Not to be confused with the South Bank Centre, the showbizzy theatre in London, this South Bank Playhouse is a little less glamorous, but with no less attitude.
It hosts plays and shows from its resident drama group, as well as from others who can rent the hall, its lighting facilities and the services of a technician.
As theatre performances go, it's probably one of the most basic, but also cheapest around. The chairs for the audience are a hodgepodge of whatever was lying around, and generally are arranged so that only the first two or three rows get anything in the way of padding. But spare a thought for the performers, who, given that there is no back stage as such, have to stand completely still behind the curtain when they go off stage, and aren't even able to move when attacked by the huge spiders that live there for fear the curtain will billow distractingly and spoil the magic for the audience.
Not being very well soundproofed, airplanes and barking dogs can have an impact on the more emotional scenes being played out, but this is a fantastic place to book for workshops, performances, or to see fledgling NI talent in all its raw and quirky glory. read more
