Was on campus for a conference on a Friday and Saturday in Octoboer. The staff were extremely nice. This includes catering, tech support, and the few security guards they had. We were mostly in the JMB, Jerry M. Brockey Student Center and some of the surrounding classrooms. Its not the easiest to find and not the most labeled campus I've been to but if you ask around, people will point you in the general direction. Super diverse campus and because of that, you'll see and feel the culture here. What's kinda cool about this place is that they have a wine academy, a garden center, and an up and coming Automotive Technology program where they are working on electric and hybrid vehicle trainings. read more

If you are using your GI Bill or sending transcripts you might want to look elsewhere. The administration at this college has been a nightmare. Online help is like basically getting no help at all. I know that the coronavirus has impacted everybody, but you guys are a college and an institution that should be devoted to helping students and providing online help when needed. My starfish account has been broken for over a year when the pandemic started and nobody is helping me fix it. They tell you to change your password but my account won't let me change it. So they tell you to contact IT but they never will respond back to you. So you try and join a live chat/zoom but nobody is ever active in there and you sit in waiting rooms for over an hour, so you call the phone but it just brings you straight to a voicemail. Emails takes forever to get back to you. Professors at this school are good, but other than that this school is not it. read more

IN FULL DISCLOSURE: I have been working at South for nearly ten years in various positions. If this affiliation makes my opinion suspect, I kindly invite you to move on to other reviews below. If it makes you think I might have a unique insight to share, please do read on! WHY I LOVE WORKING HERE: The people. Period. South is known for having a friendly campus with people who will actually walk you to an office when you show up lost on campus. Also, the culture is informal, goofy, and lacks all pretentiousness usually found within higher ed. It is also the loveliest community college campus in Seattle with the arboretum and the Seattle Chinese Garden. Plus, I have thoroughly enjoyed getting fat off of the Culinary Arts program which runs two sit-down restaurants, a cafeteria and a wicked pastry shop (all open to the public). WHY IT IS A GOOD SCHOOL AND AN EXCELLENT CHOICE: The people. Period. The diversity of students here is only matched by Highline CC a little further South. I know other colleges claim diversity as well, but South's is a diversity of cultures, socioeconomics, and of neighborhoods (picture it: the yuppie side of West Seattle which includes California Ave and Alki, the "developing" side of WS which includes Delridge and High Point, as well as South Park, White Center, and even Southeast Seattle 'hoods). The students reflect this diversity of neighborhoods. And many programs are known for their caring faculty. As with any CC, you don't have faculty whose interests are torn between you and their research. They are fully hired to teach YOU. The college is, like most institutions, plagued by bureaucracy which does make processes inefficient at times. Hopefully the college will work harder to make these things easier for students to navigate. All in all, I am totally biased, but I think South is a great place to be. read more

Good college if you choose the right teacher -- make sure you get the right teacher. The WiFi is pretty bad, I'd suggest taking a personal hotspot. If you want to use the vending machines you'll need to use a mobile payment (Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, etc.) The library is huge so studying here is great, along with the private cubby tables if you want some privacy while studying, plus the private cubby's have putout outlets, just make sure those plugins are plugged into the wall under/behind the table! read more

Wow, so usually I only review a place if they give exceptionally great service or they are just blatantly rude. I've been coming to South for a little over a year and I have to say my experiences here are great overall. I love the instructors and you can tell that most of them are here and ready to teach. LOVE THE INSTRUCTORS. Hickey's blunt and his personality can be a seem a bit abrasive, but he's is honestly there to help his students. Downs is a great math teacher. Post is helpful. Counselors are great, it is a bit hard to see a counselor when it's around registration time, which is normal. I've only see Virginia Sullivan and Sy Ear and both are very friendly and helpful. Molly Tuttle, I have to give big props to her is one of the most fantastic and easy going financial aid adviser's I've ever met and has made paying to tuition here less of a headache. This review pertains to the Continuing Education side of South Seattle Community College, not regular or graded courses. Perhaps other Continuing Ed instructors are better, but the sewing instructor, O'Lisa Johnson needs a review. She walks the line between teaching you the course that you signed up for while being completely self serving/profiting. At the beginning of class, she'll highlight her side tailoring business. At the end of class, she'll give you coupons to use her business. No thanks, if I'm going to learn sewing, I'll figure it out myself. No way I'll drive to the east side or where ever she's based just to save some bucks on hemmed pants. On the side, she works at Joann's Fabrics, so she gets a discount. That's pretty public knowledge that you get a discount in retail, but she also mentioned it in class. Here's the rub. You have to pay for a sewing kit with basic supplies, even if you have your own supplies. The kit was around $15 and the product was pretty shabby. You know that she paid less because she has a discount from Joann's. As for the kit, the pins were USELESS. I promptly threw them away when I got home. I wouldn't dare touch fabric with the cheap scissors in that kit, either unless it was fabric I completely didn't care about. Way to go. Teach beginners to use crappy products. The right pins and good scissors are crucial. Luckily I had my own set of better quality supplies. Every other sewing class in town tells you to bring your own supplies and does not force you to pay for them from the instructor. If you google the sewing kit, you'll find negative reviews. You can't even return the kit because you are obligated to buy it from her. I took this class in the Fall of 2011, so hopefully she doesn't force people to buy her crappy kit or peddle her tailoring business any longer. read more

