The owner, Bethany, used to be an instructor at my current box; and I owe a great deal to her. Because of her knowledge and positive (yet constructive) feedback while I plowed through my first uncoordinated months of CF, I can say that I am fitter than I've been in years. Hell, I'm fitter than I was when I DID think I was fit. First, you should know that I had become a blob before I joined CF. Really. I got winded going up and down stairs and lugged around 50+ more pounds 1 1/2 years ago, so DO NOT WORRY about your fitness level. It's all scalable, and there are beginner classes to get you started if you're new. Boot camp on crack, is how I would describe CrossFit. You do team workouts, individual workouts but in a team environment, you go for personal records (PR's) from anything to running, to weights, to completing a particular workout in x amount of time. I don't think I've done the same exact workout in a year and half yet! Check out LOFT's website for their hours, fees and WODs (Workout of the Day) as I've only been here once. But, it is helpful for you to know that the entrance is in the alley BEHIND the building. (That poor consignment store lady; she was so friendly in directing people back around the building. I must remember to go and check out her store.) LOFT has lots of street parking around, and they have a small lot in the alley. This place has all the CF amenities you would expect, including a pretty high-up rope! Super-secret tip for any CrossFitter: always wear/bring long socks with you, in case of rope climbs and dead-lifts. No rope burns/scraped-up shins, k?) Aaaaand the people here are super-cool; the community, while growing, is small enough that you get to know people from different boxes all the time. It's how we grow the cult... ...Kidding. Despite what you've heard, you only have to sacrifice ONE baby goat to become part of a box. As I've said before, WOD ON!

They are modifiable for every skill level and each class has a wide variety of abilities - some people are doing ring rows while others are doing strict pull ups and there's no judgment! The coaches are so friendly and make an effort to know everyone's name and introduce new comers. Jonathan knows when to push me to add more weight and when to leave me alone if I am hungover and just want to survive the workout :) I love that they have additional events like hikes and holiday grill outs. I've made so many friends through the gym which is tough to do in Seattle! It takes some time, but the same people go to the same class times, so you start to see familiar faces over time. And there's fun little perks once you join like free in-body scans to track your progress AND a loft space where you can do co-working and hang out with free drinks!

This is the most unethical business I have ever encountered and I felt so extremely disrespected towards the end of my membership. I officially quit because of how the owner of this gym, Robel Woldu, yelled at me, and all I asked was to have a conversation. I was so mortified and humiliated as it was so loud that the entire class, his trainers and his client heard. It was extremely disrespectful that I left in tears. I called the next day and quit and I never received an apology. Looking back, I'm so thankful I quit when I did. I officially had my account and all of my personal data (at least what I had given permission for them to have) removed in July 2022. This gyms branding of being "inspired by the culture for the culture" takes a whole different level of unethics - I do not trust how they handle their customers' data and would advise being very cautious about providing any detailed personal information. I do not recommend this gym and will never return. I sincerely regret my time spent here.

I've never been a "gym guy". I grew up thinking I was too small to be athletic until I rediscovered…read moresports as a young adult. So when I say, "I love this gym", know that it's not coming from somejock who loved working out...and I do love this gym. I had been searching for a form of exercise to replace the activity and community of a team sport after I suffered a ruptured Achilles. I found GLSC through a free trial and had no idea it was going to change the way I thought and felt about fitness. GLSC workouts were the highlight of my week, and over the course of a year, I saw my skills, strength, and enjoyment improved significantly. Here's why I love Green Lake Strength and conditioning: 1) The coaches: Shout out to Coaches Hannah, Zeyab, and Jonathan, who were my first and primary coaches. They are the perfect balance between motivating and moderating, helping you gauge your skill/strength limits and safely push them. They are excellent at teaching form and technique, and they brought my high-school-level understanding of weightlifting up to par. Despite having an injured Achilles shoulder, their guidance helped ensure that I never injured myself (and in fact reduced my pain through strengthening and increasing range of motion) even while greatly increasing my strength and endurance. They can help you improve whether you're a beginner or an expert. 2) The community: GLSC has a vibrant community. Members get to know each other but not in an in-your-face sort of way - you can be a casual weekly member or you can join your fellow members on unofficial hikes and official BBQs and gatherings. There's a very wide range of ages and experiences in these classes, and they didn't make me feel "dumb" or out of place. Classes have been kept to 12 people max, which after experiencing much smaller and larger classes, 12 is a great number - not too crowded but not awkwardly empty. You also get to know each other through the infamous question of the day - just lean into it, it'll be fun, I promise. ;) 3) Facilities/programming: After trying several other gyms, I can confidently say that none of them quite match up to GLSC's programming. GLSC excels because of the three distinct segments of their strenght & conditioning workouts: Warm-ups, skill/strength-building, and WOD. The warm-ups aren't just stretching and jumping jacks - they are specifically design to engage the muscle groups that you'll be using, they help reinforce the techniques needed to complete the rest of the workout of the day, and they get your heart pumping. Other gyms I've experienced rush this part or do the bare minimum. The skill/strength segment is where I learned the most over the last year because they remove the speed element and focus on quality over quantity. Again, the other gyms I've experienced rush this part and either skip teaching altogether or push you into a higher pace too soon. They also offer a wide range of modifications and equipment to meet each person's level of skill and strength. The WODs vary between low, medium, and high metabolic conditioning and are varied in type and style so you're never bored. There's no "leg day" or "arm day" - your entire body will be exhausted every day. They oddly fill you with both a sense of dread and excitement, knowing how hard they will be but also how good you'll feel afterwards. And for what it's worth, the coaches have generally good tastes in music - good balance between pumping you up but not obnoxious techno. A note about cost: It's expensive. But I look at value for cost, not low cost. The quality of the coaching and programming alone is easily worth it in my eyes. Add to that a clean, high-quality facility, fun community, and personal results and I was happy to pay the higher cost. I loved this gym...but sadly had to give up my membership when my workplace moved away. I'm still searching for a new gym, forever comparing it to GLSC and still not finding its equal. Congrats, Nate and team, for building this wonderful gym and community! Hit me up if you want to expand to S. Seattle!

They are not pushing you to lift more than you are comfortable lifting, or more than you can lift with proper technique. That particular muscle group that you hate working on because it's your weakness? It gets taken care of. All workouts are presented in a tiered format so that members of all fitness levels and abilities have something to do. Exercises can be modified to help you improve. Struggling with pull-ups? This is a CrossFit gym full of folks who are interested in getting in shape and improving. It's not full of a bunch of grunting dudes trying to compete in the CrossFit games. I highly recommend it.
