This place is super popular with locals, expect kids even at late evenings, and is much more a sports bar socializing atmosphere- not a serene spa! I can see why it's loved and a great community experience, but it isn't my speed. The facilities all seem to be in good order- cold room, hammam, hot tubs, pools, plunge area, infrared, steam saunas, you DO have it all right here and can stay for ages including BYOB with many groups just drinking and rotating around while relaxing with friends. The atmosphere is cacophony- dozens of signs from different times and different fonts and different warnings plastered on every single surface. Hallways are small and dark. You have slippers and robes and towels easily available and everything you get is well priced. It's simply too loud for my spa preferences. It was odd who was asked to hand over phones to keep behind the front desk and who was not. And the shower in the ladies bathroom IS in bad shape. But I can see why it's hard to find parking during peak times and will be a go to place for many. read more

However, the staff began rushing us to leave significantly earlier than the posted closing hours. They started turning off the lights, stopped the music, and began cleaning right around us. It was clear they wanted us out -- despite the fact that we were still well within the allowed time. When we calmly questioned this and asked for an explanation, instead of engaging in a respectful dialogue, the staff called the police. Let me repeat that: the police were called simply because we were present during business hours and politely asked why we were being pushed out. It was humiliating, absurd, and completely uncalled for. I have rarely seen such blatant disrespect toward paying customers. An establishment that calls the police on well-behaved guests does not deserve even a single star. This kind of behavior by the staff is shameful and shows a complete lack of professionalism. I strongly recommend that management urgently review their service standards and retrain the staff. My friends and I will never return -- and I do not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Southampton Spa is like an oasis to go to that just so happens to be at the top of Philadelphia. Very welcoming! Just amazing. My best friend and I visited and stayed all afternoon. Chilling in the whirlpools. Sweating in the steam room. Glowing like lightbulbs in the saunas. And the Turkish bath room felt like transporting from Philly to Turkey in one afternoon. Service was excellent. No complaints. From the front door the staff explained how the place works. You get locks and keys to lock up your valuables. Items are charged to your key number. No need to carry money or charge cards as you enjoy the facility. Food! Plenty of water, beer, and soda to buy. When you buy a meal you are getting a meal. Lamb. Shrimp. Steak. Potatoes. Salad. Well cooked and tasty great. Be aware that you must wear slides/flip-flops at all times because there is water and slick surfaces everywhere. Don't stress about it, just relax in your white robe and towel and walk slowly and carefully. Remember, you are at Southampton to enjoy, sweat our your worries, and kick back. Umm... JUST GO! It's $60 for the day and they give you a robe to wear, slides, and towels. Do wear a comfortable bathing suit. When you sit in the sauna, remember you are sharing space with others, so don't take any clothing off. Oh, and this is even better with friends so get people together and go relax for an afternoon. I've gone to this spa a few times now. It's really a great thing to have in the area. Unfortunately, I can't quite recommend it. Unless you only plan on using it in limited ways. Staff hospitality is mixed. Some are friendly and will actually smile at you and others are cold and scowl at you. The site is not updated. If you go to it to find out what services they offer it will not be a reliable way to get this information. Call ahead and ask before you show up and find out in person. There are several rooms and good options there: multiple saunas (from "normal" temp to burn your eyeballs hot), a steam room and a hammam, a cold room (snowy walls), showers (normal and pressure), a regular swimming pool, an ice-cold plunge pool, hot tubs, tables around the swimming pool, a lounge inside and outside, and a cafe for food. For this, I'd give 5 stars. But there is a serious problem that needs to be addressed: the wet rooms (and possibly the pools and hot tubs) are not being properly cleaned and smell strongly of mildew. The first time it happened it was mentioned to staff. They investigated but didn't seem to care. But the times I've gone since it's the same problem. So it seems they do not care that their patrons are breathing in mold spores--deep into their moist, spongy lungs. When I leave my swimsuit, hair, and even skin smells like mildew. This means you have a serious mildew problem. If it's not addressed properly you will have a health problem. Unless they start sanitizing the rooms/pools/tubs safely I'm not coming back. I enjoy the steam rooms quite a lot so not going into them means I would be paying $60 for a few saunas (only one of which I really want to use) and a cold room. I can get those needs elsewhere for much less. It's a shame they don't seem to care because the rooms are really nice. The hammam in particular, with its marble walls, floors, and sinks, deserves to be treated with more respect, as does the spa's guests. read more

