After playing here a couple times over the years, it was frustrating to play as the course was in rough shape. We gave it another shot and it is 100 percent better than previous years. The layout of this course is pretty nice. The lack of course maintenance is astounding. The fairways are wildly inconsistent with dead spots, large patches of clover and even a few rocks sticking out of the ground. The greens were actually in decent shape on most of the holes. The rough is pretty much all clover which, if you play you'll know, can be impossible to hit out of. The "pro shop" sells standard beverages, hot dogs, bratwurst etc... and the prices are good. The layout of the parking area is absolutely atrocious. The driving range is right next to it with no protective netting to stop errant shots. You can't drive your cart to your vehicle to load or unload the cart so you have to walk a couple hundred yards up hill in gravel if you can't get one of the 10 spaces close to the clubhouse. I wouldn't come back here if it was free. They did provide water on the course, but most of the cooler spouts were filthy. Oh almost forgot. If you have any kind of back problems you'll want to avoid this course or walk it. The cart paths are non existent on most holes, it will only be there a few yards off the tee then it's just grass or dirt with a ton of harsh drops that you can't see until you've already rattled your spine. For $66 on a Saturday I'd just as soon go somewhere else and pay a few more bucks. read more

South Wales has a very unique hole setup where the front nine is fairly flat shorter whereas the back nine is hillier, longer and wider. Very friendly staff and the maintenance staff works hard to keep the course a pleasant round of golf. read more

Eight of us--friends since middle school--drove over 1.5 hours each to meet up at South Wales for what was supposed to be a memorable golf day. What we got instead was a disgraceful excuse of a course and shockingly unprofessional treatment. The greens? Buried in sand and barely playable. The service? Rude, belittling, and targeted from the minute we arrived. We complied with their request to split into groups to respect pace of play. Then, when a torrential downpour hit, we did what any rational golfer would: took shelter and waited it out. When we regrouped and continued play, they were ready and waiting to jump on us at the turn--clearly looking for a reason to kick us out. They ejected our entire group after only 9 holes, refused a refund, and treated us like we were somehow the problem. Not only was the course in horrendous condition, but they charged us full price with zero accountability for the state of their grounds or their behavior. This wasn't just bad customer service--it was targeted harassment and blatant disrespect. Save your money. Save your time. There are too many great courses in Virginia to support a place that treats paying customers this way. read more

South Wales Golf Course? More like South Wales Trauma Center. My guys pulled up with fresh gear, positive vibes, and a dream of shooting low. They left broken, humbled, and questioning their life choices. I've never seen such a beautiful place treat people so disrespectfully. The fairways were tighter than a VPN on government Wi-Fi. The bunkers? Basically sand traps built by Satan himself. And the greens? Let's just say putting on them felt like trying to sink a ball on a frozen trampoline during an earthquake. These dudes talk golf nonstop in Xbox parties. Every swing analyzed. Every tournament recapped. Every missed opportunity relived. They live for this game. So watching South Wales take their soul like that? Hurt me on a spiritual level. I dont even play golf but im here to, slide for them. Rain, shine, triple bogey -- doesn't matter. Decent public golf course with good rates. Greens were nice and course was pretty well kept. Some pretty long par 3's in my opinion (200+ yards from box) as we were playing from the white tee's. Good pace, with an occasional deer in the background. Can't say much for the food options as I was running late for my tee time. read more

Probably the worst golf course I've been to. Terribly kept greens (entire green was sand), puddles throughout the fairway, sleepy joes at the pro shop were unprofessional. The course layout is an interesting challenge. Greens are in pretty good shape. Medium speed but they roll pretty well. It looks like they have warm seasoned grass in the fairways and on the Teebox and it hasn't come in yet. The people were very pleasant here. The pace of play was great 3:45 for a 3 some. New carts. It was a very traumatizing experience not only for me but mainly for my son. I decided it was time to take my son away from top golf so that he could get a better experience with actual golf. There was a small group of older men behind us who seemed to be a little frustrated with how slow we were moving but I would never rush my son, I wanted him to have fun. Well on hole 5, things seemed to escalate. My son completely missed the ball when swinging off the tee and I heard the group behind me snicker and one of them loudly whisper "I hope this boy never plays professionally, he is awful." I approached the group and asked him to repeat what he said, they backed down and apologized like good boys. I could smell the alcohol on them so of course they were drunk. Way later in the day after we finished our session I proceeded to tell two people who worked there about the situation, they looked at my son and started laughing and closed their window right in my face. I had to carry my son out with tears rolling down his face, this situation will forever haunt him. Is this how the golf world is outside of top golf? I will never take my son here again. I DO NOT! DO NOT! recommend this place, especially if you have children. read more