To Whom It May Concern; This course did NOTHING to enhance my ability to be a personal trainer professional. I asked this so-called instructor who did NOTHING to instruct me whatsoever to allow me along with Trade Act representative to mandate a LAB environment to be successful. Both the South Seattle College and Trade Act representatives DENIED me again and again over the last 1 1/2 years in three courses in which I obtained an (A, B and A) overall with a 99.7 percent in the last course. This coursework allows me to do NOTHING to be employed in the industry. I would consider the people surrounding this course and the course itself to be "worthless" and a complete waste of my time. Though not as well known as its brethren Seattle Central Community College on Capitol Hill (named Time "college of the year" several years back), this school in West Seattle has several merits of its own: (1) beautiful, unpretentious, green campus surrounded by rolling meadows (that is, if you can imagine them minus houses) and its own Arboretum, which serves its program in landscape horticulture; (2) pleasant library, with a circular ("rotunda"-style) plan; (3) safe, quiet, non-claustrophobic environment (compare to the concrete-encased North Seattle CC); (4) wide variety in the curriculum, e.g., automobile mechanics, etc. I registered for a couple of courses in the horticulture program several years ago, though I eventually had to withdraw (I didn't have problems doing this. The instructors and everyone involved were more than helpful. Though not "cool" by comparison with its central or North Seattle counterparts, I found this campus, by far, to be the most relaxed. Public transportation, though, is rather limited. The Seattle Chinese Garden is adjacent to the Arboretum and will be breathtaking: it has trying, for years, to raise the funds order to build the first Sichuan-style Chinese Garden in North America (Chongqing in mountainous Sichuan province, home of the Giant Panda, bamboo, and very spicy cuisine, is a sister city to Seattle). The community college offered the use of its Brockey Student Union until the Seattle Chinese Garden had a hall of its own built. read more

I must say that I had a really great experience during my time at SSCC. My relationship began at the tender age of 2 or so, when my mom attended classes and I was at the childcare center. If you have children and are thinking about taking some classes, the childcare center at South is GREAT. The staff there are so friendly and, believe it or not, they are the same ones working there from when I went about twenty years ago. Years later, I did Running Start there an had the time of my life. High school was okay, but I loved being able to go between my high school and college campuses, taking WAY more interesting classe at the college, meeting new and exciting people, and I felt totally comfortable there. The campus itself is beautiful, especially in the spring, and I love how open it is with a "university" feel. They have built new buildings since then and remodled some, even, so they're definitely updating their facilities. Being tucked away in West Seattle, but still about a fifteen minute bus ride from downtown isn't bad, either. Even now, after being transferred out and at a university for a couple years, I talk to my friends that also went there and we talk about the "good ol' days" at South. The staff, faculty, and instructors are all so helpful and so caring, and it shows when comparing them to what I see now at my current university. I highly recommend South, seeing as I how it can be somewhat overlooked within the Seattle Community College district. Very cool place indeed. read more

this review is long over due. my experience with sscc suck donkey balls. and i would not recommend them to anyone. period. during my last quarter at the school, i took an online math class with an instructor, i'm not going to mention no names here (initials are "OS.") if you have this instructor, my advice: change your class. this instructor is a douchebag and clearly she does not know the meaning of how "online" class operates. she clearly lacks communication and half-arsed in her teaching. she's rude and obnoxious. don't even think about appealing against her to the school board, they are not going to do anything and you are just wasting your time. i am truly disappointed at the way the school handled the situation. they didn't make matters better, instead they still allow this instructor to continue to teach. read more

