I want to first make clear that Dr. Trey Swinney is great. Personable, helpful, considerate and…read moreremembers his patients. This review isn't about him. This review is about the office management and more specifically the office/finance manager. I'd been to Dr. Swinney's 2nd office in November for emergency tooth pain. He started a root canal that I needed to come back another day to finish. I DO NOT like going to the dentist so I put off until I found myself in lain again in April. I work a couple blocks from Dr.'s other office so I called to book my f/u there. The person on the phone asked when if started the treatment and when I admitted November, her tone changed and judgment entered the picture. Regardless, we set an appointment for the following week. A few days later while eating dinner, I experienced high level pain! I looked online and found a message (text) function. I sent a message letting them know I was having high pain and that although I had an appt scheduled the next week for a root canal, I really needed to see about getting in sooner. No response. I messaged again the next morning following up on the previous message. No response. I called the office and mentioned I'd messaged a couple of times. The same woman I'd made the appointment with replied they have several people scheduled for a root canal and she didn't know who I was. My thought was...so you got my messages but couldn't just ask "who is this?" in order to help a patient? She was able to get me in sooner than my original appointment date. I filled out paperwork and was taken back to a room and prepped for the procedure. The same woman I'd talked to a couple of times now (can tell by her voice) came into the room, told me the total for the visit and that half would be due same day, then walked out. Upon completion of the procedure, I again met with this same woman to check out. (At this point t you probably see I don't remember her name but she's about 5'3", jet black hair with extensions, heavy makeup. I looked on their website for her name but she's not one of the three posted under Our Team.). She had a younger girl give me details and for each printed price per procedure, she'd mark out the expected insurance portion and lower it. I asked what the difference was also she turned to the older woman (point of this post), she told her to tell me that my insurance just isn't good about paying and doesn't pay for a lot of stuff. As I asked more questions, the younger girl would turn and ask the older woman so finally the older woman came over to me. She told me I had to pay $500 before I could leave. When I told her I couldn't do that, she said "I came in your room and told you this. That was me discussing it with with you ahead of time". She continues to stand over me while I'm sitting at the counter, demanding payment. She said if I couldn't pay with a debit I needed to apply for Care Credit on the spot so she can get some money. I let her know I'd make a payment then subsequent payments until paid off, before scheduling the appointment for my crown. She continued to demand payment, getting more visibly angry with me. She then demanded I sign forms giving my debit card info and agreeing to large automatic draft payments. I refused and told her I'd already signed papers regarding financial responsibility for my account so I'd make payments as I stated before. At this point I was done with her attempts to bully me and told her I will no longer be a patient there if that's what she'd prefer but that I wasn't going to give her my debit information or permission to charge it. I made my payment and left. I later called my insurance to ask what the coverages were and what the difference was between what was printed and what I was told. My insurance said "that office is out of network, did they not tell you that when you asked?" Of course they didn't!! At this point I'd already decided not to go back, which is unfortunate because the Dr. himself is GREAT!!! Toward the end of April I needed to get an itemized bill for my services to turn in for a claim. I filled out their contact us form on their website TWO different times/days. I have yet to hear a peep from the office. I have to believe Dr. Swinney has no idea how this woman is representing he and his practice. She's outright rude, demanding, attempts judgement, has the ability to make someone never want to visit his office again, gives opinions rather than facts and gives inaccurate/incomplete insurance information. The other staff I encountered were very kind and considerate but it only takes one bad seed to ruin the experience with the rest. If you'd like to experience a GREAT dentist, I highly recommend Dr. Trey Swinney but I'd 199% suggest you go to his office behind Lowe's and NOT the office on 5th Street!! His office manager there is next level terrible!!!

Please be aware that, if you have an HMO, you may be charged out-of-pocket for your teeth cleaning,…read moreeven if your HMO says you're not supposed to be charged extra. You may also be charged a "sterilization fee." I suggest that you ask them about this before you make an appointment, so that you will know ahead of time and you won't be surprised. My experience is that this dental practice is hard to reach on the phone. I receive a busy signal most of the time. When I got through and told them about the busy signal, the receptionist told me that they only have two phone lines and that they're very busy, and that that's why I couldn't get through. But I don't understand why they don't route calls to voicemail when they are on another call. I think that every other business I interact with has a voicemail service instead of a busy signal. I had Deltacare HMO when I went to Dr. Ruby for a teeth cleaning back in February 2022. Dr. Ruby is one of the contracted HMO providers, and my plan benefits state that "prophylaxis" teeth cleanings are supposed to be at no charge to me. But I was charged out-of-pocket $6.00 more for the teeth cleaning, as well as a $7.00 "sterilization fee." I paid $13.00 out-of-pocket for a visit that I thought was supposed to be at no cost to me. I asked the receptionist about these charges, and she said that they always bill HMO patients extra out-of-pocket, because she said that they cannot be expected to work for the small amount of money that the HMO reimburses them. I called my insurance company, and they told me that the sterilization fee is allowed but that the extra charge for the teeth cleaning is NOT allowed. In my experience, other dentists do NOT charge a "sterilization fee" surcharge or an out-of-pocket teeth cleaning surcharge to Deltacare HMO subscribers.
