Driving from South Florida to South Carolina for Thanksgiving, we needed a room right off I-95…read more Since it was a quick overnight stay, we wanted something cheap and clean. I was put off by so many negative reviews for hotels in the area so I decided to "wing it" with Sonesta and I'm happy I did! This property checked all the boxes and more. Clean oversized room with comfy queen beds, refrigerator, microwave, walk-in shower (helpful for handicapped person), well priced with complimentary hot breakfast and safe location right off I-95. But the best part is the super friendly and helpful staff. At 1 A.M., we were checked in by the hotel manager Abhi. At 11 A.M., the same gentleman helped with the check-out process. He sleeps there and pretty much work all day and night. Nonetheless he was always friendly and enjoy chatting with all his guests as I witnesses his interactions with guests prior and after me. We left the property feeling not just as long time guests but family. Even his staff working the breakfast area was super nice. Thank you Abhi, we will definitely return. Happy Thanksgiving!

When I handed him my photo ID, he asked if that was me and says, "O, you've gotten [puffs his cheeks] bigger." To make matters worse, he chuckled after this statement. I was stunned that he would make such a comment and couldn't find the words to respond. He needs to attend classes on customer services and proper interactions with customers. This awkward and shocking interaction put a damper on my stay at the hotel. The interior door latch screw is missing in the room, which poses significant safety concerns. There were stains on the wall. I sincerely hope he nor any other staff member makes a guest not want to return. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone ever.

I expected a modest fee, but not be charged an additional 65% of the room price. What I didn't like is that the amount of the fee wasn't disclosed until after doing a non refundable reserving the room and find out at check-in. That just seemed kind of sneaky. I admit, if I saw that it was going to add upwards of 60% to the room price, I would have chosen somewhere else, so it looks like the tactic worked for them because I was now stuck and had to pay the excess mark up. What initially looked like a reasonable deal turned out to be an overpaid stay and inflated commission to the app where the reservation was made. Win, Win, Lose. The hotel and app win at my expense. What would be more customary though, and certainly less tacky, is just take a reasonable deposit of $100, $200, or heck even $500, in case my 4 pound house trained Maltese destroys the room and reduce the mark up fee to maybe something like $25. This way you're covered should my wild beast destroy any property and a $25 fee would be less of a shock to guests. I won't complain anymore than this because at the same time, I'm glad Holiday Inn is at least pet friendly. Other than the unreasonable pet fee, everything was nice. We would stay here again only if they revise their pet fee or if we are traveling without our little Maltese that is house trained and never in her life destroyed or damaged anything indoors or ever even had a bathroom accident. If there are valid reasons to not do a deposit, and charge an extra pet fee, it would have been much better to just list the total price upfront and classify it has a pet rate. Disclosing a high rate at check-in is not cool. I did learn a valuable lesson though: when attempting to book a hotel through a convenient online app, take the extra inconvenient step to call the prospective hotel first to confirm exactly what is their policy of being pet friendly. Does it include a large profit markup fee? A deposit? Or something else? Even though the tone of my review may be negative, thank you Holiday Inn for at least being pet friendly. Please add some transparency to your policy.