Took the day off work on a week day to come with some friends, including one who's been here before and gave us the run-down. I'd only been to Korean spas before and this was a different experience with the unique decor. It seemed like most of the customers were European men. It's $60 admission for up to 4 hours and then there's a $15 fee. There's separate locker rooms for men and women and then everything else is coed. They provide robes, towels, and sandals but I brought my own flip flops. If you wear contacts like I do I recommend going with glasses instead or wearing goggles so they don't dry out, it was painful in the wet/dry rooms with extreme temperatures. I think I would have lasted longer if not for my contacts. We went between hot and cold rooms, I did kind of like the Hammam room that was really steamy, you could eucalyptus (it was super strong) and also pour cold water on yourself but I don't think it's for everyone. I think some of the rooms were above 200 degrees and I could not last long in those! Generally other patrons were quiet and respectful in the rooms, some seemed like regulars who come by themselves and then you could just tell who the new folks were because they were louder or trying to figure the place out. It apparently used to be a roller rink and the main area just looks like a pool that barely anyone uses with two small jacuzzis on one end. This is surrounded by tables and seating for folks to rest, watch TV, order or eat food, etc. Although their signs say no outside food and drinks you definitely need to bring water to hydrate because there's no fountains and their menu isn't cheap. I also saw some folks shamelessly bring a lot of packed food out of a cooler to eat and I wish I had thought of that, but we ended up ordering food off their menu. The pierogis were $15 and tiny, nothing special. I liked their chicken kebab though and whatever sauce came with their fries (sorry I don't remember the price). You charge the food to your key/number they gave you when you entered. This place has A LOT of signs it's a bit much and I don't know if I'm remembering them correctly--anyone under 21 must be chaperoned for massages, no abusive language, anyone 12 and under has a time limit in rooms, fees for needing another robe...I probably paid more attention to them than the average person lol Just make sure you are aware of their policies so you aren't surprised by any extra fees. Overall, a good experience. Not fancy compared to other spas that are out there, and I feel like if I came on a weekend with more folks I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much...but I definitely left feeling super relaxed. The reception area and those behind the desk are not overly polite or overtly welcoming, though not rude either, I'd say very to the point. They give you a quick rundown, give you a lock, point you to your starting place and send you back. It's one of the hottest saunas I've ever been in, I loved it but if the heat's not your thing the less intense options are plentiful. This was the silliest and most fun activity for a girls day (or a boys day - actually ran into some of the guys just enjoying a birthday here in one of the saunas). This is a traditional Russian spa with around 12 rooms to explore and complete a water circuit. It's a little dated and not the cleanest (not uncomfortably, just used by public) but that just adds to the vibe. This place is authentic. We had so much fun trying the hot rooms, then the ice bath, then the shower, then the cold rooms, and feel like we learned some things about the culture. I was able to enjoy borscht by the pool in a fancy towel, meet some new people as the saunas spark conversation, and have fun! A hidden gem for relaxation! This place is randomly located next to a daycare and appears to be a regular storefront from outside and upon initial entry. For a reasonable fee, you can spend up to 4 hours cycling through their water circuit via rooms that are inspired by a Russian and Turkish baths. While we, as women of color, were the outliers, the guests were extremely friendly and welcoming. A kind guest gave us tips on what rooms to use first and how to ease into the varying temperatures. Another guest brought us towels when he went to get one for himself. The front desk attendant gave a brief overview during check-in, but we felt the returning guests/members were the most helpful. Some signage or a small cheat sheet for newbies would be nice yet somehow part of the appeal is exploring for yourself! My fiend and I loved the steam room and it was a good place to start with the heat. We ended with a circle through the jacuzzi then the pool. The showers in the ladies locker room were clean so we took a quick shower before heading out to have dinner. I hope to return soon and possibly get a massage next time. read more

