My husband and I are new to the area so we stopped by on a whim. I have been on a waitlist for a certain game with my hometown video game store for over 3 years. While Mr. Zeros didn't have it in stock the owner was able to track it down and order it. I try to buy local whenever possible but my curiosity got the best of me when I got home so I compared online prices. The game was $15 cheaper than Amazon or Ebay. I have read other reviews where people complain that the owner is rude. I didn't find him to be, he was very matter of fact and knowledgeable. The owner of this store has two modes: slightly hostile to downright A@&$!hole. honestly, since they opened in 2009 my family and I have been there about 5 to 7 times and the experience has NEVER been even close to positive. Never mind his laughable vinyl prices. $51 for a used copy of Van Halen's diver down? I don't think there's enough naive people in the Twin Cities to keep the store in business. If you've always thought the record shop in High Fidelity would be fun to visit, go to Mr. Zero's! Albums are mostly organized alphabetically unless there's a connection between artists (like I found an Edie Brickell CD in with the Paul Simon albums). Plus there's boxes of albums to look through and the owner is fun to chat with. If you want a pristine, perfectly organized shop, this isn't for you. But if you enjoy a bit more adventure when you're shopping, then this is the place. read more

Not only is this a crowded, dirty, chaotic store, but the owner ranted about so many things it was hard to keep track of his line of thinking. First, he told us he was robbed twice (this was two years ago) - when my partner and I expressed our condolences for his losses, he accused us of 'wanting details' about the break-ins, and then accused US of breaking into his store. When my partner asked about pokemon, the ponytailed owner then ranted about that/how much he dislikes people who come to his shop looking for pokemon. Now, two years later, he's STILL saying he was 'just robbed' - and yelling at customers for asking simple questions. Either this man gets robbed weekly in a nearly zero-crime neighborhood, or this is blatant insurance fraud. The amount of hatred and disrespect he spewed was shocking - I have no idea why you'd run a store if you openly hate your customers this much. read more

