A large, yet cozy vibe game/comic shop! The very first thing I noticed on entry was the big Progress Pride flag hanging from the rafters-- immediately I knew I was among my people: the queer and nerdy! Approximately half the store is dedicated to various reading materials like comics, manga, and fiction. The other half is board games, RPGs, and supplies for said games (like mini figs and paints, dice, etc.). Throughout the store you'll also find toys, posters, collectibles, comic/trading card storage, and more. There's a lot to look at, so if you've never been, I recommend giving yourself at least an hour to browse around. This game shop also doubles as a community gathering and event space. There's lots of room and tables/chairs in the back to accommodate gamers who want to come in and play or hang and be social. I'm sure they have many specific goings-on each week (for example, I saw a sign advertising mini fig painting every Monday evening!); you can check out their event calendar on their website. There was also a gender ambivalent restroom and water fountain/water bottle refill station nearby. Some beverages were available for sale near the front. It is also quite obviously a safe space, as I saw in addition to the hanging pride flag an entire section dedicated to queer and trans materials, and an end cap as well for POC and disabled folk. I can't say how much it means to me as a trans person to see this kind of representation clearly on display during a challenging political time. I hadn't gone with the intention of buying anything (isn't that typical? lol) but to be honest, when I saw the queer support they were displaying, I wanted to support them back. It wasn't hard to find a couple things I wanted in order to give them my financial business. If you too prioritize supporting local queer businesses, consider buying from here! I normally wouldn't have been up this far north from where I live, but I was headed to a Yelp Elite event a little early and decided to see what else was in the area. So glad I stopped in here! Nowadays at their new location it's usually too cramped and crowded and just doesn't have as many fun things for me anymore (I guess I grew up). Also, twice that I've visited for my one comic they've been out so I sadly will continue to use my other place going forward. Their game selection is great however and I love their sales. read more

My boyfriend and I frequently spend days off travelling to whatever stores we can find that sell MTG products. This last week we made our way to Roseville to visit Source and when I walked in I felt like a kid in a candy store. Source is HUGE. I'm usually only interested in the Magic selection, but I left the store with three comic books that I've been loving. (Fun fact: I assumed all comics were super hero/action themed so I never bothered browsing them to begin with. After reading Alex & Ada I decided to look up related comics and Source had almost all of them!) To top it all off, everything was arranged in alphabetical order by title so I could easily find what I needed without help. As far as Magic goes, it's a yes from me. I didn't get to look into their singles too much on this trip but they had sustainable Return to Earth Boulder boxes that I had never seen before which I thought was awesome. You can also buy dice individually which I wish every store did because there are a few dice types I never use. They have a great dice selection and a large area with tables to play, too. I'm giving four stars because the energy at the checkout desk is pretty low. I really love finding high energy stores where the employees chat with you about whatever you're buying. It's a big part of the experience for me, personally. Other than that, Source Comics & Games is on the money! You won't regret stopping by. It's easy to become overwhelmed quickly once inside Source. There's so much stuff everywhere you almost don't know where to start. Their comics along the wall are organized alphabetically...personal preference is to have them by arranged by publisher, but that's just me. Loads of board games as well. High sticker price on these items. This is what typically deters me from buying new games in-store. No exception here. There's a huge area in back for gameplay and I'm sure it's probably packed for events and the like. If you're looking for a comic, graphic novel, trade paperback; chances are good they'll have it. I have come here several times but it is less and less appealing each time. Their prices are getting a bit ridiculous as well. Modern Masters 2015 booster box is $600 vs online for $290 is just robbing people. General booster boxes are $120 ea, where I can go anywhere else for $100. The card selection is also pretty weak. Recap. Today I decided to swing in. They have Alliances booster packs for $49.99 ea I mean really? A box fetches $900, and they simply double the pricing? This place completely blows now. First the good, an amazing selection. Lots of games that are hard to find. They used to be the only ones around for Warhammer, paints, dice and various miscellaneous pieces that you might need for rpgs. They still have the items but now other stores do too. The not so good, I have always found the staff to be less than helpful. It feels like a men's club and I am not wanted. I don't think I have ever seen one of the people that work there smile when they were ringing me up. I like finding games that I haven't played in person but no one has ever offered to help me with anything. When I ask for help, it seems like I am interrupting and in their way. If you are male, you probably have a different experience. But I am not and I enjoy looking around here but don't enjoy having to interact with the staff. read more