I wasn't really sure what to expect at Southhampton Spa, but it was authentically Russian. It was a pretty solid deal where you can spend $50 to get in and then also get amazing Russian food once you're inside. There were plenty of spa rooms to try out with a steam room, a wet heat, a dry heat, an ice room, a jacuzzis, and an ice pool, and plenty of cold showers. It was a little hard to get a table since we had a bigger group, but we were able to corral a few chairs and tables to feel comfortable. I felt completely refreshed after this visit and it was a nice way to pass a day especially when it was gloomy and freezing outside. read more

I can't believe I didn't go here sooner! It's $45/person for admission. There's about 6-8 rooms that you can relax in. A pool and two hot tubs when you walk in. The locker and shower room seem pretty clean. The overall exterior and interior isn't that fancy or attractive but it's def nice to go and relax. It's BYOB and you can stay there as long as you like. They also serve food/snacks there. You don't have to worry about paying for food on the spot, they'll charge it to your number (your locker number). I think that's convenient so you don't have to carry your money everywhere. They offer you a lock so you don't have to bring your own. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Nice place to go for half a day if you like steam rooms and saunas. You give one of your belongings at the front desk and they lock it up then give you a lock and key to store your personal items in the locker room. There is a Russian dry room, Russian wet room, steam room, sauna, salt room, ice room, Turkish bath room, ice cold showers, and cold small bath to dunk in. There is also a jacuzzi near the pool area and a pool. Shower in the locker room did not have hot water (maybe because so many people showered already, I'm not sure.) Some tables around the pool for you to eat snacks or meals or just take breaks between the different rooms. This place can get very busy and when I went it was so busy they were completely out of towels and robes which is very inconvenient. A few of the soups and meals that we wanted to order off the menu were also not available. The potatoes with dill took over 30 minutes to be brought out and were barely warm. Kids were doing cannon balls and splashing in the pool even though signs said no jumping which made it a less relaxing experience. Overall, for $45 it's nice if you come at an off peak time when there aren't a lot of kids, plenty of towels/robes, and they aren't out of food and hot water. read more

This place is amazing, so many things to do! Jacuzzi is perfect , a huge pool, lovers rooms, showers, cold iced pool, cold room, sauna rooms , and all the rooms are so relaxing! I can spend hours here and all the staff are very friendly and helpful. They even serve food here and it's a long menu. I always order the mint tea and the Greek salad and I ask for the beef and the olives on the side which is nice they can accommodate what I ask for my food. Kinda mixed review here. I could give 5 stars and i could give 2. I went 1/22/2024. If you want a short read, skip to the summary at the end. Here's what's great about it 1st: 7 saunas, each different, all amazing. They seemed clean. The turkish Hammam sauna was 100% humid, all tiled or marble. Marble sinks with basins to douse yourself with. Amazing. The infrared sauna was hotter than any I've ever been to. My toenails started to feel like they were burning! I kept coming back in small doses. There's a wet russian sauna and a dry russian sauna. Both hotter than the infrared! In one of them I got a fantastic beating (platza) with a broom of oak leaves (venik) by Andrij, the excellent & super professional masseuse. Amazing experience. So incredibly hot in there that you step out and douse yourself in a torrential shower of ice cold water several times throughout the treatment. I have never been so completely relaxed, mind and body. He sat me down at a table and clearly I understood I'd better not move for a while. There's also a sauna with frozen walls, like the inside of an old fashioned fridge freezer. The hot & cold alternation is brilliant, ancient, and fabulous. My husband got a deep tissue massage with cupping by Andrij. Had that been all we did, it would've been a grand, 5 star experience, even though there were many disappointments. Lounging around the pool in swim suits (plenty of robes, towels and slippers provided), eating, chatting on their phones ... patrons really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, as did we. That by itself makes this a cut above an american style spa where you go for your treatment and pretty much have to leave. This can be a 4 hour retreat from the cold winter world. Now for the 2 star review: The website and reality are 2 very different things. The only service they provide now is deep tissue massage and the platza treatment. No oxygen sauna, which I was keen to try. No hydrotherapy, no other services listed on the website. And no appointments in advance. You