Just left Mr Zeros and I don't understand the low reviews that some people left. I went in the owner was busy but got to everybody quick, asked me if I wanted to see anything out of the case. He pulled out a game I was looking for that I haven't been able to find, I hit 3 other stores this morning and they were all duds. I would guess the flake he gets is from people trying to negotiate and get cheaper prices, I looked at several hard to find items that I collect and they all were priced right where I bought them several years ago. Mr. Zero's has so much potential - it has everything you'd want at a vintage store, including records, VHS tapes, and video game cartridges. Too bad it also has the worst owner of any store in the Twin Cities! His prices are unreasonable, but trust me, it gets worse. He falsely accused a friend of shoplifting, and this paranoid behavior is apparent all over his store. There are post-it notes that say "you touch it, you buy it". One time, I tried complimenting his pet. His response? "It kills shoplifters." Another time, he asked if I lost my gloves at the store. I told him I didn't know, and asked what they looked like. His response? "I SAID, did you lose your gloves?" Go to Electric Fetus instead. Go to Cheapo Records. Or Time Bomb Vintage. Anywhere that will make you feel like a valued customer. 6 reviews a minute ago Unfortunately what I found was illegal. The cash register adds tax, he then says the total price. Which he then plugs into a calculator, then asks if you if a higher total is okay? I asked him why it was more and he said "tax." Realizing that the tax had already been added by the register I asked him to remove the surcharge. I had to walk him through the math. The receipt even gives the total with tax as "SUBTOTAL". Picture of receipt attached. And.... Most of the albums are sealed with tape. He says it's because people switch around the records and steal them. Strange that no other place in the twin cities does this. Picked up an overpriced album that was sealed... silly me. Looks someone used to roller skate across it. to;dr watch for the calculator up charge trick, and honestly, you can get better deals elsewhere. Mr Zero's should have that be it's Yelp score. We are traveling and are trying to find some good game stores so we thought we would give this store a shot. Once we entered the guy at the register rudely said is there anything we are looking and once we replied no we are just browsing he turned the volume up on the music to the point where we couldn't hear ourselves think and he was talking on the phone the entire time. Poor customer service. The place was a mess and it was hard to walk through it. It also smelled really bad to the point where we were getting a headache. I understand shop lifting should not happen but you don't need to post signs saying they will kill you if you shop lift. Will never go here again! I would NOT recommend this place to ANYONE. There hasn't been anything this cool since 15 minutes of fame and Sister Fun closed closed in Uptown. The owner, Richard is very outgoing, friendly, knowledgeable and knows what people want! Very personable, great guy and made a new friend for the both of us. Anyone who knows my husband knows that he's a talker, and knows his products when it comes to old school toys. As trying as it can sometimes be for me who's not a toy enthusiast, I sat and listened to these two until my ADD kicked in. I myself really don't care about the millenium falcon or how Lando Calrissian was the first soul dude in the galaxy or when the first edition Tron action figure was released. It was like watching a toy showdown of knowledge. If I could give this store 0 stars I would. The store was fine and Ik people are talking about over priced items. Which I don't mind paying a little extra for something I've been looking for and supporting a small niche shop. But omggg the guy behind the counter is so off putting it actually made me cringe leaving. When we walked in he did greet us and I let him know what I was looking for.. then I saw there was a bird. Cool a store pet. That's normally a conversation starter. I asked what it's name was... his response "it's on the sign". We browsed a little bit and I did find an album that I had been looking for. When I came up to the counter to pay he sat at his computer and typed for probably a good minute before acknowledging that I was there. And at that time I did see that he had a jar on the counter stating that if you wanted to talk to him you would have to put $ in the jar. Why own a retail shop. Especially one like that if you don't want to talk to people... I will never go back to this place and I do regret purchasing an album from his store. Do not go here. The guy is very personable but in the conversation I told him what I was going through on life. And he told me what he was going through in understand why it's so cold and stand offish. But with that being sad he said hes gonna lose his business when he got when you go in there. But yet he has stuff that's priced Action figures for $14 but when you got up That's not the right price here I'll put the right price on it almost doubled. With that being said if you're trying to make money And you have a tag on something that you're selling for examin the money you should sell it for that price it's not our fault that you didn't go around and rephrase everything. The time before that I was in I was trying to buy some magic cards that said 25 cents piece because I knew my stuff I'd seen a couple that I was gonna buy to make a little extra dough. I went to the register with them and what do you know he started to look them up and he tried to charge me 17 bucks for a night 9 of them that's not 25 cents piece. All in all it's got a poor attitude but really nice toys. My girlfriend and I had just purchased a Super Nintendo and needed a few games so we came to Mr Zeros. We found the games we wanted and decided to get a PS1 also, for 21 bucks we got the system and a controller along with a 2nd free one. Unfortunately both controllers were malfunctioning when we tried to play our games! Thankfully we kept our receipt and returned the controllers and swapped them out with no problems. Soo.. been a few months, more like years. Since I've written anything. However this time I am hoping things will change. It has been some time since I have actually stepped into Mr. Zero's. And I am going to be real with you all. Back then I probably would have given the place a 1 or 2 stars. I didn't really enjoy the experience and being there I felt like a bother. On top of all the dust and musky ish smell. HOWEVER, this time was different... idk maybe it was the fact that I was with a different person. (I went with my ex the first time.. probably hated him and it rubbed off on Mr.Zeros or something.) But imma be real with you. I found what I never would have expected then to have. On top of that. Contrary to other reviews we were greeted when we came in as well and asked if we were looking for something in particular or not. The dust and musky smell wasn't as much or barely noticeable. Lastly, some or the stuff is pricey.. which I get if you know what it is and where it is from... example resident evil 2 action figures... hella old stuff super rare to find. So they were probably moderately priced for someone who is... you know... they need to eat too... So I get it. But this is of items I know of. To each their own I guess. But I guess what I am saying is you can't get everything for free or dirt cheap. Bottom line: yeah I'll probably come back read more

