I am a huge fan of South Edmonton Common. It's a great place to shop. This is one area in Edmonton that has developed so quickly and it appears that there is no end in sight! Once South Common is completely developed, it will cover more than 320 acres. It will hold around 2.3 million square feet of retail space. If all goes according to plan, South Edmonton Common will soon be the largest open-air retail development in North America. There are already over 100 stores open right now. Yes, you can shop in South Common 'til you drop! But you can also eat! You can go to Earls, Hudson's, OPM, Joeys, The Keg, Fat Burger, Pita Pit - and so many more! They have everything here. If you need clothes, shoes, books, coffee, dinner, a movie, a new TV, a bed, sports equipment, or groceries - South Edmonton Common is the place for you! There is a Walmart, a Superstore, a Best Buy, a Brick, and just about anything you could ask for, all closely put together for your shopping convenience. South Common also holds my favorite movie theatre in the city. It's the best in my opinion! My only complaint about South Edmonton Common is this: Edmonton is cold. When it's cold, I find myself wanting to shop indoors at a mall instead of having to go outside to get from store to store. Other than that, it's amazing! read more

So, understand that Jack G is right on the money when he says that South Edmonton Common is like an outdoor WEM. To me, that's a really funny concept because we're a total winter city half the year. Why would you want to go to a mall that forces you to walk outside and drive around between stores? But somehow, this place works. The great thing about South Common is that it's not just for a girls day out of shopping. There are some great outlets here (Town Shoes, helloooo!), but there are also places like Best Buy, Future Shop, IKEA and Walmart. You might be noticing a pattern at this point that these places are chains, and you would be correct. For all its high points, the low point of South Edmonton Common is that almost every business here is a huge chain. Great when you need stores and restaurants open late, not great when you want to support local. My favourite thing to do when driving down to South Common is grab a pizza at Famoso (turning into a chain, but started local), then catch a movie at the Cineplex across the parking lot. They even have a pizza-and-a-movie deal, which is perfect for an inexpensive date night. I'm a fan, but I say that as a south sider. It's not worth the drive if you live close to WEM or Kingsway. You'll find most of the same businesses closer to your house! read more

I have a love hate relationship with South Edmonton Common. Its a great place with many great stores, some of which are the only ones in Edmonton (such as IKEA). BUT the traffic there can be maddening sometimes! Definitely steer clear of the place around the major shopping holidays! If you have the flexibility to shop here during regular workday hours that seems the best time to access this place. Crowds and traffic are at their minimum so it won't be as frustrating to get around. It's a shame that the train blocks traffic at major exit/entry point to this mall. It can sometimes leave traffic jammed-up for awhile. They do have a smartphone app for all of the stores. The problem is that it sucks. I have tried using it a few times and didn't find it very useful at all. Some of the pins don't exactly match up which do not make them helpful in finding a store in this behemoth of a box store jungle. The promotions tab is supposed to tell you about sales and jobs. Useless. I was excited when I found out they had an app but severely disappointed in its execution. They need to re-do this app. As much as I love to hate this place I do much prefer going here than to WEM, or any other mall. I just wish the traffic was better there but that is a lost cause as I am not sure how they can improve it now. I do wish the had a better smartphone app though. read more

This badly designed, hard-on-the-environment shopping centre is a blight of bad urban planning. With any amount of traffic, it is difficult to make your way from one store to another because, of course, the layout is meant to keep you from walking to more than two stores. The access and egress is so bad. It is hard to believe that the tens of millions of dollars spend on the 23 avenue interchange resulted in such a bad entrance from west. So if the traffic planning wasn't enough to keep you away, I would say the mix of merchants is really dull. It is chain store heaven topped off with that special kind of hell that is Chuckee Cheese. I thought it would be hard to create a mall less inviting that WEM, but they did. read more

My life in Edmonton would probably be twice as boring without South Edmonton Common. Lots of quality stores, great places to eat, and to top it off, an awesome Cineplex, which might be the cinema I've ever been to. The best part is that most of the clothing stores are outlets, so you're likely to see a good sale frequently. H&M, le Chateau, Aldo, Nike, Adidas, Guess...you name it, it's in South Edmonton Common. Seriously, EVERYTHING. Think of it as an outdoor West Edmonton Mall. There's also a Futureshop and Best Buy, so your electronics needs are set. The only problem is that the area it's soooo big. There's so much free space that its Ikea, which is actually the biggest Ikea in North freakin' America, barely takes up any room! Stores are so far apart, so if you're shopping by foot, good luck. It's crazy to imagine that there was absolutely nothing here when I first came to Edmonton in 2000. I'm glad SEC decided to fill that particular void in South Edmonton. read more

I don't really enjoy this place. Although there are a lot of great shops, restaurants and a movie theatre it wouldn't be my first choice to go. It is so big that you have to drive around to get to different places. Unless you want to walk which is hard during most months in Edmonton. I always find that the traffic is really bad in the parking lots and side roads which makes it difficult to get to places as well. For me this makes it less than enjoyable to shop for items or get where I need to go. read more

I love shopping in south edmonton common. The stores here are all ones I like and there are so many options available for shopping or eating. I think many people are turned off by this place because for most cases you have to drive from store to store, unlike in a mall, but the stores are better and it is usually less busy than a Saturday afternoon at West Ed. My boyfriend went shopping here in the dead of winter on one of the coldest days of the year last year for christmas gifts. The place was deserted! He said it was the nicest christmas shopping experience he has ever had. read more

