I had to stay in town extra days and the man from Harvard I was with -- his name is Papers, he's my husband -- he had to go. So I was like, well there goes my Harvard money. Where'm I gonna stay? There is absolutely nothing wrong with Southern Oaks Inn. There is absolutely nothing right about it either. It is fine. It is near a Walgreens and a CVS and a very good Mexican food restaurant. It is inhabitable. It is not on the beach. If you want to impress someone, then you need to check out The Inn at Camachee Harbor which is right near the bridge to Vilano Island. For everyone who's been to 30A, Vilano Island is like Rosemary Beach, Alys Beach, etc. You wanna be there. This hot tip I'm giving you, about The Inn at Camachee Harbor, is not gonna be on Expedia. Seek it out. You wish you were 21. And that is the unit you are looking for. It has a private balcony. read more

When you travel with a pooch, things can get difficult sometimes. Stephen found this hotel for our trip to St Augustine, and we loved it. They say they are pet friendly, but this is a large understatement. My boy was so welcomed! They have a dog park, and also provide an extensive list of dog friendly locations nearby. Restaurants, and attractions alike are set up on a list for you in the room, along with lots of other guides such as where the closest vet office is and where a pet store is in cause you forgot anything. I will say that there is a rule that if left alone, the doggies need to be in a crate in the room. Aside from the place being amazing to my Waylon, it was also a really nice place to stay! The room was really comfy, the beds were great and the location to everything couldn't have been better! read more

It's been about 4 years since we stayed here so maybe things have changed but I feel I should share my experiences anyways. We were so excited to stay here as this is the hotel my grandmother used to bring my mother and my aunt to when they were kids (under a different name and ownership back then). We were extremely disappointed in our stay to say the least. The pool hours are extremely strict for being a vacation spot, the smoking rules while I know exists for a reason are also quite ridiculous. There was an employee who quite literally stalked everyone in our party to ensure we weren't smoking in undesignated areas. It was a bit overkill to say the least and quote unsettling to have someone creeping around behind you constantly. The rooms are rather small compared to other rooms in the area. The breakfast was nice but not very inviting staff in the lobby watching over you once again while you are serving your breakfast. The biggest issue we had was when we went to check out we noticed my mother's car had been quite literally ran over by what we must assume was a large and lifted truck backing up. It literally backed up over her hood and crushed it in. The damage was extensive. While we are trying to call the insurance company and figure it all out the hotel staff was rude enough to rush us out of the rooms so they could clean them. We ended up sweating in the Florida heat in the middle of July in the parking lot for hours trying to make the insurance claim etc while the hotel staff continued to tell us there was nothing they could do, they claimed to not have any cameras on property, and claimed they didn't know if a guest with a large truck. After hours of dealing with this they called the manager who came to the hotel from we assume his home and he presented us with a tiny scratch piece of paper with a name and phone number written on it. It was the contract information for the gentleman who had ran over our car. When he did it he was very concerned and sorry apparently and asked the hotel staff to assist him with locating us, they were equally as unhelpful to him as they were to us. All this to say, yes things happen, yes it was out of their control, but hindering the gentleman and us from having contact or being able to resolve the issue was COMPLETELY their fault. They exasperated the entire process with their actions. Needless to say we have been weary of staying at this property again ever since which makes us super sad given the nostalgia of it for our family. read more

