like I had an intense workout. This location was a bit out of the way for me and felt very cramped from seating to restrooms. Perhaps the other studio locations are more spacious?

Well, 110 degree heat index city days aside, I guess. Casey is a very good instructor--strong, intense, and ultimately encouraging, and a very inventive ride. The studio space is nice--three rows of approximately 30-35 bikes, which are new and excellent; great to ride, and easy to adjust. You need spin shoes, which you can bring (I brought my SPDs) or can rent theirs, I think $4. Locker areas are clean and more than adequate--a bit tight to pass through when others are down there, but ample amount of lockers overall. Clean, modern bathroom, with 2-3 showers if you need to (and you will, if not going straight home!) The workout involved light weight sessions and lots of mini push-ups and crunches owhile on the bike--I've encountered this before snd slightly prefer straight spin, but it's also a fine approach. The two things I didn't personally care for: (a) the instructor will go around and adjust your resistance. We were warned in advance, but I still didn't appreciate it. In my experience most people in spin are there voluntarily and want to push themselves. It struck me as unnecessary and intrusive, and (b) a bit too much attention to people staying in rhythm--on the same leg and on the same beat. Again, I appreciate an encouraging push, but ultimately people need to be able to keep their own pace as they are able while working out. I appreciated the tough workout and would probably come back (signed up via ClassPass to try it out). Not sure I'd make it a regular though, felt like a potential for a bit too much of a cult-y soul cycle vibe or even a potential drill sergeant vibe that I don't appreciate. Also not sure I'd recommend to a spin/cycling beginner.