South Edmonton Common is great. It has become the attraction of the south side and that's because there is a lot to do there. When you go to South Common you can eat at one of the many good restaurants, shop, watch a movie, get a haircut etc. It is a great place to walk around in the summer to get some fresh air and new digs. The theater is now the only one on the South Side of Edmonton and it plays all the good movies. I compare it to an outdoor West Edmonton mall. It might not have as many stores but it does have a lot of the same ones and many other great ones. It is great for shopping. read more

One of my favourite things to do is come here for a girls day with my best friend. We usually start early and shop for the whole day, then go to dinner and a movie. When the weather's nice, I prefer it to an indoor mall because it's quieter and I love the fresh air between stores. If my boyfriend and I want to get out, we'll go for an appetizer somewhere and then wander around Walmart for a while. read more

I come here if I have to but the parking and layout is really annoying so I generally avoid it. There is everything you need in one place and some stores are only available here (IKEA/rec room). Great box store location BUT very, very busy on weekends. Not the best for driving sometimes but if you like to walk it offers everything from Superstore to Cinema theaters. Best to come during day! Sales aren't any better than at an inside shopping mall, & bathrooms are sometimes hard to find, so i'd recommend going to one or two places only instead of making this your only shopping stop! I really don't hate South Edmonton Common (or I try not too anyways) but it really has almost no appeal for me. First off I have done the South Edmonton Common experience as both a motorist and transit user and found both to be irritating. During peak hours it can be next to impossible to make left hand turns out of some of the parking lots and alot of the stores don't provide nearly enough parking for the amount of traffic this behemoth receives everyday. However as a transit user the irritation doubles as there are only four routes that go down there (74,78,79,and 59) with each only running every half hour and three of the four being extremely long trips with multiple stops. The 78 and 79 take you through ellerslie and the 74 makes multiple stops in the research park. In an Edmonton winter walking from store to store is miserable making this place one of the least desirable area's to shop in Edmonton for a transit user in my opinion. The line up of stores is admittedly pretty good. There is Old Navy,Bath and Body Works,Ricki's,HMV,Stitches,and Buffalo Jeans outlet just to name a few. The problem here is alot of these stores can be found in easier to access indoor malls in the city. If you have particular favorite brand names like Buffalo or Nike there are alot of outlet stores in this complex which I believe would offer better deals than the normal stores but that is probably the biggest advantage I can think of to shopping here. I only come down here when I need to visit with a south side friend who refuses to make the trip up North and it is highly unlikely that will ever change. If your a south side resident I highly suggest skipping this place unless you want to check out a movie or have a sit down bite to eat whilst shopping. read more

It's definitely not what I expected. It's not set up properly and the stores are so far from the next one. If you don't have a car, it's not worth it. Not to mention there was no coffee place in sight BESIDES Tim Horton's (which was on the complete other side)... Seriously? The restaurants are all squished together in one area.. Normally this is the theatre I go to because I live on the southside, but my latest experience there was enough to send me downtown to Empire theatres. A group of us wanted to check out a movie on a saturday night, and because this is the busiest time at a theatre, decided to take advantage of the AVX tickets. You know - where you pay a premium, but get to pick your seats and can show up just before showtime and avoid the lineups (this was important 'cause my sister just had surgery on her knee and was still using a cane). We showed up to the Southcommon theatre 15 minutes before the movie was supposed to start, thinking this was cutting it close, but wanted to avoid the lineup - and since our seats were already selected, we could walk right in. WRONG! Got past the lobby with no problem only to be faced with a looooong lineup that ran up one side and down the other - and this was 15 minutes before the film was scheduled to start. So we stood in line for 10 minutes and they finally opened the door just before the movie was supposed to begin. Ya, I know, boo hoo had to stand in line for 10 minutes. Well, when you pay the already high ticket price PLUS an added fee for special seating, I get peeved when a service is not provided. So instead of silently muttering under my breath, I as always let the business know when it is losing a customer. I emailed head office and they requested my phone number. I got a call from the manager at Southcommon, and to say this lady was rude would be putting it mildly. She repeatedly told me that it was my decision to stand in line and therefore didn't have a complaint. Huh?!? I'm not sure what my other options were. I guess I could have gone back out in the freezing cold and sat in my car until the movie started and then ran in. I suggested that they schedule the movies better so that they were not cleaning right up until the next movie started and was imformed that head office sets the times and there was enough time. I then asked why they were still cleaning right up until the next show was about to begin and she said it was a very busy night. Ya, I knew saturday night was a busy night at the theatre, but I guess this caught Cineplex off guard. Anyway, I emailed the contact back at head office about the horrible service I received from the local manager and never heard back. The bad service continues. read more

Arrived at 6:15pm on Sat night & we were greeted and given a seat right away. The service was prompt and the food was fresh and excellant. We had ginger bowl & Asian stirfry bowl. Our server Anita was very gracious. The manager Heena continued to check with us. We appreciated the caring attention we received . I should have counted everything before I left. Ordered 50 of everything and some had 38, 41, 18. Copies were blurred. What a mess!! Avoid at all costs!!