The best ever the room was very clean, the staff so friendly. Housekeepers was very good keeping the room clean. The southern breakfast was wonderful first day was grits, eggs, sausage potatoes and pancakes was very hot and fresh. Not forget hot tea or coffee fresh orange juice bagels assorted breads. Our second day they served French Toast sausage grits potato eggs. I went swimming it was very clean pool they gave pool towels too, we book a room for pets they gave a huge pet bed and 2 bowls that were collapsible however we did not bring our pet but was impressed they thought of the pet as well. This privately-owned Inn really goes all out to make your stay comfortable. It has a classic Inn/ motel design, exterior halls and entrances. Rooms have 3+ comfortable beds, ( that's out of 5), provide fairly decent in room amenities, ie, hairdryer, coffeemaker, iron & board, small desk and side chair. Quiet, close enough to walk to downtown, but they do provide a shuttle service for $10, (which is added to your room fee, not optional). Features- 5 out of 5 rating for pet friendly!! Rooms have large comfy dog bed and collapsible bowls. Dog park has covered gazebo and a fun obstacle course. 4 out of 5 rating for "free" breakfast. It really is a continental breakfast plus plus. Our server, she was great, cheerful and a real asset to the experience. Market has liquor license and sells single serve alcohol and specialty mixed drinks, plus normal water, soda, juices and snacks. Staff- suitable to the Inn's atmosphere, friendly, welcoming, but serious about being in the hospitality business. I really liked the text messaging system to communicate with front desk. Laundry is present, just adequate(2/5). Pool is fenced but not really private. This hotel experience was amazing. My boyfriend and I were only here for a night but we are definitely coming back! The hotel provided a shuttle from 10am-10pm taking you back and forth to downtown. We had a complimentary breakfast buffet from 7am-10am (which they had really yummy food and a little book to leave a review on how it tasted). The front desk was really kind, there 24/7 and very informative. For those that like to drink (which I do) they have a little mini bar in the lobby open till 2am ! The bourbon mixer with lemonade and cranberry juice was the best! I am so amazed by how clean, respectful and welcoming this place was. Oh ! My fiancé booked this hotel for our weekend trip to St. Augustine & while it isn't a "5 Star Luxury Hotel", it was absolutely perfect for what we were looking for! We ended up staying 3 nights (booked 2 originally & easily added the 3rd!) with our pupper. One of the first things I noticed in our room was the collapsible dog bowls and dog bed they give you for your stay, which our dog loved. The dog run area is also very nicely sized with a cute tree house for people to sit. The shuttle service was life saving! While this hotel isn't in the middle of the night life scene, this made it a convenient, safe, & cheap way to make sure we got there and back safely. The breakfast was actually really tasty, and I loved the staggered timing so it wasn't crowded. We stayed here in 2018 and had such a great experience that when we came back to St. Augustine we decided to book another room here but this stay was extremely disappointing. We had to check out early after our first night because we were so unhappy - the bed was extremely hard and uncomfortable, and the floor was so filthy the bottoms of our feet and socks were black after just a few moments. When we told the lady at the front how dirty the floors are she insisted that they're that way "because of the sanitizer they use for Covid." We are supper disappointed because we had such a great experience here in 2018 and were excited to revisit, especially after the remodel but the cleanliness and the quality of both the rooms and the staff has drastically declined since we visited a few years ago. read more

This is a decent pet-friendly accommodation but is not thoroughly clean as was evidenced when I wiped a water spill from the floor. There was old dog urine and the floor was dirty. I even went to Petsmart and bought an enzymatic cleaner. The front desk staff is not friendly at all. Very important are the hidden fees and deceptive advertising. As mentioned by another reviewer, you are slapped with a "Hotel Services Fee" that has now gone up to $25 a day (from $20 in December 2021 or maybe that's another penalty for booking through a 3rd party). Also, the pet fee is $25, instead of $20, if you don't book directly through them, which is not always an easy task online. The hotel service fee is not disclosed when you check-in & the only way I got an itemized bill is when I requested it online after returning home because as stated by others, you are requested to not check out in the lobby but just leave keys in the room. My online chat customer service reps were just as unhelpful and unfriendly as the people at the front desk, in addition to being rude. I asked what the hotel fee was for & was told for amenities (wifi, pool, breakfast, etc) that they advertise as free or lead you to believe is included in your room price. To my knowledge, there is no way to opt-out of these "amenities" and it is not stated when you check-in. The other staff is very friendly but the people in clerical positions are just miserable. Had a restless night of sleep. Not sure if it was the double espresso, the thundering herd of Buffalo passing above me, the faint yet unmistakable odor of Sasquatch in the room, or the equally restless roach I found in the morning. On a positive note, this location has ample parking along with available trailer spots. It is fairly close to downtown. If you're a hoofer you can go by foot about a mile-ish and save the trolleys for the elderly and carbohydrate friendly. The dog park on grounds looks excellent. This hotel is a good example of "you get what you pay for." Do not expect to pay $80 for a night and get modern looking and luxury hotel. This place does the job if you are in town 1-2 nights and won't be at the hotel much. Check in was very simple and staff is friendly and willing to answer all questions. Regular check in is 4Pm, which I think is very late, but they do sometimes allow for 2pm check in. They have continental breakfast which is an added bonus. Do not stay here if you want to be walking distance to downtown, you will have to drive/uber to all of the bars or restaurants, but it is a very quick drive;7 minutes. Overall we were very happy with our stay, this is your standard motel, but better b/c clean and quiet in nice area. (Also if you don't like pets make sure when you book to ask for the non pets building-- they do have a whole building with no animals.) Additionally, there is an added $10 per night "hotel fee" that is never mentioned when you book, but they tell you when you check in. read more