come, and if he's there, great. If not, oh well. And a huge disappointment is the pool. It is supposed to be heated but the (owner? manager?) said something was wrong with the heater and by the way he responded, you could tell it isn't in the plan to get fixed. So this amazing pool sits there, totally ready, and nobody goes into it because it's just too cold. Also their deep cold plunge pool in the sauna area is no longer working. Apparently the swimming pool is colder. I did enjoy the 2 big whirlpool hot tubs adjacent to the pool though. But I have a feeling they may not switch out the water much, just keep dousing it with chemicals. Ok, it may not be disease filled as a result, but we both smelled so badly of chlorine later that I regretted going in. There is a very interesting menu. We didn't partake, but it sure got my attention. A patron told me the dumplings (pyrogies) would disappoint a connoisseur. Which surprises me--in that neighborhood, there are 100 babushkas who would keep them flush in pyrogies for a small fee. There's a cottage industry they could easily be supporting. So, in summary, if you want to go for the 7 saunas and Andrij's skills and a lounging experience by the pool with an interesting menu, I say 4+ stars. If you are coming for the other amenities listed on the website--hot tub, pool, various other treatments or special experiences, I would have to give it a zero, or perhaps a 1 since the hot tub exists at least. But Russian baths are rare. From my internet search, there are only a few dozen at best worldwide, maybe 10 in the US. And if this spa was functioning as the website conveys, it would be hands above all the others in what they provide. The reason given was Covid--they had to close for a year, short staffed now, hard to keep those other amenities sanitary. Ok. I can get that with a working staff all those amenities could be returned. Maybe they haven't recovered financially enough to invest. Well, that's fair. And in that case, I sure hope they get their act together to restore it to its full potential. In the meantime, for $55 to experience 7 saunas, and for $60 more to get an excellent beating with oak leaves, then to lounge poolside in slippers and robe deeply and utterly relaxed, well, that's a fantastic opportunity. Just go with the correct expectations and you'll be thrilled. You will feel safe & at ease, not pampered but totally cared for, and be deeply relaxed after. read more

I came here with some friends just to check it out and I was pleasantly surprised! When you walk in you pay and trade a personal item for a locker key. It can be anything, we all gave our keys. The locker rooms were clean with free robes and towels to use. They even had flip flops to borrow but we all brought our own. There was a main pool/hot tub area where you could leave your things and order food using your locker number which was nice because we didn't need to have our wallets on us. Then there's a hallway of different sauna rooms that ranged from wet to dry and there was a cold dip pool and a cold room as well. We didn't order any massages since that has to be booked in advance but we had a blast rotating through all the rooms! The whole place was very clean with a shocking amount of families there. It was a nice feel and all the staff were so kind and helpful. In typical Eastern European fashion, everyone looked serious/grumpy until you talked and then they were some of the nicest people you've ever met! Family friendly hot tubs, cold pools, freezing plunge pools, steam rooms, dry saunas, wet saynas, arctic rooms...and GREAT Russian/Ukrainian/Georgian food??? Yes PLEASE!! I want to start off by saying this is not your traditional spa establishment. So don't expect fru-fru surroundings and fancy robes or to be waited on hand and foot. This is a multi fusion of old world, traditional and Americanized Russian, Turkish and steam room /sauna experiences. They do however offer clean robes, flip flops, towels and you can additionally purchase a massage, a platza (oak leaf healing) or an aqua capsule session. Also, there is a pool and two hot tubs to relax in. The experience otherwise is more of a quiet, laid back self focused experience unless you go with friends. There is juice bar here that serves phenomenal Russian and American cuisines and fresh pressed juices. From grapefruit, orange, or lemon juice to fresh grated carrot salads, Russian Borscht to baked whole hens with dill potatoes and homemade coleslaw. And it is BYOB which is a plus if you choose to do so. The entire experience is unique and quite addictive if you ask me. Work your way into the hot rooms ranging from a steam room (approx) 160 degrees to a Russisn Bath at 210 degrees on the norm. As long as you maintain good hydration and are aiming to benefit from a great sweat and reset then you will thoroughly enjoy your experience here. The Southampton spa is not a luxury spa. However, it is amazing and truly worth the experience (if you're willing to be open minded). It's about a 35 min drive from the city and there is ample parking. I've also heard rumors of an unmarked white van shuttle