Hmmm. I've been to every one of the local colleges I think, and this one is one of the easiest to navigate by far. Great library, great admin staff and in general, an easy process if you're looking for a school to attend. I will say that the teaching staff here is hit and miss, I've had some of the best instructors ever and then a few that were really in the wrong profession. I'd check online to see what others say about them before choosing your classes, it varies widely between the different options and it can make or break your experience. As a campus, it's well laid out, has a bakery and a really great food service option as it's got a culinary school there too. read more

This is honestly the best college I have ever been to. I have attended Seattle Central and Bellevue and this one is the best. The instructors I have in the HMG program are amazing, they are always available to help and I have never received so much support from a school. They're really there to help you succeed and support your before, during and even after the program! Love it and I highly recommend this school. other ratings: the bathrooms are always clean and well stocked. Well lit, only thing is parking is a little narrow in some parts of the lot. As a first time college student at the age of 24 I tried to enroll into SSCC while living in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle. I was very unsure about college and the field I wanted to study and hoped to find some guidance from anyone at SSCC. Instead I jumped through residency loops, was sent to different departments of the school, asked to return for orientations and workshops, given packets of worksheets and due dates for them. Just before the end of it I had heard an instructor of the START NEXT QUARTER program give a lecture to all of us trying to enroll, about how expensive school was explained the limitations the school had to provide useful tools in certain fields (Pastry Chefs according to the instructor, were expected to spend $3k just on books, cooking tools, and aprons). The first time I registered into college was in Portland at PCC. I had no clue what I was doing and expected the least. YET! I was given the best of direction by the staff. I started by grabbing a number like you do at the DMV (how sad the school system has become) but when my number was called I was given the chance to talk to a real live adviser! VERY MUCH unlike my experience with SSCC. They gave me the information needed for registering for classes and how to take my tests. They also helped me plan ahead in what field may interest me and what degrees involved such path. Dont get me wrong I was frustrated as a first time student at the age of 24, with PCC, but after deciding to move to Seattle and try to enroll into SSCC, I thought about jumping off a bridge, after writing an essay to the local media explaining how disheartening my enrollment experience was with SSCC. As a final note, I'd like to conclude with the fact that PCC allows neighboring states the same tuition as residents of Oregon. I was dumbfounded when I found out as a homeless/transitioning person of Seattle, I was going to be charged x3 the tuition as residents of Washington. THINK TWICE ABOUT SSCC! read more