I love this nerd Mecca. I'm their demo in many areas, and I sorta long to be even more so. The staff are friendly and helpful enough. The bummer the last time I was there some music playing with what I consider inappropriate language. I'm fine with it, but it wasn't something I was excited my 9 year old was hearing. Okay, so I was a little worried about this place after reading all the reviews about unfair treatment to females and transphobic employees. Well, I am happy to say that I encountered none of that here and am in fact definitely planning on another visit. This store is bigger than any comic store I've ever visited, with a massive manga section with many titles I was extremely excited to see. There was too much to take in at once and my only regret was I couldn't buy up everything I saw. I had to settle for four books in very good condition, after about thirty minutes ransacking the shelves. There is also a space where the carpet of the store fades away to plain stone, where you can eat and drink while reading your favorites. This store contains so many pop culture merchandise and comics I would definitely need another visit to completely catalogue. Instead, I'll just say this: this one is a keeper, and you should definitely visit it if you find yourself in the twin cities. Now, the part you've all been waiting for: the customer service. The lady at the register was beyond helpful. She was cheerful despite the man before me, who was trying to find a specific game card. When she checked out my books, we both noticed we had a similar love of manga, and even discovered a common interest in the show Black Butler(side note: if you love anime/manga, you need to read the manga AND watch the anime, or else you haven't truly lived.) In summary, I left this store blissfully happy and I will definitely visit it again, and I urge you to do so as well. read more

How to start about the Source. Well, you can get comic books there. Bring your family the whole family. From old war figurines (I am sure there is a name for them.) Board games you can't get at the big box stores, collectible card games, my little ponies, graphic novels, dice, geek accessories galore, and a staff that knows their stuff. Each of them has their expertise and is generously willing to give their time and energy to make sure you get what's right for you. Then there is the events check the calendar they have a huge game room and the just let people use it. Come on in to play some games. I can't say enough how great this place and its staff are. Just seeing parents and kids connecting on a real level as they get into some game or hobby is worth going. read more

This is by far the greatest comic book and gaming store in the Twin Cities I have been to. I was looking for some Star Wars miniature game figures, but they only seemed to have booster packs and some starter packs. I would like to have seen some individual figures, but I guess if they choose one miniature game they have to choose them all. I was big into Battle Tech and War Hammer when I was in high school and I would have had liquid dreams about this place when I was in game boy mode about 16 years ago with all their models and the big gaming room off to the side for guys to play these games. Comics are everywhere too and statuettes are abound. There is stuff everywhere! They have tons of miniatures and lots of card games, basically if you are a gaming or comic book fan, this is your Mecca. The staff is a little eccentric, my wife acted like she was in Dante's Inferno just looking around at the strange clientele that perused around us, but I reassured her that this was like a safe haven for people that were looked at as not the cool jock types in high school, where they felt comfortable to discuss Dungeons and Dragons and are usually the smart kids that are so smart that others don't understand them. This place exceeded our expectations! We went on a Friday after dinner since they close at midnight, and there were a few customers in addition to several players at the back tables. Upon entry, we were welcomed to the store by a friendly employee. Ended up staying longer than we planned because it's by far the biggest store that we've encountered dedicated to tabletop games, warhammer, d&d, comics, and more. Plenty of free parking. I go to this store on Free Comic Book Day only. It's a mad house, yet there are super heroes and others to see. Batman was missing this year, which was a downer for my son. If you are into comics, this is a good store for everything in the medium including games and action figures. Parking is terrible, so plan ahead. Don't park in the small lot across the street from the store. Shoppers aren't allowed in there, though it's not posted, and you can get ticketed and towed. read more

I really wanted to like this place (and I do like their selection) but my 3rd time there I had a pretty poor experience that I think is, unfortunately, probably indicative of how the business is actually operated. I went in to buy the latest special edition of Mordenkainen Tome of Foes, and noticed that all of their copies seemed to have some printing defects on the cover. Several weeks prior, WOTC had released a *mandatory* recall notice on all defective copies of the book because of the production issues. I brought this to the attention of the staff at the front desk, and was told that their distributor had instructed them to "sell what they could", and that they allegedly were not aware that the recall was mandatory. That, in and of itself, isn't a huge deal--I showed them the official recall notice and was told that they would inform their manager and call me back when they had an update. The problem here is twofold: First, this was over a month ago and I never got a call back. This tells me that they never actually did anything about the recall, and sold materials that they knew to be defective to their customers. Second, while I was talking to a staff member about this, another staff member *repeatedly* tried to get me to buy the defective (limited edition custom cover) book on the grounds that "they all get damaged from use anyway". Sorry man, I take really good care of my books. I cannot recommend that people support a company that willfully distributes defective products, and tries to pressure customers into buying the same. Their selection is great but this experience has shown me that they will not stand behind what they sell, or even do the bare minimum (required by the publisher, as they're an official WOTC shop) to conform to a minimum standard of quality. read more