for groups. You walk up and maybe some shirtless old Russian men are standing outside. A Russian man greets you and collects your $40 (cash), he asks for collateral (keys, wallet, etc) and puts it in a tiny locked cubby and hands you a lock and a key. If you're looking lost and confused like us, maybe he gives you a tour, all while telling you to relax and enjoy your life repeatedly. He shows you to the main area, basically a large public pool with 2 hot tubs, and a bunch of plastic tables. There is also an upstairs lounge area that has booths. The locker room has robes and plastic sandals for you to use or you can bring your own. There's also an area with steam rooms, saunas, an ice room, a small very cold pool, cold showers and a Turkish Bath area with sinks that you can scrub yourself with. Some of the saunas are VERY HOT. There are also bunches of leaves in the back area that you can slap your friends with. NOTE: these are rented and you should not use someone's leaves because things could get awkward when they tell you they paid extra for those. Unlike Korean spas there's no naked part so bring a bathing suit! Not sure why but there are Home Depot buckets full of ice and maybe other stuff. Not sure where you get the silly hats some people are wearing or why you'd wear these. Not sure if they actually take appointments for massages over the phone ahead of time, our group had some difficulty here. Not sure if they even have people to give massages every day. Not sure if it's always cash only but it was when we went. Also, there's no ATM in the spa, so you have to drive somewhere to get cash. Things I am sure about: you should BYOB, you should bring water, and you should come hungry, because there's Russian food! We got the smoked fish platter (lox, mackarel and some other fish), borscht, a tomato feta salad, meat, potato, and cherry dumplings (these taste like canned cherries in dumplings which I wasn't mad about), and the pickles veggie platter. It came with thick rye bread. More things I'm sure about: We could have spent hours here and were kicking ourselves for having limited our time here, but it is not for everyone. Your fancy friend who refuses to swim in public pools- nope. Your mom who only goes to the finest spas- def not. Staff was friendly in a brusque manner. A variety of saunas & steam rooms. Definitely more male oriented. No water stations at a spa? That was odd. You had to pay for bottled water every time you needed a drink. Atmosphere was fine but very loud in the spa rooms. Decor was dated but functional. Food menu board looked very inviting however, what we ordered maybe isn't their strong menu items? Food came out quickly which was great. Soups were good. Seafood soup had no seafood. Borscht & mushroom were tasty. Don't get the pickled vegetable platter! $19 dollars for some pickles, shredded cabbage & carrots and a very funky pickled tomato. Fries & meat dumplings were good. Will definitely give it another try. Now that I know what to order and what to bring. Showers had only soap. No Shampoo or conditioner. If you go, you can byob. This place is wonderful! Clean, great selection of sauna and steam rooms (including a cold sauna and a salt sauna), ice cold showers and a cold plunge pool. The swimming pool is clean and there is a hot tub (which I did not get a chance to use). There is a food bar with excellent East European food, all reasonably priced. The towels and robes are tattered, but clean, and the rubber slippers are obviously well-bleached. This is a real Banya - not a frou-frou luxury spa. The owners are extremely friendly and helpful. It is family friendly - there were kids in the pool. Be forewarned: Cash only! But it is so affordable, a run to the ATM is not going to break the bank. Every time I go, I think "Why don't I do this more often!" It's especially satisfying in the winter time, heating up in the saunas and hot tubs. As others mention, it's different than traditional spas. Read the website first for more information and be sure to let them know it's your first time when you check in. I'm still new to the experience myself but basically you alternate between hot and cold treatments. You spend some time sweating in the sauna or Russian bath, then you take a quick ice-cold shower or dip in the cold plunge pool. I did the plunge pool once and haven't been able to bring myself to do it again! It's intense. I prefer the cold shower instead, so that if I can't take it I can take a step back. I'm getting better, and it only lasts about 5-10 seconds. Try that first before you try the pool in my opinion, but either way you should alternate! Don't just do the saunas and steam room. Then I like to relax in the hot tub a bit, do a few stretches and laps in the pool, then sit poolside for awhile. I typically do this cycle about 2-3 times while there. read more

