Southern Meats is an excellent place for getting frozen meats and veggies. They have a nice selection to choose from.

I patronized the Meat Depot to pick up a couple of items on my way home after two stressful days at…read morethe office. Upon completion of my item (3 (a 12 pak of ice cream, Golden Flake skins and one tomato) , the total came up to$14.14c. I cleared the aisle so the customer behind me could proceed with their purchases. I could not find the receipt. With respect to the lady behind me, I was waiting until the cashier TERNICE to finish with that customer. A male cashier came by as I was waiting TERNICE stated to the male cashier "I don't know why he standing there for" and before I could ask TERNICE if she had given me my receipt, TERNICE began shouting loud of how much my purchases were and how much change she had given me. The male cashier stated "he is looking for his receipt" and I followed behind him to let TERNICE know that I was looking for the receipt and that I had found the receipt. I work in the corporate field and politeness goes a long way. Other customers were looking at me. I have never been that embarrassed or yelled at like TERNICE had done.. The tomato itself was $3.88c. (wow!) That is why I wanted to review the recept. When my mother, sister and in-laws would visit, I would always take them to the Meat Depot, Huffman. I also referred my secretary to the Meat Depot. She and her sister travel from Pelham to shop there. I will make sure to let my family and her sister know of the treatment I received today. Remind you, my family visit from over 100 miles visiting me. Before they would travel back home, they would stop at the Meat Depot, Huffman. I will now take them to Fresh Value, Trussville. TERNICE, show respect to your customers. I respected you and your customer until you were done with her to make sure she was take care of properly. Once before, one of the cashiers did not trust me of the price of ice cream of which the cash register had rung up 50c more than the advertisedamount. . I had to prove that point to the cashier. I'm never really on this side of town, but we had to come here to get some steaks. I knew to go…read moreahead and get a shopping cart from the parking lot since I suspected that they didn't have any at the front of the building which I was right. Walking in, the store itself is a mess and it like they stop caring about the appearance a long time ago. You know it's bad when they have security cameras in the meat's department. They do have some good deals on steaks and ribs which is a much better prices than what you'll get at other stores.

It's Glasnost-to-Go: I found something NEW - a sure magnet for lovers of all things Baltic and…read morebeyond. It's the ST. NICHOLAS RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH--ANNUAL RUSSIAN/SLAVIC FOOD FESTIVAL! Having found it, I went...and was glad, although I took the trip alone. It was a pleasant drive with a delicious ending. It's held each year on the first Saturday - Sunday of November (times are 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Noon - 5 p.m., respectively) in the Parish Hall. [It began in 1981 as a bake sale and until recently it somehow, somewhere, some way eluded me.] Just got back, but it's still going strong tomorrow! (On Sundays, visitors can see a bit of Russian dancing on the grounds, located about 30 minutes northwest of Birmingham...I was sorry I missed the dancers, but my schedule was wild that week). Following what is estimated as a couple months' prep, the ladies of the "Sisterhood of St. Olga" - some of whom you may espy in native peasant dresses - roll out trays full of Ukrainian-Slovakian delights. These bonnes bouches de babushka are based on vintage recipes bequeathed by relatives and friends who immigrated to the area, drawn by potential employ at the local coal mines. Comestibles included beet-infused borscht, shschi (Russian soldiers' cabbage/meat soup - VERY GOOD), pirozhki (buns filled with various ingredients), blini (pancakes of a sort), pelmeni (filled dumplings), and kolbasa, which you may recognize under its Polish name, kielbasa. I chose the grand-slam "Imperial Platter," which boasted halupki (stuffed cabbage), kolbasa, kraut, pirozhki, halushki (dumplings & cabbage), cucumber salad, and pigachi for only $14. I LOVED IT... Other, smaller platters, including a vegetarian selection, are priced accordingly, and many of the pastries (Imperial squares, medivnyk, Russian teacakes, pascha, and bulochki) are individually priced. The smaller pastries run $2, while the larger breads are at $5. Very reasonable! The bakery area, itself, is reason enough to go. Plan to bring extra money just for this. I did, and I was broke...but I took an armload home, with my favorite a toss-up between the nut-filled, Slovakian rozky and the kolach, a rolled bread that, per my choice, was stuffed with almonds... YUMMM. Onsite you'll discover a store known as the Beriozka, where you can find imported tchotchkes (e.g. matryoshkas, or nesting dolls; iconography; hand-painted ornaments) and other more practical imports, such as books and woolen shawls, from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and the Republic of Moldova. I picked up one of the Russian cookbooks and will be utilizing it soonly... Call Father Benedict or Matushka Brigid Davis at the numbers above to get more info. Then it's time to dust off your samovar and head to St. Nick's!