Convenience: Located just off highway 36 and reasonably close to route 84 and 87 bus stops Source is easy to find and easy to get to. There's bike parking nearby, it's near a McDonald's and a Caribou Coffee, what can I say the store is in a good spot. Variety: Like any decent used book store it's difficult to walk into Source and not discover something new that's also something old. Yes, issues from the last four months are easy to find along the shelves that occupy 3/4 of the shops north wall (I myself really enjoy how they handle subscription accounts) but the real beauty is in their infinite amount of vintage comics neatly fitted into about a hundred well sorted pull out drawers. You could spend days looking through their collections: Stan Lee publications, The Walking Dead, New 52 they have it all. If you're a collector, local or visiting, you should definitely consider stopping by. Customer Service: As a college student who desperately needs a weekly escape from the stressful university atmosphere Source has turned out to be a solid place to not only get my fix of Scott Snyder and Geoff Johns issues but also a great place to relax and feel welcomed. What really sets Comic stores apart from each other is the service and it's nice to go somewhere where the first words out of their mouth aren't the price of your purchase. Burrell and the guys ask me how I'm doing, what I'm reading, give me advice on school. After just two previous trips Burrell remembered my name, my subscriptions and even made a few in stock suggestions on the side. Source's biggest positive is their selection. It is a massive store and has a huge range of comics, board games, TTRPGs, miniatures, and everything else your nerdy self needs. The only downside is some of the employee interactions I've had. Some employees are really nice and friendly, but some are not very socially adept, it feels. When I have questions, I have occasionally gotten very blunt, one word responses that were not helpful. But other times I get someone really knowledgeable and friendly. It's kind of hit or miss. Bottom line, definitely check this place out, it's great! read more

It is only fair to start this review with the explanation that it is from the viewpoint of a comic collector. While I also consider myself a gamer, my principle reason for shopping at Source was for my comic pulls. I should also state that they do have a large selection of toys, graphic novels, games, and books, which is why this is a two-star review instead of a one, though you can see my caveat on the quality of the items they have below. I'd rather give them a 1.5 star, but it is only fair to round up rather than down. I reserve my one-star reviews for truly awful places. Besides charging you to join their "club" in order to pull your regular comics for you and get a minor discount, I can report first hand that it has been a generally unpleasant experience all but one time I visited. Generally speaking, the individuals who work there do not care about you or the quality of the comics they pull for you. I've had both damaged pulls and incomplete pulls. I'm not as extreme of a collector as I was in my teenage years, but I do think it's fair to expect that when I purchase comics they are in mint condition, without broken bindings or creases on the pages because whoever happened to be at the counter decided to grab a wad of my comics with one meaty hand clamped down like he's carrying a ream of printer paper. I had one extremely poor experience where I pointed out the damage to the person at the counter on one of my issues. He told me that there might be more in the racks. He wouldn't look it up, he didn't offer to order me another one, he didn't even point out in the racks where the replacement might be. After wandering up and down the racks for 10 minutes, I eventually find the title, but no luck in finding a replacement issue. I return to the counter to the short abrupt response of "So are you going to buy it?" Figuring that I still did want to read the issue, I did buy it, but that was also the day I began my search for a new comic book store more deserving and appreciative of my business. It's possible you'd get better service if you're more on the game side, or just don't care about the quality or condition of your purchase, but unless you are completely oblivious to customer service, you'll be better off finding another place. You are a definitely a number at Source. They do not care about you or your issues, and most of the time they don't even seem to care whether or not you're there or buying anything. read more

It takes a lot for me to feel impressed by a game store. Usually they all kind of blend together in my brain as one big geeky haven. This being said, The Source sticks out to me for one reason and one reason alone: dice. I know this may seem like a small unimportant facet of gaming culture but to a collector and enthusiast, it is the small things that can make or break an experience. Most game stores offer your staple run of the mill sets of dice and blocks of dice. The Source offers so much more. Imagine bins upon bins of dice in every color imaginable. Every time I am anywhere in the vicinity of The Source I stop in to fuel my collection. Now, don't get me wrong. The Source has a lot more going for it than simply bins of dice. It has a wide variety of games, a pleasant atmosphere, a booming local community, and more. As far as game stores go it is rather nice. I am simply a sucker for dice. read more