As a Russian native, and an American - an Americanized Native, so to speak - you need to trust me. There have been plenty of good reviews and descriptions so far, so I'll stick to some advice for first timers: Guiding Principles: 1) Go with someone who knows what they're doing. Grab a Russian friend (or an experienced bath-goer) and ask them to spend a few hours at the banya - a curated experience can make all of the difference. 2) Manage your expectations, and suspend cowardice. This is not a frou-frou day spa, and anyone expecting a manicure, facial, etc. will be sorely disappointed. Take the advice outlined here below and you won't be disappointed 3) Relax. Don't worry about how stupid you look or don't look as an American, outsider, etc. I also wouldn't worry about body image - you'll see all kinds of shapes and sizes there. You're there to relax, enjoy yourself, and maybe learn about another culture, so don't worry about what people think. That said, be respectful as you would be anywhere. Tactical Advice: 1) There are essentially four treatment rooms, with varying degrees of heat and humidity. The Steam Room, Finnish Sauna, Turkish Sauna, and Russian Sauna. Think of your first pass through the rooms as a journey - start with the Steam Room and make your way to the Russian Room. Take 3-5 minutes in between. a) The Steam Room - Spend 5 minutes. Heat - 100-110 degrees F, Humidity 100%. Turn on the knob at the entrance to the room about two minutes in advance. Take a lukewarm shower afterwards. b) The Finnish Sauna - Spend 5-8 minutes. Heat - 155-175 degrees F, Humidity 5-10%. This is a standard sauna you will find anywhere. Recommend you bring an extra towel to sit or lay on. Take a cool shower afterwards. c) The "Turkish" Room - Spend 4-5 minutes. Heat - 170- 195 degrees F, Humidity 10-25%. This is my favorite room and the most common room for the veniki, or "platza treatment" (an essential part of the Russian bath experience, and not for the meek). Take a dunk in the cold pool 34-40 degrees F(adjacent to all 3 saunas), and a cold shower to follow (especially to cool your head down). Note - this is not truly a "Turkish" room - as their traditional Hammam is very different. This is more of a wetter, milder version of the Russian Room. d) The Russian Room - Spend 3-4 minutes. Heat - 190- 220 degrees F, Humidity 5-10 %. It's hot and dry - you'll know when to leave when your skin feels uncomfortable and dry. Take a dunk in the cold pool 34-40 degrees F (adjacent to all 3 saunas), and a cold shower to follow (especially to cool your head down). Remember that especially in the Turkish and Russian Rooms - use a cold wet towel (or a felt hat, if you have one) to keep your head temperature in check. Also - it is not a competition, so don't try to see "who can last longer". That makes you not just a neophyte, but just plain stupid. Steps A through D are 1 "round". You can do whatever you want after that, but that's a solid 45-50 minutes. I like to do 2-3 rounds, with food / massage breaks inbetween. Massage: The perfect time to get a massage is after you're done with your first round. Keep in mind that for an entrance fee of $35 (cheap) - this has been a pretty reasonable experience. The massage, at 1-2 hrs will cost you about a dollar per minute? You decide whether it's worth it. Here's my guidance - I go 4 times a month, and one of those times I'll get a massage. Don't forget to tip the staff. Overall - the massages are worth the money, but not the best I've ever had. Food: The food at Southampton is definitely authentically Russian, and I give it an A minus overall. Especially given the prices, which are very fair. Top dishes are the pickled platter (especially with vodka), Pork or beef Shashlik (kebobs), and Borsht. If you're in the mood for something lighter (and cheaper) - try Kompote, or tea, and a fruit platter The pelmeni are decent but not the best... if you've never had them I recommend trying them, but their variant of pilmeni is a "B" in my opinion. Don't forget to tip the staff. Alcohol: BYOB, BYOV. It's common to drink at the banya - usually after the treatment rooms (or your first round). Half the time I drink, half the time I don't. In any case - cap yourself at 1/2 the normal amount you normally drink and feel comfortable driving. The heat and cold combination will amplify intoxication, and over-drinking can be extremely dangerous (which is clearly stated in every single treatment room). This is where it helps to have a friend/ guide :) . Also - the treatment will cure hangovers like nothing else. I like to spend 3-4 hours there at a time, often go with friends -newbies and old pros, as well as just by myself to relax after a taxing week. Hope this was helpful! Nazdarovia! read more