One of the strangest places you'll ever find. I didn't think stores like this still existed! Mr. Zero's is a throwback to the days where KISS wore makeup, you played outside until the streetlights came on, and the phrase "be kind, rewind" was on everyone's lips. The shelves are stocked with everything from VHS tapes to vinyl to Super Nintendo games. The selection of action figures especially is gigantic, but if you're looking for any piece of culture from the 80's, 90's, or early 00's, you can find it here. There's even shirts from Led Zepplin or Grateful Dead tours dating back to the 90's. There's also the most beautiful red parakeet behind the counter that helps ring you up. (I should have taken a picture but didn't have the presence of mind at the time). I only knocked off a star because the prices are pretty high. I'd like an old-school NES to fill the nostalgia shaped hole in my soul, but not for $98. read more

We dropped into Mr. Zero's while we were killing some time and the place was really just kind of weird. On one hand, I see the appeal -- it's a shop that loves anything retro. It boasts a wide variety of inventory, which could loosely be classified as music (vinyl, CDs, cassettes, 8 Tracks and who knows what else), video games for all types of consoles (plus some old-school consoles for sale), clothes and toys. But really it's also the type of place where you just might stumble upon some gem from your past that absolutely makes your day. So why the two stars? First the mood in the store was just offputting. The rock music absolutely blaring over the store's sound system was jarring and didn't particularly make me feel like browsing or buying. While things are organized in the store (with general sections, good labeling, etc), there's also stuff sitting out everywhere. It makes it tough to navigate and also hard to avoid feeling like you're crawling over people and stuff if the store is a bit crowded. Finally, I realize stores like this are probably prone to theft issues, all of the signs all over the store about patrons being on camera really just made me feel like a criminal - not ideal for shopping. Add all of that to the fact that some items were priced ridiculously high (not all, some were priced right), and it really turned into one of those shopping experiences where I couldn't wait to leave. As we were leaving, the owner or employee behind the desk hounded us into joining the mailing list. I felt like he was a bit pushy about it really. I think this store definitely will appeal to some shoppers, but I just wasn't one of them. If you are the type with a soft spot for nostalgia and a love of "dig and find" type shopping experiences, you will probably love this store. Mr. Zeros...where do I start? First of all, this place is amazing just to look around in for no particular reason. They have fun old toys, clothes, memorabilia and records... The thing that stands out the most is the record collection - its huge!! They have a great variety, good prices and pretty great quality records. Got my brother-in-law a bunch of records for under 30 bucks! Definitely visit this place - it doesn't look like much, but there's a lot to it and its right next to Ol'Mexico and Mavericks - so good food is just a step away! read more

Incredible amount of items. Gamecube, PS2, SNES, N64 you name it. Only probably is everything is incredibly overpriced and the guy who owns it is a shifty S.O.B. I would return if prices weren't ridiculous and the vibe wasn't so bad. It's a cool store but the same controllers and games can be bought for a much better price with a more friendly face. Really enjoy this place, got a copy of Billy Joel "The Stranger " on vinyl for $2.00, with original plastic still on it. It looks and sounds like it's never been played. I did buy "The Wall" for $47.00 and I can tell you, it must have touched up or cleaned or whatever because it is an original pressing and there are no pops cracks or anything, it's mint. It's a fun place to hunt for vinyl or any kind of treasures. The place has to stay open , which is why some prices are higher than others. I know I couldn't even find a Billy Joel "stranger" album on Amazon even, let alone for $2.00 Do not skip this place, awesome guy running the place, keep the money local and buy from here!! read more

Mr. Zero himself is a boatload of information about the music scene of the 60's and beyond, I suspect. He obviously loves the music and it shows in his respect and enthusiasm about it. For that reason alone, it's definitely worth a visit. The prices, in my view, are high, and if that were to come down, then the store is a 5.