I had driven from NY and only got 3 hours sleep the night before and was looking forward to peace and quiet. When I checked in, no one told me about the major construction going on every night in front of the hotel. When I asked what in God's name was the noise they told me. She said "yeah we have to listen to it all night it's awful!" Yes but the difference is you're not paying to listen to it. This hotel is very pricey and they change a separate service charge which I didn't like but wanted to stay someplace clean. All the local hotels have constant complaints of lack of cleanliness so I sucked it up and paid it. I really think that they should have offered me a comp night later date or something. The Inn is very lit up at night to help with security and returning after dark. Property and rooms are well kept. Beds were average. Never used the pool so I can't comment on that. A quirk to the room that may bother some: Towels and sink separate from the shower & toilet. Considering the value It was easy to overlook. Coffee maker in room missing the coffee basket. We stayed here because they were the host hotel for a race. The rates were reasonable, the rooms were clean, the outside was cute. We were super impressed with the service, though. The lobby was always up and running and the staff was super accommodating. They are uber pet-friendly and my son is allergic, so I was worried we would have issues with the room. We asked for a non-pet room (which we have done in many other pet friendly hotels), and I was worried they would do what most places do: assure me it's a pet-free room and then my son can't sleep for 2 nights. But nope! They actually had a whole block of rooms reserved in which no pets are ever allowed, and they made sure to save me one of these rooms upon check in. I also requested a ground floor since I needed to load and unload a large paddle board, and they granted that request as well. The grounds are well maintained. They serve a decent free breakfast, and they even have a little "bar" in lobby where you can buy booze, water, etc. Close enough to old town and other tourist areas that it's an easy drive. read more