For a truly unique adventure that combines relaxation and ethnic food, consider a drive north and east of the city to the Southampton Russian Bathhouse. During the week, the space is open from 11am until 11:30pm (closed Mondays). Admission is $35 which allows you access to the different sauna and steam rooms, tanning bed, Swiss showers, a cold plunge bath, a pool, and a jacuzzi. The balcony restaurant will serve you lunch or dinner without needing to pay the entrance fee, however we ate poolside and were able to leave our snacks at our table to nibble at in between sauna sessions. First, we warmed up with two hot soups; an overly simple borsch, and a cilantro flecked karcho ($6 each). I have had far better at other Russian restaurants close by, but they were in no way bad. The cabbage, carrots, and pickles on the pickle platter ($9) were quite good, but the tomatoes tasted very very off. A giant plate of fried potatoes and mushrooms is great to share. Just a touch greasy, it helps revive you after lots of sweating. My favorite bites were of the meat pelmeni ($7) , plated simply with a little pool of butter. Dip these Russian dumplings in sour cream. Southampton is BYO and vodka is what you should be bringing if you want to fit in. A pitcher of fruity kompot is a great mixer. Another option is a huge mug of the fermented drink Kvass, with about 1% ABV, its a safe thing to chug when going in and out of 200 degree rooms. A quick break down of the spa experience for nervous first timers: Pay $35 at the desk and leave an item as "deposit." Get a locker key, change into a bathing suit in your designated locker room. Grab a towel and robe by the pool. Mark your table, try not to laugh at the Russian spa "hats". Drink some vodka (but not too much), order some snacks. Move towards the saunas and do a round or two at each with cold showers in between. Come back for snacking and repeat. Chill out in the jacuzzi, one of the staff will turn the jets on for you. Pay for all your food at the desk on your way out. Looking for a state of the art, pristine spa experience? This isn't that. But I will definitely be going back. read more

I wanted to write a cool review of this wacky spot and accompanying experience - after all, where else can you go for a day that feels like you've been transported to the old country? Where you can, if you are brave and the locals like you (which they will, everyone was super friendly) be beaten on your body with a fibrous switch in a 175 degree room, and then have ice water thrown on you? Where you can sit around in a tattered cotton robe and drink beer (which you can bring yourself no matter what it says on the website and no matter how potentially unsafe it might be to drink beer in this setting) with old friends and new? Just ignore that that when the bubbles are turned off, the water appears a bit dirty, perhaps like old soup - like 'human-soup'. I also ignored that a Cheznyen man tried - and was partially successful - in planting a lip- lock on me near the ice-shower. I loved the oddness of this place. I loved that it felt like the 70's. I loved that people were passing around a hookah with non-tobacco smelling stuff in it in the smoking lounge. I wanted to come home and write this all up for you in hopes that you would make the drive out there to this inauspicious spot (it looks like a bowling from the parking lot) and experience this all for yourself. But I had to wait several days to write this up for you because almost immediately upon returning home, I was slammed with a nasty case of sinusitis a (plus flu for extra fun!) and have been bedridden for several days. Stepping into Southampton Spa is like stepping into Russia (or so I imagine, since I've never been to Russia) for the evening. I take this trip about once a month and it's like a mini vacation each time. You are greeted at the front desk by a man who only speaks a few words of English and directed to pay and put your wallet and keys into a plastic bag to be locked up for the duration. Then enter the main area of the spa where families are sitting around tables, which are all situated around the pool, eating and drinking in white robes. Tuesdays are discount days, you can get into the spa for $25 and they tend to get crowded. The best part is that you can bring your own food and your own alcohol - BYOB! Or if you like, you can buy food and drink from the restaurant. The only food I've had from there are the pierogis and they are good! I've checked out the food that other people are eating and it all appears to be delicious. Make sure you either bring a lot or buy a lot of water for your stay - once you enter the saunas you will need it. They have several saunas and steam rooms to choose from, along with an ice cold pool, a regular pool and a few hot tubs. You basically spend your time going from one to the other with breaks in between to sit around and eat and drink. Most of the people there are Russian, so don't be surprised if everyone initially tries to speak to you in Russian and then switches to English. The staff there vary between extremely helpful and completely not helpful. It's actually kind of entertaining. At the juice bar you get the typical Eastern Europe "service" with the stone cold straight face, barely acknowledging your request, and having to ask for things several times in order to get it. I've been told by friends who have been to Russia that it's the exact same service you get in Russia - authenticity! I've also been to the Turkish Russian baths in the LES in NYC and this is comparable, but really nicer. The only thing they are missing is the cold water pool located IN the Russian sauna that you use to pour buckets of freezing water over yourself as you sit inside of it, so you can endure the heat even longer. read more
