When I moved to Seattle last year, finding the right Crossfit gym for me was a priority. I tried out a few gyms in the area, and Valkyrie was one that I immediately felt at home in. The coaches and the members create a great community making sure everyone feels included, and everyone is very friendly and welcoming! Every coach has a strong knowledge base and the variety of experience they bring means that athletes have access to a range of resources and styles to benefit from. I am overweight. I have been for 15 years. Party due to Crossfit Interbay, I plan not to be anymore. When my wife left to attend grad school on the east coast, I decided it was time to make a serious adjustment to my routine. Eating out and drinking at home would all but disappear, so I wanted to push myself a few steps farther by getting into an exercise program. I've tried many things over the years to varying degrees of success. From biking to lifting, I would stick with things until I hit a plateau. I like those things, especially road cycling, but what I've since realized is that I got bored and/or lost motivation because I was doing it alone. Enter Crossfit Interbay. Make no mistake, Crossfit is a fad. It's one of the latest additions in a long line of exercise regimes that the general public obsesses over. I know this and I was somewhat hesitant to try it because if anyone dislikes fads, it's me. There are people whose physical fitness commitments I respect that enjoy Crossfit, so I decided to look into it with an open mind. Reading more about it, I was instantly attracted to the fact that many Crossfit participants speak highly of the sense of community. Living alone in a new city and understanding my challenges with going it alone, I was immediately attracted to the reviews of CFIB I read on Yelp. Crossfit is every bit as intimidating and intense as it seems. I have never sweat, hurt or hated so much than I have during and the days after Crossfit workouts. Why do it? Two reasons: measurable results and supportive people. I still have a long way to go, but I honestly believe I'm in the best shape I've been in 15 years. I weighed less in college (not by much), but my flexibility, strength and... firmness... are at the highest they've ever been. I look in the mirror and I see someone who visually looks strong. I've also noticed though every day activities, like playing with my nieces, that physical activity is just plain easier. To be clear, nearly all of the men and most of the women at CFIB still blow me away in strength, but I'm the best *I've* been. Then there are the people. You might think working out with a bunch of ridiculously fit people would be scary. You know what? It is. You can't help but question yourself when women six inches shorter than you and half your weight are deadlifting twice as much as you. The amazing thing about the people I've met is they take every opportunity to encourage you to be the best you can be. It's not about who can lift more, run faster or being the most bad ass person in the gym... it's about being the most bad ass person YOU can be. Despite being extremely self-conscious, people have made it as comfortable and rewarding as possible by introducing themselves, cheering me on and praising me for pushing myself. I still don't feel like I fit in, but that's about overcoming 25 years of being overweight and not anything they've done. Really, I couldn't have asked for a more supportive community. So, yeah. I feel like Crossfit is something I want to do for as long as I can do it. I thank CFIB for that. read more

Avoid. If you want bootcamp type training, this is a good option for you. Workouts are just that - more often than not you will find beat down style training to wear your out and burn calories rather than simple muscle building basics that will support your long term goals. Simple linear progressions improving strength week-to-week? Nope. Buyer beware... if you want to look like Rich Froning, you will never do it here (unless you are already are Rich Froning). I joined Valkyrie back in February of 2021 after moving to Seattle in the summer of 2020. I did not feel like I had a community in my new home until I joined Valkyrie. After four years of fitness camp in Atlanta, a move to Seattle last November brought an end to that very good relationship. It brought my fitness level way up and put me in the best shape physically and mentally of my life. Enter CROSSFIT Interbay. We passed the sign every day near our house in Magnolia. Feeling the pull, in December 2010, Paul and I took the plunge. Just when I was thinking that at my age and ability, I would not be able to see huge changes. I had "heard" that CrossFit was much more intense compared to what I had been doing and well, that's true! Not seeing changes after 6 months of CrossFit, not true! Talk about one of those simple decisions that make a HUGE difference down the road, joining CrossFIt Interbay is one my best examples. The workouts are challenging, very challenging but as many other reviewers point out in one way or another, you are competing with yourself, not others. Workouts are scaled to fit when needed and folks look after you! Not just owners Ron and Erin, but your fellow CrossFitters and Trainers Ricky, Val, Seth and Beth. CrossFIt focuses on getting your body working at higher levels and along the way staying fit physically and mentally. There is constant evaluation and other ways to track your improvement and success. The CrossFit community is friendly, supportive and fun! NO ONE gets left behind and everyone gets the support they need regardless of fitness level and goals. I will not kid anyone, it's a constant challenge, but this has helped me grow in many ways and something that I immediately felt during my first week. Keeping it up requires commitment but the benefits are well worth it! We're moving to West Seattle soon but will not be moving from CrossFit Interbay where I am sure we'll continue to develop mind and body. I joined Crossfit Interbay about 6 months ago and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Crossfit is a truly life changing experience and I believe that anyone can enjoy the benefits of it. After participating in the program for about 2 weeks I knew I was a part of something special. I cancelled my "regular" gym membership and have been a member at Crossfit Interbay ever