Nice hotel just 2 miles from old town St. Augustine! The hotel has been completely renovated during the past year - exterior painted white and light blue, tons of flowers planted everywhere (lots of shrubbery, flowers on trellises, thick grass), rooms have laminate flooring and granite bathroom counters. The place looks really nice! Rooms also have fridges, microwaves, flat screen TVs that are adjustable. Rates were typical of St. Augustine, especially for Saturday/Sunday nights. The hot breakfast is the best we've had at a hotel. French toast, blueberry pancakes, home fries, eggs, cheesy grits, sausage plus all the standard breads/pastries. Everything is cooked fresh and served from a buffet line by very friendly people. There is ample seating room too. For dog lovers, there is a section of the hotel that is pet friendly and they have an enclosed dog park on the property. I think if they replace the hard beds, this place could gain a star on all the travel sites and yelp. Beds were way too hard for a good night's sleep. Pet friendly, huge surrounds (pet area is nice and large, there's a dog run too, and a completely separate gazebo/hang area across the parking lot from that). All sanitary precautions were very much appreciated, as were the dining suggestions. There's a free trolley to downtown also. Rooms are on the small side but that's to be expected given the age of the hotel. Wifi worked great, bed was comfortable. My one item of note would be that breakfast was pretty average, and there was no oatmeal - those of us with family members allergic to eggs and on diets would have loved that. The rooms were absolutely beautiful. Hardwood floors throughout the room and tile in the bathroom, it wasn't what I was expecting at all . When you drive up it look like a generic Days Inn or Holiday Inn, but the similarity ends there, because inside the rooms is where this hotel shines. One top of the great rooms they have a complimentary Country Style Breakfast, and it was amazing. Eggs, french toast, biscuits and gravy, bacon, and sausage. I was expecting your normal continental breakfast you usually get from hotels, which was also available. You will never need to look for breakfast when you stay here. The only down sides, was that the shower head was low flow. Also on the bed there wasn't any quilt or comforter. I like to keep my hotel rooms a bit colder, which is amazing after a long, hot Florida day of sightseeing. But in the middle of the night I had to wake up and turn the temperature up. I know it's kind of my fault but the room was in need of something more than two sheets on the bed. Also you can get pick up by a shuttle for the Old Town Trolly, which I suggest you take. My boyfriend, coworker, and myself booked a super last minute (literally night before) trip to St. Augustine for a night of ghost tours and good food/views. We really weren't expecting much before arriving to the hotel because the price was wonderful and we weren't being picky considering this was a spontaneous trip. However, this inn has lovely guest service, rooms were clean and looked cuter than i thought, the front of the inn looks gorgeous compared to the others surrounding it, and plus the FREE breakfast was freshly cooked and there was plenty to choose from. Absolutely hands down the most bang for your buck in Saint Augustine! Very friendly staff. Clean rooms. Comfortable beds with four fluffy pillows. Homemade cookies, coffee and tea when you check in! They explain everything to you when checking in (thanks Julie), but then go one step further and hand you a Welcome Letter with all that same info! Wi-Fi was super fast. Having a fridge and microwave (and coffee/tea) in room was another nice touch. The breakfast was amazing. Fresh eggs with ham, sausage, potatoes, cheese grits, blueberry pancakes! Cereal with iced milk, bagels (and even peanut butter), toast (even raisin toast)and fresh fruit. Hot coffee with all sorts of fancy creamers and even hot chocolate! We've stayed here several times and we don't even have pets! While it really caters to being pet-friendly, we have allergies and they have a special building that doesn't allow pets! I had the opportunity to stay at the Southern oaks inn in the beautiful St. Augustine Florida recently. This hotel exceeded my expectations. From the outside it doesn't look like much but oh my the service is top notch. On entering we were greeted by the sweetest ladies who made check in easy and got us directed to our rooms so we could start exploring. Our rooms was wonderful very spacious and clean. Plus it came with two queen beds which was awesome. The room was fully stocked with all the amenities one could need. From towels, to bathroom supplies to my much needed coffee. Plus the bathroom was clean with no mold growing anywhere. that truly impressed me. It's all about the little things. The outside area was also clean with plenty of parking space. the pool was nice it even came handicap accessible with chair lift something most hotels don't think about. also because this hotel is pet friendly they had a dork park for walking your dog. In the morning you are offered a wonderful breakfast. Kimberly our cook and server rocked. The breakfast is better then I have had anywhere it was a full course breakfast of eggs, meat, potatoes, grits, bread, bagels, cereal, coffee, juice and lots more. I have to say this was one of the best places we have stayed at in St. Augustine. Everything was of high quality and the staff was very helpful and friendly. If you ever stay in St. Augustine look them up and oh ask for Caroline at front desk she can tell you where to eat and what to visit she really knows the area. Lights between beds did not work until we pushed one of the beds back to found the plug was totally bent and only half on the socket. Breakfast was southern fare. Second morning we stand in line for 15 minutes for a breakfast "manned" buffet and were then told we needed to have the jackets to our room keys with us. DIDN'T need this the previous day, WASN'T advised of this at checkin!! Felt like we were in a Seinfeld episode as we did not observe everyone having to show this! It's very very very basic. No frills of any kind. Rooms are extremely tiny like a motel six mushroom smeller. Biggest issue ? The sheets are polyester and it feels like sleeping in a plastic bag all night. That's really low end and junky. Breakfast was ok nothing at all healthful on it but they work hard to keep it moving. Coffee is horrific. No doubt they re use the house coffee twice (at least) - it's like water. People were nice. We missed a tour because the shuttle is not what it's advertised as. It's shared with lots of places so the waits can be extreme - if you use it after ten pm there is a charge which they don't tell you about. Lyft is much cheaper. Overall I wouldn't come back. read more

A sweet little motel with a wonderful staff. We had a little vacation for my boys and mother. The room was very clean and the cleaning staff was kind and generous with their time. The breakfast was DELICIOUS and made fresh daily. No boil in a bag eggs here. I saw them cracking the eggs for the yummy eggs myself. Their shuttle service runs on time and several times a day. The pool was clean and well maintained. The tables probably need to be replaced soon, but they served their purpose. The pool had a lift for those unable to enter the pool via the stairs.