Well, let me just start off by saying - Jim Lee. Yup, he was there. And if you don't know who that is, you better ask somebody! Comics? Ya, they have that too. Marvel. DC. Image. Dark Horse. Spider-Man. Iron-Man. Batman. World of Warcraft. Even some that I don't even know about are here. Yes, you are going to find it all here! And if you can't they will get it for you! And games? Magic the Gathering. Yu-Gi-oh. Dungeons and Dragons. The list goes on. And on. And on. Plus, recurring game events in-store make the Source that much more appealing to visit. And I haven't even started on the selection of collectible figures, toys, comic book and game accessories and kits, models, board games, anime, video games, and...aghh!!! Why do I keep coming back? Well, the staff is extremely helpful and know a thing or two about comics. Ya. A thing or two. The breadth is truly amazing. And did I mention that I love their selection? I love this place! They have a huge selection of comics of course, but that is only where it begins. They offer the kind of exceptional retail service that I find to be pretty rare. They are knowledgeable about every product in their store, they are NEVER condescending when you ask questions, and they do things like special orders and holding subscriptions (even calling you to let you know when they are in) for free. The also often hold big events that involve freebies, give aways, free food and soda, etc. which really bring people in the door and help build the great family atmosphere this store has. Also worth mentioning is the fantastic selection of RPG books, board games, hard-to-find DVDs, and general nerd paraphernalia such as swords, action figures, dice, and so-forth. read more

The Source is basically the Target of comics & games. If I can't find something elsewhere, I head to the Source. Hey, that's probably why it's named that! I mostly go for the RPG stuff like books and dice, and to browse for miniatures for my Starfinder campaign, but there's so much more there... comics and boardgames and collectibles. I will say that the storefront has had problems in the past with diversity and gatekeeping, but they've taken strides recently to make sure that there are, for example, more female employees in the store every day to add new perspectives and insight to shoppers' inquiries. I'm just getting back into comics after about twenty years. Nothing serious. Just a fan. I went to Source a few months back and was wowed. Just wowed by the size, the vast selection, and the merchandise. I bought some comics. I looked around. I went back last week and was wowed even more. I went in with a shopping list of recent comics. I was a little disappointed that two semi-recent issues weren't there. Plus, a two-week-old issue wasn't there. What floored me was that the employee I asked, knew what I was talking about. I thought the odds were he wouldn't. The store is absolutely massive. They have games, cards, models, merchandise, and comics. Comics alone have eighty years of history, but this employee knew exactly which random comic book crossover event I was after, even though I had asked for a specific book and hadn't referenced the overall event's name. That was a level of customer service I hadn't expected. Plus, the comics I couldn't find? He ordered. NBD. He said they'd be in by Wednesday. Except I got a call on Friday that one of them was already in. And when I was in, I found another on my list I hadn't found in my earlier visit. (I presume it had been mishandled by a customer, but I found it exactly where it should have been filed. I think they take care of their store.) I wasn't sure I'd be able to get in before closing, but they're open till MIDNIGHT on Fridays. They have great hours every other day. I don't know what else I could expect from my comic book store. It has everything a drooling fanboy may require from all of popular and unpopular comic series, graphic novels, a ridiculous amount of RPG material, model and vinyl kits, various imported schwag from Japan (world headquarters of fandom the world over), card games, and whatever else. Love the new location. Much roomier and up to date. The shelves can actually support the large numbers of books for sale without bending and sagging.The same friendly and helpful staff are still around too. The gaming area is a bit larger too, and I was impressed at the large number of people playing together. Lots of kids playing various forms of different card games. It was still early in the day though, so probably too early for any serious campaigning to be underway. I try to shop local whenever possible. The only thing I don't like about this store is the return policy, in that there isn't one. All sales are final. My three brothers are heavy into RPGs and fantasy books. When holidays and birthdays come around I don't always know exactly what is in their extensive collection. Unless I get a specific list from them of what to buy (which takes some of the fun out), I'm hesitant to just go shopping here on the spur of the moment since I know they won't take anything back. This is my home store. I've been going to the Source for about 15 years now. While I have a lot of feelings of nostalgia for the old store the new location is larger, brightly lit and very well stocked. It is very rare I cannot find what I am looking for here and when I can't find something the staff is quick to offer help searching for your item through vendors and other avenues. I currently only collect comic books and no longer play CCGs however from an outsiders perspective the gaming area is very large and seems prepared to accommodate many players and game types at once. This is my go to comic book store and should be yours as well. Even if there are others closer to you this is definitely a destination spot and worth the trip. read more