since. The benefits I have received from Crossfit Interbay are astounding. Not only do I see my body looking better, but I can feel my body working better. The intensity of a Crossfit workout will prepare you for anything. Whether you want to have more energy for your favorite activity or you simply don't want to be winded after climbing a flight of stairs; Crossfit will prepare you for that. You'll focus less on trying to "look fit", and more on ACTUALLY becoming fit. Plus, Ron's programming is great. You'll never find yourself bored. The workout changes daily and it is always fun. Crossfit Interbay isn't just about fitness, it's also about community. You can feel a strong sense of belonging and camaraderie every time you walk through the door. You expect to join just to get fit, but you end up making meaningful friendships in the process. There will be times when you struggle to finish a workout, but your fellow gym member's cheers and screams help you through. After moving and having to leave my previous box, I found and joined CFIB. First off, I talked with the owner, Ron, and told him that I had done crossfit before but that I had taken about a year off due to traveling AND explained to him that I only really have a month and a half before I have to move again. His actions: he did not make me go through the fundamental class which saved a lot of time! He did a quick skills review and went over each lift to check my form and overall ability. All of the trainers at CFIB have been incredible (Beth is by far my favorite though) - they push me to get as much training in as fast as I can, while not letting me push myself too far (in the hopes that I won't be SO sore that I can't work out the next day) which really helps me maximize the amount of time I have here. The other members are really encouraging and open as well. Being quiet and the youngest member by far was a little intimidating at first, but everyone (including the trainers and the members) made me feel welcomed and important- I look forward to workout out at CFIB! The only reason I gave this place a 4/5 is because of the Sunday schedule. The only time they have class on Sundays (during this period of time- may be subject to change) is at 11:30am. I wish there was an 11:30 and a 5pm class so that church goers had a little bit more wiggle room. That said, it's not a big deal at all! Rest days do the body good. As for a quick schedule: on most days the have 8 regular classes spread throughout the day, 2 yoga and mobility classes, and 2 fundamental classes. (Again, this is the schedule during this time. I've been a member of Crossfit Interbay for about a month now, and I'm so thrilled that I found them! I have to admit, I did a fair amount of "box scouting" before finally finding a fit, but I'm so glad I took the extra time to pick a place that I really enjoy. I love the fun, goofy atmosphere and supportive environment - with CFIB you're not only challenging your body (and mind) in a lot of different ways, but you're also developing friendships and creating connections with those around you. I've had experience with Crossfit in the past - both as a participant in college at CF Spokane and through my family members who own an affiliate in California - and I can honestly say that Ron, Erin and the entire CFIB staff have far exceeded my prior experiences with any CF I've visited. The workouts are tough, but I always leave feeling accomplished, stronger and (confession) a little superior to all my Zumba-loving friends. I also want to call out their strong focus on proper technique and safety - I always know they're looking out for my best interest and are truly trying to educate me about how to life the proper way, versus being completely time-focused like some of the other places I've tried. More than anything else, I really enjoy Crossfit because I feel like I'm doing something that is greatly benefiting my health (of course), but also my attitude and mindset in general. I look forward to CF after a long day at work and it's my one hour where I just let all the stress of the day go and do something for myself. I rarely have a hard time getting motivated to go because I truly do enjoy my time there. If you're looking to do something that will challenge you, probably make you cry at least once, and overall improve your quality of life, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend CF Interbay. read more

If you asked me a few years ago if I ever thought I would step foot in a crossfit gym I would have said you were crazy. But, I got roped into doing some at-home workouts during the pandemic and decided to come try it out at Valkyrie and never left! The people/community here is without a doubt what made me stay. The coaches are all amazing and unique in their own coaching styles. As someone who had zero experience with lifting or working out in general, it was super intimidating to start, but all of the coaches were so helpful and contributed greatly to the progress I have made. I joined CFIB almost 3 years ago as a complete non-athlete and it's one of the wisest investments in my personal well-being that I have ever made. From the beginning, the atmosphere at CFIB has been supportive and non-intimidating. Aleta and Kyle and their team of coaches provide programming that challenged me as a beginner and continues to kick my butt as a more seasoned athlete. If you want results, you have to work for them ... and I assure you that you will definitely work here. The workouts are demanding, high-intensive, competitive and most importantly, safe and fun. It's a well-rounded mixture of cardio, gymnastics, weights and functional fitness. The coaches here place an emphasis on form and safety, and the classes tend to be small enough that you'll be given helpful advice and encouragement. I have been a member of Crossfit Interbay for over a year. I got started based of a friends recommendation and can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I have made. The owners Erin and Ron and the manager Beth are awesome and very knowledgeable on proper techniques and know how to push you to your limit. The members there are very friendly as well and it feels like a close knit community. After a few months I noticed a substantial increase in my strength and stamina. My previous 5K time was around 26 minutes but was able to bring it down to around 22 minutes. I will recommend Crossfit Interbay to anyone. read more

