Go when the tide is going out and you can explore everything left behind on the ocean floor, or come back when the tide is coming in. Watching the water return at the speed it does is a really unique experience. You can check the tide schedule online. We went on a relatively mild, overcast day. The water was cold but not freezing. I imagine on a hot summer day it probably warms up quite a bit since it's so shallow. This was an incredible experience for both of my kids. My one year old loved splashing around in all the little pools the tide left behind. My six year old was completely fascinated watching the tide come rushing back in. None of us were expecting it to be as dramatic as it was. The overall vibe here was great too. People seemed friendly and relaxed, and we enjoyed the atmosphere much more than some of the beaches we visited around Newport the week before.

Unfortunately, this year was to cold to swim. We had swam last year and it was great! There is a Supermarket across the street and the beach not far at all. The motel provides an informative binder. The town center is actually within walking distance for most people about 1/4 to 1/2 miles away. Becareful though, the road in front of the property, at the traffic lights gets very busy. We witnessed a bad car accident while waiting to cross the street, the 1st year. A Continental Breakfast with delicious homemade muffins is served every morning. To be totally transparent and give a 100% honest review these next things were a few minor issues that only happened our last visit. The water pressure in the shower was very slow. No shower liner, (not the problem) the fabric curtian got soaking wet and wet the whole floor, causing a slipping hazzard. The soap and shampoo/conditioners weren't filled. We were supposed to be given a second key that was never dropped off. Had the T.V. shut off at about 10pm while we were watching, out of nowhere. I called the office to let the staff know and got a NOT my problem response, that I wasn't excepting. This year we had tried to book 2 days again, but only one was available. We decide to take the 1 night and pay more then we would have elsewhere. No sure about next year.

It has a snack bar. It has clean restrooms. Keep an eye on the parking attendants! We were waiting so my husband walked in and took a look to find 3 open spots. So if you are waiting maybe scout the lot to ensure there are no open ones. It was crowded when we got here, but by 2 the crowds significantly died down! The tide went out and the kids were able to go out even further! We enjoyed this beach and it was a good option after we were turned away from our first 2-3 beach choices.

If you are just visiting, you will pay $20 for the day to park but you can go in and out several times. Just have the attendant of the day sign the ticket as you go out and show it again when you return. In the winter when it's too cold to swim, there is no lifeguard or attendant and you can go in and out at will. There is a building with showers on the outside to get the sand off before getting in your car. There is no refreshment stand. You can also walk in from the beach homes nearby. We did a summer rental a few years ago and it was only 4 blocks to the beach and no fee to enter. There is no shade at all. People bring umbrellas and even camping tents, especially if they also bring a small child who may need a nap and shade. It was a hot day mid-summer when we were there this year and it was too hot for me, so we did not stay long. It's always nice, though, to sit and watch the boats go by, even if not up to a swim. We and our kids always collected shells here long ago when they were small. My husband still collects shells, though he looks for the more unusual ones still in the water. This year when we were there, it was very busy with families and kids running in and out of the water and having great fun, like our kids had done, decades ago. Whenever we go to Falmouth, no matter the season, we always visit this beach.

Surf Drive Beach is the site of the Old Stone Dock, attacked during the War of 1812. It was once where "packets" (mail ships) set sail. While part of New England maritime history, it is now more subdued. There's decent parking, it's clean, safe, with excellent views of Vineyard Sound. It reflects the seasons. One can watch osprey, gulls, and cormorants. It's more for relaxation than swimming. Beautiful eastern views.

The day pass also gives you access to other nearby Yarmouth beaches. They also host concerts some evenings so there's more going on than just the beach. One thing that really makes this beach unique is the number of seashells. There are thousands of them. If you enjoy collecting shells or just looking for unique ones, you'll have a great time. My son absolutely loved it. We visited in July and there was quite a bit of seaweed in the water so it wasn't the clearest beach. If crystal clear water is what you're after, there are probably better options nearby. That said, we still had a lot of fun collecting shells, building sand structures, and just enjoying the beach. There is also a small concession stand and an outdoor shower to rinse off before heading home.