My former biology classmate said it the best, "South Seattle is like the bastard child of the Seattle colleges." I'll start off with the administrative staff. Most of them DO NOT care. You'll find that they are very unprofessional. Rules always change. Nothing is consistent. This goes with registration to the financial aid office. When I first started at South, I knew what degree program I wanted, so I submitted that to the financial aid office. Everything was cool until the next year came around and they tell me that my degree isn't the degree I thought I had, and that I had to see an advisor and have them fill out a academic plan AND write them 2 paragraphs as to why I wanted to change my degree. Well...Hold up just a moment, last year I submitted my degree plan, I even filled it out with the financial services rep. NOW I have to ask for my original degree? Not a big deal but it's annoying especially since it was their error yet its YOUR fault. Financial aid has zero accountability. I will add that the older Asian woman who works in the financial aid office is awesome. The MAST (math/science tutoring center,) has to be the biggest disappointment on campus. This is a place where certain ethnic people come to get their homework done for them. Since tutors are spending so much individual time doing their homework, you'll have to wait long to get help. Oh! and help is mediocre at most. Most tutors speak really fast and move on without asking if you understand. Other then the crappy tutors, the favoritism is the reason why I won't step foot in the MAST. It's just a paycheck for the tutors. There are maybe 2 really good tutors but you have to be quick to get them! Then you have The MALL (math tutoring,) this place is a lot better in quality but I believe its mainly for lower level math courses. I may be wrong about that though. This room has sufficient lighting, and decent tutors. I was very surprised how the environment differed from The MAST. It's nice to see actual math teachers helping students. The AANAPISI (asian/pacific islander) center, is the first place I went for a tutor. I hear this place does good things. But the tutor I saw, not only spoke little english, but didn't know the material. We spent most of the time googling answers but that doesn't help when you're trying to understand chemistry. She was a sweet girl though. Obviously, I didn't have all the teachers at South. So I can't say they all suck or they were all good. If your class is a few times a week, be ready for a fast paced class. If you have a hard time understanding accents, don't take a teacher with an accent. Save yourself that hassle. Ratemyprofessor.com is a helpful resource. A few awesome teachers are: Biology- J.Greene, Math- H. Lyman, Math- K. Llewelyn, Biology-M.Franco (even though people say he is hard. A&P is suppose to be challenging. He has a slick tongue but he is setting you up for success.) There are a few bad apples, but I won't name them. Do you research on the teachers. Find the ones, that are passionate about what their teaching. That's what I look for in quality. I care about the quality of instruction I receive. As far as upholding the standard rules, there isn't any. Students do has they please. There is no respect for smoking. Students smoke and drop their buds anywhere. I'm not sure who or why they put the smoking shelters inside the campus. They should be on the outside of campus. The smoker's convenience is at the cost of the non-smokers health. It makes the campus stink and look more unattractive. The Veteran Services needs its own email and telephone number. It's frustrating to get ahold of them. They need more programs or outreach for Veterans. There are several Veteran's that need some sort of help with their academics or are unaware of opportunities. The Veteran's that I've meet on campus won't even enter The MAST for help (that's how bad it is.) I don't think South understands Veteran's need but they'll sure take their GI Bill. The price of quarterly parking passes is over-priced. Park on the street and walk. The arboretum is pretty cool if your into nature. The landscape is probably better because it's too far for the smoker's to walk to! You won't find cigarette bud's there. Conclusion, the school itself sucks. The overall quality can use so much improvement. It's clear that the tuition and miscellaneous fees aren't being allocated well. I and a few other Veteran's are transferring to Central to finish our degree's there. I want a respectable degree. South needs to take an examples from Tacoma CC as to HOW to run a CC. It's just too ghetto for my taste. read more

So. There are SO many services here that most students don't know about because they don't know where to ask. I am being vague because there are SO many. Really. If there was a miss-communication( or the person you talked to was having a bad day/ not helpful or you couldn't understand their accent/ etc etc)...ask again and try another person. I dropped out because I didn't think I was headed where I wanted to go, don't be shy guys. If you look at how many people drop out before getting an AA and how many more don't take advantage of the programs existing - the reason there is not a high transfer or completion rate is ( I think) not everyone is looking for guidance in the right spot. I know most people who go here already have their life established. You may have a family or a full time job already competing for your full attention, but taking an extra hour or twenty minutes one day (before you start) will save you so much time later. Outstanding Admin office! Very helpful/knowledgeable staff--love all the financial aid people, love the counselors, love all the staff! I am writing this review because I experienced just the opposite with my transfer to Highline CC. What a mistake. I give them 4/5 stars because their nursing program is subpar (not to say anything about the rest of the college... my prereq classes were above satisfactory)--the nursing program is not accredited... the structure sucks (poorly planned)--definitely would not recommend this college for Nursing program (except prereqs). I have been looking at attending classes at SSC or NSC. I have found the staff at SSC to be extremely friendly and helpful. The staff I have worked with in financial aid and in academic advising had gone above and beyond to answer all of my questions. Whenever I have called to speak to someone in any department they have been very polite and helpful. Unfortunately I will probably be stuck attending NSC because the classes there fit my work schedule. The best college ever. I got my culinary degree and then BA in Hospitality Management and loved everything about this college, from its diverse campus and programs offered to its friendly, knowledgeable staff who constantly try and enrich the school and contribute to its growth. The culinary program is one of the best out there and helps students understand the industry at not too crazy prices like some of the other schools in the area such as the Art Institute and Le Cordon Bleu, which might sound good, but in reality not only waste a lot of their product but don't help students get good hands-on experience. Most importantly, South understands that students are taking courses usually to try and become responsible, working members of society without years of college debt, and always helps students with job outreach and financial aid. read more

The kids who work behind the counter are lazy and have given me the wrong book with access codes twice. I've lost hundreds of dollars to them. DO NOT support the bookstore. South Seattle college is a place where you will find teachers that support you and take extra time to help you succeed. The student that go here are super nice and relaxed. In this diverse campus, I never once felt out of place. The classes are not easy, but who would respect an easy college?