Course is trash, you get drunk assholes throwing your ball in the creek, if you were to try to adjudicate any of these actions you're told your wrong. And yet the three drunk assholes that had CASES of miller lite get off scotch free even though the clubhouse doesn't sell CASES of beer you have to buy them individually so I get kicked off the course because of drunken assholes that skip ahead of you while you're on the green putting and when bringing it up with them they said I was playing too slow and blah blah blah. I got frustrated enough that I forgot my driver at hole 8 so drove back to get it giving them ample time to make progress but what do you know at hole 11 I'm stuck behind them again then told by the clubhouse that I'm kicked off because of those assholes. I was also supposed to start working there on Monday but because of those drunken fucks I lost my job read more

This course has come a long way in 2 years! I have been golfing at this course for 2 and half years. Last year I primarily played here because it was the closest course to me however I moved about an hour away and still choose to come out and play often! The staff is so nice and welcoming. The fairways look great, the greens are smooth and clean, and the course is so quiet and peaceful. I highly recommend you give this course a try! Good value, nice layout, conditions are slowly but surely improving over past years

Went to play South Wales Golf Course over the weekend. I have been playing there off and on for over 20 years. Back in the day I considered this one of the best public golf courses in the area. Unfortunately between 2008 to 2014 the course suffered some setbacks and closed it's doors for a almost 2 years (2014 to 2015). After hearing that it reopened, I decided to give South Wales GC a try (2017). I will say, at that time there were issues that still needed mending. When speaking to the Pro Shop Manager in 2017, he indicated that the owner was putting in place many improvements that were to bring back the days of old for South Wales GC. Well, I am here to say, that statement was true. The golf course is back on track and heading in the right direction. It's not the country club course yet, nor the country club prices, but give it time and it just might be. I was very impressed on the conditions of the course just coming out of winter. The greens rolled true, the new Bermuda fairways were coming in and hitting your ball in the rough is not a stoke penalty. The staff at the Pro Shop were a pleasure to deal with, even saw the same Manager that I spoke to in 2017, still managing the operations. One area of it's operation that impressed me was how they where managing the social distancing and sanitation procedures during the coronavirus outbreak. Kudos, job well done! The course over the last 6 or so years went to cow pasture like conditions and it was never in that great condition to begin with. Today on a whim I decided to give the place a try since it is really nice layout. What a pleasant surprise. For this time of the year it was in really good condition. Most greens were excellent as were most fairways. The sand traps were in the best condition of any course in the area I have played this year. The place has made a night and day recovery from previous years and is a great value for the money. It isn't in US open venue condition but then neither are most other courses in the area. I'd recommend this place to anyone wanting a reasonably priced, good layout, good condition, playable course experience. I'll definitely be back. read more

Don't waste your time or money. This is by far the worst course in the area. Don't know how they stay open. We left after nine holes. The fairways are horrible, the greens are fair to poor , terrible tee boxes. A big disappointment as the location is convenient and the area could use a good local public course. Played here for the first time in 2-3 years. Back then they were just starting the transition to new grass and it was in bad shape. I was shocked how much of a difference there is. Welcome home, old friend! The same incredible layout that it's always had...but now under the new management it also brings a reasonable price, solid shape, friendly staff, and cheap beers. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best overall experience and value among courses in the area. The real shining star here is the layout of the back nine. Don't get me wrong, the front nine's solid, too...but the back nine is truly a gem. In fact, the 11th, 12th, 13th, 17th are some of the best golf holes I've played anywhere...and the 18th is literally the best finishing hole I've ever played. The 19th hole? What's not to love about sitting in comfortable chairs on a large, beautiful deck, drinking inexpensive beers while overlooking a wonderful course? What's not to love? Nothing. I'll be back. Great course!!! Played today 2/25/17 price very reasonable and excellent conditions for February. Course told us the are installing Bermuda grass in April and are continually improving the course. Have not played course in years, didn't know they had opened back up under new management. Fairways very wide and greens roll well. read more

South Wales is one of the only public courses in the area. The course itself is very long and I absolutely love the layout It appears this course is under new management and they are investing a lot of time in updating the course. One of the very best layouts in the northern Virginia area -- public and private courses included. An Ed Ault masterpiece. Awesome front nine -- and the back nine is as good as it gets. Tranquil, scenic setting in the foothills of Virginia. Course is in solid condition. Price is, frankly, waaay too low...after your round, you'll feel like you're stealing. Very friendly, accommodating staff. Fantastic clubhouse and deck, elevated over the 18th green. You play here once, you'll be hooked. I used to play a regular rotation of public courses, but now, this is literally the only course I play. This place is so perfect it actually makes me hate other courses. read more

This course was probably the top 3 WORST courses I have ever played on. The fairways were in atrocious shape. The greens had a nonexistent fringe and uneven speeds on different holes. There was crabgrass everywhere. $42 for 18 holes? My backyard was in better shape than this course. Re-evaluate your price for the quality of this course. read more