CFIB is my second family. I've been a member since they opened last year and I couldn't be happier with the results. It's been great to see so many people new to the CrossFit program grow by leaps and bounds in their first 6 months. A few comments: -If you're new to CrossFit, it may look intimidating. Especially if you don't know your way around a gym or have tried the globo-gym thing and been "approached" on doing this or that wrong. Don't let that experience or what it appears to be stop you from trying it out! The movements are covered by one-on-one training in the intro-classes. ALL movements can be scaled to your ability. Don't worry if you can't do a pull-up! CrossFit was designed to get everyone involved. Check out the videos on the Interbay website. There are plenty of "first" pull-ups and muscle ups. It could be you!!! -Programming is important. If you're coming from another box (gym) or follow crossfit.com mainsite programming, you may have gotten a lot of random metabolic conditioning workouts under your belt. But without a long term goal, progression is slow and does not focus on your weakness. I've talked with the co-owner, Ron, who does all the programming. There is a focused effort on strength gains and building skill. These make any metcon easier. -The members are amazing. Everyone encourages everyone else. We are a strange bunch. Name the profession, someone does that at our gym! There is a ton of positive energy in this small box. No BS, no judging, no backstabbing...we're all here to work out and have a little fun in the process. -Ron and Erin are amazing owners. Plus it's great to see them getting destroyed during workouts along side you. What other gym does that? -This is Seattle...you can't throw a stone without hitting a CrossFit gym. Try a few out. It has to fit your personality for it to work long term. Some gyms are much bigger, but bigger is not necessarily better. At Interbay, you will have a better chance for individual attention due to the limited class size. CrossFit started in a garage...there's something authentic about the feel of working out hard with a small group. -Ignore the Unicorn talk on the Interbay website. Insert your own animal (Tiger, Bear, Wolverine, etc). Some people's power animal have mythical powers and fairy dust. Like I said before, we don't judge 'em! read more

Crossfit Interbay is awesome from the coaches to everyone else in the gym. This was my first experience with Crossfit and they were extremely resourceful when it came to teaching me the different techniques and lifts that go into the training. They always worked with me to find the perfect balance of strength and condiitoning. They make sure you are working from the bottom up to avoid injury and trying too much at once. There are some really great athletes at this gym, and everyone is focused on getting better. The team feel was my favorite part, as you're always working with others to accomplish personal goals. If you're looking for a gym to get started with Crossfit, I would highly recommend Interbay. I was a competitive athlete my whole life, then I got injured and was forced to take months off. For years afterwards, I struggled to accept the fitness I had lost and really get back into something (I probably joined at least 8 gyms!)... Crossfit Interbay is the first place I've really felt comfortable. Crossfit Interbay feels like the opposite of the ticket corporate vibes so many gyms in the city have - I feel like it's almost a family, people you can count on to not get too serious and be pretty much unconditionally kind and encouraging. I joined CFIB coming off of a serious knee injury with the goal of getting stronger and building up my endurance. They have not disappointed!!! I joined CrossFit Interbay about a month ago, and it's been the best workout experience I've ever had. CrossFit Interbay is lead by Ron Onyon, his wife Erin, and adjunct trainer Dan Cerrillo. Ron's CrossFit instruction is informed by a world-class Tae Kwon Do coaching career and this is reflected in his ability to dynamically tailor the workouts for the group while simultaneously proposing scaling techniques based on an individual's current level of ability. Read the reviews of other CrossFit gyms in the area and you'll see this is not the case elsewhere. Erin is equally as attentive and provides individual coaching, encouragement, and always-helpful tips. Ron and Erin work as a unified team and foster an incredibly positive and encouraging environment. Great CrossFit workouts require more than just trainers: it's just as critical that the members participate and support each other. CrossFit Interbay's leadership has attracted a fantastic group of members; diverse in terms of ability, ages, experience, and gender. It's a welcoming and supportive environment filled with laughter, shouts of encouragement, and yells of "good work." Members are quick to offer encouragement and tips. CrossFit is really difficult, but the members and leadership at CrossFit Interbay make it well worth the pain and sweat. In fact, the community formed in this gym is reflected in the comments on the website and even the formation of new friendships outside of the workouts. The gym may not appeal to all as it's not as big or fancy as some of the other CrossFit gyms in the area. It's run like a small and friendly family business. The gym's leadership seems to attract members who want to work hard, have fun, and enjoy the experience. As a result, competitive CrossFitters might be more comfortable elsewhere. The gym has exploded in terms of members and number of classes, and as a result some workouts can be crowded. I needed something other than the standard gym experience, and CrossFit Interbay delivered. If you're looking for intense workouts, you're willing to push yourself, and you like team-environments, CrossFit Interbay is for you. I have no reservations in highly recommending CrossFit Interbay. EDIT: 5/16/11 - So it's been seven months and sixteen days since I originally joined. I had originally rated Crossfit Interbay four stars (I don't believe in five star ratings). However, it's an amazing place. I continue to be impressed by the caliber of the trainers (there's a number of them now) and how supportive and awesome the other members continue to be.
